Danes arrest 8 al Qaeda suspects

posted at 10:05 am on September 4, 2007 by Bryan

Broad strata alert:

The suspects are of Afghan, Pakistani, Somali and Turkish origin and range in age from 19 to 29. Sharf said they were “producing an unstable explosive in a densely populated area” and that authorities had waited until they had gathered enough evidence before moving forward with the detentions.

This was a fairly large police operation; 11 locations raided and the police are still seeking suspects. The Danish police say that the arrests of the 8 so far thwarted an ongoing terror plot:

Danish police on Tuesday say they have foiled a possible terror attack on the nation’s capital Copenhagen. Members of Denmark’s intelligence agency PET took into custody eight Islamic militants believed to have links to the terrorist group al-Qaida. The arrests were made in separate raids at 2 a.m. following an extended surveillance operation.

According to PET head Jakob Sharf, six of the suspects are Danish citizens and two are foreigners. “With the arrests, we have prevented a terror attack,” Sharf told reporters. “Those arrested are militant Islamists with a connection to a leading al-Qaida person.”

Update (AP): It’s unrelated to the Mohammed cartoons and to the Danish troop presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, say Danish cops. How they’re so sure of that just yet is unclear. Keep your eye on this one, though: the alleged connection to a “leading Al Qaeda person,” the ethnic diversity of the suspects, and the proximity to the anniversary of 9/11 suggest this may be bigger than just Denmark. Remember, the NCTC chief says something is definitely in the works and there may be a European connection. Wouldn’t surprise me if there’s another big bust somewhere in the next day or two.

“six of the suspects are Danish citizens”
Treason? Hope it’s more than your usual 6 year EU sentence.

I thought it was just a bumper sticker war?

Man, they try so hard not to say the word, don’t they. AP, for stories such as these, where the press is not willing to use the ‘I’ word or the ‘M’ word, you should have the companion video of the gorilla playing the drums. After all, it is getting to the point that the Press’ unwillingness to identify these “youths” amounts to people ignoring a 400lb, drum playing gorilla in the room.

Wow, did a European official use the word “Islamist”??? I thought the EU had outlawed saying that….

Clark1 on September 4, 2007 at 10:34 AM

Yeah Weight, I just can’t imagine what these guys have in common that might bring them together in a plot like this.

They were gonna gang-rape the Little Mermaid, weren’t they?

Those BASTARDS!

“militant Islamists” – huh. i thought it would have been disaffected urban youths from Asia or maybe some Timothy McVeigh-type. “militant Islamists” – who would’ve thought?

Everytime a plot is foiled, the European people can remain in denial of the problem. They say, “See, nothing happened.”

You see fellow Americans, this is why it would be racist to profile anyone at airports. Look at all these people, they have absolutely nothing in common, nothing at all. Some of them are as much as 7 years apart and they are from places all over the earth. There are literally NO connections to see here. Oh, and you’re racist if you disagree.

I just hope they’re those gelding Danes I keep hearing about.

My single previous claim to fame, as reader Ed:

EUPHEMISM O’ THE DAY: “BROAD STRATA”
By Michelle Malkin • June 3, 2006 10:18 PM Oh, dear Lord. A jihadist plot, possibly of global scale, possibly imminent, unravels in Canada…and what do law enforcement officials do? Try to whitewash the obvious jihadi profile from the public’s mind.

At the press briefing held by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police today, the suspects who appeared in court–all sporting traditional Muslim male beards and requesting Korans–were described as coming from a “broad strata“ of society. (Hat tip: reader Ed)

Broad strata.

Yes, the same “broad strata” from which the 9/11 hijackers, 1993 World Trade Center bombers, USS Cole bombers, etc., etc., etc., came.

As a proud (no hyphen) American and a great-grandson of Danes, I hope Denmark is the first EU member to get serious about creeping galloping sharia.

Europe is at a tipping point…especially eastern Europe. It’s at a post-Christian, post-Communist crossroads. It remains to be seen if humanity can exist in a purely secular society or if there is an eternal power vacuum built in a man’s heart.

Islam fills power vacuums very aggressively and effectively.

Obviously, they are attacking Denmark to make it pull all of its troops out of Iraq. Oh wait. There aren’t any.

The real question about this terror plot is how exactly Bush is to blame and drove them to do it.

I’ve got a great idea!

Let’s put termites in the walls of our houses and see what happens!

Just because they reduced every place else they’ve been to disastrous crapistans, maybe our being so nice will change their behavior!?

More termites, please!

Holy crap, AP was very prescient on the Update prediction of a “big bust” in another day or two.
