Video: Cops tase moonbat at Kerry speech just to watch him squirm

Well, not exactly. Via Jay Stephenson, the video shows the cops moving in after just one question although the article Dan Riehl found suggests the guy had been at it for a bit longer than that. I wonder what, if anything, he said or did to alarm them before the clip picks up; they’re awfully quick to grab at him after he finishes speaking and for no discernible reason. From there it plays out like the UCLA incident last year — screaming, struggling, and finally pain-compliance via the taser, which typically is supposed to be used to immobilize a suspect who’s threatening the officer, not to quiet down someone who’s in custody.
As usual with these things, everyone involved comes off badly.
Update: HuffPo’s headline captures the Arianna interpretation of the incident perfectly.

I noticed the audience applauded when the police first grabbed him, so whatever he did or said, he hadn’t made any friends.

The “Help! Help!” sounded really familiar, didn’t it? Yes, I’m a bad person, but I thought he was going to shout, “Now you see the violence inherent in the system!”
Agreed: everybody looks bad in this kind of thing. My heart doesn’t bleed for the kid, though; he clearly wanted to disrupt the event, and I have the feeling he’s pleased with how things went down. Look for him on cable news soon!

Not only that, but looked on with sort of quizzical, half-amused curiosity, whilst john kerry, in a manner reminiscent of sally field, attempted to get his speech back on track.
I’m sure there were very clear rules spelling out the limits of behaviour in this forum. This was an opportunistic stunt. This individual is just a scott beauchamp wannabe who contrived to get a microphone. Get ready, because he’ll probably be on the talk show circuit, noticably puffy from flutes of champagne and tasty celebrity snacks.
RushBaby on September 17, 2007 at 10:14 PM
The cops should have stuck a sock in his mouth first. Other than that their actions looked fine to me. What an obnoxious brat. Isn’t asking the crowd to help him resist arrest an attempt to incite a riot?

I’m taking the Moonbat’s side. What DID he do, other than behave just like a Moonbat?
It must have been the Skull & Bones question that set the police off. It’s kinda like asking about Area 51 and you cannot go there.
It will be interesting to hear Kerry’s remarks on this.
Buy Danish on September 17, 2007 at 10:23 PM
I’m not really against the tasering of annoying moonbats, but I don’t get what this kid that would deserve it.
The best part was the lack of action by Kerry during the whole incident.
BadgerHawk on September 17, 2007 at 10:26 PM
Honestly, that one big cop alone could have slung him over his shoulder and hauled him outside. One skinny, loud-mouthed pinhead and seven (at least) campus cops ~ ridiculous. They need to take lessons from the capital Police/Code Pink run-in ~ scoop up and speed the Chatty Kathys out the door.
tree hugging sister on September 17, 2007 at 10:26 PM
Was a taser necessary? I mean, UCLA’s Campus Police have a reputation for being trigger happy with those tasers.
mram on September 17, 2007 at 10:26 PM
a free tip:
when police or security officers take you by the arm to escort you off private property: go quietly, be polite, and obey the instructions given to you. Chances are, you will be able to politely talk your way out of a misdemeanor as long as you agree to leave.
do NOT shove officers, do NOT flail your arms, and for heaven’s sake; do NOT yell ‘OMG! I’m being arrested! OMG! WTF? OMFG! Help!’ or you will be tasered.
stevezilla on September 17, 2007 at 10:28 PM
He will probably go off on some nonsense about freedom of speech, when in fact he was denying others their freedom of speech by taking up the mic. Public forum have to have rules for limiting each persons time in order for them to work. As soon as someone in authority tells him his time is up, he need to take his freedom of speech outside where he won’t disturb other’s freedom assembly.
Yeah, that seems like a lot of force for talking too much, but the force was really for ignoring a lawful order.

There was no reason to use a taser on that man. He wasn’t threatening the cops. He had no weapon. This is a clear case of police incompetence. And it’s more and more common as police departments all over the country decide that rather than teach their people how to deal with an obnoxious college student, they should just let them deliver however many volts that taser holds.
I’m not making excuses for his behavior. He was stupid to be resisting arrest. But he also had a point: What WERE they arresting him for? Hogging the mic?
Meryl Yourish on September 17, 2007 at 10:30 PM
It looks like someone was asking him to leave and when he drones on I think they asked the police to step in.
Be nice if it was someone in Kerry’s staff

William Amos on September 17, 2007 at 10:39 PM
That video helped clarify things. Watch the 2 cops who have obviously been called over. I doubt they just happened to be standing there. There is a guy standing behind the cops who appears to be looking for direction as to what to do. he steps back out of the frame right before the cops moved in. I think he gave the order to remove Mr Microphone. When the cops tried to escort him out he refused their directions and the situation degraded rapidly from there.
His whiny “help. help” was actually funny and sad at the same time. He wanted to control the situation. When he couldn’t control the mic anymore he tried to control the event. The audience applauds when the cops start to remove him, and he starts trying to incite the crowd like the cops were the cause of the problem.
He pretty much forced the cops hand on this. Wasn’t it his intention to disrupt the event all along? Looks like he succeeded.
Guardian on September 17, 2007 at 10:39 PM
I think it started as an escort out the door, but if you notice that when he first broke away, he headed straight for the stage where a sitting senator was standing. That’s when they slammed and started really dragging him out. Bad move.
And why we are on the subject, why does everyone get so squeamish when someone is tased for resisting arrest? Isn’t that what it’s for?
Perhaps we revert back to the stereotypical Irish cop? It would be much more fun to say “Don’t hit me with that shillelagh bro!”
mojowire on September 17, 2007 at 10:43 PM
Surely you jest. I have to say I am very disappointed with many of my fellow conservatives.
Kerry did say something like, “That’s okay, let him speak” but he is not a very good “commander in chief” and the police ignored him. I’d like to have a transcript of his comments.
He should have really gotten assertive once they began to get rough with the kid but at that point it appears that he just sort of stood by lamely and let it happen.
Which is probably a good metaphor for what a Kerry Presidency would have looked like.

Yeah the kid was obnoxious (although he was very polite at the beginning) but what’s the violation of law here? Talking too much?

I saw a flash which indicates that he MIGHT have been tased. If I were the guy with the taser, he’d have been subdued, cuffed and stuffed the moment he resisted the officers the FIRST of those twenty-some-odd times he did it. They seem to be local police and not campus security or event rent-a-cops. It’s gotten to the point where the Libs are willing to go to any level of drama just to give the French and other anti-American news programs sound bites they can misinterpret, video footage they can misrepresent and misinformation they can disseminate.

Hahahaha I love those vids! Dont tase me bro. Help! bzzt. Come on that’s great.
He got exactly what he wanted, a lot of attention and a video of his antics which will get him a lot of points with his crowd.
As for what the cops did the only question I have is do they have the right to require people to leave? Anyone familiar with the laws there? If they do then I have no problem with what they did, they tried to calmly escort him out. He resisted. If they dont have the right to remove him then they screwed up and need to be disciplined and trained how to handle the situation next time.

Too bad Al Franken wasn’t around – he would have just tackled the nutjob.
I don’t have a lot of sympathy for the man, who was so steeped in conspiracy-theory Kool Aid that he kept screaming “the government is going to kill me!” after he left the auditorium (see extended clip).
His endless repetitions suggest a mental imbalance of some sort beyond simple moonbattery.

If I had taken time away from family or other responsbilities to attend an event to hear a candidate speak, I would consider it a very serious violation of my rights to have that guy deny me my right to ask question of the candidate. His time was up and he knew it. There comes a time when you have to obey the rules, and if you don’t then the consequences escalate: http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/22c-12.htm That’s a necessary part of living in a democracy.
As for the tasor, it was clear the he was escalating his use of force when he got to the door. When he was on the ground, we don’t know what we did as far as kicking, scratching, or punching, but one can assume that he was doing a lot of acting.

Christoph on September 17, 2007 at 11:11 PM
Once the force started being applied, the young man wouldn’t comply and some physical force, hands on or a taser was required.
While a taser can cause injury/pain, so can hands on and that is by no means safer.
I have no idea why the police used force in the first place, however. No reason that I could see in that video.

More entertaining than last night’s Emmy Awards. Hmmm…maybe they should have taken a taser to Ryan Seacrest. It sure would have made the show more interesting. Sorry. Couldn’t resist. Am I just a bad man if I admit to cackling wildly through that whole thing?
And I don’t even know who was funniest. Mr. “Hep me, hep me, lawdie lawdie hep me!” was good … the zoned out audience was good too … the Konfused Keystone Koppers were awesome … but the winner has to be John Frickin’ “Almost Your Commander” Kerry, droning in the background as their zapping the kid. He was actually still boring everyone to tears even while a live action episode of South Park was being played out right in the audience.
It was like listening to the classroom seen in Ferris Beuller while watching a good episode of Cops. The juxtaposition was awesome.
Has anybody remixed the video yet? This one’s gonna be a classic.

There was a perfectly good reason to smoke the bastard: he tried to swing his way out of police custody. If I was a cop I’d take it as assault, whip out my baton and bust his knee caps. I’m not risking my life or anyone else’s life for some underwear skid mark of a liberal.
Darth Executor on September 17, 2007 at 11:40 PM
Are those campus cops or something? Why couldn’t they restrain him better? He kept getting away, from the get go. Not that, from what I can tell, they should have been arresting him or restraining him in the first place, but why couldn’t they even do it once they committed? Especially in the beginning when he wasn’t really fighting back that hard, why not lock his arms up in any number of ways, rather than amateurishly grabbing at him? WTF?
Anyway, all this will amount to is “proof” for Truthers that they’re being silenced. Let it stand as a warning to Gregor.

Christoph on September 18, 2007 at 12:02 AM
He was at a private event. He was asked to leave. He didn’t. At that point he was guilty of trespassing. When the police tried to remove him he resisted. They subdued him. This is pretty straight forward.
Besides he violated the number one rule to avoided being tasered. When the person with the taser tells you to do something, you do it. He could have easily avoided the pain by leaving quitely.
Buford on September 18, 2007 at 12:05 AM
You’ll see more and more of a split between the Democrats and the moonbats as we get closer to the election. They know that the hard far left isn’t going to win the election so let the purge begin.
As for the tasering, although I’m not sure about the UCLA cops but most agencies allow the taser to be used against non compliant and resisting subjects. If their use of force policy allows that use the cops operated within their policy and procedure, if not then they weren’t. I promise that the cops didn’t decide on their own to remove this guy from the auditorium somebody with Kerry told them to.

ok, I hate to stick up for the kid, but I have firsthand experience with Gainesville P.D., over four long years. if anything gets close to the piggish, anti-intellectual ideal of the koskidz’ version of the cops, GPD is it, jackboots and all. the kid should have known better, if he’d spent any time at all in town, than to go up against those goons. (if that’s who they were.)
he was an idiot, sure. but i didn’t see anything that necessitated tasering, etc. Is the kid an embarrasment to U of F? most certainly. but nothing like the embarassment those cops are (and have traditionally been) to the city of Gainesville.
