Video: Geraldo apologizes to Michelle on the Factor

It’s best if I let the boss speak for the site on this one. I’ll update when she posts about it.

Apologizing on national television for telling a national newspaper you want to spit on one of your colleagues. There’s something you don’t see every day, huh? Exit question: Will this make him Monday’s worst person in the world?

I sent this to O’Reilly:
.
Tell Geraldo :
Not accepted by the rest of us.
No humility in his words, only justification and more nonsense, and that does NOT equate to an apology.

shooter on September 14, 2007 at 9:01 PM

That’s true shooter but for the sake of her “fox family” it’s best to take his public word and move on. I’m sure Michelle will take the high road.

Zorro on September 14, 2007 at 9:03 PM

Kudos for O’Reilly for pushing him on this.

You are a liar Geraldo. Bt even that doesnt make us want to spit on you.

Still you got off luckyfor the “anti amnesty people are just like Nazis” crap.

William Amos on September 14, 2007 at 9:05 PM

Zorro on September 14, 2007 at 9:03 PM

I concur.

PBoilermaker on September 14, 2007 at 9:05 PM

Geraldo = loser.

And thus will it ever be so.

wccawa on September 14, 2007 at 9:05 PM

That was a good apology.

You can’t expect a person to destroy themselves when they apologize. This apology admitted fault and offered no excuse except for the honest one he was mad. It said that doesn’t make it right, yada, yada.

I’m sure Michelle Malkin will accept her. She’s probably making too much moolah at Fox not too.

:-P

Christoph on September 14, 2007 at 9:06 PM

Awesome. Don’t bundle me in that “rest of us”, shooter.

Spirit of 1776 on September 14, 2007 at 9:06 PM

Let the people say amen!

(I just noticed that it’s a little cooler out…did hell just freeze over?)

1GooDDaDDy on September 14, 2007 at 9:06 PM

*accept it, sorry

Christoph on September 14, 2007 at 9:06 PM

She called me a fool and a liar, therefore I said this…

This sounds more like an excuse than an apology.

Yes I said I’d spit on her (which was wrong) BUT she made me do it! She called me names and I had to respond. So therefore, I really wasn’t wrong in what I said and technically that means I’m not really sorry I said it.

CookeyD on September 14, 2007 at 9:06 PM

Good enough, forgive and forget. We aren’t going to be like the leftards who try to “see through the lines” into whatever new conspiracy our “enlightened superiors” have thought up.

BKennedy on September 14, 2007 at 9:06 PM

Ok, he apologized. Now he needs to go to AirAmerica.

Limerick on September 14, 2007 at 9:06 PM

Word of advice for Michelle. Accept the apology and move pash Geraldo. He is a living caricature of the dinosaur media.

You the new media. Ignore the neanderthals.

William Amos on September 14, 2007 at 9:07 PM

Geraldo = loser.

Geraldo did a lot of great — and some quite brave — reporting in his youth.

He’s filled his head with fuzzy-headed ideals and he’s not a balanced man (I don’t mean ill, I mean fair minded). He’s an advocate for the sides he believes in so strongly (strongly biased in favour of Hispanics, for example) and this causes him to act foolishly.

I’m not saying he’s a good man. But I don’t think he’s a particularly bad one.

Christoph on September 14, 2007 at 9:08 PM

This sounds more like an excuse than an apology

You nailed it.

wccawa on September 14, 2007 at 9:08 PM

Geraldo = loser

I’m quite happy with my take on him. I have been for many years. He has zero credibility with this lowly, average American.

wccawa on September 14, 2007 at 9:10 PM

It’s good enough for me. Forgive and forget.

Now, if he does it again, especially now that he said he wouldn’t, then we’ll have a problem…

2Brave2Bscared on September 14, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Backhanded. He couldn’t do it without blaming her. He’s pathetic.

Connie on September 14, 2007 at 9:12 PM

Good boy. Here’s a cookie.

ajmontana on September 14, 2007 at 9:13 PM

I’ve shot my mouth off, and I’ve apologized. General Patton utterly blew his cool (repeatedly), and, repeatedly, he apologized. An apology is an apology. You accept it or you don’t, but you move on. I think Geraldo’s a weasel without peer, but he apologized, and he went up a rung in my book. How MM feels about it is her own business, and I will respect her take on matters no matter what they are. But as far as the public is concerned, this matter should be concluded.

thejackal on September 14, 2007 at 9:13 PM

It is about time he apologized. Granted, it was not the best apology I ever heard, but it was an apology. I will let Michelle decide if it was enough. I, not have been on the receiving end, cannot make that decision.

MalkinFan on September 14, 2007 at 9:14 PM

I think Geraldo basically agreed he is a lier “I don’t spit”, so he is really saying he is sorry he lied about being a spitter, rather than “I’m sorry for the hurt I may have caused you by my wickedness”.

I think this was required of him to continue on Fox, rather than truly heart-felt. I can almost assure you he thinks Michelle and us like minded folks on immigration are as good as Nazis.

In any case, it is entirely up to Michelle to accept.

AZCON on September 14, 2007 at 9:15 PM

MM will accept it and move on.

csdeven on September 14, 2007 at 9:15 PM

I saw it live and missed when he said ‘Michelle’, Bill jumped in and over talked him. I think he was pressured, too many e-mails? But I also think it was sincere, time will tell us that.

Time to move on.

allrsn on September 14, 2007 at 9:16 PM

Jerkaldo is wrong on the immigration issue and is an ass .
His track record and actions prove it.
No apology will restore this pos to me.
His word means nothing , and he means nothing.

Mojack420 on September 14, 2007 at 9:17 PM

And another thing, this is at least the second time I’ve heard O’Reilly call Geraldo “macho.” What’s up with that? Try “bravado,” Bill. There’s a big difference between machismo and bravado.

Connie on September 14, 2007 at 9:19 PM

I nearly choked on a Newcastle when he said it. (Thanks for the tip AP. Good stuff.) I hope Michelle didn’t snort any cheap wine through her nose. (Ouch! That burns.) Yeah, forgive and forget. Let’s ‘MoveOn’ to something more important.

RedWinged Blackbird on September 14, 2007 at 9:20 PM

I did not mean to suggest I gained any respect for him. I have never liked him, and turned on him when he drew our soldiers battle plan in the sand for Iraq militry to see.

allrsn on September 14, 2007 at 9:20 PM

I’m sure Michelle will take the high road.
Zorro on September 14, 2007 at 9:03 PM

.
Absolutely she will, in her special way, that’s why I told the truth. He justified his spit speech and to me that is NO apology.
An apology or an amend should be in deepest humility and what you did ONLY, not what anyone else did… no justification, no b.s..just sorry for harm caused by the person responsible.
.
Michelle is an honorable woman, she will accept it and forge ahead knowing she has honor and Geraldo still does not.

shooter on September 14, 2007 at 9:21 PM

HAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!….brilliant, AP.

The Ugly American on September 14, 2007 at 9:22 PM

Wowser.
Mean Mr. Mustache a stand up guy?
Sort of.

I predict the Boss will exhibit her usual grace & aplomb and accept M.M.M.’s apology.

Exit answer question: will herr ubermann simply get a clue and nominate himself?

locomotivebreath1901 on September 14, 2007 at 9:24 PM

Shooter, you’re right. Geraldo is on his way “out”, Michelle is on her way “up”.

Zorro on September 14, 2007 at 9:25 PM

Christoph,

I don’t know how much money Michelle makes at Fox but as far as I am concerned, it isn’t enough.

As far as the apology, we should let MM decide if it was good enough.

BobK on September 14, 2007 at 9:26 PM

Hey…it’s a start, and couldn’t have been very easy no matter how weasely it was.

Let’s give credit where credit’s due and see where he goes from here.

Michelle is a class act … I agree Michelle is on her way up.

tarpon on September 14, 2007 at 9:28 PM

I’m glad to see it. Good for him. I would have no problem accepting that apology if I were her. That apology was owed to her and demended by her blog community.
It’s always nice to see a someone man up and accept responsibility.

I can’t recall when that happened.

He humiliated himself and is trying to cover his ass.

Too late, ’stache.

JammieWearingFool on September 14, 2007 at 9:32 PM

Geral-DOH! apologized AFTER O’Reilly confronted him. Would he have the courage to have done so without O’Reilly’s prompting? Doubtful.
Now I want to see what O’Reilly’s body language expert says.
Geral-DOH! looked about as sincere as a snake to me. Ugh…
Long overdue and not enough. He owes MM some MAJOR sucking up in the next year.
And he should address her as “your highness”.

PoliticallyIncorrectSandy on September 14, 2007 at 9:34 PM

I’m not a spitter..?? its not my style..??? Leaving me to wonder then, well what else is there he would do to HER..??

Legions on September 14, 2007 at 9:35 PM

I seem to recall she got a little fustrated herself and said somthing. I am not sure is was as strong as ‘fool and liar’ though.

Does anyone remember exactly what she said, on the factor I think.

allrsn on September 14, 2007 at 9:36 PM

All bullshit. He probably got alot of guano from FOX and he’s covering his tracks. “MACHO?” BaaaaaaHaaaawwwwww!!!!!!!

LtE126 on September 14, 2007 at 9:37 PM

He felt the heat huh? Well….he has had plenty of time to think it over now. He decided to say he was wrong. Michelle is a VERY forgiving and kind person. I won’t judge whether it was genuine or not. The fact he went on National Television and said he was wrong…I would accept it. However, I would much rather have a PERSONAL, face to face, apology. I expect Michelle to forgive though. That is just her. She will…I’m sure.

Jay on September 14, 2007 at 9:37 PM

Three scenarios:

1. He’s sincere, and regrets saying something so hateful and vile.

2. He’s just saving face, because the story is generating bad numbers. Possible pressure from FOX.

3. He’s afraid that Michelle will kick his ass.

Dork B. on September 14, 2007 at 9:38 PM

Approx :30 Bill O’, “Are you really sorry Geraldo?”

Geraldo laughs.

Suck it, Geraldo.

Stephen M on September 14, 2007 at 9:38 PM

I watched this on the Factor…I thought Geraldo was sincere. I appreciated it. I hope that Michelle does as well.
The hate for geraldo in these comments is surprising to me. Like things I read over at the Huffington post…Come on. The man is human. He admitted to being human. Lighten up.

bridgetown on September 14, 2007 at 9:38 PM

I don’t know Bill looked pretty serious when he asked the second time 0:38. Right after discounting the reasons Geraldo made for his actions. And the more I watch it , the more it looks like somebody stepped in it big time .

I think we might see him retire soon .
If this wasn’t the straw that broke camels back, it has put him on the very edge of the plank as it should.

Mojack420 on September 14, 2007 at 9:38 PM

But then again, what ever she said did not come close to a spitting challange. Spitting on people is for children, not matter what prompts it.

allrsn on September 14, 2007 at 9:38 PM

We wanted an apology for Michelle and got one. Thanx Geraldo for doing the right thing and I imagine Michelle will be gracious.

Now maybe we can have a civil discourse!

Ordinary1 on September 14, 2007 at 9:39 PM

An apology from Geraldo “Capone’s Vault” Rivera is worth as much as anything said by Gerald Rivera.

Nada, chico.

MadisonConservative on September 14, 2007 at 9:40 PM

MM is a class act. She doesn’t personally attack even when the person deserves it.

Geral-DOH! needs to go. I suspect FOX was getting TONS of anti-Geral-DOH! mail. I usually turn the channel everytime he’s on unless MM is there. He annoys the cr@p out of me with his pro-criminal alien bs.

PoliticallyIncorrectSandy on September 14, 2007 at 9:43 PM

I think this was required of him to continue on Fox, rather than truly heart-felt.

AZCON on September 14, 2007 at 9:15 PM

Probably true. Additionally, the specter of thousands of guys–with AP leading the pack–ready to go the pistols-at-dawn route (colloquially speaking–maybe) should any Rivera-saliva manage to make contact with our Hostess probably influenced this offering as well.

In any case, it is entirely up to Michelle to accept.

Agreed.

baldilocks on September 14, 2007 at 9:43 PM

I missed this live, since I was no longer watching the Factor on Fridays. Bill still owes an apology to MM, though it need not be public, and to his viewers for allowing the matter to be swept under the rug for two weeks. O’Reilly should not criticize MSNBC, while acting in a manner similar to the targets of his criticism.

As a viewer, I only wanted to see Geraldo confronted with his statement. Whether he apologized or stood by the statement was irrelevant.

rw on September 14, 2007 at 9:43 PM

Now maybe we can have a civil discourse!

We are talking about Geraldo, right?

wccawa on September 14, 2007 at 9:44 PM

*Not some of my best work there. I should probably apologize to everybody for that one. Dork B.

Dork B. on September 14, 2007 at 9:44 PM

It is about time he apologized. Granted, it was not the best apology I ever heard, but it was an apology.

MalkinFan on September 14, 2007 at 9:14 PM

Good summary. I thought it seemed awkward and fully staged, and it looked like O’Reilly orchestrated it. Not to read too much into it, but I almost sense that he told management “this guy can’t continue on my show without an apology”.

Anyone else see that? It was like a Dad taking his (stupid) son back to 7-11 to return the gum he stole.

I must have sent 5 emails to Fox and O’Reilly, asking them how anyone could take them seriously after this unprofessional and wimpy incident, without an on-air apology.

But…now it’s done. I can watch the Factor again.

Jaibones on September 14, 2007 at 9:48 PM

He apologized on national t.v. and owned up to it. Some people would only be happy…well, I don’t know what would make them happy. Yes, he’s an extraordinary jackass, but at least he fessed up.

Bill still owes an apology to MM, though it need not be public, and to his viewers for allowing the matter to be swept under the rug for two weeks.

:::shrug::: I’m thinking that Bill tried to handle it behind the scenes, due to the legal issues involved (since they all work for FNC). Whether that was the way to go or not is up to those in the know to judge.

baldilocks on September 14, 2007 at 9:57 PM

I liked the slightly cynical look on Bill’s face when he asked “are you really sorry?”

baldilocks on September 14, 2007 at 9:59 PM

Its real easy to stay pissed off at Geraldo, he is so full of venom on illegal immagration. I think we was genuinely sorry; weather or not it was because he was taking so much heat or because he felt bad he hurt Michelle’s feelings is something I guess we’ll just have to give him the benefit of the doubt on.

I wonder; his face time on Fox was reduced after his spit statements right? Other then his show I hadn’t seen any guest apearances by him…..

liquidflorian on September 14, 2007 at 10:01 PM

No good unless he already personally apologized to Michelle.

baldilocks on September 14, 2007 at 9:57 PM

I expect that that was very much the case, however FNC should hold itself to the same standards to which it does others. O’Reilly would have sent his producer out to stalk someone that tried to remain silent and avoid comment for half that amount of time. There did not need to be an apology or resolution to issue, just acknowledgement. It should have been handled at the very least the same as when O’Reilly was sued. Acknowledge the issue and then state that due to legal reasons, there can be no further discussion until the matter is resolved.

rw on September 14, 2007 at 10:12 PM

It seemd pretty genuine to me. Whether his motivation was a series of discussions with Fox News executives or his conscious nawing at him, the apology did come from an acknowledgement of the possible reprucussions. And honestly I think regrets it. Heartfelt contrition for insulting a colleague? Remorse for degrading his own profession? Who knows. I do know that was not a scripted apology, you can see in his eyes he believes what he is saying.

He still has not acknowledged his several mistakes in reporting though. That I would really like to hear.

People can disagree. Doesn’t mean they need to be disagreeable! Hopefully the immigration debate will be elevated. Name calling doesn’t help anyone win an argument and it certainly isn’t a very good way to persuade people to your point of view. I know it’s best case scenario, but I can dream! and hopefully do my part.

I thought the same thing.

Geraldo, it is amazing what a few bucks will do. I am sure his numbers have gone down, and his place at Fox is not secure.

I have posted this before (in reference to his macho statement): My nephew was in Iraq, in the same place as Geraldo when Geraldo was reporting. He was the laughing stock of the whole camp. The way he behaved and carried on was embarrassing. I am sure the word “macho” never crossed any ones lips when talking about Geraldo. Unless the Iraqi translation of “macho” means fool. Weeks after he left, the men were still imitating him.
What a pathetic, mean, lonely man.

allrsn on September 14, 2007 at 10:31 PM

Did you really call him a fool Michelle? That’s the first I’ve hear of that. Calling him a liar, he should be able to take that in stride. But you should never call someone a fool, even if they are. If you called him a fool you owe him an apology as well and you should do it. I know its not like to said it to a national paper like he did, but you would still owe him an apology. Matthew 5:22

OK he apologized, seemed marginally sincere, I would accept it and try to forgive it and forget about it. Especially in light of the fact you got to work with the guy.

Maxx on September 14, 2007 at 10:32 PM

To be very frank I think **this is the reason why Geraldo waited this long to apologize.

This is a true story of what happened as recorded by a HotAir commentator here**:

OT, but I thought you guys would like to hear some good news…

Just returned from Hannity’s Freedom Concert and wanted to let everyone know that Geraldo Rivera showed up, spent perhaps 30 seconds on stage, and he was booed. He was the only person who was booed the entire night. The best part: someone nearby shouted out: “Who you gonna spit at?” Geraldo heard it but ignored it. The booing stopped as soon as Geraldo said something about our wonderful troops.

God Bless America. Land of the free because of the brave.

IrishEi on September 11, 2007 at 11:59 PM

Now let’s ponder this for a moment….

Where oh where I ask, was this incident widely reported?

Answer: only on HotAir.

Does this hit anybody like it does me?

10,000 people at Sean Hannity’s Freedom concert, and they boo.

It works better than we could’ve hope for at this early stage.

Exit statement: Geraldo was absolutely shocked out of his mind that he is exposed for the “attention bilge pump” that he is.
And for that he is truly sorry.

Exit question: Do you think that now, more elitist media types will respect the power of bloggers?

Mcguyver on September 14, 2007 at 10:32 PM

Geraldo was BOOED lustily at the Hannity Freedom Concert on 9/11.

Personally, I was upset that Hannity even invited him.

The booing would have been worse if not for Ollie North, who told the audience to stop.

Otherwise, the boos would have rained down on Geraldo’s big ego for quite a while.
The boos are the reason he apologized.

(and it was a weak apology – he kept trying to justify it, “she called me a liar”…. very pathetic)

flagwaver on September 14, 2007 at 10:33 PM

… I almost sense that he told management “this guy can’t continue on my show without an apology”.

Anyone else see that? It was like a Dad taking his (stupid) son back to 7-11 to return the gum he stole.

Jaibones on September 14, 2007 at 9:45 PM

Yeah. I think Bill driving the discussion and Geraldo’s “I don’t spit”, “I’m not a spitter” responses were clues in that direction.

I think Geraldo basically agreed he is a lier “I don’t spit”, so he is really saying he is sorry he lied about being a spitter, rather than “I’m sorry for the hurt I may have caused you by my wickedness”.

I think this was required of him to continue on Fox, rather than truly heart-felt…

AZCON on September 14, 2007 at 9:15 PM

Yeah… at least I could tell that Geraldo knew it was wrong, what he’d said/threatened. That’s a start, even if he still feels personally justified in making a threat to begin with.

I think part of his “I’m not a spitter, I don’t spit” shtick (which I noticed he was desperate to voice despite Bill’s attempts to talk over him) was his attempt to imply that Michelle was never in any real danger from the beginning, that not only had his comment been an empty threat, but that it *had* to have been an empty threat because he is not One Who Spits, he is Not A Spitter (just like Richard Nixon), even when the other guy/gal deserves it.

In fact, once we bite, he might even be able to slide a little umbrage into the picture – umbrage at the fact that we could’ve ever suspected him of this, or taken him seriously! Hm. (Botched joke?)

I imagine it’s classic avoidance behavior: he feels responsible for the period of time during which his threat was active (which he should), feels guilty about it (which he should), and wants to duck the responsibility for it (which he shouldn’t) – so instead of accepting fully what he’s done, he constructs the mental alibi that he couldn’t have done the crime (”even if I wanted to”) because he’s not a spitter.

A real apology wouldn’t have been weakened his absurd propositions that he is incapable of spitting, or that people are divided into two groups, “spitters” and “non-spitters”.

As said on the previous thread: don’t spit a spitter, Gerry.

RD on September 14, 2007 at 10:35 PM

Mcguyver, flagwaver, allrsn: I bet this delusional twerp felt like he had the moral upper hand, until he the crowds threw his own ugliness back in his face. Accountability’s a b-tch…

It may actually have dawned on him then that what he did was wrong. But something still tells me he feels personally entitled to feel the way he did.

RD on September 14, 2007 at 10:42 PM

I liked the slightly cynical look on Bill’s face when he asked “are you really sorry?”

baldilocks on September 14, 2007 at 9:59 PM

:-D He had to ask that, didn’t he – just when they were getting the flying pig off the ground, Bill had to poke a hole in it…

I missed it (but don’t think it was a lost cause), because like most, I change channels when Geraldo comes on ANY Fox show, no matter what it is. And I understand that many others do likewise. I can’t stand to listen to that buffoon, and really don’t know why Fox has him on at all.

hamdude on September 14, 2007 at 10:46 PM

The booing would have been worse if not for Ollie North, who told the audience to stop.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww…….Cry me some big marine tears, Ollie!!

My browser isn’t displaying or playing embedded YouTube video, though I can view/play at YouTube itself. Anybody care to post the link?

Geraldo apologizes to Michelle on the Factor,
Somebody has already posted it

I suggest Fox news do what a local sports commentator recomended as punishment for Bill Belicheck for spying.

He said if you really want to punish Belicheck then force him to become head coach of the Cleveland Browns. That would show him !

So I suggest Fox do the same. Send Geraldo to cohost with Keith Olbermann. Just having those two massive egos on the same show will cause gravity to turn in on itself ad create a massive black hole of suck that no light, ratings, spit or rational coherent thought can escape from.

This will cause their ego driven universes to implode in on itself saving humanity !

Again I suggest to michelle again. You take the high road and we’ll take the low road and we’ll kick his ass for ye…

Here’s the deal – if this country is going to change, for the better, we had better start accepting apologies at face value. All this whizzing and moaning about “He’s not sincere enough” is for the grade-school playground. It’s time to be men about these things…

Whatever you say Doctor.

Fox News seems to be digging its grave only slightly less quickly than the rest of the MSM. Keep Geraldo around and I’ll just keep ignoring that channel. i don’t need the aggravation.

PRCalDude on September 14, 2007 at 11:09 PM

Did you really call him a fool Michelle? That’s the first I’ve hear of that. Calling him a liar, he should be able to take that in stride.

Maxx on September 14, 2007 at 10:32 PM

That is the problem I have with the apology.

Michelle will tear anyone a new one on points and facts, she have never resorted to name calling that I am aware of.

That is a Geraldo tactic

Remember this is not the first time Geraldo has insulted Michelle.

She called that one kid a loser on TV without provocation. (Other than her view of his profession, and possible things previous that were unseen)

I’m not disputing that….

I can only dream how long the booing would’ve gone on without intervention, can’t I?

Justice is sweet and in this case not long enough.
