So it requires that everybody be covered? Everybody John? <em>EVERYBODY?</em> <strong>What about the U.S. Congress John?</strong> Will they be forced to participate in this pipe dream John? I doubt it. You see they write the laws that would institute this pathetic program, and the members of the U.S. Congress conveniently, and regularly exclude themselves from participating in most of these social projects that they deem good for us, but not necessary for them. That’s your Imperial Federal Government at work.

What I can't believe is that Edwards tipped the left's hand and showed their cards so early. In their socialist utopia there won't be freedom. You'll have the safety tyrants, the health tyrants, the tax tyrants and on and on while the government grows and grows till it intrudes into every aspect of everyone's life. Does anyone think that people with high risk lifestyles or activities will do well under this system? These people see a child's game of tag as a problem so how do you think they'll end up looking at mountain climbing, skydiving, extreme sports of any type let alone risky lifestyles such as homosexuality or even heterosexual multi partner practices?

you have no idea how government's work. the savings from not covering fat, smoking, drinking people will not go to the healthy. It will go for some other "do good program".

Look at social security. All the surplus over the years did not go to fund social security it went to fund government.

Lotteries do not go to help education the proceeds go to fund education while the government reduces the funding from the genral fund by the same amount. Net is zero. It just gives the government more power and more funds.

Your sacrifice of a healthy lifestyle will do no good to kept costs down. The cost of universal care will continue to rise and tax revenues that were spent on healthcare will be redirected to other "worthy" causes.

The private sector takes the savings and returns it to the shareholders and bondholders. They do not lower your cost they lower THEIR costs. So I repeat you give up your freedom of eating, smoking, and drinking for what? nothing. For the illusion of doing good.

I have idiots commenting over at my place that this isn't any different than private insurance company mandates. Or mandatory immunizations.

First, I am opposed to government mandated immunizations for the same reason as I am opposed to this.

Second, if my private insurance company is mandating things I don't like, I have the choice of finding a different insurance provider. The Breck Girl's proposal is mandatory, meaning the <em>gummint</em> will be running it and you won't have any choice. Every Dhimmicrat is proposing outlawing the concept of private insurance — The Breck Girl, Shrillary and Osama bin ... Osama Obama .. Obamamama.

The Republicans have to get out front on this issue rather than be the girlie men they usually are and be cowering under their desks, too afraid to be demonized by the Drive By Media as not caring for people.

<blockquote>Edwards, who has been criticized by some for calling on Americans to be willing to give up their SUVs while driving one, acknowledged Sunday that he owns a Ford Escape hybrid SUV, purchased within the year, and a Chrysler Pacificia, which he said he has had for years.

"I think all of us have to move, have to make progress," he said. "I'm not holyier-than-thou about this. ... I'm like a lot of Americans, I see how serious this issue is and I want to address it myself and I want to help lead the nation in the right direction."

He said he would not buy another SUV in the future.</blockquote>

So, Silky has grandfathered himself in, but the rest of us have to give up our SUVs. Two America's for sure.

We do have one hope here. Silky would have to put this proposal into the budget bill since Congress holds the power of the purse. Even if he succeeded in getting such a thing through a Senate filibuster so that he could sign it, we can hope that the Court would do the right thing. With Roberts and Alito, chances are decent. There is that line in the first amendment "Congress shall make no law...," and it expressly talks about the freedom of choice, right?

You'd think that the lefties would be a bit more aware of that connundrum for them. That's their excuse all the time when it comes to abortion, after all.

He is simply nuts.

Of course, he used to be one of those attorneys that handled lawsuits against doctors. Mandating people to go to the doctor increases the cash cow for lawyers. All the better to sue you with my dear....

Thankfully I don't think we have a thing to worry about with this guy..he's too far out there.

<blockquote>thats about 8% of the population so no its not really a lot.
47 million not

And when you consider 10% of the people think Elvis is still alive, 8% is about as low as you are going to get. There is always that 10% that is,...well, just different.

Who cares if someone is fat or smokes? It isn’t your or mine business what someone’s lifestyle is. As a freeman I have the right to smoke or eat if I so choose. The consequences of those actions will be mine and mine alone. It is my choice not yours or the governments.</blockquote>

Under mandatory universal healthcare it’s really the government’s choice and responsibility as to your lifestyle. Your drunken, coughing, fat butt will be using way more than your fair share of the health care pie. That will not benefit the rest of us that live a healthy lifestyle and could possibly jeopardize our health or life because of the resources that are being spent to support your unhealthy choices.

Yeah the schools are doing such a great job. SAT scores just dropped again. At this rate the kids will know how to (only) make fire in another 15 years.

What are you thinking? Who cares if someone is fat or smokes? It isn't your or mine business what someone's lifestyle is. As a freeman I have the right to smoke or eat if I so choose. The consequences of those actions will be mine and mine alone. It is my choice not yours or the governments.

This reminds me of the seatbelt laws debate. The theory went that if everyone used their seatbelts the death rate would be lower and the amount of our auto insurance would decrease because there would be less costs to the insurance industry. Well my state now has mandatory seatbelt laws for the last 10 years and guess what my auto insurance costs more not less with a clean driving record. We were sold a bill of goods by the public do-gooders and got nothing (not even a decrease in the death rate) but a lousy bumper sticker slogan (click it or ticket)

And we lost one more freedom. Now we have police stopping cars for no reason but a seatbelt. Think about this. Every person in America can no longer leave their house and travel without breaking at least one law somewhere at some time. Go over 1 mile on the speed limit your a criminal, forget to sign your registration your a criminal, put your sticker on your plate wrong your a criminal, don't stop long enough at a stop sign even when no one else is coming your a criminal, forget the seatbelt watch out your now a threat to the public safety.

Now you want to criminalize smoking and eating to much. What are we going to have? Waiters ready to write tickets if you get the desert or have an after dinner smoke?

Freedom is not free sometimes we have to pay for our freedoms. All of our freedoms. Insurance prices are not high because people smoke or eat too much. They have been smoking and eating too much for 200 years in this country. The prices are high because the HMO's want to make max profits. They are high because the doctors, drug companies, and hospitals want max profits, they are high because the government is involved in the healthcare industry, they are high because the tax code favors the consumer to not see the true price of healthcare. The prices are high because the healthy people have decided they do not need to pay for the sick. What's next we leave our old alongside the road to die like the Native Americans used too because nursing homes cost too much?

Also remember this: At the same time we are getting less healthcare, company’s are having RECORD profits. They are doing this by cutting costs. They are trying to reduce costs further by pushing healthcare onto the government. I’m all for profit but profit at the expense of people’s health strikes me as immoral to a fault. You want cheaper healthcare and your freedom? Then pass a law so that ALL companies trading with us must provide health insurance to their workers. Give our companies tax breaks to provide full coverage to their employees. Educate the poor about nutrition, only allow food stamps for high protein/high nutritional foods. Get government out of healthcare (get rid of Medicare and Medicad). Shut down the VA hospital system and give veterans free healthcare for life by tax credits on their premiums. outsource the government functions to private insurance companies. Require the insurance companies to treat all claims no matter the cost. Give the insurance companies tax credits for care over a certain point. All these can be done with the tax code not with more government employees, more government powers, or more government intrusion.

You read that right. His mandatory health plan that will cover everyone also includes mandatory appointments, meaning if you are enrolled, and everyone has to, you MUST go to the doctor according to the plan.
