Good news (really): Light sabers coming to the Wii

My old fencing skills may come in handy after all.
The ultimate geek-fantasy of using the Wii-mote as a lightsaber in a Star Wars game could be closer than we think if the latest comments to surface from Activision’s Activate Asia Pacific conference are to be believed. During a demonstration of its upcoming LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga for Wii, LucasArts’ Mark Montuya commented today that the game’s motion-sensitive lightsaber action is “just a taster” for a future release involving motion-sensitive lightsaber combat…
Montuya wouldn’t elaborate any further on how it would work in-game, nor address the obvious question of how to portray lightsabers impacting against each other with the interface; but we’re happy just knowing that somehow, at some stage, it’s going to happen.
Wii sales are gonna double on this news.

Wii!!!!! Now if they will just create that cryogenic block Han Solo was frozen into all will be well as soon as we start rounding up the radical left.

I’m going to crush you like I crushed you in tennis. We’re going to have to figure out how to get Allah one, so we can all play online.
Michelle on September 10, 2007 at 11:43 PM
You never bring up the boxing result. Funny, that.
Bryan on September 10, 2007 at 11:45 PM
Dude, awesome! I’m so glad I have a Wii!
Bad Candy on September 10, 2007 at 11:48 PM
Super Mario Galaxy is coming out soon too!
Bad Candy on September 10, 2007 at 11:50 PM
I will have to admit that the commercial industry does a lot more for Star Wars geeks than us Star Trek geeks. I guess if given the choice, I’d opt at keeping us Trekkies on the cutting edge of science than on the cutting edge of wireless controllers for Jedi Legomen!
Weebork on September 10, 2007 at 11:51 PM
Michelle, go get mario strikers and super smash brothers – maybe we can have a HOTAIR WII tournament
Defector01 on September 10, 2007 at 11:51 PM
Granted Michelle you did beat Bryan with your mad wii tennis skillz, but he did make a more than respectable comeback with a TKO in the boxing disipline Just sayin….. Heh Heh Off Topic I would like to take time here in rememberance of the attacks of 9/11/00. Also Michelle and team thank you for your unwaviering patriotism and principled stand on issues. Blah Blah Blah you know the rest ect.
sonnyspats1 on September 10, 2007 at 11:52 PM
That was not a TKO. It was a KO. First round. And it wasn’t the only one.
Bryan on September 10, 2007 at 11:53 PM
Suddenly, I don’t want to sell “Death Sticks”.
Weebork on September 10, 2007 at 11:53 PM
oooohhh! SNAP!
Weight of Glory on September 10, 2007 at 11:55 PM
Dude, that would rule so much! We’d have to set up a Hotair matchup on Super Smash Bros. Speaking of which, I’ve gotta set up my DS for online play…though I’d have to do some practice in Advance Wars before I started doing online. I wouldn’t mind getting RE4 on the Wii, even though I have the Gamecube version.
Bad Candy on September 10, 2007 at 11:55 PM
I really have to give Nintendo some credit for coming up with their controller system that lets you interact with games much more than moving your fingers around. If only Microsoft had such innovation, they could have had something similar for the 360, but given their history, they’d have to wait for someone else to come up with it before they can
stealemulate it.Playing a game like “Bioshock” would have been much more fun if I was able to interact like people are able to do on the Wii.

I thought he lived in your basement and you threw food down to him every so often…
amerpundit on September 11, 2007 at 12:13 AM
Just picked up Tiger Woods ‘08, which might be the best sports game yet for the Wii….
However, geekboy fantasies of wielding a lightsaber….And to think I was holding out for Guitar Hero…
Spc Steve on September 11, 2007 at 12:30 AM
You know I love your work and admire your courage.
But now…to find you talking smack online about a video game at this late hour…priceless. My admiration for you has just soared!
On other Wii news, I finally decided to ignore the bad fanboy reviews and bought myself Madden ‘08 for the Wii. It’s awesome. The fun factor is at least as high as Wii Sports.
May I suggest a HotAir “Vent” Madden-a-thon featuring (I’m guessing here) the Seattle Seahawks versus the Dallas Cowboys?
Anton on September 11, 2007 at 12:31 AM
The next step would be for Nintendo to revamp the Powerglove. The Powerglove could be used to direct “Force” powers, like say, lightning or the good ol’ choke power. Then, in combination, you would have both the light saber and the PG for an extra Star Wars experience!
Good idea, no?
Weebork on September 11, 2007 at 12:37 AM
Right on!!! The Wiimote was made for lightsabers.

A guy with the last name “Montuya” is developing a sword fighting game!? AWESOME! “My name is Mark Montuya. You killed my padawan. Prepare to die.”

off-topic alert:
rudy’s website has gone 9/11

Vincenzo on September 11, 2007 at 12:53 AM
i’d also like to point out that it seems of the major candidate’s websites, only hilary clinton’s mentions 9/11 besides Giuliani’s going total 9/11 blackout. hilary’s just has a blurb. john mccain is fighting islamic exremists, obama is collecting money, and mitt romney is, well, smiling as usual. and of course, fred!’s website is his announcement.
once again, Giuliani is on top fo the pack of what matters most today.

Funny how boxing games, no matter what the platform always end up being so much fun. The first console I bought myself was the original Nintendo, so I could play Mike Tyson’s Punchout.
I hope you guys do a rematch video for the boxing. Maybe do a musical interlude like they did in Rocky III; show Michelle training up…maybe Bryan could do some Clubber Lang smack talkin…you could have some fun with the music on that one. Instead of ‘Eye of the Tiger’, you could put it to ‘Do the Hustle’ or if you’re of the horrible hip hop mindset ‘Lean like a Cholo’.

Fixed it.

Too bad there isn’t a serious racing game for the Wii. I’d crush all of you :-)
Hint for the boxing rematch; Michelle, use your speed and don’t try to punch with Bryan.

In the future, all global conflicts will be settled via Super Smash Bros. Brawl. And Fred Thompson will be an unlockable character.
Mario Kart DS awaits… (revs engine tauntingly)

I think he’d rather have an IPhone, MM. Now that they’ve cut the price by $200, do you think you can swing it for him?
The future of the world depends upon it.
BacaDog on September 11, 2007 at 7:21 AM
It’s kinda hard to get a Wii controller translation for ‘we don’t need to fight, let’s find a peaceful solution.’
James on September 11, 2007 at 7:35 AM
Am I alone in thinking that a Lego Knights of the Old Republic game would be simply awesome?
ZK on September 11, 2007 at 7:37 AM
It definitely makes me want one. But I wonder how it’ll work. Can you keep fighting after it lops off an arm or leg? And if so, how long until that becomes Black Knight-ish?
Tanya on September 11, 2007 at 8:01 AM
Never bought a Playstation…
Once bought an XBOX, but sold it two months later…
But the Wii…I knew it would be a good buy. That sucker has been will be keeping me entertained a long time. :)
MadisonConservative on September 11, 2007 at 8:29 AM
Michelle won at tennis. Bryan won at boxing. Get out your wii light sabers, and let your jedi skills be the tie-breaker.
Bigfoot on September 11, 2007 at 8:53 AM
It’s a virtual flesh wound ;^)

… and because my kids so desperately want one, so will their chore list.

Leverage. It’s a beautiful thing.

Does Lego Han shoot first? He better!
Sir Loin on September 11, 2007 at 10:55 AM
What is it with you people and Microsoft “stealing”? Nintendo and Sony “stole” the controller too if you wanna go that route. Actually, Sony literally stole their controller design, got sued and lost. I like the xboxes’ controllers. I couln’t care less about originality because when it comes to controllers MS made the best I ever had the honor of wielding.
Darth Executor on September 11, 2007 at 10:59 AM
If you bought Allah a Wii; he’d just hock it for an iphone :P
lorien1973 on September 11, 2007 at 11:14 AM
If Nintendo really wants to clean up, they could do a “Super Punch Out” for Wii.
Who here hasn’t wondered how they would fare against the likes of Piston Hurricane, Bald Bull, and Super Macho Man?
Kid from Brooklyn on September 11, 2007 at 12:05 PM
I can’t wait to see the new generation of ‘Star Wars Kid’ videos this game will spawn.
James on September 11, 2007 at 12:29 PM
If there are scores to be settled, do it like a man…with a net game of Unreal Tournament Infiltration.
Nothing says “eat my shorts” like a .50BMG headshot from a mile away ;-)
I was more of a Han Solo blaster kid, not a namby pamby Jedi…so prancing around my living room waving a Wii-mote around doesn’t pump my nads… $0.02
Ochlan on September 11, 2007 at 12:48 PM
No, Michelle, you crushed him in a simulation of tennis. The only game or sport that you can really play on a computer or video game console is chess. All the rest are just pretend. Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs notwithstanding, if a man and a woman of equal playing skill played each other in tennis the man would most likely win due to faster serves (greater upper body strength) and higher speed (men are faster than women).
rokemronnie on September 11, 2007 at 6:33 PM
allah and tennis? I’m havin a little trouble with the mental image on that one…
Bryan, U LOST???
We’ve seen Michelle’s tennis swing. Kinda girly.
.
oh well, at least you knocked her out, and no spittle!
