Video: Worst person in the world names himself worst person in the NFL

Not the first time Olby’s climbed down from something with his name on it, although it may be the first for which he’s personally responsible. The offense is his spastic, semi-coherent rant about Michael Vick at halftime a few weeks ago. I said at the time that even after three viewings I still wasn’t sure what his point was; evidently I wasn’t the only one. I wonder which NBC executive leaned on him to “clarify” his earlier comments, doubtless because the network was getting pissy phone calls from people who misunderstood and thought he was defending Vick. They can’t have their golden boy alienating the viewership in his first week. It’s supposed to take at least a few months for that.

In case you’re keeping score, number of apologies for mild ambiguity in a throwaway comment about a quarterback: one. Number of apologies for repeated Nazi analogies, conspiracy theorizing about terrorist plots, and tacit endorsements of Geraldo Rivera’s desire to spit on Michelle: zero.

Keith, I still don’t get your point.

mojowire on September 7, 2007 at 9:11 AM

The Weather Channel was particularly good during half time. I want football, not Keith’s insane act.

William Teach on September 7, 2007 at 9:15 AM

I remember when my team, the San Francisco 49ers, signed Lawrence Phillips, a man who was benched for half of his senior season at Nebraska for throwing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs. I refused to watch my team that season and rooted against them until they were rid of that scoundrel.

The real punishment would not be, as Olbermann claims, NFL fans booing Vick when and if he returns to football. The real punishment would be if NFL fans — especially those of whichever team were to sign him — boycotted every game in which Vick played.

aunursa on September 7, 2007 at 9:17 AM

How does he come up with himself being the Worst Person In The NFl, when he is not in the NFL? Doesn’t he mean the Worst Person In The World? Me thinks that was what he meant, but couldn’t bring himself to say that.

No doubt, he got a lot of heat from higher ups who told him to backtrack.

jihadwatcher on September 7, 2007 at 9:25 AM

You know cut him some slack..maybe spitting is the only way for him to get his bodily fluid on a woman?

Pam on September 7, 2007 at 9:25 AM

This explains why a few days ago NBC ordered youtube to remove all videos of the Vick commentary.

johnny dollar on September 7, 2007 at 9:26 AM

Olberman is an idiot. Booing is a punishment? Big woo. Jeff Gordon gets booed every time he wins and he manages to survive quite well championship after championship. Booing is not a punishment, it’s fans vocalizing their feelings. Punishment for Vick should be banning him from the NFL permanently. He’s one sick puppy.

katieanne on September 7, 2007 at 9:29 AM

I’m a huge NFL fan. Normally, I would watch the pregame, but not with this twit on the show. NOt sorry I missed it either.

swami on September 7, 2007 at 9:31 AM

This shows you the extent of this douchebag’s creative talents. He shows up on NBC’s NFL broadcasts and what does he pull out of his numb skull ……. why, it’s his lame “Worst Person in the __________ ” routine. And he names himself the worst person in episode one of Krazy Keith is Allowed Out of the Studio.

Then he calls himself “Worst Person in the NFL”. [chuckle]

That would make him worse than Vick, worse than O.J., would it not? And he’s so proud, and clueless.

Quote of the day by Cris Collinsworth (to Olby):

So basically every week you’re going to do a commentary and then backtrack the next week…

Olby’s response should’ve been: “Well, yeah… I am a liberal, don’t forget.”

I don’t get the logic of bringing this segment over from Countdown. The original version tends to be a Republican/conservative hit piece, so did NBC think they could “pass gas” in one room and immediately enter another without the whiff of political partisanship following along?

If the origins of this NFL version were not odious enough to folks of one political stripe, the average non-political sports fan at least gets “treated” to a negative-titled halftime piece every Sunday evening. When you have a limited amount of airspace to fill and you want to hold viewers until the second half starts, why title your segment “The Worst Person” of anything? Does that sound like a fun way to spend a few minutes? I thought Olby might try to have some fun with it, but the first installment was a semi-serious piece of Michael Vick. I don’t understand NBC’s logic, here.

Graybark on September 7, 2007 at 10:09 AM

I have never actually seen this idiot live, but I caught this last night. I wondered the same thing:

How does he come up with himself being the Worst Person In The NFl, when he is not in the NFL?
jihadwatcher on September 7, 2007 at 9:25 AM

It also seemed like Costas, Collinsworth, and Barber really can’t stand him. Maybe I read the “body language” wrong, but that’s the impression I got!

lan astaslem on September 7, 2007 at 10:12 AM

Whoopi made him do it.

Tiki Barber is a conservative right? atleast it is somewhat balanced out….although to balance out Olberman you would need a Savage

Ditto. I refused to watch till that jacka** was long gone; which is exactly what I do with Olby, God willing. I only watch him on the posts here.

Still waiting for them to pull the plug on him, which can’t come soon enough. Then he can go into recluse hiding of the NFL’s Witness Protection Program, along with Phillips and many others.

Gotcha. It’s bad to make some random comment about a completely screwed up quarterback. But to give the stiff arm, to call your political oppponents Nazis – kosher. Childish and moronic theories regarding terrorists – all good. Endorsement of “spitting” on another human being – Cool.

I got it. And why I never watch MSNBC.

jp on September 7, 2007 at 10:14 AM

The question is, why should one need to “balance” a frigging sporting event in the first place? There shouldn’t be a political pundit of any stripe in the stadium unless he or she bought a ticket.

Pam on September 7, 2007 at 9:25 AM

Nice, Pam — but probably true.

I actually saw the halftime show last night, and was somewhat surprised that Olby named himself the worst person in the NFL. I did notice that he seemed rather uncomfortable — almost as if he was walking on egg shells. Also, what’s up with the red phone? Is that the direct line to the GE top brass, that rings everytime he says something stupid? If so, that phone will be ringing nonstop.

Rick on September 7, 2007 at 11:45 AM

Tiki Barber is a conservative right?

Only thing I’ve heard from Tiki on this regard is that he has some republican views and some democrat views. I think he said that on fox news morning show one time.

He’s a nice guy. I like Tiki and Ronde (go Bucs!) so I really don’t want either to venture into politics. I don’t want to dislike either of them for something they say. Stick to sports and childrens books.

Why do we have to suffer with Olby on the monday night football set? Self important Costas is bad enough. Collinsworth too. It’s like NBC drug the bottom of the barrel filling that stage trying to make football seem more boring that it is.

lorien1973 on September 7, 2007 at 11:46 AM

Also, what’s up with the red phone?

Olby thinks he’s batman now.

lorien1973 on September 7, 2007 at 11:46 AM

This segment was the WORST part of an already crappy and overwrought NBC season kickoff.

If Olby is on anymore game broadcasts…and i suspect he’ll be a feature part of every single one coz the com-lib execs louve him for his hatred of all things “Mr. Bush”, and coz he’s in the NBC “team picture”…then i will have to make sure I am on the crapper or getting another beer during the time he is on the air at gametime.

worse than all that, Peyton Manning came up 12 yards shy of 300 passing yards, which would have given me an extra 10 fantasy points…points i expect to need come Sunday.

Mike D. on September 7, 2007 at 1:35 PM

And to think people thought Dennis Miller was a bad choice for an NFL venue….

“WHAAAAAT A DOOOO-FUS!!”

BigOrangeAxe on September 7, 2007 at 2:11 PM

I’ll never figure out why NBC/MSNBC considers KO to be the “Bo Jackson” of the news by shuffling him from news to sports to social commentaries on a daily basis. If anything, he proves daily he is the “anti-Bo Jackson” by his rantings. At least Bo knows football, Bo knows baseball, etc….It turns out KO doesn’t know news, KO doesn’t know sports, KO doesn’t know how to form an opinion. Also, KO doesn’t know how to speak or write or think or the difference between right or wrong. Basically, KO doesn’t know much of anything.

The sad part is the had a great team of guys like John Madden, Al Michaels, Jerome Bettis, Bob Costas and Chris Collinsworth, then they had to go and ruin it by adding Keith Olbermann into the mix. How NBC-like of them.

How much longer he can keep up this pathetic tapdancing, without a total meltdown, will be instructive.
