D-list celeb cancels “View” appearance over C-list celeb’s “offensive” conservative views; Update: We cancelled Barry, not vice versa, says “View”

We really need to get her for “Vent.”

TMZ has learned that legendary singer Barry Manilow has pulled out of his scheduled appearance on “The View” tomorrow — because he strongly disagrees with host Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s conservative view! Paging Rosie O’Donnell!

In an exclusive statement to TMZ, Barry says, “I strongly disagree with her views. I think she’s dangerous and offensive. I will not be on the same stage as her.” Barry, taking a stand!

Here’s a list of his political donations this year from Open Secrets. Note the last entry. Someone really needs to ask Barry his theory of 9/11 post haste.

bm2.jpg

So many exit questions to choose from. Will Elisabeth say something tomorrow? Will Rosie, er, weigh in? And is listening to Barry Manilow really “horrible punishment”?

Actually, we can answer that last one now.

Update: They’ve had enough turnover in the past six months. No sense losing Elisabeth, too.

A source tells TMZ that it’s not Barry who’s writing this song — in fact, “View” producers pulled the plug on Manilow’s performance when his people demanded that he appear on the show without Elisabeth. Manilow has in fact performed on the show twice before — both last year — when Hasselbeck’s been co-hosting.

Hey Barry, who’s tortured more prisoners lately? You or Elizabeth?

Actually, any place with Barry “Commie” Manilow is prison if you ask me. Ask any elevator operator.

Keith_Z on September 17, 2007 at 2:26 PM

Anyone who doesn’t want to appear with Elizabeth Hasselbeck is clearly gay, although this isn’t a revelation in Manilow’s case. He’s just afraid of strong women.

Aw, that’s too bad. I like Barry Manilow’s music, even though the paradox of him not writing “I Write The Songs” makes my head hurt.

What has Hasselbeck ever said that could be considered anywhere nearly offensive enough to warrant that childish behavior, even among people who disagree with her?

Yet another example of the famed liberal tolerance for all viewpoints. It doesn’t exist. They can’t even be civil about those who disagree with them.

Better yet, will Barbara say something in defense just as she did for Rosie?

Also, if he’s objecting to one of the show’s stars, then why was he ever scheduled to appear on The View in the first place?

I realize that not all of them are on every show, but he had to have realized he had a good chance of her being there.

fogw on September 17, 2007 at 2:46 PM

I enjoyed that video clip of Barry Manilow singing “Coppa Cabana.” I enjoyed the short dance performance of The Hustle at the end of the clip as well.

I have sung “Coppa Cabana” to my children once in a while, substituting each child’s name for Lola, and I don’t sing about gunshots, but I make up other, more friendly and cheerful lyrics, e.g., “Her name is Gabby, she loves her daddy, and her daddy loves her too - woo, woo, woo! She rides on horses, and plays with kittens, and when the weather’s cold out, she wears her mittens … ” etc. The substituted lyrics are never the same. I never know what they will be. It is fun, and the song is fun to listen to and to dance to.

Nevertheless, I never knew Manilow was such a spineless wimp, and I never knew that he was a left winger and a hater.

My eyes have been opened!

To echo the words of some others here on this thread, Manilow’s behavior says a lot about the “Left’s” tolerance of other viewpoints, or rather, the left’s lack of tolerance, or their intolerance.

Pro-choice?

I don’t think so!

William

William2006 on September 17, 2007 at 2:47 PM

Looks like Manilow has been hanging out with Streisand and her husband.

I’d like to know what these people talk about at their cocktail parties.

Oh please. Susan Sarandon was on last week, and she managed to survive (admittedly, she was ice cold to Hasselbeck).

No surprised that she’s tougher than Manilow, however.

saiga on September 17, 2007 at 3:07 PM

Of course, this is all a publicity stunt. Elisabeth’s views have been the same since when? If he felt so strongly about this, he wouldn’t have booked the show in the first place. But now, all of a sudden, he’s going to pull out of the show the day before? Did Elisabeth’s opinions change since the show was booked?

CookeyD on September 17, 2007 at 3:07 PM

He lists his address as Woodland Hills, CA. hahahahaha. I grew up in WH. It’s an LA suburb in the southwest area of the San Fernando Valley. Middle class. I can see his agent with a storefront office along Ventura Boulevard, in the shadow of the freeway. At least he didn’t list Canoga Park.

How’s that career doing Barry?

Mallard T. Drake on September 17, 2007 at 3:09 PM

Barry is afraid of “dangerous” Elisabeth so instead of confronting her he runs away from the “monster”. Has he looked in the mirror lately. I saw his face-lifted skeleton on QVC trying to sell records and thought at the time how scary he looked. Liberalism is not good for the health.

Guess he fooled me!

Conservatives are the tolerant ones, liberals are the intolerant ones.

jimbo2 on September 17, 2007 at 3:29 PM

Can anybody explain the liberal method of tolerance to me?

They cancel a Presidential debate because it is going to be on Fox News.

They go on Today Show and Larry King because they know they will get puffball questions but refuse to go on Hannity and Colmes unless they only have to talk to Alan.

Now they can’t even go on a rabidly leftist program because of a conservative cutie who finally had enough of a blowhard lesbian whacko?

Are the liberal ideas so far-out of the norm they can’t stand up the “scrutiny” of discussion?

highhopes on September 17, 2007 at 3:31 PM

When liberals don’t have the answers for what they think, they can’t face the facts.

Just like the Dems won’t go on Fox for a debate.

Chicago V album - song is State of the Union, by Robert Lamm

(Lyrics listed at http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Chicago/State-Of-The-Union.html)

I was talking ’bout the state of the union
How there’s no one now in power thinking of me
I was saying how we ought to try to fix it
Find a leader who is not afraid to be
Then a voice came out of the darkness
Saying “Tear the system down”
Tear it down
I was thinking ’bout how that was very crazy
And I tried to find a way to tell him so
But when I did I used a word that was quite nasty
How the policeman heard me now I’ll never know
Then a voice came out of the darkness
Saying “Tear the system down”
Tear it down - down to the ground
I was wrestled of to one side of the theatre
And they said I’d have to go right to jail
They don’t permit coarse language in their city
But they did accept a large amount of bail
Then a voice came out of the darkness
Saying “Tear the system down”
Tear it down - down to the ground
