Open thread: The last Fred-less GOP debate; Update: Huckabee clashes with Paul over the surge; Update: GOP candidates smack Fred; Update: Rudy defends his personal life

Eight elephants in a room and another who isn’t. The only one likely to mention Fred is Huckabee, who’s been knocking him regularly of late to try to boost his profile as a social con alternative. Count on a video highlight or two here later; the obligatory “Fred announces on Leno’s couch” clip will get its own post shortly after midnight. (FYI, the taping’s over and he’s already made it official.) Standard rules apply — if you’re watching and you see something, say something.
Some reading while we wait. Carl Cameron, who contributed to today’s earlier Fox News bombshell about Fred and who called the world’s attention to the fact that he rode around the Iowa state fair in a golf cart, kicks off the coverage tonight by noting how pissed the New Hampshire Republicans are at him for skipping the debate. Rush Limbaugh piles on by smacking Fred for devaluing the office of the presidency by announcing on Leno, an odd gripe for someone as media savvy as he is. Meanwhile, the last guy to announce on Leno takes a hard look at the electoral master stroke the GOP is trying to pull off in his state and comes out against it, naturally. And Rudy’s campaign trumpets the fact that he’s locked up Robert Duvall’s endorsement, which is somehow viscerally, if not logically, impressive, even if it does possibly reinforce the increasingly poisonous image of the party as “very old-fashioned, very old and not in touch with the realities of today’s society.”
I’ll leave you with Hillary’s awful new cookie-cutter ad about “change” with “experience.” It’s good at moments like these to remember the big differences with the other side.
Update: Brit wasn’t going to let them dodge the elephant in the room. Here’s the very first question of the night, preceded by a transparent slap at Fred ducking the debate by the head of the New Hampshire GOP.
Update: Arguably the most interesting, and deftly handled, answer of the evening. Frank Luntz’s focus group says it was McCain’s night, though.

Huck was my favorite going in although not a contender. Now he’s not even my favorite.
Mitt looks and sounds more like a slick politician everytime I see him.
Rudy was the Mayor of NY. I just found that out tonight. /sarc
Paul is a whackjob.
Hunter puts me to sleep.
Tanc hits them out of the park but he doesn’t fit the mold.
RobertCSampson on September 5, 2007 at 10:39 PM
In closing: Chris is the man. He set the bar high tonight.
Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2007 at 10:39 PM
That’s all folks.
The end
Dersu on September 5, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Nice job by FOX
Valiant on September 5, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Whew. after all that I can say: GO FRED!!!!
VolMagic on September 5, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Fun times guys,
Thanks
conservnut on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Clearly….Ron Paul won the debate. /sarcasm
JetBoy on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
I learned early on just to take a sip and not down the entire thing. Otherwise I’d be dead, and I’m a seasoned drinker.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Who wants to bet the Paulites are jumping to their cell phones now, flooding the polls, to inflate his polling?
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
so we have scientific proof that, even if one is stone drunk, ron paul sounds stupid?
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
No, they’ll be wowed by the fact if they don’t comply at a bare minimum their economy is dead and at a maximum they will now be known as “Craterstan.”
BKennedy on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
H&C is holding a text/phone poll for who won the poll. What do you want to be Paul wins that poll? Either that, or the network suppresses those votes.
nailinmyeye on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Mitt really shot himself in the foot during this debate. He’ll probably recover, but man, what a poor performance for such a good debator.
HYTEAndy on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
This is the first 2008 presidential debate I’ve watched (streaming). I think I picked the right one.
baldilocks on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Im watching Hannity and Colmes, where did they find these people? McCain? Yes, I agree he did well in the debate but he is not a conservative!!!
RobertCSampson on September 5, 2007 at 10:41 PM
I meant – for who won the debate. And – what do you want to bet. Man. I need to remember that preview button.
nailinmyeye on September 5, 2007 at 10:41 PM
Actually Chris Wallace won the debate!
RobertCSampson on September 5, 2007 at 10:41 PM
Certainly compared to his previous performances…
Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2007 at 10:41 PM
I don’t know who won, but I know Mitt lost.
conservnut on September 5, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Yeah, I noticed that Hunter had a more laid-back posture tonight. He wasn’t very “engaging,” even though the content of his responses was awesome.
HYTEAndy on September 5, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Word.
Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Dead economies have stopped which lunatic dictator? Not a deterrent, as far as I can tell. The only thing that might encourage is a revolution–which would be fine, if rather an unreliable means of defending our interests.
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Good job Fox. Best debate so far- I just hope the next one is as good and has a couple less people. At the very least Brownback and Paul wouldn’t be missed at all.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:42 PM
29 Republicans
Not conservatives. We may be dealing with the blueblood contingent here.
BKennedy on September 5, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Good job on the open blog everyone.
Thanks HA and MM
Dersu on September 5, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Agreed. :-)
baldilocks on September 5, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Ok, I’ll buy that :)
cadetwithchips2 on September 5, 2007 at 10:43 PM
How dare Rudy mention evidence that he’s actually done what he’s promising?
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 10:43 PM
I agree, Mitt did lousy.
I still have no one to vote for.
Dersu on September 5, 2007 at 10:44 PM
No, we have scientific proof that Ron Paul’s stupidity causes drunkenness.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:44 PM
That’s what i thought too, Paul got the better of him unfortunately. Huckabee also said we made a mistake, referring to going into iraq. What a fool. Just another RINO doing the Democrats work for them.
forged rite on September 5, 2007 at 10:45 PM
I don’t know who won the debate but I predict that Ron Paul (spit), will win the online poll.
Drew on September 5, 2007 at 10:45 PM
Rudy was the Mayor of NY. I just found that out tonight. /sarc
RobertCSampson on September 5, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Rudy’s version of John Kerry’s “Did you know that I was in Vietnam?”
MB4 on September 5, 2007 at 10:45 PM
Agreed.
And the people in that room who didn’t like Giuliani’s mention of New York, don’t seem to mind McCain’s constant “straight talk express” and recalling his service.
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 10:45 PM
Nothing, until you refer to NYC on Every. Single. Question. Being President is just a bit different than being a big city mayor.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:46 PM
Amen, Brother, Amen.
Tennessee Dave on September 5, 2007 at 10:47 PM
Hey. How many times again was it that Rudy lowered taxes? He keeps drumming it into my head.
It’s that which is annoying. Everything references to nyc for Rudy.
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 10:47 PM
I have to go with Hume.
steveegg on September 5, 2007 at 10:47 PM
Except he mentions it to show that he’s actually done what he’s saying, he isn’t just saying it. Should he not point to things he’s accomplished, backing up what he’s saying?
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 10:48 PM
Oh yay. Alan Colmes is with us. I may have to leave now.
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 10:49 PM
I was opposed to Romney, Rudy and McCain before the debate started. I’m more opposed to them now.
And what’s Rudy talk about in the post-debate wrapup? NYC! Crime reduced! Thanks, Mr. One Trick Pony.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:49 PM
Not necessarily.
Huckabee said, earlier in the debate, that whether going into Iraq was right or wrong was going to be debated by historians for years to come, but that in going into Iraq, we “broke it.” I think it was a poor choice of words, but I agree with what he said earlier in the debate, which is basically: we cannot leave Iraq at this moment with honor.
nailinmyeye on September 5, 2007 at 10:49 PM
Personally I thought Tanc did the best. I sincerely hope he wins the nomination, but I still prefer Romney over Rudy, and unless Tanc really shoots up in the primary standings I’m going to vote for Romney.
BKennedy on September 5, 2007 at 10:50 PM
Oh, and how is Rudy supposed to respond when the questioners refer to his policies in New York? “Well, while running that place that should not be named…”
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 10:50 PM
IIRC, Rudy has played himself on Law & Order.
Just sayin’
cadetwithchips2 on September 5, 2007 at 10:50 PM
Mentioning it- totally acceptable. Being unable to talk about anything but? Not so much.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:50 PM
With you there. Relevant to me.
Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2007 at 10:50 PM
Rudy – before talking about NYC again – just cracked on Paul again…and H&C ignored him.
nailinmyeye on September 5, 2007 at 10:50 PM
Sheesh, Rudy is still talking New York.
infidel4life on September 5, 2007 at 10:51 PM
Alan and the Dems are scared to death of Rudy being nominated……because he would win.
jp on September 5, 2007 at 10:51 PM
Point is Rudy is running for president of the whole country. The run up of his record was interesting. he’s going to have to move on and talk about something else.
Not that i’m ever going to vote for him in a primary.
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 10:52 PM
Personally I don’t mind Alan asking questions, he isn’t going to use the kiddie gloves unless he’s interviewing Demos.
BKennedy on September 5, 2007 at 10:52 PM
Rudy is proud of bringing shootings down in NYC.
But at what expense of 2nd rights?
Let the hood/bangers kill each other, who cares?
I still fear for my 2nd rights from him
Dersu on September 5, 2007 at 10:52 PM
I learned early on just to take a sip and not down the entire thing. Otherwise I’d be dead, and I’m a seasoned drinker.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:40 PM
If you think that you are a serious drinker, I can only assume that you have never gone drinking with Teddy. Or you swim real good!
MB4 on September 5, 2007 at 10:52 PM
And in order to show you how he’s actually done what he’s saying he’ll do, he points to the place he ran – New York. Considering he hasn’t run four different cities, NYC is the one place he can show you he actually implemented what he’s saying.
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 10:55 PM
Romney is scoring points off Rudy in the follow up.
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 10:55 PM
I said “seasoned” drinker, but still an amateur. Teddy is a professional.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:56 PM
Romney is, of course, correct. A governor can’t force a town to follow Federal Law.
cadetwithchips2 on September 5, 2007 at 10:56 PM
yep. I just found his constant nyc reference as distracting and annyoing as fred’s head bobbing earlier today.
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 10:56 PM
mayor of NYC is equal to governing many states, in terms of population. more unique in some ways.
jp on September 5, 2007 at 10:56 PM
And the head-bobbing isn’t something I’m really going to consider at the primary ballot box.
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 10:57 PM
Mitt screwed the pooch in this debate, but his only experience was in MA… and while he brought it up, he didn’t bring it up for every bloody question as did Rudy.
One. Trick. Pony.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:58 PM
Doh…
doriangrey on September 5, 2007 at 10:58 PM
Well, that rules out the possibility that you’re Larry Craig.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 10:59 PM
John McCain won this debate.
Ron Paul is a lunatic who does not belong on that same stage.
Phil Byler on September 5, 2007 at 10:59 PM
Either would make a fine Cabinet appointee. Neither a particularly good President.
cadetwithchips2 on September 5, 2007 at 11:00 PM
No, Mitt’s one constant thing is attacking Rudy’s job in New York.
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 11:00 PM
I’m saying these things distract and detract. If they make us work to get past them to the message, they’re not helping the cause. I happen to not care for Rudy, and I’m waiting to see with Fred. But they have to be decent communicators if they’re going to win, so I do care about head bobs and such.
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 11:00 PM
I’am going to see what MM is saying, good time here folks.
Fox did good!
Dersu on September 5, 2007 at 11:00 PM
Eliminate the CIA, the FBI the Department of Homeland Security…Hell the only place Ron Paul belongs in in the loony bin.
doriangrey on September 5, 2007 at 11:01 PM
Here’s McCain…
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 11:01 PM
Lost the internet feed. Is the free content over?
TexasDan on September 5, 2007 at 11:01 PM
Personally I thought it was a good debate and I learned a lot. Tanc rocked, Hunter was good, Huckabee was good, Rudy fizzled, Mitt was mixed, and McCain’s hypothetical about Iran made me wish he wasn’t so screwed up on immigration.
Fred shoulda been there.
Buzzy on September 5, 2007 at 11:01 PM
Force? Maybe, maybe not. Certainly the state can influence them though by cutting off funding and using the state police.
And Romney did do something… sort of. He waited until after a Democratic successor was named in the final weeks of his term to do so though, knowing it would never be implemented.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 11:01 PM
McCain made a come back tonight? I must have missed that when I blinked.
sonnyspats1 on September 5, 2007 at 11:02 PM
Agreed.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 11:03 PM
“For you to call it an amnesty bill”. No, John. The Republican base in general called it amnesty. Is it really good to reaffirm your support for Graham’s bill?
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 11:03 PM
Oh No. I’m watching the Frank Luntz focus group after the debate and they are all for McCain.
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
They must be Independents and not Republicans. What kind of Republican wears a green and white crocheted hat over hippie dippie hair?
I thought Guiliani won the debate.
Buy Danish on September 5, 2007 at 11:04 PM
I agree, but realistically the poll results a week from now won’t be affected significantly by this debate, as good as it was.
At some point they need to start thinning the field to give the serious candidates more time.
Hollowpoint on September 5, 2007 at 11:05 PM
You’re right. He certainly did…. and he left office screaming, LOOK WHAT I DID!!!!SEE???!! IM STRONG ON IMMIGRATION!!!!11!!
Did it following the Ceiling collapse in the Teddy, too.
cadetwithchips2 on September 5, 2007 at 11:06 PM
Should you have just said that, Allen?
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 11:06 PM
Thank God for the mute button.
infidel4life on September 5, 2007 at 11:06 PM
Fred 08 is up, if anyone wants to know.
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 11:08 PM
At least that exchange was closer to what I call a debate. Passion, a little anger, etc… is great and if a few insults would have been thrown in, it would have been better. More “truth” is revealed this way.
As far as content, Paul is clueless (but had a point in this case) and Huckabee was appealing to emotion and dumbing down a serious question. He’s probably just as clueless.
nottakingsides on September 5, 2007 at 11:09 PM
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m ready to vote for the FNC moderators! Wallace/Hume ‘08!

Wild guess… you’re not from New England ;) Most of the Hamilton-Wenham, Beverly Farms type Republicans ya know… Country Club
cadetwithchips2 on September 5, 2007 at 11:09 PM
Notice the Fox poll on who won? Mitt #7
Stick a fork in him…..He’s done
conservnut on September 5, 2007 at 11:09 PM
Yeah, a Rudy vs. Romney debate would be awesome.
Its a good thing Fred didn’t show up, he probably can’t comprehend a question in 60 seconds, nevermind answer it.
BKennedy on September 5, 2007 at 11:09 PM
Rudy must’ve done well, since all of the anti-Giuliani commenters are bashing him for talking too much about his record.
Big S on September 5, 2007 at 11:09 PM
okay, not MOST…. several.
cadetwithchips2 on September 5, 2007 at 11:09 PM
Hey look, Paul’s winning! Shocker.
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 11:10 PM
As predicted, the toofer candidate is pulling 35% in the FoxNews text-us poll.
steveegg on September 5, 2007 at 11:10 PM
The Ron Paul loons are out in force tonight.
infidel4life on September 5, 2007 at 11:11 PM
As Sean says, “Oh, here we go again. I’m getting sick of this.”.
amerpundit on September 5, 2007 at 11:11 PM
Never mind, Paul is 1st
conservnut on September 5, 2007 at 11:11 PM
