Hsuthanasia! Hillary dumps $850,000 in odoriferous donations; Update: Train mystery deepens

posted at 8:21 pm on September 10, 2007 by Allahpundit

Smells like … victory.

“In light of recent events and allegations that Mr. Norman Hsu engaged in an illegal investment scheme, we have decided out of an abundance of caution to return the money he raised for our campaign,” Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a statement Monday night. “An estimated 260 donors this week will receive refunds totaling approximately $850,000 from the campaign.”

Wolfson said the Clinton campaign also will vigorously review its fundraisers, including thorough criminal background checks, in the future. “In any instances where a source of a bundler’s income is in question, the campaign will take affirmative steps to verify its origin,” he said.

Flip Pidot’s been all over this angle since the beginning. Even for the Clinton machine, $850K is a lot of beans; they must have it on pretty good authority that most, if not all, of Hsu’s bundles are laundered. Otherwise, why not wait until the DOJ investigation is over to dump it?

Go ye and read if you missed this one Saturday night. Today’s word of the day is “Ponzi.”

Update: Ben Smith questions the timing. For once, so do I.

Update: Flip’s still running the numbers on Hsu’s bundles. $850,000 is a nice start. Now what about the other million?

Update: A suicide attempt, maybe? Yeesh.

That night, passengers on in the sleeper compartment across the aisle from his noticed a hat, a book and other items spilling into the hallway from under the door. The next morning, the drapes were still drawn. Returning from breakfast, one passenger peaked through the curtains and saw a person wedged against the door. The passenger, Joanne Segale, a retired school-bus driver from Sonora, Calif., knocked on the window but got no answer. Mrs. Segale said she saw that he appeared to be in fetal position, bare chested. “It appeared this person had fallen out of bed,” she said.

Eventually, three conductors used the crowbar to pry the door open.

Mrs. Segale said that Mr. Hsu “could not stand. He was acting like he didn’t understand them. They tried to get him up but he couldn’t walk.” At one point, Mr. Hsu asked the Amtrak attendants if he was in jail, according to Mrs. Segale.

When Mr. Hsu was helped to the bathroom, Mrs. Segale says she saw “lots and lots of medication in that room. I could see pills on the floor and rolling around.”

No need to hammer EVERY dem who got this dirty money

William Amos on September 10, 2007 at 8:24 PM

How in the world was Hillary setting fund raising records!! /s

This is huge. 23k to 850 k in 2 days. Wow.

She’s up to her neck in mud.

mylegsareswollen on September 10, 2007 at 8:25 PM

And not one word in the past 2 weeks in my upstate NY newspaper.

Connie on September 10, 2007 at 8:26 PM

She must have been feeling some heat, I say keep the fire at her toes, those two are a pox on America.

bbz123 on September 10, 2007 at 8:27 PM

So is she a Christian for real? Who am I to say I guess. But can’t blame one for wondering when she

takes laundered money, is so pro-abortion she’s for killing partly born babies, and there is much credible evidence that she did dirty money things re: Whitewater, called others liars re: her own husband’s infidelities, hid 900 FBI files for many moons and lied about it, and

inviolet on September 10, 2007 at 8:29 PM

Hill is doing the right thing. If this is not proof of her Christian faith, then what is?

JiangxiDad on September 10, 2007 at 8:30 PM

Man these people are such amateur’s. If you want to see how to raise big time money, just come and watch the Chicago Machine (organization) and learn how, and it’s all legit.

Legions on September 10, 2007 at 8:30 PM

(continued) fired a whole slew of people with no cause and slandered them to cover it up (Travel Office firings). Et cetera.

All I will say is: if I took those stands (eg abortion) and did those actions, I would not be able to call myself a Christian.

inviolet on September 10, 2007 at 8:31 PM

Just two weeks ago, this is what the oily Wolfson had to say.

Norman Hsu is a longtime and generous supporter of the Democratic party and its candidates, including Senator Clinton. During Mr. Hsu’s many years of active participation in the political process, there has been no question about his integrity or his commitment to playing by the rules, and we have absolutely no reason to call his contributions into question.

Betcha he’d like a mulligan on that one.

JammieWearingFool on September 10, 2007 at 8:31 PM

I love it when they say that the ill-gotten funds will be given to charity. Just what charity are we talking about? Some pet project that will funnel the money back or some really apolitical organization that actually does some good? I hope that somebody is able to follow up on his question.

DAT60A3 on September 10, 2007 at 8:32 PM

Actually from what I read this money is going back to the people that gave it and not charity

William Amos on September 10, 2007 at 8:33 PM

PONZI? I’m betting on launderd drug cartel monies. Those pardons Bill handed out in his last days cost alot of Do Re Me.

sonnyspats1 on September 10, 2007 at 8:35 PM

Didn’t store the money in the freezer?

Kini on September 10, 2007 at 8:38 PM

It seems Hsu was involved in a scheme where he told investors that they would set up a loan system for businesses to borrow from. It raised 15 million dollars. However it was all a fake because they werent making money Hsu was only giving older investers some of the money he got from newer investors.

Oh and one condition was that investors had to donate to democrats in congress

William Amos on September 10, 2007 at 8:38 PM

BTW Hillary is trying to get ahead of the curve on this. Other dems will have to follow suit.

This is going to make hillary very unpopular in some democratic circles

William Amos on September 10, 2007 at 8:39 PM

Hadn’t even seen Smith’s post, but I also found the timing curious, just as we’re enter enter the 9/11 news cycle.

Ah, just like the old scandal days the the Friday night document drops.

JammieWearingFool on September 10, 2007 at 8:39 PM

Giving back $850 grand is a BIG DEAL…I vet it has to do with this

One associate, Irvine businessman Jack Cassidy, said he had tried to warn authorities and the Clinton campaign as early as June that he feared Hsu was running an illicit enterprise, but had gotten no response.

“Nobody picked up the ball,” said Cassidy, who was not an investor but heard about Hsu’s business from a friend.

Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson declined to respond to Cassidy’s claim, saying only that the campaign had conducted a background check of Hsu, who has emerged in the last three years as one of the Democratic Party’s biggest fundraisers.

Declining to responde means they can’t.

Florida’s GOP chief ripped Hillary Clinton for attending a fundraiser Monday hosted by former Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez, triggering a four-lettered tirade from the brash politician who beat back federal corruption charges nearly two decades ago.

Florida’s GOP chief ripped Hillary Clinton for attending a fundraiser Monday hosted by former Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez, triggering a four-lettered tirade from the brash politician who beat back federal corruption charges nearly two decades ago.

Martinez was convicted but successfully appealed, and two subsequent trials ended in hung juries. Told about the snarky press release from Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer, Martinez called him a vulgar word for a female body part.

”I would debate any f—— Republican about my past,” Martinez said in a telephone interview. “We’ll have a debate mano a mano if they want to take me on. I’m going to take them on.”

He added: “I’m a businessman. I’m a Democrat. Why shouldn’t I raise money at my house? I will get on the horse, and I will beat the s— out of them.”

William Amos on September 10, 2007 at 8:41 PM

How about putting Hsu on the stand and having him testify as to his relationship with the Clintons. These two are garbage. It might be time at last to start reeling them in…

If Hillary wants to be president, then everybody should get

Play there game(hint, hint, maybe HAM could do it!)a documentry for t.v.,like Micheal Moore(G!d I hate mentioning his name)but the difference is this documentry on Hillary would be true.

This is so much bullchips, people. Clinton & Co. don’t do jack if it doesn’t involve political expediency. Shillary can’t pick a damn silver pattern without consulting the polls. Who in blue-blazes does she think she’s kidding?

gryphon202 on September 10, 2007 at 9:35 PM

Hillary dumps $850,000 in odoriferous donations

And all will be forgotten (not that the media ever really noticed in the first place).

Some will say “she did the right thing, end of story”, but I think it’s quite clear there’s a lot more to be explored here. We still don’t know where the hell his money is coming from, and we don’t know that he’s the true (or only) ringleader. And again, it’s never been just about Hillary, it’s been about….wait for it….. the Dem “Culture of Corruption”.

And it’s about the fact that no one should be dumb enough to think that the Dems were oblivious as to what this “Hillraiser” and his web of shady people were up to. Does anyone really think top Dems weren’t completely in the know about what was going down? No, there was simply a massive orchestrated effort to filter in millions of dollars from unknown sources, and the Dems (especially the Clintons) just had no idea what was going on. Riiiiiiiiiiiight.

RightWinged on September 10, 2007 at 9:36 PM

Couple of questions for the panel:

1. Wasn’t it just a couple of days ago that Hsu was an apparel executive? Now he runs a well known investment scam? Did the NY Times (and Hillary) not know this 2 days ago?

2. Will the FBI let Hillary refund the $850k to these people? Seems like a problem to me.

Think about how many Norman Hsus might really be out there all giving money to Dems. A hundred? A thousand? Who knows?

Jimbojack on September 11, 2007 at 1:10 AM

I’ve been thinking— All these illegal donations ‘given to charity’ (Yeah, Right, WHICH Charities, and I want to see the canceled checks)

Or worse, given back to the donors…. Who will turn around launder it again and pass it back to the politicians more covertly so they don’t get caught again.

The money SHOULD be CONFISCATED by the Feds (or the State if it isn’t done interstate) and put into the General Fund and/or applied directly into any budget deficit.

The way they do it now, there is no deterrent to repeat offenders… Even when they get an insignificant fine.

It would give ‘the authorities’ a bit of an enticement to enforce the laws.

Also, maybe set it up like the IRS does if you turn in a tax cheat; Give the tattle-tale 10% of it.
