Video: The stupidest “Tuesday stupid” ever?

We haven’t had a good “____day stupid” lately and this one’s been burning a hole in my browser. I know it’s a trick — but what’s the trick? They’re not running the film backwards, obviously. Is there an invisible cut somewhere? Because if not, dude.

It working? Checked it in three browsers and not seeing it in any. :P

CorinthianJest on August 28, 2007 at 3:33 PM

It’s working for me.

Allahpundit on August 28, 2007 at 3:34 PM

Looks to me like the trick is to waste your life away in a bar working on a bar trick thousands of times, until you get it right. God what a wasted life, He could have spent all that time watching TV. I bet I watched the same episode of Modern Marvels at least 3 or 4 times before he got that trick down.

Masscon on August 28, 2007 at 3:35 PM

It’s working for me…and I think it’s real.

jdpaz on August 28, 2007 at 3:35 PM

1) get really good at quarters

2) label ten quarters, smack them against the table; videotape results with slo-mo

3) mark where each of quarters hits

4) perform this ten times do get a decent distribution array.

5) position ten corresponding cups in the mean area where each of the ten labeled quarters has landed in the last ten tries.

6) shoot video,

pretending like it is the first take,

until you get all ten quarters to go in.

If the video is real and he can explain himself, this would be a good physics demonstration. Anything to help make science more exciting to the masses :)

Wow, he now has the college aged equivalent of “my dad can beat up your dad” bragging rights.

His next trick is asking if I want any appetizers!

pb5000 on August 28, 2007 at 3:39 PM

I see dead people…

can’t be real…..no fraking way. 10 quaters on 10 different trajectories and all score….come on fellas…..I got a bridge right over here I want you to look at.

Limerick on August 28, 2007 at 3:39 PM

Looks fake to me.

First: we never see that the shot-glasses are empty, prior to the shot.

Second: notice the obvious sleight-of-hand he does after showing us the quarters, and before he makes the shot. The stack of quarters is likely bound, in order to facilitate their quick and quiet transfer to his pocket.

Third: the quarters flying through the air just doesn’t look right. I call CG.

Allahpundit on August 28, 2007 at 3:40 PM

Folks, after showing the close up of the quarters in his had the camera zooms out…he stands up covering the quarter hand with the other hand, droping the quarters to the floor. His hand, now empty, slams onto the table, and quarters are added in post. In fact when they do the slow motion replay you can see that his hand is empty before it hits.

Weight of Glory on August 28, 2007 at 3:40 PM

Yeah that’s kinda impressive…but can he roll those quarters off his nose????????

KelliD on August 28, 2007 at 3:40 PM

Speaking of God, the “god” that Muslims worship, “Allah”, is in reality a moon god. From the American Thinker website, a fascinating and fun read.

A wizard did it.

Asher on August 28, 2007 at 3:44 PM

I think there are several factors that have to considered when critiquing the “quarters in flight” part of the clip.

1) The recording quality of the camera.
2) The recording quality setting, which includes frames/sec.
3) The number of frames copied when transferred to a media file either to be sent to youtube or saved on the server.

Weebork on August 28, 2007 at 3:45 PM

Weight of Glory,

You’re right. I watched closer. Sweet video though.

I’ve made shots out of my eyes, off my nose and chin. I once sank one into a 3 foot high 4 inch diameter tube by standing on a chair and rolling it off my nose. I’m having trouble thinking it’s real. The quarters wouldn’t spread out like that.

Damn…I’m never playing quarters with that guy.

Practice, practice, practice. And maybe something with the parquet on the surface of the table? Awesome, anyway.

That guy looks so much like my college boyfriend, it’s silly. I can’t wait to hear the sound.

Tanya on August 28, 2007 at 3:59 PM

Ok when he stands up, why does he bend over in a weird way and why does he cover the hand with the quarters with his other hand. The quarters are already in the cups and the flying quarters are faked. They speed up at the apex of the ark when they should slow down.

That could be simply because the frame rate is small.

Did anyone notice the slight shadow that appears to the right of the glass closest to the camera, the orange glass? The shadow appears after the coins enter the glasses. The angle of the shadow is toward the light source not away as it should have. Indicating the video was edited. I can go back to work now.

ronsfi on August 28, 2007 at 4:00 PM

He is setting his balance and re-adjusting the coins in his hand. If he isnt holding the coins just right they wont go where he wants them to. They are not speeding up at the apex, they are rotating, the quarters are tumbling end over end as it were.

HOW DARE YOU!

Weight of Glory on August 28, 2007 at 4:01 PM

Heh heh, sorry but its really just basic physics, kind of like playing pool. Pay attention to how the glasses are lined up on the table, they have a slight parabolic arc to them. When I was in college studying physics we had to do experiments proving our trajectory calculations that were kind of similar.

mikeyboss on August 28, 2007 at 4:57 PM

doriangrey really needs to first notice the sleight of hand that he very weekly pulls off while the guy is standing up. Besides, being an engineering major myself, I know that this couldn’t have been done on the first try, if at all. You should know that. You learn that kind of thing in labs. I find it hard to believe that you’re that gullible dorian, especially with a degree in physics.

Dork B. on August 28, 2007 at 5:01 PM

jdpaz on August 28, 2007 at 3:35 PM

I think it’s real and it’s not that hard to figure out the trick. Take a 10 quarters, hold them in your hand, bounce them off the table (aiming at a specific spot on the table), put glasses where they land, repeat. There shouldn’t be too much variability in their trajectory so the second time you do it you have a good chance of landing them in the glasses. You just need to be consistent in your throwing technique which this guy clearly is.

TheBigOldDog on August 28, 2007 at 5:02 PM

Very fake…..cheezy and not at all convincing slight of hand and an obvious edit job.
Nothing at all in his hand when he slams his hand on the table.

-phil

phile on August 28, 2007 at 5:10 PM

Yep, the guy has game…

But it’s fake.

Even though this was very entertaining to watch, I despise hucksters. The original poster plays it off like it’s the real McCoy, which naturally made me very curious as to whether or not it actually is the real deal.

So I examined the video frame by frame… and it’s a sham. I broke it down into an animated gif. For brevity, and file size sake, I cut quite a bit of frames from the animation but I left the important ones.

He starts with the classic misdirect and follows-up with the slight of hand (he gets out of the chair like he has a hernia and flubs slightly but quickly recovers), which doesn’t well work on video unless the VIDEOGRAPHER is on the same page as the guy pulling the trick.

Watch during the slam as after his hand hits the table, there are no quarters (Neo… there is no spoooon), but they mysteriously reappear in-flight. Next, the quarters are seen arcing through the air, then stop and seem to float in mid air (all the while as the huckster is still moving), then the quarters drop straight down into the glasses. However, one quarter remains in forward motion all the way to the shot-glass. That’s because he bounced one and the other nine were photoshopped/edited in.

I have to hand it to them, they did a pretty good editing job overall as the video rolls, but it’s obviously amateur when you break it down frame by frame.

WATCH AND BE AMAZED

SilverStar830.. this guy shot this with just a regular video camera, it was not shot with a high speed camera which is what you would need to capture every detail of the coins flight. The coins are not disappearing… there just was no video frame that captured that microsecond of time. Looks real to me, I but I could do it with enough practice.

SilverStar830 on August 28, 2007 at 5:24 PM

I agree with BigOldDog that the trick is possible. It’s all kinematics (physics) and can be worked out enough either on paper, if you know the formulas, or trial and error if you don’t. (I’m guessing he’s the latter.)

I don’t know… why do the quarters float and spin in one spot while the guy doing the “trick” still moves logically?

It’s amateur, good effect as the video rolls, but still amateur.

SilverStar830 on August 28, 2007 at 5:24 PM

I’m guessing you haven’t studied a whole lot of physics. The quarters are not

float and spin in one spot

They are following a very precise trajoctory, their shape and the light reflecting off their shiny surface is causing you to misinterpret what you are seeing. What you are seeing is called an Optical Occlusion, remember light travels very very fast, the coin on the other hand is traveling relative to the speed of light extremely slowly.

Light is only reflecting off the coin towards the camera for a fraction of a percentage of each rotation of the coin. Hence the coins appearance to float, that is because you are only seeing the coins trajectory in those brief moments when light is reflecting off the coin, not the coins full trajectory.

Like I said before, ignore the coins and watch the shadows cast on the table by the coins. It would have taken the experts from Industrial lights and Magic to pull that off.

doriangrey on August 28, 2007 at 5:47 PM

Why do the slight of hand at all if they were just going to edit the video? Why not just cut it the moment the coins hit the table?

TheBigOldDog on August 28, 2007 at 5:16 PM

He still needs a shot of the follow-through without a table full of quarters all over the place. With enough time, they could have edited them all out, but its just a lot easier to add them in after the fact.

To me the trajectory didn’t look right, apex was too close to the cups. It should have been a the midpoint.

pedestrian on August 28, 2007 at 5:47 PM

TheBigOldDog on August 28, 2007 at 5:32 PM

Haaa… I found the coins in that frame look about three inches in front of his hand and only about two or three inches off the table surface. You will see a shiney column. They have not moved away from each other yet. They are still pretty much in a column.

Maxx on August 28, 2007 at 5:50 PM

Sorry wrong answer, you cannot see the quarters because they are being occluded. Look on the table between his forefinger and thumb and you will see the thing that optical occlusion cannot hide. The shadow of the coins.

doriangrey on August 28, 2007 at 5:57 PM

I’m guessing you haven’t studied a whole lot of physics.

doriangrey on August 28, 2007 at 5:47 PM

And judging by the bulk of your posts on HotAir, you obviously have…?

Look at the table top, there are no shadows from the coins as they travel across the top, even from the time they are all bunched up in te beginning of the illusion. HIS shadow however is bold and almost in direct line with his body in front of him indicating light almost directly above the table and somewhat behind him. Shadows from the coins at the start when they’re bunched up to the end should be directly in view starting in the middle of the table top and fanning outwards left and right.

LoL

It doesn’t take Industrial anything to fake a vid these days. A decent home PC, some decent editing software and some decent knowledge in its use, and some time is allll that’s required.

Sorry guys, that actually the quarter roll that he took the quarters out of. Go back to the beginning of the video and notice it torn half open right next to his right hand.

I agree that it’s the quarter roll. The bounce happens right in line with that roll, though. So it’s inconclusive.

Contra many: there is shadowing of the coins in flight and it’s much too realistic and consistent with overhead lighting to be discounted. Watch for the shadows in the descent.
