Resistance is futile: Media’s love affair with O.J. rekindled; Update: “If this happened in L.A. you’d be dead already”

And so a week that began with stories about how 9/11 is receding ends with the perfect illustration. Acquaint yourself with the facts now; if he’s charged there shall be no refuge from the storm, especially on Fox.

Short and sweet: some of his memorabilia was being shopped last night in a Vegas hotel room when the Juice and a few “pals” came knocking. O.J. claims the goods had been stolen from him and that he was simply trying to take back what’s his. Problem is, he may have tried to do it “O.J. style”:

Alfred Beardsley, a sports memorabilia collector, says Simpson and his posse pretended to be customers who wanted to buy the suit Simpson wore when he was acquitted.

Beardsley says they entered the room and two men drew guns. He said Simpson was calling the shots during the alleged robbery.

Another witness who was there says he saw guns drawn, too. The Juice’s excuse? He was merely conducting a little freelance sting operation, presumably during his downtime while looking for “the real killers”:

“Everybody knows this is stolen stuff,” Simpson said. “Not only wasn’t there a break-in, but Riccio came to the lobby and escorted us up to the room. In any event, it’s stolen stuff that’s mine. Nobody was roughed up.”

Beardsley says “the group stole every piece of memorabilia in the room, including items signed by Joe Montana. They also took a case of never-released leather editions of Simpson’s book, ‘I Want to Tell You.’” The police mentioned photographic evidence at their presser a little while ago but that surely only refers to images of the men passing through the casino on their way to the hotel room.

His book’s out today, by the way. Go take a look at the jacket cover. What a country.

Update: Drudge has a fee-vah and the only pre— ah, forget it.

KFI’s John Ziegler quotes alleged victim, Alfred Beardsley: “O.J. told me, ‘If this happened in L.A. you’d be dead already’”… MORE… “They were black goons, a bunch of gang-bangers. Two of them had guns drawn. They took a bunch of game balls, awards that he had won. Over 200 signed photos. And by accident he took a bunch of Joe Montana memorabilia.” Developing…

Update: Say this much for O.J.: he sure is a convincing witness.

Simpson, who was in Las Vegas for a friend’s wedding, said he arranged to meet Riccio at the hotel. Riccio had set up a meeting with collectors under the guise that he had a private collector interested in buying Simpson’s items…

Simpson said he was accompanied by several men he met at a wedding cocktail party, and they took the collectibles.

OJ said to the arresting officer:

Please, I got away with murder. You got nothin’ on me.

lorien1973 on September 14, 2007 at 4:08 PM

This is messed up. He probably was recovering his property. But then stole other people’s property. And with guns drawn.

I say use this as an excuse to give him the needle and let justice be done.

Oh, I didn’t know O.J. was starring in another Naked Gun movie…

I …. I love you, too, Nordberg …

Professor Blather on September 14, 2007 at 4:17 PM

I’m sure he didn’t legally own the property anymore. Why am I giving O.J. the benefit of the doubt?

Christoph on September 14, 2007 at 4:19 PM

Det. Nordberg: Drugs… drugs…
Frank: Nurse! get this man some drugs!
[nurse administers drugs]
Det. Nordberg: No… no…
[pulls Frank towards him]
Det. Nordberg: Heroin. Heroin, Frank.
Frank: Uh… that’s a pretty tall order, it’ll take a couple of days for that one.

(has nothing to do with this but it makes me giggle.)

Small taters takes him down in the end.
Shoulda made friends with Hsu…..

This so much better for the media. The whole 9/11, war and General Petraeus stuff is hard. Hard like math and they can’t handle it.

This? This stuff is right in their wheelhouse.

I question the timing. What is the release date of the “If I did it” book?

Wade on September 14, 2007 at 4:35 PM

some of his memorabilia

Allahpundit, can you clarify this statement?

I know you meant stuff that he had signed, owned at one point, etc., but the dealer is very clear in saying he had ownership over these goods.

He is getting no money from the book sales, Goldman is getting everything (through court order). He (Goldman)changed the title (sub title) and added “confesssion of the killer”.

right2bright on September 14, 2007 at 4:44 PM

Mark Fuhrman, call your make-up person.

fogw on September 14, 2007 at 4:46 PM

Let someone get away with murder once and they think they can get away with anything. Who’d have thought it!

NoSquids on September 14, 2007 at 4:47 PM

Anyone acquanted with the legal phrase “Honest Claim of Right”?

It wouldn’t cover taking items that he didn’t honestly believe belonged to him, but as long as that was unintentional and he willingly returns it, I would question whether there is any criminal liability here.

(although if they were really using guns, that might entail some kind of liability)

It does point out a rather massive character flaw though, doesn’t it?

Fatal on September 14, 2007 at 4:49 PM

Well heck we might as well dig out Cartman and Kenny headed for the border.

Now what right headed person would do this…in any way. If the fella in the hotel room has stolen my things then I call the cops and get a lawyer to back it up with a lawsuit.
But OJ decides to play Sonny Corleone. Book him into the Las Vegas jail and forget about him.

In the general population. He can show how tough he is.

Christoph on September 14, 2007 at 4:57 PM

I think what we’re not giving enough weight to is he could be being framed.

Christoph on September 14, 2007 at 5:16 PM

If that suit fits, you must acquit….

d1carter on September 14, 2007 at 5:32 PM

I don’t see anything coming from this. While it would be nice to see him get some sort of justice served for his crimes, I can’t Imagine him getting a day in jail for this.

Scorched_Earth on September 14, 2007 at 5:36 PM

“don’t squeeze the juice, let the juice loose”

I was hauling stone uphill by wheelbarrow all morning (and repeating this line to myself) the day O.J. was baptized in the healing blood of white lynchin’ retro guilt and set free. My disappointment and loss of respect for lawyers and the judiciary doubled negatively from an already low status.

But it was the perfect rock hauling mantra.

I really don’t see what the big deal is…I actually think OJ might be telling the truth in this case. I just can’t imagine him going there with a gun…doesn’t make sense.

Chudi on September 14, 2007 at 5:58 PM

No way. A sociopath with a temper, a superiority complex, who murdered his estranged wife and another man and then wrote a book essentially confessing to it after his acquittal… the last person you’d expect.

I don’t see anything coming from this. While it would be nice to see him get some sort of justice served for his crimes, I can’t Imagine him getting a day in jail for this.

Scorched_Earth on September 14, 2007 at 5:36 PM

Did you listen to the police captain at the first press conference? Not only did he promise a “biased” investigation (just a slip of the tongue, but he said it very firmly… and it was funny how he said competent and biased in the same sentence… I was like, “Yeah! Nail him,)… he was SO obviously nervous. You could hear it in his voice.

He’s picturing his entire career and reputation disappearing if he gets this wrong. He doesn’t want to mishandle this.

Christoph on September 14, 2007 at 6:29 PM

Wow, that is some jacket cover. OJ must be real strapped for cash to have to go for that.

BadgerHawk on September 14, 2007 at 6:32 PM

My girlfriend just informed me that OJ lost the book rights in the court settlement, so he won’t see a penny from this book.

But then again she’s not the most reliable source. (heh I hope she doesn’t read this)

BadgerHawk on September 14, 2007 at 6:32 PM

The book rights were taken from O.J. by the courts. The Goldman’s pushed for publication of this book. Fred Goldman will have signed off on the book cover.

I’m thinking it shouldn’t have been published. What do you think?

Christoph on September 14, 2007 at 6:36 PM

Tell your girlfriend she’s a bright chickie.

I thought a primitive, hateful, racist jury set him free. Which was then followed up with polls showing 90% plus of similar ilk thought him truly not guilty…

JWS on September 14, 2007 at 8:00 PM

KFI’s John & Ken were talking about the owner and O.J. having made a deal, today, whereby they will join their story, have O.J. make an appearance to explain that it wasn’t robbery, have the owner go along, bla, bla, bla…and the world keeps on spinning as if nothing happened.

Sales of the memorabilia will go up.

Entelechy on September 14, 2007 at 8:31 PM

Notice the barely legible “if” and read the name at the bottom of the cover.

OJ has salable property (the memorabilia)? I’m sure that revelation peaked the interest of the Brown and Goldman families.

baldilocks on September 14, 2007 at 8:43 PM

At this point it seems like a fair question to ask: who’s going to pop this guy first?

Jaibones on September 14, 2007 at 10:12 PM

What would be the reasoning for killing OJ? Is he the only killer walking around free? Is vigilante justice acceptable? If so, what makes this case so special? Why not avenge all victims of violent crime?

***randumb***
Has anybody seen the movie The Klansman? Highlights from the film include OJ dressed in a KKK hood, dodging a moving train, and holding 2 people hostage while riding in the back of a Ford Bronco.

If da OJ killed yo daughta, what would you do? I KNOW what i’d be doin’….

JWS on September 14, 2007 at 11:49 PM

I have lost family to violence… murder. The pain is unspeakable and the negative impact on my life can not be quantified. But despite your own bravado and my own anger, revenge is not always an option.

I certainly will not judge how another family handles their own personal tragedy. I am not questioning Fred Goldman, Kim Goldman nor anyone in the Brown family. They are the living victims of this crime. I will probably buy the book, just to contribute to the Goldman’s royalties.

None of that changes my line of questioning. What stake do you have in this story? What about it makes you so willing to invoke murderous revenge? There’s a lot worth dying for. But are you really suggesting that somebody sacrifice their own freedom in order to kill OJ Simpson? What a waste that would be.

If da OJ killed yo daughta, …

That is very original. Do you leave your hood on when performing?
