D-list celeb cancels “View” appearance over C-list celeb’s “offensive” conservative views; Update: We cancelled Barry, not vice versa, says “View”

We really need to get her for “Vent.”

TMZ has learned that legendary singer Barry Manilow has pulled out of his scheduled appearance on “The View” tomorrow — because he strongly disagrees with host Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s conservative view! Paging Rosie O’Donnell!

In an exclusive statement to TMZ, Barry says, “I strongly disagree with her views. I think she’s dangerous and offensive. I will not be on the same stage as her.” Barry, taking a stand!

Here’s a list of his political donations this year from Open Secrets. Note the last entry. Someone really needs to ask Barry his theory of 9/11 post haste.

bm2.jpg

So many exit questions to choose from. Will Elisabeth say something tomorrow? Will Rosie, er, weigh in? And is listening to Barry Manilow really “horrible punishment”?

Actually, we can answer that last one now.

Update: They’ve had enough turnover in the past six months. No sense losing Elisabeth, too.

A source tells TMZ that it’s not Barry who’s writing this song — in fact, “View” producers pulled the plug on Manilow’s performance when his people demanded that he appear on the show without Elisabeth. Manilow has in fact performed on the show twice before — both last year — when Hasselbeck’s been co-hosting.

Get a little more plastic surgery, Barry… you freak.

Finally! I couldn’t believe all the people willing to take this puppet-faced little fairy seriously. He gives pansies a bad name. Heavens…

EH crosses into rare territory: lovely-even-when-pregnant. I thought gay guys liked that?

Jaibones on September 17, 2007 at 4:38 PM

OK, Chicago V was 1972, so this would have been the end of Vietnam. So I guess they were flower children? Nothing lately though, huh? Actually I don’t remember that song, I waited and bought the greatest hits albums when I was older.

Rose on September 17, 2007 at 4:40 PM

Funny, I always thought the idea behind “The View” was to get other peoples (or women’s) perceptions on key issues in America. If Barbara Wa-Wa wanted to do a Charlie Rose type show, it would of ended years ago.

I still think Michelle & Friends should do a Sunday Morning Show — “The Right View.”

Wuptdo on September 17, 2007 at 4:44 PM

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a “conservative”? Since when?

Just because she is the only one on the program who is cute and not mentally challenged Barry Manilow picks on her?

DANEgerus on September 17, 2007 at 4:46 PM

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a “conservative”? Since when?

Were you not here during the great Hasselbeck/O’Donnell kerfuffle?

For the most part, posting here is sort of like preaching to the choir. But the message is always good to hear anyway. May I suggest you “cut & paste” your post here, and post them over here:

Manilow? MANILOW?

He still owes me money!

mojo on September 17, 2007 at 5:07 PM

Barry is simply exhibiting a standard liberal mindset that is most exaggerated in celebs: the sense of entitlement to have all contrary opinions silenced for their convenience. Diversity and tolerance are great principles for the little people to follow, but they don’t really apply to caring, special, people like Barry.

drunyan8315 on September 17, 2007 at 5:07 PM

Shouldn’t he feel lucky to be invited on ANY show?

He’s been a sellout his whole career with horrible cheesy music. So suddenly he takes his gigs seriously? And takes “The View” seriously?……..what a weirdo!

nottakingsides on September 17, 2007 at 5:07 PM

RushBaby Yes, but they were legally coming right? Am I thinking of the right song?

Dangerous thoughts give rise to thought crimes, according to the liberal belief system, and thought crimes must be punished to the maximum extant of the law. As Barry couldn’t possibly imagine sitting beside a mass murderer, so too won’t he sit next to a thought criminal.

It’s all very Orwellian, I suppose. Stupid liberals. Sigh.

Mindcrime on September 17, 2007 at 5:13 PM

Manilow being afraid of a good looking strong willed woman is not surprising, but being afraid of being on a forum with anyone who might not believe in your beliefs is just being a liberal. I have never watched The View and Manilow music is so bland its boring. Who really cares what this punk does or thinks?

Too darn funny to be believed.

Well, I guess Barry doesn’t want to catch Conservative Cooties. Fair enough. The next time you are all in Vegas, go see Wayne Newton instead. He’s a Republican.

I’m proud to say I was the first in my jr. high to announce “Barry Manilow sucks.”

Rose on September 17, 2007 at 5:09 PM

As a first-gen naturalized citizen myself, it’s the imagery of the dreams, the promised freedom, and the unmistakable allegiance to America that captivate me about Neil Diamond’s song. These lyrics are not corny to me in any way:

—————————————————
Far
We’ve been travelling far
Without a home, but not without a star

Free
Only want to be free
We huddle close, hang on to a dream

On the boats and on the planes
They’re coming to America
Never looking back again
They’re coming to America

Home, don’t it seem so far away
Oh, we’re travelling light today
In the eye of the storm
In the eye of the storm

Home, to a new and a shiny place
Make our bed, and we’ll say our grace
Freedom’s light burning warm
Freedom’s light burning warm

Everywhere around the world
They’re coming to America
Every time that flag’s unfurled
They’re coming to America

Got a dream to take them there
They’re coming to America
Got a dream they’ve come to share
They’re coming to America

My country ’tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
Of thee I sing
today

Two (2) things that you can always count on:

1. Islam is the religion of peace.
2. Liberals are tolerant of differing opinions and beliefs.

You know, the first slow dance I had with a girl was to “Tryin’ To Get the Feeling Again.” Now when I think of Barry Manilow–admittedly not a common phenomenon–instead of that pleasant memory I’ll think of this nonsense.

radjah shelduck on September 17, 2007 at 6:15 PM

Well, he figured since the Dixie Chicks are still kind of working he might as well get some of that mad moonbat money flowing into his coffers.

bbz123 on September 17, 2007 at 6:16 PM

SO many lyrics to choose from. SO many Manilow puns.

SO not going to admit how much I’ve always loved Weekend in New England. Ah, the days when Barry wrote for Hallmark and McDonald’s. I miss those days.

Meryl Yourish on September 17, 2007 at 6:23 PM

terryannonline, You have a point. I don’t think it is so much that it is offensive to have an opposing viewpoint as much as it is with their attitude. The hate Bush thing, and refusing to debate on Fox, and now this musician not wanting to be on a show because of one of the panelists being conservative. Conservatives are not running away from debate or discussion of the issues, the liberals are just making it so divisive and mean spirited. So we respond in kind. Probably not the best way to respond but these people are just so frustrating. If they would at least be civil about their difference of opinion.

Weekend in New England is my favorite. Even my husband who doesn’t much care for Barry likes that song.

Rose on September 17, 2007 at 6:34 PM

Oh wait, terry, maybe your remark was directed towards Barry. If so please disregard my post.

I understand that they’ve suspended water-boarding at Gitmo because they’ve found a more effective means of extracting information from enemy combatants. That’s right–no more Mr. Nice Guy. As you have probably already guessed, the most effective means of extracting information from the enemy is to play him an endless loop of Barry Manilow CDs.

My collie says:

I refuse to ride in the car of ANY human that plays Barry Manilow CDs. People that would do that sort of thing to a defenseless animal are as bad as Michael Vick.

Even now when you disappoint this fan

eeyore on September 17, 2007 at 8:17 PM

Frankly, The Great Troubadour Gordon Lightfoot was creating classics and making a name for himself long before Barry Manilow was playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on his toy piano, and Gordon is still going strong on the concert circuit despite health problems. Maybe The View should bring Gordon on instead, so we can see what a Real Legend looks like, instead of watching Barry wishy-wash his way through the bazillionth rendition of “Mandy”.

pilamaye on September 17, 2007 at 8:52 PM

Manilow is another Stristand. Babs doesn’t treat low income workers for her well. I saw Manilow is a lousy tipper on a website devoted to waiters complaining about bad customers. I sorta wish I could find the site again, but celebrity gossip isn’t usually my things at all.

Mark Steyn shows his genius at the Corner:

His name was Barry
He was a showboy
But that was thirty years ago
When he used to do the show
Now it’s a talkshow
But not for Barry
Still in the suit he used to wear
Faded gel streaks in his hair
He won’t return their call
No matter how they crawl
He lost his slot
And he lost his marbles
But he’s found Ron Paul

He can’t cope-a
Cope-a with Hassel
The toughest chick west of Newcastle
Not like Rosie
Rosie O’Donnell
Barry knows she’ll melt
When he brings up steel melt
He can’t cope-a
He lost his slot…

How much of a left-wing weenie coward do you have to be afraid of Elisabeth Hasselbeck????

I mean, really; I can see a liberal being afraid to have to debate Michelle, or Ann Coulter… But Elizabeth? It would be more dangerous to debate Mr. Rodgers or Barney the purple… whatever.

Also, if he’s objecting to one of the show’s stars, then why was he ever scheduled to appear on The View in the first place?

How’s that career doing Barry?

It’s quite obviously a publicity stunt. His new album is out today. What better way to sell a few copies than to get your name in the news? Most everyone forgot about him completely. He needed to create buzz.
