Maybe we could cut off all these Saudi (and other ME) student visas as a start. Crappy private schools cry foul, but who cares.

Shoudl we be looking at Muslim Profs?

One of the purposes of terror is to get us to uproot and degrade our lives. I remember when Bush said to go about our business as normal and people made fun of him, that shopping wouldn’t do anything to stop terrorism. Maybe not, but shopping does something to stop the effects of terrorism, which is just as important. So any steps we as a country take should keep that in mind. It’s fine if the FBI wants to monitor profs with suspected terror links. It’s quite another to decide to unnecessarily change policy to the detriment of America’s well-being. Tread carefully….

There’s a large Persian exile community in LA and here in the NYC area. Many are Jewish, in fact, but were pro-
Shah. They are, by and large, wealthy and well-educated. These may be who you are seeing.

That’s who I saw when I lived in L.A. However, when I was in grad school, a large number were recent immigrants, coming just for the education. (Many, for obvious reasons, stayed.) I remember being surprised at how Tehran was allowing so many of its students to study at the country that was the object of so much hatred for them. And that the U.S. was allowing them in.

The plot thickening even more. One charged with transporting explosives across state lines and the other charged with instructing how to use them for violence. I don’t think I’m going too far on a limb to suggest that by “violence”……

They’re coming out of respectable liberal universities where they have earned respectable degrees in respectable fields professors sympathetic to their cause.

Those from Muslim countries seem to be a growing presence in academia. Most elite California engineering schools (i.e., not USF) are stock full of Persians. They have been for some time, but I’m seeing more and more Muslim names in my field as time goes on. Given that my field doesn’t help either terror activities or nuclear weapon development, it seemed like a good sign to me, so it’s sad to see that the results aren’t always so good.

By the way, Egypt is about the only Arab country with a decent reputation in the academic world. It’s a country full of hatred for the West. So I’m not surprised to see that these folks are Egyptian.

Was gonna snark on that, but on second thought, I will have do some thinking on what it means to be assimilated in our society today.

They’re not poor and they’re not alienated; they’re middle class or better and assimilated. And they’re jihadis.
