Carrey is off his rocker. He bothers to chose this as his pet cause, shall we say, his cause célèbre, when there are much bigger fish, much more pressing fish, to fry. What about the oppression and murder in the islamic world? What about the teenage girls being given death sentences in Saudi Arabia? What of the oppression and death sentences handed out to rape victims in Iran, or UAE, or Pakistan?

Of course, for a liberal, he won’t go near that. That would mean criticizing a culture. That is a no-no. So he chooses a safe target, a “military regime”, ostensibly, a right-wing military regime, so he chooses obscure Burma to solidify his liberal leftist credentials amongst his peers.

Wow! I’m very suprised by the tone of so many posts here. Granted, I’m one of the first in line to be skeptical of celebs crying out for something, but this seems to be heart felt. This is the first I’ve heard of this so I don’t have reason to doubt his sincerity.
Have we become that calous (sp) that we would mock his hair for bringing a notable cause too the forfront?
Please tell me if I’m wrong.

I’ve been to most every country in East and Southeast Asia and Myanmar is the only one where there was a palpable sense of oppresion and tyranny. On one occasion, I was hiking with a local guide and when the subject of the junta came up, he actually looked around in all directions before speaking, even though we were walking alone in the woods.

You don’t have to be a raging leftist to understand that Aung San Suu Kyi is an amazing woman, a woman whom the entire world should be rallying to support. What she’s gone through is beyond despicible. It’s evil. I applaud anyone who tries to keep her name in the headlines. God bless her.

Millions of oppressed, tortured, mistreated women in Iraq and you hear Hollywood bashing our troops and President who have freed said women to vote, pursue careers, and live as human beings again.

One woman jailed and we are all supposed to rally for her? Geeezzzz.

Do not get me wrong, what he is speaking of is horrendous to say the least. It would just be real nice for Hollywood to get behind our troops like the days of old. But then, Bob Hope did have class now didn’t he? Sadly, no-class Sean Penn and the even less palatable Bill Mahr is more representative of Hollywood these days.

I hate when funny people have to show that they can be serious. A true sign of what geniuses old time comedians were has to do that they stayed comedians and made America laugh. Todays comedian has to portray a mass murderer, tragic figure or depressing character to scratch some self centered itch. Ace Ventura is tough to take after having to watch this guy in depressing roles.

It’s like good singers that have to play guitar poorly at a concert, or good guitar players that make you suffer with their vocals.
