Video: Kathy Griffin invites Jesus to “suck it”

posted at 9:38 am on September 14, 2007 by Allahpundit

I don’t get Steve Doocy here. She’s trying to be funny, he says, but then she’s not trying to be funny when she says “this award is my god now”? And this too from Lauren Green, whose op-ed you’re going to swoon over:

When she accepted her long-awaited award, she said: “A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.”

Now I could have been mildly insulted at that and turned the other cheek, as the founder of Christianity taught. But then she went on to say “Suck it, Jesus. This award is my God now.”

Aren’t you supposed to turn the other cheek at precisely the moment when it’s hardest to do so? Otherwise, what’s the great moral value in it?

Someone will explain it to me below, I’m sure. Caution — comment bait ahead.

It’s true, if HE cared about the Emmy’s, the Dog Whisperer would have one.

She hasn’t been funny for about a decade.

Malpaso on September 14, 2007 at 9:44 AM

What’s the percentage in saying something like that ?…I don’t get it.

moc23 on September 14, 2007 at 9:45 AM

lol oh that works, invoke Jesus when saying how you should turn the other cheek, then promptly ignore the message because some dumb broad who long ago went past her shelf life decides to run her mouth.

is it just me, or do all these jesus freaks keep forgetting that damned lesson?

ernesto on September 14, 2007 at 9:46 AM

funny line, blasphemous but funny.

zane on September 14, 2007 at 9:46 AM

Thank Allah she didn’t say “Suck it Muhammad”.

Imagine the outrage.

fogw on September 14, 2007 at 9:47 AM

I think the media is making a mountain of a molehill on this one. Kathy Griffin makes a career out of saying controversial (and often unfunny) things to get media coverage. It’s her schtick.

Mindcrime on September 14, 2007 at 9:47 AM

I don’t get her. She’s won an award for not having any talent.

Whatever. On the ladder rising from the muck, one rung above the Grammy is the Emmy.

I like this response to it.

Knock if off with the “Jesus freaks” rhetoric. Next time’s a banning.

I linked that in the post, terryann.

Allahpundit on September 14, 2007 at 9:48 AM

No way! Kathy Griffin saying something offensive? Get out of town!

The “Suck it” bit may be a problem with the censors, though. She should have self-censored. “This award is my god now!” is pretty funny without the “Suck it Jesus” in front of it.

Nethicus on September 14, 2007 at 9:49 AM

A provocative comedienne says something provocative. And Fox reacts accordingly. I’m shocked, shocked! It’s like a kabuki play.

C’mon. Let the Ds be the party that becomes predictably outraged when a stupid, minor event dovetails into their agenda.

albo on September 14, 2007 at 9:50 AM

Well, “suck it” is one of her trademark lines. It’s not meant to be taken literally; it’s tantamount to saying “step off.”

I understand she made a career out of this. The excuse is she’s a comedian, so it should be allowed. However, at the same time, Don Imus shouldn’t be fired and disgraced for saying something they don’t like, when that’s been the point of his career for 30 years.

amerpundit on September 14, 2007 at 9:51 AM

I’m pleasantly surprised at the comments thus far. No long harangues about the poisonous effects of Hollyweird? No effusive praise for Lauren Green for insisting that we owe every good thing we have to Christianity?

Well, the thread is young yet.

Yea, it offends me. I guess I’m just a “jesus freak”. But you know what? We’re used to it. I’m not planning on burning any buildings or stabbing any film makers over it. That’s what I call turning the other cheek” ernesto.
We have a damn right to be offended and to say so. Just like you holier-than-thou evangelical secularists.

The difference among the media elite, however, is this: It’s okay to rag on Christianity, but it’s not okay to rag on race.

Don Imus is schmuck to the nth degree, but I agree he should never have been fired for his idiotic comments, especially since that’s been his schtick since the get go. It was extremely hypocritical of CBS. But then, CBS is run by Les Moonves, who’s a bit of a world class wanker himself.

Mindcrime on September 14, 2007 at 9:53 AM

Knock if off with the “Jesus freaks” rhetotoric

I don’t have any problem with the phrase “Jesus Freaks”. It was used as a title to a Christian song.

terryannonline on September 14, 2007 at 9:54 AM

As a Christian, I just shake my head. I dont think it should even phase christians. I would say that she wears her ovaries on the outside if she said something regarding Islam or some other religion. People know that Christians are not going to issue a fatwa on critics.

Allahpundit on September 14, 2007 at 9:50 AM

Does not make it socially palatable or acceptable to Christians. No more than Imus using ‘nappy headed ho’.

Wade on September 14, 2007 at 9:56 AM

Yeah, before this turns into one of those threads where people of all non-Muslim faiths congratulate themselves for not behaving like savages when criticized, let me stipulate that Christians should be congratulated for not behaving like savages when criticized. No need for the 100 different iterations of this point that will follow.

Allahpundit on September 14, 2007 at 9:56 AM

I think it’s pretty funny. Jesus would probably get a good laugh out of it…
My only quibble is that people more often say “I’d like to thank God…” rather than JC…
I guess by invoking JC she personifies the joke a little and it’s funnier…
Now that I think of it, that’s sort of JC’s job on Earth, isn’t it…:)

My wife thinks she’s hysterical. Frankly, she bores me. The self-deprecating D-list schtick is getting old.

JammieWearingFool on September 14, 2007 at 10:00 AM

Probably one day when she’s on her bed, dying, she’ll probably, most likel, pray to some spiritual entity for help and forgiveness and certainly not to Oscar. And then suddenly she’ll see a red guy standing with a grin, “Welcome! Suck it up while you’re here.”

Kokonut on September 14, 2007 at 10:00 AM

I’m really unsure why anyone cares what she says. I just get this stinking feeling that it’s a big deal because Muslims gets all offended at everything and this is the MSM way of proving they are not the only ones that get offended. In other words it’s the MSM way of saying Muslims getting offend is a myth propagated by anti-Islam bigots.

She’s the female version of Andy Dick. Andy of course, is this years winner of Got his a** beaten by Who?! Co-recipient Jon Lovitz refused to share the stage to pick up the award.

austinnelly on September 14, 2007 at 10:03 AM

I understand why people actually do thank Jesus for having a hand in their successes – I also understand (though think it strange) when people invoke Jesus even when they don’t care all that much about him (Michael Vick, Paris Hilton,…).

It doesn’t bother me all that much the she said this. For one thing, I think it is a little over-reaching to expect someone who is not a Christian to behave the way (we expect) Christians do. Besides, how is this any different from all the crap thrown at Christianity at other times. Free speech means being able to say stupid things. Though, it isn’t all that clever, or all that original.

I think that the better line, and more original one, is from Homer Simpson. Paraphrasing: “Now I know that God doesn’t just care about professional athletes and award winners, but also about losers like me.”

nailinmyeye on September 14, 2007 at 10:03 AM

heh……..not impressed/not offended….she wants to say this stuff that is up to her. Now what would have impressed me if she said she was going to cover Emmy with a burka when she got home. That would have taken guts. The Jesus remarks, she knew, went to people who wouldn’t get out a grinding stone and to people who agree with her.

edgehead on September 14, 2007 at 10:04 AM

I agree with her. Jesus wouldn’t have anything to do with rewarding her for her terrible comedy routines. Satan was clearly the architect.

csdeven on September 14, 2007 at 10:05 AM

Unfunny, but worser things have been said about Christianity, its Founder, and its members. But why does this easy, nonchalant attack on Christianity draw more ire and attention than someone like Hitchens who equates believing in any religion with a mental disease?

Spc Steve on September 14, 2007 at 10:05 AM

Jesus would know what’s in her heart. She’s a performer, just like the people that play Pontius Pilot in a pageant. If she really means ’suck it Jesus’, that’s between Him and her. In the meantime, I thought the whole schtick was funny and in keeping with her humor. She’s offensive, I laugh.

locomotivebreath1901 on September 14, 2007 at 10:08 AM

I couldn’t care less about this woman’s comments. I didn’t even know she was still around, and I can’t blame a z-list celeb for trying to drum up a little face time with controversy.

And I don’t care that she was offensive, or that she took a swipe at Christianity. I don’t even care if she offended God Himself, or that she was blasphemous.

It’s a free country. I fought for her right to be an idiot. God bless her for proving yet again how truly free we are.

And being a good conservative, I’m happy to let the marketplace sort her out. I suspect she’ll regret offending a large majority of the viewing public. And I love how that works.

Nope. Don’t care at all.

But what I do care about … and care about deeply … is that contrast others have mentioned between the treatment of Christians and the treatment of Muslims. The point isn’t that the same comments about Mohammad would have led to riots all over the world, to actual deaths, maybe a lot of them. And the point isn’t that Christians will act civilized. Of course they will. Everyone knows the difference, whether they admit or not.

No – the point that I care about is that Griffin would not have dared make her comments about Islam. And the producers wouldn’t have dared air it. And the whole world – of non-Muslims – would have condemned it.

That terrifies me. Western society exists almost solely because we do *not* operate that way. To kowtow to *any* group in such a singular fashion is dangerous; to do it to the very same group that wants to annihilate us is suicidal.

Dhimmitude takes many forms and this is perhaps the most troubling. I may loathe our coarse culture, but when that coarseness is spread evenly – it demonstrates our freedoms. It may be offensive, but we need the idiots to offend the Jews and the blacks and the Christians … to offend everybody.

But that must – especially – include the Muslims.

The war on terror will start to be won as soon as you hear an idiot like Griffin tell Mohammad to suck it. The war on terror will be halfway to victory when Mohammad jokes are as common as Mexican jokes. (And the saddest part is that if you’re going to base your act on ethnic and racial jokes, as so many comedians do … Muslims are just ripe with material)

If it doesn’t start to happen, if people don’t start openly offending Muslims just like the offend Christians and Jews and white folks and black folks … well, I’d say that the historians will note this attitude as the turning point in our lost war. But, of course, historians won’t be writing that, will they? Not if this continues.

Hey. Mohammad. Suck it, pal. Join the club.

Professor Blather on September 14, 2007 at 10:09 AM

No, I don’t think people should be congratulated for acting human. It’s how you’re supposed to act. Do you congratulate people for not peeing at the dinner table? Should we congratulate those Senators (who haven’t been caught yet) who haven’t solicited sex in bathrooms? This just reminds me too much of what I saw in classrooms while I was student teaching. In the old days, you got awards for reading above grade level books and writing a 2 page report with minimal grammar errors. Now, we had out awards to little Johnny for not throwing rocks on the playground. I just think our expectations have sunk too far.

austinnelly on September 14, 2007 at 10:09 AM

“She’s the female version of Andy Dick”

I’m sorry, folks. While some people may be offended by the fact that Kathy G. is a self-described fallen Catholic, and while her act is rife with obscenities (which dont bother me as much as they do some)….

to compare her to Andy Dick is ridiculous.

Kathy Griffin is way, way, WAYYYY more talented and way, way, WAYYYY funnier than Andy Dick will ever be the longest day he lives.

Having watched and enjoyed Kathy G for quite a while (until recently when she has gotten much more political in her act than she used to be) this was pretty much par for the course for her. And at least she was truthful… no one has less to do with her winning than Jesus. Thats a fact!!

Always Right on September 14, 2007 at 10:10 AM

AP, yes, we are to turn the other cheek, but keep in mind, we only have two.

Sensei Ern on September 14, 2007 at 10:12 AM

I couldn’t care less about that airhead and her blasphemous comments.

Not that I’m not offended, of course I am, but G-d is much better at taking care of those things than I am. Even on my most angry, sadistic days I can’t think up something half as horrid as what awaits that daft cow in the afterlife.

I find it interesting that the same MSM that won’t say a thing that might possibly offend a muslim out of “respect” (it’s the new “cowardice”, man) for their religion have no trouble whatsoever lauding this cow and guffawing at her “humorous” statement.

Double standards? Well, if standards are good, then surely double standards are twice as good, right?

No surprise there. None whatsoever.

I don’t think so. I am shamefully embarrased to admit that I think Andy Dick is funny as hell. And Kathy G. is actually the female version of Ellen DeGeneres.

edgehead on September 14, 2007 at 10:14 AM

Yawn.

Though I would like to take a moment to point out that, in the current environment, it’s not “self congratulation” to point out that Christians don’t riot over things like this and Muslims do. Most Christians probably wouldn’t bother to insist on the distinctions if not for the the intolerant secularists who always mutter “Christians are just as bad as Muslims” whenever Muslims act up over a cartoon or whatever is the Islamic Rage Boy motive of the day. The secularists would have it that Christians just sit back and take the secularist non sequiturs as logical arguments, and just accept a smear to be taken as truth. Sorry, no sale.

In what universe has either Kathy Griffin or Andy Dick done a single thing that anyone could consider funny?

Do you have a clip or link? I’ve never seen either do anything approaching funny or talented or interesting. They make Tom Green look like Laurence Olivier.

But maybe I’m missing something (I sure don’t go out of my way to watch them). Post something funny they did. I wanna see with my own eyes.

I mean other than getting beaten up by Jon Lovitz. That was admittedly funny.

————-

By the way, I hate to ask … but what’d she win an Emmy for? I didn’t even know she was on television.

Professor Blather on September 14, 2007 at 10:18 AM

Question: Why does Kathy behave this way?

This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone,” and, “A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. – 1 Peter 2:7-9

Bryan on September 14, 2007 at 10:16 AM

That is a very, very good point.

I seem to constantly hear that Christians are just the same (just as dangerous, Rosie?) as Muslims. I hear it constantly.

So if they’re the same … how does it make sense *not* to congratulate them for acting … differently?

Somebody in the secular media needs to circulate a memo with a decision: are Muslims and Christians the same – or aren’t they? And if they are the same, how exactly do you explain the very predictable differences in behavior when someone like Griffin does something like this?

Professor Blather on September 14, 2007 at 10:22 AM

When I saw the clip, I cringed. Kathy is on a dangerous road. A road I was on once. The only unforgivable sin is denying Jesus as the Christ. I think the response most Christians have to this is to pray for her, and pray for our culture.

I’m sure many people here are offended and angered simply by hearing Kathy Griffin say something like this. I can understand why you would be. As for me, though, the fact that she said this does not bother me at all. What does bother me is the way the media handles it and in many ways celebrates it and rewards it. What does bother me is the double standards. I hate the double standards. If she had just switched Jesus with Muhammed all hell would break loose in more ways then one. The MSM would paint her as being bigoted and unnecesarily provocative and mean towards our peaceful Muslim friends (meanwhile our peaceful Muslim friends would be right smack in the middle of turning our streets into a war zone and burning effigies of Kathy Griffin while holding up signs that read “Behead Those Who Insult Islam”). The MSM would be talking about her “unusual” anger towards Islam and would then go on to show documentaries about how the Prophet Muhammed loved puppies and children.

The smugness inherent in this post is among the number one reason that I find Christians hypocritical.

Their fake humility and bloated sense of self righteousness is always revealed when the typical Christian gloats in the punishments that their God has waiting for the non believer.

The overwhelming message of Christianity is, “I am better than you.”

Jesus loves you so much that if you don’t eat his body and drink his blood and accept him as your personal savior he will make certain that you spend all of eternity in never ending torment.

I would tell him to suck it, too.

JiangxiDad on September 14, 2007 at 10:33 AM

Griffin’s speech starts out okay:

“A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.”

Anybody who has seen one nanosecond of her routine would agree that Christ had absolutely nothing to do with her getting a cheap hunk of metal. If anything, the woman’s whole career is based on being a contrarian when it comes to traditional values.

She should have stopped there but she went on to say:

“Suck it, Jesus. This award is my God now.”

That’s just offensive no matter the context. Ignoring the fact that she is claiming to worship a false God, when it comes to faith saying “Suck it” Jesus, Buddah, Allah, or whatever is going to offend somebody. Griffin achieved her goal with her usual Christian-bashing routine and she will probably attract larger audiences as a result.

P.S. In the debate whether or not Griffin is the female Andy Dick, I’d suggest a better comparison is that she is the female version of Andrew Dice Clay.

And I’d add, NOBODY is calling for her death the way the Muslim’s do whenever somebody insults Islam.

In what universe has either Kathy Griffin or Andy Dick done a single thing that anyone could consider funny?

That’s the burning question.

Spirit of 1776 on September 14, 2007 at 10:38 AM

Allah, I think you’re off base on the “turn the other cheek” shot at Lauren Green.

The Christian notion of turning the other cheek is not a mandate to become a doormat. In fact, the phrase is a call for tolerance and temperance. In Jesus’s time, a slap to the face was a challenge and escalation to a fight (think of a Medieval style glove slap). While the context is larger than this (as you might suppose), one way to paraphrase the sentiment would be, “don’t go down to her level.”

As an aside, I’m often amused by the fact that so often irreligious people take scripture out of context by using a rigid and contemporary literal interpretation of a Bible passage in attempts to show up religious folk. It’s funny to me because it just shows how ignorant they are concerning the subject they are critiquing.

P.S. Another Bible passage that is misused and misunderstood by media and the religiously ignorant is the “eye for an eye” passage from Exodus. I’ll give you a hint; it’s the foundation for the modern legal notion of a punishment fitting the crime rather than being disproportionately severe.

It’s long past time we start beheading those who insult Christianity!

The smugness inherent in this post is among the number one reason that I find Christians hypocritical.
JayHaw Phrenzie on September 14, 2007 at 10:31 AM

You would find Christians hypocritical if they said “have nice day”.

right2bright on September 14, 2007 at 10:41 AM

Aren’t you supposed to turn the other cheek at precisely the moment when it’s hardest to do so? Otherwise, what’s the great moral value in it?

Why not write her an email and ask her, or were these questions just for mockery?

right2bright on September 14, 2007 at 10:41 AM

That’s because the unspoken part of their sentence is “…because one day you will burn in hell, heathen.”

JayHaw Phrenzie on September 14, 2007 at 10:43 AM

Green prob’ly used the “turn the other cheek” phrase like most folks do . . . meaning they pretty much ignore the offense.
But the second part of Griffin’s oh-so-hip, in-your-face speech was something Green couldn’t ignore.

Ernesto (see waaaaaaay back in this thread for his wisdom), point out to me (and all us Jesus Freaks) Christian Rage Boy (or Girl). The basic human response is typified by Islamic Rage Boy and his ilk.

Have you seen her act?

She is a gay-man trapped in a woman’s body.

DANEgerus on September 14, 2007 at 10:47 AM

Turning the other cheek does not preclude being offended, or even outraged. It only precludes a right uppercut.

While it is disingenuous for many people to invoke Christ when accepting awards, and that part of the joke may have worked, that does not make mocking Christ, Himself, fair game. That is where she showed her contempt, not her sense of humor.

I agree. Why doesn’t Lauren Green, though?

How about this guy:

The only difference is that Islamic Rage Boy is slightly more intelligent.

Got it. Famous libs saying libsh+t is no different than my sister-in-law saying it. Shouldn’t pay attention to either. Thanks.

Where does she advocate a right uppercut, or anything in retaliation?

jihadwatcher on September 14, 2007 at 10:53 AM

It’s nice to know free speech is still alive.
Good for her.

Killgore Trout on September 14, 2007 at 10:50 AM

I don’t think the government has anything to do with Kathy Griffin’s comments. So, uh, the free speech issue isn’t even applicable here.

As

pointed out turn the other cheek does not mean what most people think it means. Turning the other cheek is not an act of submission or passivity, it is in fact a very dramatic aggressive demand to be treated with equality.

In order to strike a person in front of you on the left cheek you have to back hand them, in our society this is know as bitch slapping, just as in Jesus’ time even now this is a extremely derogatory insult. It means you are not my equal and not not deserve to be treated with fairness or equality.

By turning to them your right cheek you are demanding that they apologize for insulting you and treat you like as an equal.

No, I mean that Green obviously perceives some distinction in terms of turning the other cheek between feeling mildly insulted and feeling full-blown offended. She says she would have turned the other cheek at the “Jesus had nothing to do with this” comment, but…
