Poor SF family coincidentally donates $45K to Hillary on same days as rich businessman; Update: More coincidences?

Two possibilities. One: a poor but proud family of six people living in a small house near the airport sock away 50 grand, but rather than use it to move to new digs or renovate the one they’ve got, they nobly choose to give it to America’s First Woman President instead — coincidentally, often on the same dates that a New York City businessman who once listed their address as his residence makes his own donations to her and notwithstanding the fact that none of them made a political contribution before 2004.
Two: figure it out. My favorite part is the description of the garden:
It isn’t obvious how the Paw family is able to afford such political largess. Records show they own a gift shop and live in a 1,280-square-foot house that they recently refinanced for $270,000. William Paw, the 64-year-old head of the household, is a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service who earns about $49,000 a year, according to a union representative. Alice Paw, also 64, is a homemaker. The couple’s grown children have jobs ranging from account manager at a software company to “attendance liaison” at a local public high school. One is listed on campaign records as an executive at a mutual fund…
The Paws’ political donations closely track donations made by Norman Hsu, a wealthy New York businessman in the apparel industry who once listed the Paw home as his address, according to public records. Mr. Hsu is one of the top fund-raisers for Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign. He has hosted or co-hosted some of her most prominent money-raising events…
In an email last night, one of the Paws’ sons, Winkle, said he had sometimes been asked by Mr. Hsu to make contributions, and sometimes he himself had asked family members to donate. But he added: “I have been fortunate in my investments and all of my contributions have been my money.”…
The Paw family is just one set of donors whose political donations are similar to Mr. Hsu’s. Several business associates of Mr. Hsu in New York have made donations to the same candidates, on the same dates for similar amounts as Mr. Hsu…
The Paw’s Daly City home is a one-story house in a working-class suburb of San Francisco. On a recent day, a coiled garden hose rested next to a dilapidated garden with a half-dozen dried out plants. The din of traffic from a nearby freeway was occasionally drowned out by jumbo jets departing San Francisco International Airport.
How about this as the third alternative: the son who’s a mutual fund executive — Winkle, presumably — is pals with Hsu, does business with him, gets hit up by him every now and then for a donation to his favorite candidate. As thanks, the son cuts Hillary a check and makes gifts to his family members of, say, $2,300 each, which they’re technically free to dispose of as they wish but which, per his request, they end up donating to Hillary. Campaign finance lawyers can correct me but I doubt there’s anything illegal about that. As to why he’d give them money for campaign contributions but not to water the plants, maybe they’re just fond of the house as is and don’t want to move? And as for why Hsu once listed their address as his residence, maybe he’s an old family friend and the Paws took him in for whatever reason when he was younger (the Journal doesn’t say when Hsu listed their address as his residence)? The point is, there could be an innocent explanation for all the coincidences. It’s just … unlikely.
Exit question: Why on earth would Hsu have ever said he lived at their address if it wasn’t true? What motive would he have to lie about that? If this is all just a scheme to launder donations, that tidbit is a hot yet totally unnecessary lead.
Update: Flip’s found a few more Hsu-related coincidences. A good fundraiser, or something more?

Sooner or later, the Clinton’s “chinese” connections were going to be re-visited. This is sooner. Wonder who leaked it, Clinton opponents or Clintons?

and of course now comes the broken record question: how would the press be treating this if it was Mitt or Rudy doing the same thing??????

This is a norm in politics. I was working on a campaign for someone runing for congress. I did a little opposition research.
I discovered two interesting things about our local congressman’s ontributions. First off was that 20 people all from the same law firm all gave the exact same amount at the exact same time.
And repeated further down was another law firm. Same thing execpt it was 50 members of the same law firm all giving the same ammount at the same time.
This is one way corporations and companies get around legal limits. They give contirbutions in their workers names.
And the congressman ? Is Alan Molohan

I’m not a lawyer, but I think your correct. That scenario sounds very similar to the “bundling” of individual campaign contributions being done by interest groups. All legal, of course.

If you see one roach you more than likely have an infestation. Should we start sending her campaign HQ some roach motels?
frreal on August 28, 2007 at 12:57 PM
That’s one consistency about the Clintons: they never have paid much attention to who they get their cash from, or how they get it, or such picayune details as “legality.”
Ironically it’s Clintonista James Carville, as I recall, who made the notorious remark to the effect of dragging a dollar bill through a trailer park and seeing what you get…
What you get is Bill and Hillary Clinton.

This is nothing. I’m sure there are PLENTY of juicy condemning facts that are being held in the hip pockets of many people who are waiting for Hillary to get nominated first. The good stuff won’t come out until then and probably late in the campaign. You never use your best weapons first in a political battle and I would think that the later they are deployed the better.

Sorry to be so “how I am” but I make mortgages for a living. At least I did before everyone decided they didn’t want to buy a house anymore and couldn’t qualify for a loan even if they wanted to, and so now I sit at work and read HotAir all day.
Anywho … if you’ve been reading the daily Business Obituaries and wondering why all these mortgage companies run by bright MBA types are going bankrupt, just take another look at this one —
– and then do the math. Even a generous calculation of this loan translates into a $2,200/month payment, and therefore a debt ratio of about 55%, if they don’t owe anyone else a single penny.
a) this explains why the companies are all going bankrupt.
b) this makes Allah’s questions even more penetrating. Why would these modest folks refinance this rat farm for $270,000? Could they possibly already owe that much, or did they “cash out” with this loan?
2 + 2 = Hillary and Bill and the usual DemoRat fundraising shenanigans.

Gotta tell you, I’m not surprised at anything the Clintons do or at anything done on their behalf, and so this is the part of this story that really grabbed my attention. My husband and I have an income roughly 3 times this amount, and we do not live in a $270,000 house. We could probably afford it, but we’d have no money left for anything else important, like health insurance, school tuition and family vacations.
reine.de.tout on August 28, 2007 at 2:32 PM
I think if you read the copy, you will find that that is indeed illegal.
Giving money to someone to bypass the law is illegal. Employers can’t give “bonuses” to employees and tell them to give it to polititions, and you can’t “give” money to friends to do the same. The caveat is proving the connection. And in this case, I think they can.
As I said, Fred sits back and watches others campaigns implode.
right2bright on August 28, 2007 at 2:34 PM
They lie, they cheat, they slide on their belly like snakes. (No offense to snakes).
They Dems rape, murder, cheat on voting and still manage to get away with all of it, since they are the party of the “real” people.
Hening on August 28, 2007 at 2:39 PM
Giving gifts to employees that then turn around and give the max amount to a political campaign IS ILLEGAL.

Maybe it’s a violation of campaign finance law to reimburse people for their donations after they have made a donation, but if you pay them off up front before they donate then that’s perfectly peachy?

I guess I have to wonder if there should be an investigation at the very least… Aren’t there tax issues involved here, even if it’s on the up and up? Shouldn’t there be records kept of the money exchanging hands before being donated to Hillary, and taxes paid on that money?

Just so you all have a geographical picture that the Wall Street Journal doesn’t fully flesh out: Firstly, it isn’t SF; it’s two or three miles south, so the headline should be “SF area.” Also, it would be very, very expensive, in terms of home costs and property taxes, to move from that location to anywhere else convenient to San Francisco. It’s an area that’s foggy, “working class,” and not convenient to the San Francisco business or tourist districts, so that drives prices down. It also happens to be a very nice neighborhood only a fraction of a mile from beautiful beaches. I can understand why they might not move. Contrary to stereotype, many Bay Area residents get attached to their houses, which is one of the reasons prices are so expensive. And, though it may be in the flight path (of, I believe, departing flights), it’s about eight miles from the airport, so that’s probably not that big a deal. The “nearby freeway” is a mile away; you’d get more bothersome noise from Skyline Boulevard, which is less than a block away and has a high average speed, though it’s relatively empty during non-commute hours.
Again, I’m not explaining their Clinton-related actions, just why they might not want to move.
calbear on August 28, 2007 at 3:15 PM
Oh, also, it’s a very Chinese neighborhood. The nearest market is Ranch 99, and Daly City is America’s largest Asian-majority city.
calbear on August 28, 2007 at 3:21 PM
Um, somehow I doubt that’s really legal. that seems more like paying someone specifically to make a campaign contribution (aka laundering).
Maybe this specific form of money laundering for campaign contributions is legal (I can see why politicians would try to make a loophole, as they get paid), but it certainly smells fishy.
On the other hand, if you have found a “legal” manner by which to launder money, please let me know… that could be a useful bit of info… :)

Unfortunately, the Clintonistas are very good at getting out of these blatantly obvious payoff situations. They come up with some convenient excuse like Gore’s “iced tea” moment in that Bhuddist Temple, claim their innocence, return the money, and defy anybody to implicate them to the funds they illegally recieved.
