Bush in Anbar

He’s going to speak from Al Asad Air Base at 12:30 or so. We’ll probably have a few minutes of highlights. The choice of Anbar over Baghdad is symbolic, of course, to call attention to the security gains made there since last year. He’s in town for six hours but he’s got a full plate:
Despite what military officials describe as disagreements within the ranks of the Pentagon and U.S. military over when and how quickly to carry out any U.S. troop reduction in Iraq, the official said he believed senior U.S. military and defense leaders plan to give “collective” rather than independent recommendations to Bush. In addition to meetings with Maliki, Gates and other military officials also plan to meet with Iraqi leaders including President Jalal Talabani, Vice President Adel Abdul-Mahdi, Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, and Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih.
The most important meeting arguably is with none of the above. He’s going to meet with some of the local sheikhs who’ve helped tame the province by joining forces with the U.S. to encourage them to join the political process. It’s part of what Bush’s team calls “bottom-up reconciliation,” i.e. empowering the Sunnis who boycotted the elections last time and who have some actual sway on the ground over the population instead of the current crop of Sunni “leaders” who don’t have much sway over anyone. The trick is getting Maliki to reach out by sending reconstruction aid instead of hoarding it for the Shiites. Iyad Allawi could probably be counted on to do at least that; Maliki, not so much since he fears (not unreasonably) that the money will be used to buy weapons for the looming civil war. Expect him to do the same thing he’s done with the surge in Baghdad — give Bush all the assurances he needs that he’s on board with the plan and then quietly let the Shiites go about doing what they need to do to press their advantage.
There is some welcome and surprising news out today to coincide with the trip. Meanwhile, lots of photos of this photo op on the wires at Yahoo.
Update: Meanwhile, in Basra, Iraqis celebrate as Shiite goon squads replace the departing British.

It appears we are winning. What will the Surrendercrats do now?

Fabu. Now we can see what premature withdrawal of troops will do in Basra. I’m thinking massacre. I read a couple of the comments and one said “Bush can finish what he started”, blah, blah, blah. Good to see Iraqi lives are irrelevant when it comes to sticking it to the man (President Bush).
Maybe I’m being too cynical, but look at what happened in Gaza when Israel withdrew. Take away a strong, civilizing force and you end up with anarchy.

James Lewis has an interesting piece on this entitled “Britain’s Basra Bug-out and the Future of NATO.”
JiangxiDad on September 3, 2007 at 11:07 AM
Regardless of actual facts, the British withdrawal in will be played up by the Shiite militias as victory over the Brits, and by extension, the Americans.
I second mjk above… the situation in Basra is not a good one right now.

Iraq … and the whole middle east is a mess. Let Iran and Saudi Arabia duke it out. Let’s go home.

maybe he road trip to Baghdad and punch Katie in the face.
wryteacher on September 3, 2007 at 11:24 AM
Let the KosKids snarl, the troops are happy that their C of C is there, it sends a message to Maliki to shape up, and… it upstages Katie. What more can a girl want?

Re-read your comment. This simple sentence is at once profound and incendiary. It is true in all places and at all times. However, when that force is applied from outside, it is effectively challenged with the 20th century charge of racism/discrimination. So we’re back to the real problem, which as we already know is the infection of liberalism with its relativism, sanctimony, and guilt.

Way to go, Dubya!

A free Iraq, planting the seeds of a free Arab/Islamic world, would be the death blow to any credible Democrat foreign policy in the future (not that they’ve been credible for 50 years…), which is exactly why the American Left and its MSM so desperately want the Middle East to remain enslaved.

Bush has more guts than that entire gaggle of leftist Democrats in congress . Drive on Mr. president.
rplat on September 3, 2007 at 12:24 PM
One thing I appreciate about the President is that he displays physical courage.

This is the President Bush I love and admire!
JellyToast on September 3, 2007 at 12:43 PM
I bet Katie’s pissed. Isn’t she stuck in the Green Zone of Baghdad? Do you think she will go to Anbar?
Her mere presence would be a statement on how secure it is there – even without the presidential Secret Service escourt.
CrazyFool on September 3, 2007 at 12:43 PM
Ride cowboy, ride! This is how my president acts.
Mojave Mark on September 3, 2007 at 12:53 PM
I hope GWB does the same for the Afghan front.
He needs to remind the world that we are fighting not just local battles, and a global jihadist enemy.
And quote Patton:
“Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men.” (adding:) And women.
profitsbeard on September 3, 2007 at 1:01 PM
I paritcularly enjoyed the fake out of the press. They went West when Bush went East. They all land in Hawaii and realize that AF One wasn’t with them.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA I’ll bet some of those prima donnas were really miffed!! Loved to have been a fly on the wall when they found out!
JohnnyD on September 3, 2007 at 1:01 PM
You might want to read this for a little perspective on Basra before declaring it a mess. As usual, the story we are getting from the mass media is not exactly the full story of the facts on the ground.

Michael in MI,
What happened when the Brits handed over the police headquarters in Bashra last week to the “well equipt and well trained” Iraqis?

I hope that picture of him at the planning table makes the Left as nutty as when he was wearing the flight suit.
I love it when a president of this country acts presidential. Those pictures tell the sheet covered creeps, we are at war and that this President means business over there, unlike the people in on The Hill that wish to run away like it never happened.
Hening on September 3, 2007 at 1:34 PM
the current insanity is that the president was smiling in a picture
he’s the president, he’s surrounded by media, no **** he’ll smile
Defector01 on September 3, 2007 at 1:45 PM
The video of the speech is a must viewing.
Our troops love our C in C. They clearly believe in this mission which is good enough for me.
Pitter09 on September 3, 2007 at 1:58 PM
Is there a link to the video? I was cleaning house. You know, laboring on Labor Day. I love it when he fakes out the fops in the press corps. Heh.
I love President Bush. Always have, always will. He’s a Texas boy in every sense of the word.
Stormy70 on September 3, 2007 at 2:09 PM
What is the matter with you people? No one has questioned the timing or proclaimed that it is simply a photo-op! Fer shame! :D
I’ll give 1000-0 odds that, within 5 minutes, those statements could be found at one of the usual suspects sites.

More on Basra: Media Misreports UK Withdrawal from Basra
Where did I find that info you ask? Mrs. Greyhawk’s DAWN PATROL.

Michael in MI,
OK I read it, it didn’t answer my question. Who controls the PJCC now? Was the PJCC looted as was widely reported?
bnelson44 on September 3, 2007 at 3:51 PM
Curt has a great roundup and analysis at Flopping Aces. This is the kind of stuff I want to read. Full perspective and positive and looking to do what it takes to succeed in both the military effort and the media propaganda effort.

The Gettysburg of This War
Michael in MI on September 3, 2007 at 6:31 PM
So, why are combat troop deaths down? QandO has a great analysis: planning, experience and successful executing of the strategy is the answer.
And, oh yeah, read to the bottom and you see morale is high among the lowest of the enlisted men and women. A key sign of morale being high all around.

Good update added on British pullout, AP. Sad and that area is something to watch, if any continued reporting is published.

How I love the troops – when President Bush said “I’m proud to be your CinC” I cried. This man is so flawed and yet so full of steel at this time. Can’t help myself – it is obvious that the troops love him too and that he really, really supports them and what they do. May all of you, including your CinC, not serve in vain. May you be glorious in history.
Entelechy on September 4, 2007 at 12:19 AM
Who are you, Keith Olbermann? Sunni’s and Shia wouldn’t be fighting at all if it weren’t for foreign influence from Al-Qaeda and Iran. Civil war is a possibility but far from certain.
Here’s the reality: we are proceeding as expected in this war, and success is much more likely than any of the doom and gloom pundits like to believe. There will be a democracy in Iraq, the only question is how soon. Have faith.
