A million thanks to the bete noire of Fox haters, the high priest of Olby critics, Johnny Dollar, for hooking us up with the clip. I dropped an A-bomb on KP yesterday so I don’t want to risk overkill, but I find it a tad ironic that she’s suddenly concerned about illegals who are posing “a violent danger against us.” She didn’t seem so concerned about the immigration status of violently dangerous illegals like Jose Carranza last week when she hosted H&C. But then, what do I know? I’m just a “nativist” racist.
Update (Bryan): Kirsten dropped a howler toward the end of that segment that just begs for a bashing. She said, and I quote:
“I don’t think the fact that Mexico has problems has anything to do with this.”
Oh really? The conservative estimate (which is really a low-end best guess) is that we have 12 million illegal aliens in the US, the vast majority of which are from Mexico. So, say, there are 9 million Mexican citizens living in the US illegally. Mexico’s total population is a little over 100 million. So the current low-end best guess we have is that about 8 or 9% of Mexico is actually living in the US illegally. That’s roughly twice the population of Maryland, which has 10 electoral votes.
That’s a lot of people. Why are they here?
Well, Kirsten would do well to read up on places like Nuevo Laredo. Google it, please. It’s home to a former Ford motors plant. It’s also the scene of a drug-driven civil war. That war has abated a bit lately, thanks in part to a cease-fire between a coupe of the cartels (and I’m sure the fact that the cartels could bring about a sort of peace that the government couldn’t must make the citizens there feel peachy), but it’s still dangerous. Here’s a taste of the way it was:
Detectives here suspected the cartels from the beginning, but it would be months before all the pieces came together.
On June 8, 2005, this is what they had: Two apparent executions in broad daylight, hours apart and across town from each other.
The day’s second victim, Cesario Antonio Carrera, 28, was lured out of a car dealership where his Mercedes was being worked on and shot several times at close range, police said.
It was done by Sinaloa Cartel thugs, sources familiar with the investigation said. Though unrelated to the first slaying, the accidental timing had officers speculating from Day 1 that something bigger was afoot.
More interesting circumstances marked the first killing, on the city’s northwest side. Police found Bruno Alberto Orozco Juarez, 24, a former Nuevo Laredo cop, shot dead — his shirt stained with blood, a gold chain with a Virgin of Guadalupe pendant around his neck and handcuffs locked on his right wrist.
Oh, wait. This all sounds like it happened somewhere in Baghdad, but it happened in Laredo, not Nuevo Laredo. The latter is in Mexico, the former is in Texas. The two cities are across the Rio Grande from one another. The drug cartel hitmen crossed into Texas to do their work, thanks in no small part to the undefended border. Their handiwork in Nuevo Laredo included street battles, assassinations, the works. If memory serves, the city had a police chief last less than a week from appointment to being gunned down on the streets.
After reading up on this drug war, which isn’t limited to the sister cities by the way, perhaps Kirsten could ask herself “If I was working at the Ford plant in Nuevo Laredo, would the violence there make me think about heading across the river, past Laredo, and somewhere where there are a few less AK-47s on the street?” Any sensible person would answer “Yes.” And because the border is undefended, nearly any sensible person from one side can find a path to the other. And because sensible people can do that, so can all sorts of other people, and not just from Mexico.
The fact that Mexico has problems, up and down its politics and economics, has EVERYTHING to do with the illegal immigration problem. Everything. It’s foolish to claim otherwise.

As in, Allahpundit bomb? If so, man that’s corny.
Bad Candy on August 30, 2007 at 7:40 PM
Democrats are indeed less moral than Republicans, but only because they have no shame about sexual proclivities. At least the Republicans try to hide their debauchery in the men’s room.
jihadwatcher on August 30, 2007 at 7:40 PM
Dropped the Big A bomb! LOL.
Powers is being dishonest. No one is trying to send the 8-year-old kid back to Mexico.
jaime on August 30, 2007 at 7:44 PM
Hanretty had an opportunity to body slam Kirsten at the end there, and she did okay, but it could have been better
But this line was priceless from KP:
It wasn’t a nasty comment KP, she was busting you for your appeals to emotion rather than law, reason, and logic.

A peace ambassador to Mexico. I’m on-board with that.
I had somehow missed the earlier Hannity clip where KP said ‘law-abiding citizens’. How is she not a Rudy fan again?! Ha.
I had to trouble to read that column of hers too. Ah sweet generalizations and arguments against strawmen. I especially like this paragraph:
Pardon my french, but WTF? If he is going to abuse kids, might as well do it here? The role of the government is to protect its citizens.
Spirit of 1776 on August 30, 2007 at 7:51 PM
I think this is a pretty common ploy women use. “You can’t hold me accountable for breaking the law because it would harm my child.” If that were true, we should have two separate sets of laws, those that can be enforced against women with children and those that can be enforced against men and, against women without children.
Maybe a separate justice system like we have for juveniles. The “women with children” justice system. The “I can lie, cheat, steal, and there’s nothing you can do because I have a child” justice system.
jaime on August 30, 2007 at 7:57 PM
Did anyone notice KP’s tone when she said, “we should be focusing our efforts on real criminals, oh yeah, she’s a convicted felon, but…?” That’s not an exact quote probably, but I found it disturbing that Arrelano’s status as a felon seemed something to blow off like, oh well, at least she’s not the worst felon of all time. How do felons become peace ambassadors? Why, just come to the U.S., the country of bleeding-hearts.
hollygolightly on August 30, 2007 at 7:59 PM
I think Hanretty has a point. Kirsten makes it sound like sending a child to Mexico is terrible. If Arellano had decided to take her son back with her to Mexico, would Kirsten be arguing child abuse for his mother making him go? I wish someone would ask KP that question. I’d love to her spin on that one.
eclark1849 on August 30, 2007 at 7:59 PM
I’m kinda warming up to this separate justice system that powers is proposing.
We could have a separate justice system for women with children, where they are immune from prosecution and then they could take the blame for all the crimes of their husbands, boyfriends, lovers, and male neighbors for a fee to support themselves. Anytime a man commits a crime, she could assume blame (the “I did it defense”) knowing she was immune from prosecution and then benefit finacially from the proceeds of the crime to support her child. It would be a system that would benefit most lawbreakers, men and women alike.
We could name it the Powers Justice System for Women With Children!
jaime on August 30, 2007 at 8:11 PM
Why exactly is Kirsten Powers viewed as a sane Democrat? I guess I came to Hot Air a little late to understand how that whole theory got started.
Hot? Yep, sure, absolutely. Sane (politically at least)? I don’t quite see it.
Drew on August 30, 2007 at 8:18 PM
So did KP get a new job as hack spokesman somewhere? Her intellectual consistency and honesty is gone. I mean, history, vapor…call her Kirstin Morones, open border advocate. It has nothing to do with Mexico having problems? It doesn’t? Then wtf are they all doing here? I’m also curious how she felt about Elian Gonzalez being hauled back to his country basically at gunpoint.
Thumbs up for Hanretty. She dropped the hammer pretty good. I was disappointed that they gave KP the last word though after she did the ‘Colmes talkover’ when Hanretty was putting the wood to KP’s comments.
austinnelly on August 30, 2007 at 8:22 PM
Look at posts before the election.
I noticed some “sane” democrats I know online did the same thing after the elections. Became psychos right after it was over. It was a startling phenomenon.
lorien1973 on August 30, 2007 at 8:22 PM

Texyank on August 30, 2007 at 8:36 PM
So it is abusive for this illegal immigrant to take her anchor child back to Mexico because he is used to living here but it is not abusive for Mexicans to bring their children who are used to living in Mexico to the United States. That’s makes a lot of sense.

Still my favorite KP moment was when she was substituting for Colmes and Ann Coulter retorted something to the effect of, “I know you’re trying to imitate Alan Colmes, but at some point he does let me answer.”
wryteacher on August 30, 2007 at 8:53 PM
She’s taking the early-20th-century approach to mass immigration. I told her that that doesn’t work in a multiculturalist system but there’s no reaching her.
Allahpundit on August 30, 2007 at 8:54 PM
And you were such a cute couple, too.

Too bad. Tell her to go take the Ellis Island tour. She might see that back then they had rules and actually tried to enforce them.
I sypmathize with how you feel though, AP. I had a lot of respect for KP until recently. I really am curious…why the sudden change.
BacaDog on August 30, 2007 at 9:05 PM
Heh. Proof positive self-affirmation works.
Me too actually. But all women are affected by ‘the cycle’ though, and it is that time in the election cycle for less rationality, more emotion.
Spirit of 1776 on August 30, 2007 at 9:10 PM
Stealing SS#’s is economic terrorism. Getting ones identity back is easier said than done.
Kini on August 30, 2007 at 9:14 PM
Heh. Maybe.
I just never took her for a hack in the realm of Colmes, Shwartz or even Fleming. She never seemed to have the need to take that tact. I guess “call ‘em as you see ‘em” makes you no friends on either side.
So, maybe she chose to make some friends.
BacaDog on August 30, 2007 at 9:15 PM
No. AP used it first. I loved it though. It was the best name ever, cuz it fit so perfectly.
lorien1973 on August 30, 2007 at 9:15 PM
That’s funny, after the election I took a hard right turn (which drives many friends and family insane), but I digress.
I will somewhat argue the emotional side here. The kid’s not an “anchor baby”, it’s a child. Granted, Arellano is a despicable publicity whore slash self-made martyr, but the one salient point is that the boy is an American citizen now, no matter how much we may not like it; it’s not his fault his mother is a criminal. It would be absolutely the wrong example to grant some legal status to Elvira. It would also be wrong to keep him here without his mother.
What to do?
SouthernDem on August 30, 2007 at 9:19 PM
Well, he is going to Mexico this weekend.
Bryan on August 30, 2007 at 9:21 PM
This is the moral dilemma about anchor babies. If a baby is born to an illegal immigrant. What to do. The mother’s native country will not consider it a citizen of their country so deporting both is very difficult. So ending “native born citizenship” really isn’t the answer. It just creates others.
lorien1973 on August 30, 2007 at 9:22 PM
I see what you’re saying, but really, throwing around the “terrorism” word really takes away from the true meaning and impact of the word. They’re not terrorists, but they are criminals.
SouthernDem on August 30, 2007 at 9:22 PM
I love it too. Whenever I see her on TV (rarely, thank goodness) , I tell my dad “Oh look, It’s Chesty McTalkingpoints” and we break out in laughter.
VinceP1974 on August 30, 2007 at 9:22 PM
Me neither. Especially Schwartz. Ugh.
Spirit of 1776 on August 30, 2007 at 9:23 PM
At least he can walk down the streets safely.
SouthernDem on August 30, 2007 at 9:23 PM
That is the part I do not get. Is it not obvious that nation states are drawn on cultural lines? Is the break up of the Balkans not clear evidence of that? There is only room for one culture per nation, period. In that sense multiculturalism is not just annoying but a threat, Kosovo being the end game of multiculturalism.
Of course the left will then whine about how assimilated Hispanics are and multiculturalism is a good thing. A simple response is prove it. Every liberal I hit with that is left slack jawwed and stuttering.
Theworldisnotenough on August 30, 2007 at 9:24 PM
As long as he’s not going to Nuevo Laredo, anyway.

KP, quite simply, is part of the problem. I couldn’t care less about why or when she magically “changed”, but she is pretty worthless in my book…the human equivalent of spilt milk.
PBoilermaker on August 30, 2007 at 9:32 PM

KP is really a well-mannered/controlled passive aggressive. Today she snapped and Ms. Hanretty ‘killed’ her by completely ignoring the assumed aggressive “Why don’t you just stick to the facts and not always make little nasty comments?”. It was almost hard to watch, but, not really.
Yesterday Ms. H stomped KP when she asked her about her “little” firestorm creations. All KP could do in response to the always in control Ms. H was make faces.
This series is much more substantive, and much sweeter than Donald Trump versus R. O’Donnell. The one who probably doesn’t sleep at night over it is KP.
Entelechy on August 30, 2007 at 9:36 PM
Just my opinion, nothing more. I know you like her and while I respect you, I just don’t see how she improves the level of discourse. Given the position she is in, she isn’t simply a good girl gone bad, she is part of what is dragging this country down.
PBoilermaker on August 30, 2007 at 9:39 PM
THere is a better way to test this. If Elvira Arellano was a citizen of the United Kingdom or Germany and was deported without her 8 year old U.S. citizen son, I don’t think we would feel too bad about it. So we would be subjecting him to a future of better beer and soccer but worse dental care or toilets with that weird shelf.
THe fact that a kid has to pull up their roots because a parent gets a new job in another state is hard on them, but people do it all the time and that difficulty should not be grounds for U.S. policy on the migration of citizen labor within the U.S. So why should it affect our immigration law, especially when the situation is a result of Ms. Arellano breaking the law?
jaychandra on August 30, 2007 at 9:41 PM
Agreed, provisionally. By KP’s standards, a criminal.
By anyone who’s gone through that nightmare, a terrorist.
It seems the meaning can be interpreted depending on your political affiliation.

Kristin has always struck me as a serial liar. I’ve never believed that she was a Democratic “moderate” (whatever that means). Her positions change with such regularity that a thoughtful person is left to believe that she has no core beliefs.
All that’s left then is cynical political spin.
Perhaps that’s why she’s so at home in the Clinton camp.

Since its coming up to election time,we have “Family Values”.
KP claims that Larry Craig bashed Clinton, calling Bill
“A Nasty Naughty Bad Boy” libspeak there the same.
Talking Point libspeak,”I think that you know, lay this to rest, that the idea Democrats are less moral than Republicans, everbody is flawed”.
Which translates, boy us in the media i hope this has enough traction till next week.
And were no less moral than the Republicans.
And KP’s cheap shot”He was cheating on his wife”
And “he has long been accused of this”.
Final libspeak translation,Larry Craig(allegedly)screwed around on his wife, just like Bill Clinton(Fact)screwed around on his wife.
Since when has everybody known(Fact or Fiction),that Larry Craig has been accused of this for a long time.
So who the H!ll has been watching Mr.Craig!
So Liberals can’t win in the arena of ideas,so
KP asserts there is no difference in either party.!

syndromelie?Speakup on August 30, 2007 at 10:44 PM
When I first became aware of Kirsten here and on FOX, I viewed her as being a great example of the young idealistic liberal in the process of becoming a mature, rational conservative. I was excited for her, and proud of her honesty and courage in “coming out” as a pro-lifer. She was starting to make so much sense that I thought that it was only a matter of time before she would switch political parties. And I was proud of Michelle for befriending her and being such a great influence.
I suppose my experiences with new conversions at church colored my perceptions in this regard. I thought that the Hot Air community was “loving her in”, and showing her that conservatives are not bigots and haters and hypocrits; that we are good people who want the best for this country. But she seemed receptive and honest, and I was glad that if she decided to “convert”, she had friends like us. I remember warm comments about her here in the past - alot of folks here were happy that she seemed to be “coming around”.
But for whatever reason she has now taken political postions that she has been unable to defend intellectually. I don’t view this as her “showing her true colors”. Having viewed her as a person making tenative steps towards conservatism, I look at this as an error in judgement.
She took the wrong side in the immigration argument. Okay, well if I was a young liberal slowly moving toward the Right, and so many “Republicans” were for amnesty, it wouldn’t be hard for me to be for amnesty at all. I could be wrong - it could be calculated - it just doesn’t seem that way.
I’m sure you guys will correct me where I’m wrong - I am not fully aware of exactly what she said in regards to sanctuary cities and undocumented felons. But having made the mistake, she probably talked herself into a corner and came off looking bad in the attempt to rationalize her irrational position.
I don’t like to see everyone pile on her. Some of the comments in the last two days have been very mean-spirited and over -the top. I hate to think that she has read some of the garbage that has been said about her in this blog. We are better than that - or we should be. I thought she was Michelle’s friend, and a friend to this blog. You can argue with a friend, you can make fun of them when they screw up, but if you totally crap on her the way we have, taking personal shots at her appearance and everything…
I can imagine her saying “…well, screw them. That’s the last time I dialog with conservatives.” She probably drew fire from the left for being on FOX and stating her position on abortion. Now she has invoked our derision for taking the wrong view on certain issues. If I was her I would be tempted to take the path of least resistance - which for her as a Dem would be a turn leftward. I mean, why be honest and have no allies, when I can just show up and say the talking points and at least be accepted by one side or the other. She probably has more integrity than that - and hopefully she takes blog comments with a grain of salt.
I was just hoping that we could good-naturedly rib her for having a ridiculous liberal relapse, and continue to encourage her towards conservatism.

Ahh yeah, just what I asked for. Keep it coming, Fox.
But I think we can do better, ladies. I’m thinking more false smiles. Perhaps some attacks on each other’s appearance? Be creative.

The phone is expensive but it looks like the machine is the come on, from what I’ve been told, it’s the service bill that’s really staggering.

Yes, some of them have been very mean-spirited, and yes, she has noticed. And needless to say, the very last thing anyone should be knocking Powers for is her looks.

As Tom Delay said to Matt Lauer today,
“There are scandals that need to be addressed. Republicans address them, Democrats re-elect them. “

For the record, I endorse her looks without reservation. My comment above was a suggestion for Hanrety, to serve the honorable purpose of spicing up the carnival that is cable news.
But, because it’s the mood I’m in, I would also like to offer the argument, for what very very little it’s worth, that the ludicrous mean-spiritedness of comments in pretty much every single last blog on the internet ought to be those comments’ own self-refutation. That’s easy for me to say, I know, but let all targets of blog-comment vitriol bear in mind that blog comments select for absurd, pathetic, meaningless nastiness. Look for something offered in good faith if you must, but we don’t have to respect the way the internet’s anonymity encourages all the jackassess to go wild. So try not to let it get to you.
Alex K on August 30, 2007 at 11:05 PM
Good. Give her a handle AP and let her come here and explain to us why the sudden change.
Geez, KP. We take no prisoners here, whether GOP or Dem. I think many of us thought you were a breath of fresh air from the liberal side, given your past tendency to call out an idiot from either side.
Now, you don’t. What’s the deal?
BacaDog on August 30, 2007 at 11:09 PM
She’s got a comment account and a blog of her own. If she wants to sound off, she’s capable. I think she probably doesn’t want to be ganged up on.
Allahpundit on August 30, 2007 at 11:11 PM
Nicely done. Save for the line about MM befriending her, which I think is just a bit of the ‘ole condescending, I agree with you. She has had a history of intelligent and respectable viewpoints.
And I agree comments degrading her looks are stupid, but 1/2 of the comments in previous posts were equally stupid, in line with - ‘I didn’t hear what she said (distracted by fill-in-the-blank)’. I don’t subscribe to the view that your looks determine the weight I should give to your intellectual argument.
Spirit of 1776 on August 30, 2007 at 11:13 PM
She shows up on TV all the time. It would be ludicrous to think that her looks will not be the topic of some conversations. If she weren’t good looking, how much ink would have been devoted to her, here? If she weren’t good looking, how often would we see her on TV?
Live by the sword, die by the sword.
progressoverpeace on August 30, 2007 at 11:19 PM
Seriously, Allah, I’m amazed Powers would still give you the time of day after the comments that are routinely made about her on HotAir. You control the tone and also maintain the power to delete posts. So, the buck stops with you.
Blake on August 30, 2007 at 11:23 PM
It’s off topic and gratuitously mean, not to mention absurd. It’s a fortunate man or woman indeed who’s so attractive that they can afford to take digs at Powers’s looks. Just keep away from that subject. It’s needlessly hurtful.
Allahpundit on August 30, 2007 at 11:23 PM
Where are all of these comments referencing KP’s looks? Were they removed? I see a lot of people taking her to task on her position, not her looks.
Granted, I have not kept up with other recent KP threads, but what am I missing?
