Video: Michelle slams MoveOn’s Petraeus ad

A lefty friend told me yesterday she thought the NRSC’s response spot was unfair because multiple Democrats did, in fact, denounce the “Betray Us” ad. Did they, though? Let’s see what we’ve got. Waffles called it “over the top” and said he didn’t like it, a weak denunciation but a denunciation nonetheless. Score one for my friend. How about the party leaders, Reid and Pelosi? Quote:

“I would have preferred that they won’t do such an ad,” Pelosi said. The Speaker said it is not her prerogative “to say how people express themselves” and that the ad is “a demonstration of the frustration that people have about the war.”

That’s not condemnation, it’s excuse-making. At best she’s saying not that the ad’s unfair but that it’s not “helpful” to the Democrats politically, which is both true and beside the point. As for Dingy Harry:

Asked early Monday if this was the right message for his party to send, a member of the Democratic leadership, speaking on background, curtly answered, “No.”

I can’t prove it to you but I swear when I linked that story in headlines on Monday it specifically identified Reid as the source. The gutless tool must have called up CNN after they published it and told him to remove his name lest his masters at MoveOn be displeased.

Here’s the real money quote, though, which I’ve linked before and which my friend doesn’t seem to grasp the significance of. Politico, last Friday:

“No one wants to call [Petraeus] a liar on national TV,” noted one Democratic senator, who spoke on the condition on anonymity. “The expectation is that the outside groups will do this for us.”

It’s good cop/bad cop. The Democrats can afford to (very mildly) chastise MoveOn because they’re on the same team playing the same game. MoveOn carries water for them to the base while the “mainstream” Democrats profess (again, very mild) shock, shock for the benefit of the independents they need to win the election. It’s so transparently phony they’re willing to talk on the record about it to political newspapers. Like MM says in the clip, “The extreme has become the center,” which makes the liberals willing to call the ad what it was the real fringe.

The Times, under pressure, apparently agreed to run Rudy’s ad for the same rate as they gave MoveOn. Not everyone was so lucky.

You think I have only one woman friend, do you?

I’ll have you know I have two.

Love it when Michelle points out the hypocrisy of the Democrats, it always brings a smile to my face.

Aren’t ALL left wing blogs fourth-rate?

I mean, we see this kind of idiocy from Kos and HuffPoo all the time.

Michelle’s lookin’ good as always.

BKennedy on September 14, 2007 at 1:18 PM

Potestas Democraticorum delenda est!

And the same to moveon.org, codepink, and Soros!

If we don’t destroy them, the “Brownshirt” party will destroy freedom in America. Because as Michelle says, moveon and the Democrats are one!

I like (and agree) with Eddy’s comment that Michelle is one of the smartest women she knows!

georgej on September 14, 2007 at 1:19 PM

Is it bad that half the time I lose track of what Michelle is saying simply because she’s so damn stunningly gorgeous?

So wait, you have two lady friends, both lefties…what about Michelle? You better make a correction or you’ll never see an iPhone…

Bad Candy on September 14, 2007 at 1:31 PM

Good that we arent letting this slide. Its one thing for Kos and Huff puff to pull this crap but another for the MSM to try and get away with it.

Here is another case in point with NY TImes. They are mocking a story about McCain and his new “No Surrender” tour with a comedy central vid of John Stewart mocking it by calling it “I will see you in hell” tour

The “mainstream” Democrat party in no different from CPUSA. Why is anyone surprised?

No, it’s the Slimes reporting, after all The Slimes did invent yellow journalism…

Can you imagine if Fox news had done this to Obama or Hillary what the outcry would be ?

William Amos on September 14, 2007 at 1:35 PM

Is the idiot from PMSNBC going to make Michelle the worst person again for this?

I can’t prove it to you but I swear when I linked that story in headlines on Monday it specifically identified Reid as the source.

It did specify Reid initially. I’m not good with links, but with luck, this will work. Scroll down a bit for the MoveOn headline:

You are very good at links, here is the exact quote from your link. Good work.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed frustration with the ad. Asked early Monday if this was the right message for his party to send, the Nevada Democrat curtly answered, “No.” (Posted 3:08 p.m.)

Durbin Retreats Emphatically for Antiwar Movement?

Democratic Reactionaries Emanating Aura of Malevolence?

Students praised the state legislature’s passage Tuesday of an act that would give undocumented students greater access to state financial resources when going to college.

I like your hair that way as well.

The liberals have truly screwed up with this one – but the GOP is in such sorry shape that they can’t take advantage of it.

BKennedy on September 14, 2007 at 2:09 PM

Didn’t MoveOn take their name from a speech by Bill Clinton, where he said something like, “It’s time to move on”? I’d say that MoveOn has been trying to take over the Democrats for quite a while.

Aren’t ALL left wing blogs fourth-rate?

I had to replay that, because at first I thought she said “fourth-grade“. Silly me, I shouldn’t insult 4th graders by comparing them to leftwing blogs ;>)

Haha!

DREAM stands for “Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors” and it’s essentially “Shamnesty — for kids!”. It’s Senate bill S.774 for those who are interested.

The Heritage Foundation is keeping an eye on it.

I guess Durbin thought DREAM sounded better that FSFI: Free $&*^ For Illegals.

BKennedy on September 14, 2007 at 2:20 PM

Sigh.

Kathy Griffin? 300 comments.

Here? 17. Make it 18.

And this is important. If there’s a Jesus, even he probably thinks so.

Astute analysis. The good cop/bad cop thing is exactly right.

I just hope most Americans – including mainstream Democrats – can see through that smokescreen.

I really can’t even believe we’re now at the point where – for partisan reasons – people are essentially calling our highest military leaders traitors, in time of war.

It makes me glad both my (WW II veteran) grandfathers aren’t alive to see it.

techno_barbarian on September 14, 2007 at 3:58 PM

Right on the spot Michelle. MoveDemOn needs to be taken to task on this and you are doing an excellent job of it.

Hey, I like that MoveDemOn.

BobK on September 14, 2007 at 4:41 PM

Wonder if the decent, everyday Americans who vote Democratic will ever start to wonder, Hey, if MoveOn has bought and paid for the Democratic party, maybe I’m getting disenfranchised here! I reckon this incident was a pretty big clue-by-four.

RushBaby on September 14, 2007 at 5:10 PM

Cheap shot, juvenile wordplay from Moveon.org about a guy I really admire. However, Michelle’s fourth-rate left-wing blog comment had a false ring to it. Given that Allah, just above, calls Harry Reid “Dingy Harry” is Michelle implying that HotAir is a fourth-rate blog? I don’t think it is.

Name calling is not helpful to exchanging ideas. It can be fun and sometimes witty. What doesn’t work is to engage in name-calling and then blame the other side for doing the same thing.

If you are playing a “no blood no foul” game then it works that way for both sides.

dedalus on September 14, 2007 at 5:14 PM

One of my old college buddies is a move on shmuck. There is no reasoning with him. It is like he lost his mind.

These people are obviously sick.

saiga on September 14, 2007 at 5:33 PM

That was a good interview on both sides, with both women on top of their facts. It’s a nice contrast to the baldfaced lies and filibustering you usually get from the Democrats. Bravo.

We can’t allow the real purveyors of treason and sedition to get away with calling a man who’s served our country honorably a traitor.

ReubenJCogburn on September 14, 2007 at 5:48 PM

dedalus on September 14, 2007 at 5:14 PM

Dude, the no-blood-no-foul game you suggest was never agreed to by anyone, nor suggested by anyone, so your analogy is not apt. The 1,000,000 dollar difference here is, Petraeus is not a politician or lobbyist for a particular constituency.

It would be as if a group ran a full-page ad in the WSJ or Washington Times calling Anthony Zinni “Tony Treas-inny” just because he had some issues with how the Iraq war was laid on.

RD on September 14, 2007 at 7:17 PM

In fact, even my analogy stinks. The only comparable example is, some Clinton-era general being called a traitor after merely doing his or her job.

RD on September 14, 2007 at 7:19 PM

Dude, the no-blood-no-foul game you suggest was never agreed to by anyone, nor suggested by anyone, so your analogy is not apt.

“No blood no foul” isn’t always explicitly agreed to at the start of a game, but a lot of games evolve that way. Point is if you throw an elbow or, in this case, name-call you aren’t really credible pointing the finger when the other side does it.

My question is was Michelle right when she said that “This kind of play on words” is what you’d expect on a fourth rate blog? She was speaking to the rhetorical device not the target of the rhetoric.

dedalus on September 14, 2007 at 7:45 PM

kind of off topic but bill called Jerkaldo out tonight on the factor about his comments about wanting to spit on Michelle .
I don’t know if bill bought it but it seems there might still be some heat on Jerkaldo and rightfully so .

Pressure has to be sustained on the members of M.O.L.D. (Move On Lap Dogs) namely the Democratic Presidential candidates. They would love nothing more than to see this go away.
I know Sen. Coleman(R) has denounced the MoveOn ad, but I have yet to hear back from my other senator, Sen. Klobuchar(D). It will be interesting to see how she dodges the issue.
