Good thing the Onion has a reputation as a liberal outfit. Otherwise people wouldn’t know whether to be offended at this or not.

Believe it: they went there.

you seriously need to classify crap like this as “onion specific”

Outtakes/Blooper Reel, please! You know all those actors and extras had to be seriously cracked up cracking up!

I’m constantly amazed at how many people they get to play these things completely straight. They probably do have a great blooper reel by now.

Come on sweetie, you can tell me what really happened.

I take it this is your first time on an Onion thread?

Bad Candy on September 17, 2007 at 11:16 PM

This stuff isn’t funny. It’s just poor taste.

Is the Onion trying to capitalize on the arrest of O.J.? All the clip did for me was invoke the memory of Nicole Brown Simpson. If that is what it was calculated to do, then I think it is reprehensible.

I doubt they even thought of that, they probably just did it because its irreverent. Its the Onion, they’ve been doing tasteless pieces for ages.

Bad Candy on September 17, 2007 at 11:29 PM

Well, I liked it anyway.

Time for a good ole fashioned sexist joke!

What do you tell a woman with 2 black eyes?

Nothin, you already told her twice!

lorien1973 on September 17, 2007 at 11:50 PM

“If only we weren’t so clumsy …”

I laughed til I peed.

But since I’m still giggling at Mr. HepMeHepmeBzzzzt in the other thread, it didn’t take much to set me off. Apparently I’m in a sadistic mood.

Funny. But I do wonder how funny liberals would find it if it came from a different source. They’d probably have to organize a march or something.

At which they could be tased on video for my amusement.

It’s like the circle of life thing.

Q. What’s the first thing a woman does after checking out of the domestic violence center?

A. The dishes, if she knows what’s good for her.

Yeah, but what does your dog think?

BadgerHawk on September 18, 2007 at 8:34 AM

If you are of the opinion that battered women are willing participants in the abuse, then it can be viewed as funny I guess. And I mean women who cover for their men, make excuses, and above all else, STAY with the abuser no matter what. It would be an unthinkable parody if it were dealing with child abuse in a similar manner, because children are actually helpless, whereas women in reality are not, even though they may be convinced otherwise.
On the other hand, if you think that battered women are true victims who are emotionally trapped, intimidated and helpless to change their situation, or are yourself a battered woman, it’s not funny – but maybe thought-provoking.
What I don’t get are battered husbands. Is that an Urban Legend, or what?

Dork B. on September 18, 2007 at 8:40 AM

All husbands are abused…
We just handle it better.
Must be the thicker skin.
Higher pain threshold etc… :P

ah …. *sigh* …. whew!

This isn’t funny, it’s serious. But as I watched the video, I was reminded of non-Muslims in a Muslim society. All of these battered women, who were denying that there was a problem, were like dhimmis in a Muslim land — beaten and intimidated into submission, to the point of denying that there is even a problem, but all the time having an undercurrent of fear, because they know that the problem is very real, but that they aren’t allowed to talk about it.

jimbo2 on September 18, 2007 at 10:50 AM

BadgerHawk on September 18, 2007 at 8:34 AM

My collie says:

The difference between you (homo sapiens) and us (canis familiaris) it that WE wouldn’t even treat a BITCH that way.

You gotta’ give the stupid dog credit — when he’s right, he’s right.

I hope you don’t think I was laughing at this issue. I was just snarking on Rugged’s comments. I can’t watch the video at work, but I completely agree that abuse — having witnessed plenty of it — in any form is a very serious issue. That said, this is The Onion. I don’t think it was intended to spark serious debate. Nor do I think that any of the laughing / joking in this thread is intended to minimize the seriousness of any truly abusive situation.

Because I’m sure the Onion thought up the idea, scripted it, casted for it, designed for it, and produced it within the past few days because of OJ Simpson.

Trying hard not say the word “idiot”.

VinceP1974 on September 18, 2007 at 12:11 PM

Those above who are saying this isn’t funny but poor taste are half correct. It is not funny, its social satire and pretty good satire at that.

Hey, most of the time the Onion’s political bias is clear but they are better about seeing that their humor is pointed both directions than anyone else I can think of.
