Video: Graham grills Petraeus on the consequences of withdrawal

Thanks for this to commenter “Drew,” who suggested it as the counterpoint to Warner’s much-hyped exchange with Petraeus about whether the war is making America safer. Graham considers the flip side: will ending the war make America safer? The answer to that comes in the last two minutes. It’s preceded by a memorable exchange in which Graham answers Warner’s concerns about whether Petraeus thinks the war is worth prosecuting by teasing out, a la direct examination of a witness, the projected cost in blood and treasure — including to Petraeus’s own family — of implementing his recommendations. He is, quite literally, deadly serious.
The other side’s pretty serious too, though.

I watch little TV, and this is the first I’ve seen of Petraeus.
I’m impressed.

When Woolsey suggests antiwar activists go after Democrats, does she mean like the moonbat did in the Netherlands?
Hmm.
Just saw Graham with Lowry & Skeletor and was impressed. Washed a bit of the sour taste from the Grahamnesty days out of my mouth.

He fights for that in which he believes. Wish he believed that domestic security was as important as foreign battle zones…
Jaibones on September 11, 2007 at 9:36 PM
Graham nailed it. Shamnesty or no he gets a pat on the back on this one.

Does anyone believe that this ‘hearing’ will cause Congresses approval ratings to climb? [/sarc]
Republicans will have only themselves to blame if they don’t win next years elections. It isn’t as if the Democrats haven’t been doing everything they can to ensure that they lose historically yet again. .
DannoJyd on September 11, 2007 at 9:46 PM
I like Petraeus, very thoughtful answers. Absolutely no attempt to evade questions or to pretend he knows answers that he doesn’t.
Maxx on September 11, 2007 at 9:50 PM
Congress earned it’s low approval ratings the last two days. Gen. Patraeus and Ambassador Crocker have shown where the best men are.

My opinion of Graham went up a notch tonight when he told Colmes that the moveon.org people who placed the ad in the NYT should burn in hell.

Graham doctrine:
1) All roads start in Iraq.
2) All roads end in Iraq.
3) The Sun revolves around Iraq.
4) The moon revolves around Iraq.
5) The stars revolve around Iraq.
6) If the United States does not keep sufficient troop mass in Iraq, the orbital stability of the Earth will become unbalanced and all Muslim terrorists will slide into America.

Not verified by me, this just went up on FR.

Hell might be a bit severe, but a very good spanking would be very much in order.

Lowry was excellent on H&C tonight!
Connie on September 11, 2007 at 10:04 PM
Very true you can see the integrity in his answers. Unlike some of our elected officials sad to say.
F15Mech on September 11, 2007 at 10:16 PM
The patience and restraint of this General is more than I could muster. Just one more example of a real man having to report and give an account to fools, criminals, and idiots. I would love to see the General just go ahead and submit his resignation in the middle of the hearings,, then just tell them clearly the way things are, and not have to worry about that “military respect” thing, getting in the way. “Well Senator,, in answer to your stupid question, the way I see it,, you are just a treasonist terrorist loving thumb sucking brainless twit, who somehow manage to convince a majority of people in an election that you cared more than the other brainless treasonist thumb sucking twit that was running against you,,,, you probably spend more time looking in mirrors and through cracks in toilet stalls than you do at bills that come out of your own office!! Your opinions, when coherent, would be laughable if they were not so dangerous and most certainly, at an earlier time in our history, would have earned you at least a good lashing in the public square if not something more severe! So,, lets just dispense with all these useless questions,, step down here if you are sober enough ,,and we can settle this right now, man to man!”
JellyToast on September 11, 2007 at 10:22 PM
Absolutely. I didn’t know much about the General prior to this hearing (actually I still don’t) but from what I’ve seen thus far I’m very impressed with him and thankful for his service.
Yakko77 on September 11, 2007 at 10:22 PM
Stay on topic, please. This is not an open thread.
Allahpundit on September 11, 2007 at 10:30 PM
I think we owe a debt of gratitude to MoveOn.org. Their repugnant ad has backfired on them. Not that they’d ever admit it, or for that matter, realize their blunder.
They brought more attention to the General, and put him in the spotlight where he sparkled like a boot grunt’s spit-shine.

Sorry my bad
F15Mech on September 11, 2007 at 10:41 PM
Why does it have to be that Graham and McCain are soooo good when it comes to answering and asking questions about Iraq but are soooo bad on illegal immigration? If I were in SC I wouldn’t know how to vote.
I also hate the fact that Petraeus’s answer about his son will be buried and the answer about not knowing how it effects national security will be exalted.

By the time I had scrolled down to this point I knew that was you posting it.
I was also very impressed by the General. I don’t have cable, and all I’ve seen of him out of print has been these clips. Integrity and honesty. As for the Absolute Moral Authority, the General’s son heading across the pond soon is about as good as it gets.

technically, many of his questions were leading which would not be permissible on direct examination
tommylotto on September 11, 2007 at 11:07 PM
Graham may have been wrong about immigration but damn he is great on this.
KBird on September 11, 2007 at 11:25 PM
LOL
I hear you
That would be an exchange I would pay to see on PPV.
Thankfully Petraeus is testifying and not me.

Oh that is FUUUUUNNY. hahahahaha

Lindsey Graham! I guess he does want to be reelected.
“Hey guys amnesty I do not know what I was thinking… my bad.”
He seems to be making up for it. It’ll take a stronger challenger to unseat him in a primary.
Theworldisnotenough on September 12, 2007 at 12:00 AM
When I think I am comfortable in my disgust with Graham, he pulls this brilliant bit of common sense out of his a$$.
God bless general Patraeus and his fellow warriors who man the walls that protect us all!
csdeven on September 12, 2007 at 12:04 AM
Graham did a major a$$ kicking on the crypt keeper on H&C tonight. He shut colmsy up so fast it was like someone shoved a sock in his mouth mid lie!
csdeven on September 12, 2007 at 12:07 AM
HAHA!! He said that!
Allahpundit, this humble poster requests a clip?

Full Hanity and Colmes with Lin

Do’t worry about it. AP was probably referring to my post about Cynthia McKinney. Funny thing is that his post stopped most posts. Why? Because (I don’t know about anyone else) but I watched the Petraeus hearings nonstop both days. I have no idea who else did. But having done so, I needed to have some fun or a stupid diversion. Whatever.

The general shows why congress is held in such disdain. Direct, truthful, as opposed to evasive, and liars.
Who do you think the public responds to: Military intellect, or Political intellect (oxymoron).
This is why the presidential elections are so draining, we hear (from all candidates) babble, and then we listen to this general and we get straight answers.
As good as Graham came across, he still sounded and looke slimey.
right2bright on September 12, 2007 at 8:04 AM
Graham is a McCain lap dog. He knows he looked like the epitome of a fool on the shamnesty sellout. Now, like McCain, he is going to the only area that is a positive for them. McCain got a bump on Iraq in the debate and Graham is following his master in hopes of reversing negative images of his other debacles. He can’t be trusted.

Have been searching for years for what he reminds me of. Thank you very much. I can cross that off my list and finally fix that drain my wife has been complaining about.

I did take a speed reading course, I’m just not very smart. I was just saying you have a very, I guess I’ll use the word unique, writing style.
