Al-AP smears Gitmo guards

Here’s the headline adorning the AP’s latest:
Guantanamo detainees tell of abuses
I read that and thought, “Here we go again. The AP has unearthed more uncorroborated terrorist tales of abuse and is printing them as though they’re verified fact.” But I was wrong. That’s not what the AP is reporting, at all.
Detainees flinging body waste at guards. Guards interrupting detainees at prayer. Interrogators withholding medicine. Hostility and tension between inmates and their keepers at the Guantanamo Bay prison are evident in transcripts obtained by The Associated Press.
Who is “abusing” whom in that lead paragraph? The feces-flingers or the guards accused of “interrupting detainees at prayer?”
Continuing:
The military has said Guantanamo is relatively calm compared to last year. But a report released by the detention center last month shows mass disturbances are up sharply over 2006 and forced removal of prisoners from cells and assaults with bodily fluids are on pace to match or exceed last year’s total.
The transcripts, obtained by the AP on Friday, illustrate the friction.
A Yemeni detainee, Mohammed Ali Em al-Zarnuki, warned his panel of three U.S. military officers that inmates would attempt suicide unless guards stop interrupting prayers, moving detainees during prayer time and whistling and creating other distractions.
I’m still not seeing any actual abuse by the guards, though the inmates sound whiny. The “assaults with bodily fluids” refers to actions by inmates, not guards, by the way.
The remainder of the article continues along the same lines. It’s clear from its thrust that the AP puts more weight on the word of the inmates than on the guards, even though the inmates are the confessed abusers.
The headline misleads, as it was intended to, on the point of who is doing the abusing.

I was just reading this. Sounds pretty tame compared to any US prison.
Warned or whined?
Well, I will continue not caring unless the Mohammed Ali Em al-Zarknukis of the world stop blowing people up, beheading victims and stoning young women to death.

How dare we interrupt their prayers! We’re so intolerant.
p0s3r on September 11, 2007 at 9:44 PM
Maybe we should release them one by one after giving them a send off thanking each one for all the information they provided. I wonder how many are eager to return to their “friends” in the jihad?

Exactly. The only thing that surprises me is that Yahoo! isn’t running this on their front page right now. That’s why they do this, folks. They want that headline on home pages and front pages of papers so that tens of millions of Americans will breeze by the paper on their table in the morning, or skim headlines when they pull up their browser and work and think “we keep torturing at Gitmo”. Even though there’s been no “torture” at Gitmo.. those mother-f-ers actually live better than they did in their home countries, and virtually all have gained weight because they have steady hearty meals.
As I’ve said before, the image of Gitmo=Abu Ghraib has been well drilled in to the American people’s minds. Outside of news junkies, people don’t even know the difference, or that what happened at Abu Ghraib was rare, and had nothing to do with “torture” or “interrogation”… it was a few bad seeds screwing off, and they’ve rightly been punished.

The AP headline writers are subtle.
Detainees abused — inaccurate
Which of the following best fits the MSM line?
Detainees complain of abuses
Detainees tell of abuses
Detainees abuse Gitmo guards

Bryan, it doesn’t matter who’s abusing whom, because when the detainees are doing the abusing, it’s still our fault. Their bad actions are always in reaction to our actions. Listen to Evan Sayet’s Heritage Foundation lecture (again), and it will all make perfect sense.

Attempt, or commit?
Either way, knock yourselves out, fellas.

I’m a freakin’ oracle. As I write this comment, it is now appearing on Yahoo!’s home page:

Current headlines:
Oh come on Yahoo! You know you want to bump that misleading bullsh** up to number 1!

Here in the States, if the ACLU interrupts prayers, it’s usually called constitutional.

Terrorists given immediate field tribunals upon capture, and who are thereby condemned and shot, as “spies and saboteurs”, never seem to issue any complaints to any lawyers.
Firing squads keep the propaganda of the enemy to a minimum.

You know, I wish they would not merely “attempt” suicide, I wish they would succeed. Can we not provide implements to that end? A rope? Perhaps a sharp piece of metal? If they really want to off themselves sans a bomb-laden suicide vest, I suggest we help them accomplish their mission in life. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
thedecider on September 12, 2007 at 12:24 AM
Let them kill them selves, good riddance to them.

I couldn’t believe this article, then I remembered it was written by al AP. What a bunch of putzes. Don’t they realize that all this whining doesn’t do them any good? How about 1 year of protein shakes instead of Duck a l’orange with rice pilaf? How about no prayer rug and no koran and the only text is Dyanetics and we put them in a room without any windows for months at a time (and tell them Mecca is due south). I am sick to death of hearing about how bad these scumbags have it at the hands of our soldiers. They are lucky to be alive, and given the kinds of assaults on our guards, they are lucky not to be beaten to a pulp.
Whoever said earlier that battlefield sentences and firing squads was right on the money. It seems they are more of a problem to us in Gitmo. If only we could get firing squads to handle their ACLU lawyers, too. Sorry, now I’m just getting greedy.

Sure, they tried to kill Americans, but… whistling during prayers!?!? This torture must end NOW!

A threat or a promise.
Bring in the Marine corps marching band, I think we have a resolution to detaining all of the Gitmo jerks. The numbers shold be much less in a few weeks of band practice.
