Video: Freedom’s Watch rips MoveOn for Petraeus ad

Is anyone seeing these Freedom’s Watch ads on TV? I’ve caught one or two on Fox but they haven’t had the presence I expected from such a large ad buy.

This one’s overwrought although I can’t decide if that’s due to the dramatic text effects, the schmaltzy music cues, or the fact that they’re using the guy who narrates “Forensic Files” for the voiceover. His voice is the instrument on which melodrama plays, my friends. A separate question is why they’re spending ad dollars to attack another PAC. Given how much press the “Betray Us” ad got, I guess it’s understandable.

Here’s MoveOn’s follow up to the Petraeus debacle. Clever in its simplicity.

Loosers want to loose, it’s that simple.

Well, as long as Moveon.org attacks Bush, I have no problem. He’s not running for President, last I heard.

I didn’t care for the voiceover guy in the first ad. He sounds like he’s on the verge of tears.

Tennman on September 14, 2007 at 11:02 AM

There’s that inevitable ” stuck in Iraq” line….Was John Kerry signed on as a consultant for MoveOn?

JetBoy on September 14, 2007 at 11:04 AM

Don’t agree MoveOn’s ad is clever in its simplicity. Even if you accept the argument that the ‘06 Congressional election was about bring home the troops (which I don’t), Bush didn’t promise to do so. So I see no betrayal. Just trying to use the word betrayal and see if it sticks to anyone.

Failed ad.

JiangxiDad on September 14, 2007 at 11:06 AM

why is that group giving moveon the attention it desperately desires. everytime you mention moveon.org you give out their website - all you remember from the first ad is moveon.org . That’s the worst type of ad.

lorien1973 on September 14, 2007 at 11:07 AM

Perhaps MOveON was referring to Nancy and Harry. There’s your betrayal. LOSERS

JiangxiDad on September 14, 2007 at 11:07 AM

JiangxiDad on September 14, 2007 at 11:06 AM

Congress promised; so isn’t it really congress’ betrayal of trust?

lorien1973 on September 14, 2007 at 11:08 AM

“Stuck in Iraq” At least they didn’t say quagmire.

I’m still confused. Are the libs upset and want troops withdrawn now because “war is bad” in general, they are upset by American deaths, or this is “George Bush’s war?” I suspect it is all of them.

The latest meme is the failure of the political process in Iraq is the reason why we should leave. It must get tiresome for the libs to have to keep moving the goalposts all the time.

Mallard T. Drake on September 14, 2007 at 11:09 AM

What? Betrayal of trust? Bush was up for election in 2006?

Yeah, that’s real “clever.”

If you’re an idiot, that is.

Misha I on September 14, 2007 at 11:10 AM

Move on lies again, the Dem did not win on ending the war they won by running conservative dems against moderate repubs and the culture of corruption

Gwillie on September 14, 2007 at 11:12 AM

Oh yeah:

Here’s MoveOn’s follow up…Clever in its simplicity.

Simple things for simple minds.

JetBoy on September 14, 2007 at 11:12 AM

For one fleeting instance the newly elected congress is blamed, but then it quickly reverts back to Booooossshh.

I like the repeated “stuck in Iraq” word usage. Did Kerry help with the making of this beauty?

mojowire on September 14, 2007 at 11:13 AM

Man those Moveon guys are sneaky. In that ad they name two players Bush and the “new congress.” They say that before the surge there were 130,000 troops in Iraq. Then the ad said that America elected a new congress to bring the troops home. The focus then shifts back to Bush and his increase of 30,000 troops. At the end it then blames Bush for the betrayal. What happened to the “new congress?” Their own ad states that they were elected to bring the troops home. Is that not a failure and betrayal of that shiny “new congress”, rather than a betrayal by Chimpy McBushitler. But they can’t say that can they. For if they did, it would beg the question, “well why didn’t congress bring the troops home?” And the answer wouldn’t fit the ad. I’ll leave it to the smart people on this wonderful blog to come to the conclusion of that little puzzle. So the add blames Bush for breaking a promise that the Dems in congress made to their base…how convenient

Is anyone seeing these Freedom’s Watch ads on TV?

Actually, I’ve seen them several times.

amerpundit on September 14, 2007 at 11:22 AM

JetBoy on September 14, 2007 at 11:12 AM

oh like the freedom vets arent going for the same simple minds. all these 12 second ad buys by these groups are starting to get on my nerves. for the record, the moveon ad WAS clever in its simplicity.

learn from them. its like apple man, packaging is everything. freedom vets could learn from moveon’s ads. the freedom vet ad was just too melodramatic.

ernesto on September 14, 2007 at 11:23 AM

or the fact that they’re using the guy who narrates “Forensic Files” for the voiceover.

He sounds kind of like a lazy version of the SuperFriends announcer to me.

BadgerHawk on September 14, 2007 at 11:25 AM

Is anyone seeing these Freedom’s Watch ads on TV?

I saw the original ads a few times - the ones with the soldiers’ parents and stuff. On Fox or maybe TNT I forget.

lorien1973 on September 14, 2007 at 11:26 AM

I also fail to see the “clever” aspect of the MoveOn follow-up. Maybe if the final screen had said “Pelosi Betrayed Our Trust” it might make sense. Otherwise, it seems nonsensical.

Clark1 on September 14, 2007 at 11:26 AM

Sorry…I liked the ad. And the announcer (I’ve watched tons of Forensic Files) was just fine.

tickleddragon on September 14, 2007 at 11:44 AM

ernesto on September 14, 2007 at 11:23 AM

Since when is American security “melodramatic”? I assume you’re for an Iraq pullout ASAP, but if history teaches us anything, it’s that cut-and-run is the worst possible scenario.

JetBoy on September 14, 2007 at 11:51 AM

Freedom Watch ads are bad.

Rudy’s NYT ad was self serving therefor bad.

Moveon Ad is clever.

Really throwing me for a loop the past two days AP.

sunny on September 14, 2007 at 11:53 AM

I liked the first one. The second one wasn’t clever. Unless you are not clever enough to see how they fail to blame Congress for what Congress failed to deliver. There was no “betrayal” on the part of the President.

I agree with JiangxiDad. Betrayal is a powerful word and they are determined to use it on someone.

Guardian on September 14, 2007 at 11:55 AM

Freedom Watch ads are bad.

Sorry should read: “Freedom Watch ad is bad.”

You were only commenting on this ad.

sunny on September 14, 2007 at 11:56 AM

I love to see all the left wieiners spend their monies running against Bush and or the War. It is like they have no clue what is happening from today until Nov 2008. Let them piss their money sway.

Wade on September 14, 2007 at 11:59 AM

lorien1973 on September 14, 2007 at 11:07 AM

Yeah thats the first thing that came to mind when I saw the ad. It probably would be far more effective (far less distructive) to just state that liberal democrats bought a full page ad in the NYTimes just to smear the general leading our troops in battle. Nobody could deny that Moooveon.org is entirely made up of liberals. Some might split hairs and state the fact that there are moooooveon members affiliated with the Communist party and not the democrat party but to me that is a distinction without a difference.

Zetterson on September 14, 2007 at 12:00 PM

Let me see if I have this straight. Moron.org is critical of Bush’s math after they unendingly defended a guy who called tax increases “investments” and decreases in rates of spending increases “cuts”?

Hypocritical liberals.

But I repeat myself.

drjohn on September 14, 2007 at 12:13 PM

Moveon is doing a good job of pulling the strings on their puppet political apparatus — the Party of the Democrats. The Democrats are in so much fear of Moveon that they dare not question them or defy them. It is very dangerous when a legitimate political entity loses control and becomes a tool for a radical leftist organization. Unfortunately, that is precisely what has occurred.

rplat on September 14, 2007 at 12:17 PM

I think each organization knows its audience and produces their ads accordingly.
Cleverness in advertising is usually a distraction.
The Freedom Watch ads are emotionally effective. Your mileage may vary ;)

I’ve seen these Freedom Watch ads but they are kinda hokey. What bothers me most about the new one is when they talk about “name calling”. That’s pretty weak and sounds whiny.

And who are the people they show on the map? It goes by so fast I don’t have a clue what that is all about.

I think they need to mention that every Senator approved Petreaus’ nomination and he told them exactly what he planned to do, and he kept his word and did what he said he would do. How can that be a betrayal?

Weren’t they “doing Bush’s bidding” when they voted for Petreaus?

So the add blames Bush for breaking a promise that the Dems in congress made to their base…how convenient
Weight of Glory on September 14, 2007 at 11:22 AM

Exactly. It really is Orwellian.

Buy Danish on September 14, 2007 at 12:46 PM

I’m not crazy about the Freedom Watch ads. The VO bothers me and they have a bit of a “victim” tone. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they’re out there swinging the bat. The first batch just wasn’t a hit for me.

We need some spots with a bit of an @$$kicking tone. Or maybe individual stories of heroism…

“In July of 2007 Marine Sgt. Joe Smith singlehandedly rescued three of his platoon mates who were pinned down by enemy fire. After seeing them to safety, Sgt. Smith rallied his troops, outflanked the enemy and took out an entrenched position, killing twelve al Qaeda fighters”

Cut to hero shot of Sgt. Smith…

Sgt. Smith: I’m Joe Smith. Don’t let the democrats hold us back. We’re winning.

MikeZero on September 14, 2007 at 12:52 PM

Moveon’s ad is neither clever nor truthful.

Nothing they do has anything to do with the truth as they are simply leftist propaganda artists.

The ad attacking moveon.org will not get much play on the leftist MSM, unfortuantely.

georgej on September 14, 2007 at 12:58 PM

Funny the add mentions the DEMOCRAT congress that was elected to bring the troops home..

Is it me or isn’t the add saying the DEMOCRATS betrayed America??

186k on September 14, 2007 at 1:01 PM

And I guess bringing home 30,000 troops is no “big deal” to moveon.

186k on September 14, 2007 at 1:04 PM

Mike this idea is awesome!

Do you mind if I forward this idea to them?

Yeah!

Someone needs to use their amazing photoshop skills and write in Democratic congress over Bush.

Bill C on September 14, 2007 at 1:46 PM

This new ad only adds to my anger at the Dumbs.

Just as with the campaign D.A.R.E. had against drugs, if the Dumbs don’t comdemn them (moveone.org), they support them.

ArmyAunt on September 14, 2007 at 1:35 PM

Be my guest.

Sorry for the belated response I was out doing work Americans won’t do mowing my lawn.

MikeZero on September 14, 2007 at 2:43 PM

Clever in its simplicity. Simplicity for the simple.

I haven’t seen these adds on TV, but I’ve heard something similar on the radio.

Kini on September 14, 2007 at 3:29 PM

MikeZero,

That was a great idea for a powerful spot! Well done!

But active duty Troops, sadly, aren’t supposed to get involved with political messages. More’s the pity.

But! You could have someone else do the voiceover praising him and saying essentially the same thing… hmmmm… like say a candidate for POTUS?

techno_barbarian on September 14, 2007 at 3:44 PM

You’re right, techno. I’d forgotten about that.

I like your idea of using a candidate. Or possibly a vet with a message of, “I came home because I had to. Don’t pull my brothers and sisters in arms out while we’re taking it to the enemy. Victory is within our reach.”

MikeZero on September 14, 2007 at 4:05 PM

…blah blah blah troops “stuck” in Iraq???

Why not just call ‘em moral retards and be done with it.

The Ugly American on September 14, 2007 at 4:26 PM

Last I looked, Freedom’s Watch was about the only one on our side directly engaging MoveOn. Sure, the ad could use some polish, but at least it’s a step in the right direction.
