Video: Hanretty gets snippy with Powers over Giuliani

Interesting. It’s unusual in my Fox-viewing experience to see Hanretty get as personal as she does at the end here. We all deal with the realization that KP’s a Rudy-bashing water-carrier for the Clinton campaign in our own way, I guess. What happened, “Big Story” producers? Couldn’t get Howard Wolfson to come on and debate Hanretty instead?
A few things to watch out for, the first being the sublime irony of a Clinton supporter criticizing another politician for not taking the threat of terrorism seriously enough. KP naturally neglects to mention that we don’t know for sure how many hours Rudy spent at Ground Zero the first week, when it was most toxic, since there are no extant records of his schedule until 9/17/01. Certainly it was far less than many of the workers, a fact which Rudy himself acknowledged the day after suggesting otherwise and which KP also naturally ignores. That’s okay; just flag it for now, because inevitably during this campaign Hillary’s going to say something moronic which she’ll then try to climb down from and O’Reilly’s going to ask her biggest fan about it and she’s going to tell him, without missing a beat, “She clarified it later, didn’t she?” That’s when I pounce.
Since we’re playing the Who Cares Most? game, remind me: who were the two senators from New York on 9/11? One was Chuck Schumer but I can’t recall the other. Certainly one might expect them to be putting in some serious face time down at the ruins in those first awful days and weeks afterwards; how curious that the media hasn’t inquired for comparison purposes. Granted, there was important legislative business to attend to in Washington at the time (the Patriot Act first and foremost), but Rudy also had important business to attend to and important business doesn’t seem to deter senators who are running for president from flying all over the country and back to do moronic, gladhanding, what-ya-eatin’ diner visits between votes on the Senate floor. So please, let’s do have those numbers and really put Rudy to shame with the sheer overwhelming Caringness of Chuck Schumer and that other senator whose name I just can’t remember.
Exit question: This has to be an urban legend, but I’ve heard it mentioned many times before and Richard Miniter cites it as fact in this Opinion Journal piece from 2003. Surely, surely, it can’t be true that Billy Jeff Clinton, healer of the world’s pain, didn’t visit the World Trade Center after the 1993 bombing, can it? And, follow up to that: If it is true, KP couldn’t possibly know that or, being a Clinton supporter, she would have melted from hypocritical shame during this segment, right? And, follow up to that: If it is true and she did know, where do I go to get a pair of balls as big as hers?

I think Hanretty Spanks Powers would have been a better tease.
Blake on August 29, 2007 at 6:54 PM
It’s astonishing that anyone would complain about Rudy speaking at any 9.11 memorial event.
Dang KP is quite the cranky here. Does her shilling for Hillary extend to a genuine dislike of Rudy?
Spirit of 1776 on August 29, 2007 at 6:55 PM
Yes, she genuinely dislikes Rudy.

Kirsten shot first.

Wow AP, you really have soured on KP huh?
conservnut on August 29, 2007 at 6:58 PM
I’m not sure where Slick was during the first WTC, but I thought it was established fact he never showed up there afterward. He didn’t even have an AG in place at the time (think Kimba Wood), and the Waco siege began two days later.
I do remember the hapless Dinkins and his fireman hat, though.
BTW, I love Karen Hanretty. More of her, please.
Speaking of The Pantsuit, certain Dems are running fast from fugitive financier Norman Hsu, including one Al Franken.
Now, do any Dem candidates have the guts to call her on this?.

Giuliani, in Detroit, wants Chertoff for top attorney
- also -
“Last week, on a little-listened to radio show, Giuliani told the arrogant pseudo-conservative host whose name will never be mentioned on this site that he has the utmost confidence in Michael “Serpenthead” Chertoff, the current Homeland Security chief. He lauded Chertoff endlessly and said that Chertoff had been his deputy as U.S. Attorney in New York.
That’s bad news–very disturbing. Would Giuliani re-appoint Chertoff to head up DHS (along with his gang of incompetent cronies, like The ICE Princess)? Who knows? Would Giuliani appoint Chertoff to some other important national security role in a Giuliani Administration? Giuliani must be pressed on this issue because we cannot afford to have the incompetent, politically correct (to extremist Muslims) Chertoff in any position in any future administration. He’s been a complete failure. And it’s disturbing, given this track record, to hear Giuliani endorse Mr. “Gut Feeling’s” atrocious performance.”

Am I wrong, though? If I’m wrong, correct me.
Yes, I’ve soured her. Not because I disagree with her positions but because it irritates the hell out of me that she’s basically become a waterboy for the Clinton campaign and the DLC. She’s criticized the nutroots plenty in the past, but now, suddenly, with the detente between Harold Ford and Kos, you can’t squeeze an unkind word out of her about Hillary trying to woo the left. I don’t trust her to give an honest opinion anymore, and when she does give one, she ends up calling illegal aliens “law-abiding citizens.” Super.

Saucer of milk. Table 2. Reow (claw swipe).
VolMagic on August 29, 2007 at 7:06 PM
Boy, KP does have a hot button on Rudy huh? But that is pretty shameless of her to harp on month old and water under the bridge talking points like his reference to time spent at ground zero. She used to be better than that.
I understand now Allah, damaged goods dude. Best to leave her behind.

Liberal women – can’t live with them, can’t kill them.
steveegg on August 29, 2007 at 7:08 PM
This was a really strong post, Allah, one of your classic high-energy, sustained-sarcasm pieces.
You’ve got to suffer for your art, and I’m glad to see the KP situation has facilitated that. Bleed for us, my friend.
Alex K on August 29, 2007 at 7:14 PM
Ha, thanks dude. Yeah, it sounds like a line but it’s honestly true that the only reason I get so worked up about Powers is that I really respect(ed?) her and I’m so disappointed. If Jane Fleming or some random lefty had pulled this, the post would have been three lines long followed by “here’s the vid.”
Allahpundit on August 29, 2007 at 7:16 PM
Question: Since the talking point is the Mayor didn’t provide the firefighters with proper radios, who controls the budget of the city of new york?
Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on August 29, 2007 at 7:18 PM
I like that screencap. A lot.
BadgerHawk on August 29, 2007 at 7:19 PM
I agree – KP struck first and whiffed with the left hook and Hanretty smacked her upside the head with a nice right cross.
Score that round for Karen on points, but no knockdown.
Just like the cops, firefighter rank-and-file types are
FAR LESS whacked out to left field than their union goon leaders.
Public Employee union leaders are uniformly among the most disgraceful performers on the political stage.
thats an f’ing fact, Karen pointed that out, and KP can spin try it anyway she wants but there it is.
Mike D. on August 29, 2007 at 7:22 PM
Eh, I thought the dazed look on KP’s face at the end was pretty good.
Editor on August 29, 2007 at 7:23 PM
KP has only had a few moments of lucidity and quickly regained her loyalties to the DNC. When she started showing a tad more clear thinking I assumed our own Ms. Malkin had worked some kind of magic and it’d pass. It did. Always question and dissect when someone looks so worried and compassssssionate. They are about to pick your pocket, for a cause.
Hanretty I could dislike because she’s so danged pretty, smart, composed, and has never wavered from her convictions. On the other hand, in my next life I hope to have those same qualities. In lieu of that, at least hope to have her long legs.
24K lady on August 29, 2007 at 7:27 PM
The bit at the end, captured in the screenshot on the front page, is so great that I really hope they pit these two against each other more in the future.
And without Banderas, as it’s hard to concentrate on anything else when she’s around.
Alex K on August 29, 2007 at 7:28 PM
Thanks for posting the video. I’d only caught the last couple seconds of it on the teevee and KP looked really po’d after Karen’s last comment.
Connie on August 29, 2007 at 7:31 PM
Put me on against her. See how she looks then.
Allahpundit on August 29, 2007 at 7:34 PM
AlexK, Banderas has/had her own agenda. Namely, haven’t you noticed how bent she got when illegal aliens are marching the streets of America carrying flags of Mexico and people were outraged? Can’t remember now who she lit into months ago when that spectacle was unfolding. She was as bad as Geraldomundo. Perhaps someone reminded her she had to appear non-biased because she cooled her heels on that subject.
24K lady on August 29, 2007 at 7:34 PM
Enough with the KP stuff already. Yes she’s very pretty. She’s also a slime who says stuff that will hurt my country.
I don’t watch Fox when she or Geraldo are on. Think I’ll skip her here too.

eagles5 on August 29, 2007 at 7:40 PM
It was great to see Karen Hanretty tell it like it is. The fire fighters union is going after Rudy strictly for political reasons. We are coming into an election and the fire fighters union want a Democrat to win. So what do they do? They attack the leading Republican Candidate. The fire fighters union had no problem with Rudy attending 9/11 ceremonies in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. But here we are close to an election and the fire fighters union, who have always endorsed a Democrat for President, want to embarrass the leading Republican Candidate the best they can. Kirsten was angry because Karen exposed her. Good for Karen.
SoulGlo on August 29, 2007 at 7:41 PM
Worst of it is, she is just going to get worse the closer it gets to the election. And it’s already pretty bad.
Spirit of 1776 on August 29, 2007 at 7:41 PM
It really is. I purposely don’t watch her segments on Monday night with MM or on Sunday on Banderas’s show anymore because I know she’s going to annoy me and then I’m going to annoy you guys with another rant. I can’t help catching her on Gibson from time to time, though, which is why posts like these still happen.
Allahpundit on August 29, 2007 at 7:44 PM
Afghanistan has some they aren’t using, as long as you don’t mind having the Islamic profession of faith inscribed on them.
This phony controversy about Giuliani visiting the memorial is just like when Bush visited the disaster sites in the South: He went to Florida too soon, so it was for political purposes. He went to New Orleans too late, so he was insensitive.
Ignored in the debate is the fact that no one’s life in improved or worsened by any particular politician’s appearance at such a site.
Nosferightu on August 29, 2007 at 7:44 PM
Just let us know when to watch.
Are you going to wear a bag over your head, you know, “Unknown Pundit”-style?
baldilocks on August 29, 2007 at 7:45 PM
No, I missed that. That’s too bad. Ah well, pretty much all the hosts at Fox and most of the regular pundits are quite Bush-esque on immigration. The producers too, judging from the low, ginger coverage the Senate bill got, as Kaus described. Hannity was against the bill but he’s quite a drip on the issue otherwise. There’s Malkin, of course, but that’s it.
Anyway, I just can’t concentrate on stuff like that when Julia is on.
Alex K on August 29, 2007 at 7:46 PM
Heh. I don’t mind your rants, in Budweiser terms: True.
It’s just disappointing and that’s one of the main reasons I hardly ever watch the news anymore; it’s just a fount of talking points and not intelligent honest discussion. Such a pity. I had hoped KP would turn out different.
Spirit of 1776 on August 29, 2007 at 7:51 PM
OOO! Ms. Henretty had a little side-to-side head movement underscoring “…and you’re doing a fine job of it today.”
I’m sorry about your disillusionment, AP. :::sisterly hug:::
baldilocks on August 29, 2007 at 7:54 PM
That’d rock. She wouldn’t get a word in edgewise.
Tanya on August 29, 2007 at 7:54 PM
This is all academic anyway. Short of the Rep. candidate caught tapping his feet in some restroom a few nights before election day, there is NO way H.Clinton, Obama or Edwards could possibly win.
Repeat. NO WAY. Each is fatally flawed. If you think Americans are a-holes when they vote for President, you’re wrong.
The US may be far gone, and far from the country you grew up in, but it’s not lost yet. No f’in way. I know, I live here.

My brief moment of liking Kirsten Powers, based on third party reviews, is over.
Christoph on August 29, 2007 at 8:00 PM
That was AWESOME! And dead on. The whole interview had nothing to do with the anniversary of 9/11. The whole thing until the end was KP bashing Rudy. That’s part of her job in the Clinton machine. They can only talk bad about the opponent and have nothing substantive to add to the debate. They are so focused on ‘we’re good because the other guys are bad’, they don’t even realize what they are doing.
Great Screen cap, great ending and perfect to call out KP like that. I don’t know much about this Hanretty person, but that was quick, stinging, accurate, and appropriate.
ding ding.

Now I know I will probably be attacked for my opinion, I seem to be the resident punching bag as the NY Jewish Republican accused of being a Liberal because I had the misfortune of being born in Manhattan, but here it goes anyway. KP is right-on and didn’t I hear her once say that she resides in Brooklyn and lived here while Rudy was the King?
And better than what? Her comments were mild but very honest.
I know where you all come from he’s really someone to behold; a big guy with a big jar of snake oil to sell wearing a big leadership cape over on his shoulders. I watched a large heavy-set woman from Alabama sob uncontrollably gasping for breath the day Rudy signed his book at the Republican Marketplace over at the hotel during the last election season. She was beside herself because Rudy touched her hand, my cousin and I were very amused to say the least. She kept repeating how he touched her hand and how she could never wash it. We were over at the table with the vendor who was selling the minature flip flops debasing John Kerry and waiting for the line to form to have our books signed by Karen Hughes, who was up after Rudy. It was really something to behold, I can tell you that he probably never had that effect on any Republican women up here – it’s more like he walked into the snake pit of rigerous honesty and cannot find the trap door to exit.
My parents know him and support him, but they are older. And he is really not the social Conservative by any stretch. My parents are NY Republicans, they are fiscally Conservative like Rudy, but socially? No way. Rudy hates guns, I doubt he has ever fired one.
No big shiny kool-aid fountains pumping for Rudy up here….

The KP Allahpundit saga… I actually really enjoy it, brings a Days of Our Lives quality to a poltical blog.
Translation:
I’m sorry baby. You forced my hand. I know I have been rough, but I feel betrayed. Help me understand where you are coming from, why the non sequitors? To please the DLC? If they’re your friends because you are an mouthpiece then they aren’t your friends. Come to Allahpundit…
Oh and if Kirsten did not have that strong jaw, fair skin and those gorgeous eyes you would not get worked up. Admit it. Her ideological leanings alone aren’t enough to spark the razor edged snark you’ve thrown her way recently. You did get your hopes up and she was on the brink of admitting the truth about Democratic leadership. That I understand, breaks my heart too.

Of course, MM would probably fire me.

KP’s beautiful and hot and all that, plus…on the nutbar scale I don’t think she’s that bad. But Karen is a WOMAN, a great looking WOMAN, not a little kid looking fluffernutter.
One of my favorites

Here’s another reason to sour on her. She has an absurd piece in today’s USA Today calling all of us who are for border enforcement and oppose illegals in our midst, “nativists.” If you read the article, that includes Michelle, thought she doesn’t have the guts to say it. She is no moderate Democrat. Just one who looks and sounds moderate while delivering the same message as the rest of the bunch.

KP played the absolute moral authority card here; essentially she says that since the people criticizing Rudi are family members of firefighters killed that terrible day they must be in the right. Irrelevant, Kirsten.
Oh, but I still think she’s soooooooooo pretty! See, when you’re smitten as I am, you have to overlook things!

I live in NY. Lived in the city when Giuliani was mayor. I have strong opinions about him based on that experience.
I read your comment several times. I really don’t understand it or get your point.
Yeah, he’s not too conservative. Everybody knows that.
Yeah, people in NYC of your age and KP’s age don’t really know him as Mayor. Most people in NYC have been there for only a few years. It’s no surprise that he’s not considered the messiah there.

Kirsten Powers always makes me cringe a bit at Fox’s “fair and balanced” approach. She is such a typical liberal: angry, humorless, disingenuous, and always, always, always bitterly partisan no matter what the issue. Watching her, you just know she’d exploit anyone anywhere to score political points for the dems. She’s a soulless, mechanical figure with a heart of stone. What’s worse, like Ellis Hennigan on the same network, it’s painfully obvious that she doesn’t believe anything she actually says — that she really doesn’t really believe in anything at all except a scorched earth approach to political dialogue if it benefits the democrats. Honestly, if we woke up tomorrow and democrats became the pro-life party, she’d be right there the next day calling Republicans baby killers. Fortunately, Powers and her opinions are utterly inconsequential.

Someone made a good point regarding Rudy’s popularity in NYC. A lot of todays New Yorkers have only been in this city for a few years. They have no memory of the Dinkins, Koch, Beame, and Lindsay years when crime was rampant, homeless people ruled the streets, graffitti on the subways was the norm, public services were eroding, infrastructure was collapsing, businesses were pulling out. Now they live in multimillion dollar co-ops, drink their frappuccino’s and mouth leftist nonsense.

Say what you will, I always get mesmerized whenever I listen to Kirsten. I disagree with most of what she says, but I LOVE hearing her say it!! She interviewed me at CPAC and was the most gracious of anyone I met there. ( Of course many folks I met there were hungover college kids screaming at me.)
I think the Republican strategist was saying that “fireman’s unions” were complaining about Rudy, not the individual firefighters themselves. Any good Republican knows that unions beliefs can be very different from some of its members.
KP interpreted this as a swipe at individual firemen who were at Ground Zero. That was the source of her misunderstanding.
P.S. I shook Rudy’s hand when I met him last year, and my arthritis went away. (Just thought y’all should know.)

Touche. That’s one way to look at it.

I have a feeling KP doesn’t get many second dates…

Not to pick on you specifically, but comments of this type are very condescending to her. She’s not anyone’s girlfriend here. She has her own personal life. She’s a professional woman. It’s not her job to please everyone.

Yuck

No problems = no friends, eh? That’s an empty life.

A few months ago, I got into an argument with a NYC Firefighter about Rudy. He claimed that Rudy did nothing at Ground Zero as the buildings fell, but actually ran away. When he returned later, Rudy was not giving guidance, but asking people what he should do. The FF also made a strange statement that Rudy did not telephone him directly to report to duty!
I said to the FF: “Well, as far as I know, everyone praised Rudy for leadership, and even his opponents.”
I then asked the FF if he is upset because Rudy did not give the FF Union whatever they wanted.
Did HE get upset. Yes, I think the criticism against Rudy by the FDNY is political. But, I must confess that Rudy should have appointed a Fire Commissioner from within the FDNY, and not that guy who was commissioner of Child Services.

My parents hated Lindsay, said he was criminal. Bella Abzug was not really someone they thought too much about or have even mentioned to my recollection.
Ahem, that’s a bit of a stretch….LOL. If you don’t like her, why not ignore her rather than taking her inventory.

OK, getting away from the KP/AP love affair gone bad thing for a moment and back to the subject matter of the piece.
Expect Move On with the help of the firefighters union to begin trotting our 9/11 versions of mother Shehan more and more. Playing the absolute moral authority card and daring anyone to claim they are political. KP has already been prepared to deal with this apparently.

He always did these types of things. Look at Bernard Kerik, who was nothing more than a cronie.

Rudy was at war with the Unions. City unions had deals that made the auto workers look like indentured servants. Most city workers were without contracts for most of Rudy’s term. One of the ways in which he reformed NYC was to challenge the Unions who were always threatening to strike/slowdown etc. and cause chaos. Everyone seemed to hate/respect/admire him at the same time. By the time he left, it wasn’t a moment too soon for most people here.
But…, if your main issue is terrorism, Rudy’s your authoritarian pit-bull. Be forewarned, if you choose Rudy, you’ll get fireworks.
JiangxiDad on August 29, 2007 at 9:36 PM
Rudy is not my favorite candidate. Far too northern RINO for my tastes. But of course, if he gets the nomination I will be pulling the lever for him.
And Fireworks? Exactly the only thing I really like about him.
conservnut on August 29, 2007 at 9:41 PM
Yeah, they’re planning to swift boat Rudy. Two problems: They’re too early, and for swiftboating to work, it has to be true.

Aaa, I have no friends!
