Experts say: Pakistan is America’s second worst ally
posted at 6:00 pm on August 28, 2007 by Bryan
The liberal Center for American Progress conducted the survey, which polled opinion all around the US foreign policy establishment.
Pakistan was rated as the US’s second-worst ally in this year’s Terrorism Index. Pakistan was also rated the country most likely to become the next Al-Qaeda stronghold and the most likely to transfer nuclear technology to terrorists.
The index, a survey of 100 leading US foreign policy experts, indicates a growing concern in Washington circles at the inability of Pakistan’s military regime to control its Islamicist terror problem.
I’m not sure that assessment is entirely fair; Pakistan has been very helpful in some ways (such as capturing Khalid Sheikh Mohammed) and very unhelpful in some others (the deals over Waziristan). Musharraf presides over one of the most ungovernable countries on earth, a country which probably should not have been created in the first place and which sits between an arch enemy (India) and a void (Afghanistan), with the mullahs to his southwest and China to his north, just to make it more fun. Let’s see the experts try ruling such a place. Meanwhile, some allies, such as Saudi Arabia and Jordan, have sustained and/or fueled terrorism for years, and in Jordan’s case they’re harboring Saddam Hussein’s daughter to this day as she helps lead the insurgency in Iraq. If asked, I might vote the Saudis our worst ally. Or the French, at least before Sarkozy took over.
If Mushy’s our second worst ally, who’s the worst?
While Russia was rated by a third of the respondents as the ally that least serves the US national security interest, Pakistan came in second at 22%. Saudi Arabia was third at 17%. Liberals were more skeptical about Pakistan’s status as an ally than conservatives.
I’m not sure I’d even list Russia as an ally at all. In fact, I’m sure I wouldn’t. Whatever his soul might look like, Putin has proven himself to be a thug who’s interested in resurrecting elements of the USSR by another name. Still, I agree with some of the sentiments that the survey found.
Pakistan was seen as the greater menace when it came to the transfer of nuclear technology. A remarkable 74% said Pakistan is likely to be the source of such technology for terrorists in “the next three to five years.” Even perennial bad boy North Korea only notched a 42% rating and Iran a mere 31%. Liberal and moderates were far more pessimistic about “loose nukes” in Pakistan than conservatives.
For a variety of reasons, that’s probably about right. Pakistan’s A. Q. Khan must figure into the read: Through him, Pakistan has already spread nuclear technology and it’s only a bullet away from a possible Islamist takeover. North Korea and Iran are bad, but both have benefited from Pakistan’s nuclear black market, and neither is as far along as Pakistan is with respect to possessing nuclear weapons that can be used in combat. A significant difference between Pakistan and Iran and North Korea, though, would be that the current government is unlikely to make selling nuclear technology its national policy, at least as long as Musharraf or a non-jihadist has the helm.
Overall, the experts seem to think the world is a dismal place. And most of the experts don’t think the war in Iraq is helping US national security any. I think that whether it helps or hurts our security more depends very much on how it ends.

Dude, what else is Musharraf supposed to do, he’s dancing on a powder keg full of jihadis…or something. He’s gotta be careful or else there will be a coup by the islamists, and that’s pretty much the last thing we want.

Pakistan is the best we can hope for given the conditions there.
Saudi Arabia is clearly our worst ally and has been for a long time.
Russia is most definitely not an ally.

I wonder if we’re Pakistan’s worst ally?
Ask any Pakistani official why they still support Islamist Radicals on the side, and it’s because they’re afraid we’re going to be par for the course and leave them out to dry.

Meanwhile, we throw more military hardware at them, meaning arms.
So much for investing wisely.

My expert opinion on USA’s worst ally:
1. Saudi Arabia
2. Jordan
3. Iraq
4. Mexico
5. Canada
Russia, China, and India cannot be considered allies.
The situation in Pakistan is very dangerous, but Musharraf is doing to best he can with what the hand he was dealt.
slp on August 28, 2007 at 6:47 PM
I would rate Saudi Arabia much higher than Musharraf. He’s practically a lame duck now because of the fundamentalists and other political problems. He did his best. Perhaps he should soon start working out how to get out of the country and into the US, where his children live. Because it’s only a matter of time before he’s thrown out.

Without Musharraf, Pakistan could be our first worst enemy.

We had BETTER have some kinda contingency plans for grabbing or destroying Pakistan’s nukes in case Mushy is overthrown by the muj. If not, we’ll have some ‘splainin’ to do when our kids grow up in a post-nuclear-attack America.
“Well Johnny, we thought the Paki’s had everything under control but then those baaaaad al qaeda people stole Pakistan’s nukes and blew up what we used to call “New York City” so now the Rangers have to play in East Rutherford, N.J.”

IMHO, any Islamic country that currently has, or is working towards nuclear capability should be put on warning that, in the event a nuke is detonated by terrorists in a US city, they will all become targets for nuclear retaliation by the United States.
Since this type of attack would more than likely come from a terrorist organization and not any one country and because it would be impossible to determine who supplied the device, maybe that would give them more of a reason to keep track of their inventory to insure that a nuclear weapon isn’t handed over to Al Qaeda or “accidently” lost. Who knows, it may also give them more determination to pay attention to what their neighbors are up to.
AZ_Mike on August 28, 2007 at 7:41 PM
They’re/you’re all wrong. America’s worst ally is the Democrat party, and their cohorts, the leftist press.

Mushy’s tactic of playing Franco and surviving this war was a nice idea but Franco didn’t have Strumtruppen spawning in the mountains. I agree that he is completely trapped and is in a 100% survival mode. I just don’t see any winning scenario here. We attack, he gets ousted, the bad guys rule.
We don’t attack, he gets popped, the gad guys rule. Either way they get the PAC mushroom maker. The only check is India and what they will do is anyone’s guess. They have a long history of doing things their way and not towing anyone’s line. Situation is beyond FUd.

If you want a handle on what kind of angle the survey takes, the questions was actaully framed as follows: “Choose the ally that least serves America’s national security interests”. The results were Russia (34%), Pakistan (22%), Saudi Arabia (17%) and ISRAEL!!! (14%). That says about all you need to know.
Incidentally, there was a news story last week that knowledge by Americans regarding foreign affairs is not good. I tend to disagree with that as a generalization, but when I see comments like slp’s above I have to wonder.
Canada is not the US 5th worst ally…there is no point is rehashing the facts, but I will say that this past week just saw the 70th Canadian (69th soldier and 1 diplomat) killed in Afghanistan. How many Aussies have fallen in Iraq. (I think I’m right that, thank God, none).
Blaise on August 28, 2007 at 8:36 PM
I wouldn’t consider the democratic party and its press an ally.
Truely, America has only one real ally, Australia. Even Canada is basically controlled by the Left and the likes of Avi Lewis, so don’t count on Canada carrying water for the US. Britain? Same story. So really, the US is basically alone, as Mark Steyn said. With the possible exception of Australia.
The real question is not who is an ally, since the US has none, but who is not an enemy. Right now, all of South America can be considered an enemy. All of southeast Asia, Russia, China, and the entire Middle East also in the ideological enemy camp.
It is going to get interesting. I just hope our economy does not go to pot by going to WWIII. In fact, it may get a boost. Either way, a lot of bad people with bad ideas will be cleared from the planet when all is said and done.
I’m optimistic that just as WWII was necessary, ended well, and made a better world, so too this big one coming. It will make WWII look like a Broadway play, but the paradigm shift it will bring in how the world functions might be worth it.

There is much truth in that. The Democrats have their own interests as a political party well ahead of the interests of the country, as if…
Jaibones on August 28, 2007 at 9:15 PM
Bryan, you make a great point about Pakistan being ungovernable. We take the amazing advantages of our physical structure for granted here, with a peaceful ally and ice to the north, two huge oceans, and a third world desert to the south.
Pakistan couldn’t defend its borders if their lives depended on it, in addition to the issue of a population that refuses law and order in favor of theocracy, and a military that will not fight against Muslims.
In the event of a serious threat from Pakistan, would the only option be to bomb the sh*t out of them?
Jaibones on August 28, 2007 at 9:20 PM
I don’t. Most of the Saudi royal family is pretty much Westernized. They just have to run their mouth and utter a “death to Israel” or some stupid crap like that because they’re sitting on a powder keg just as dangerous as Musharif’s. I bet they regret letting the Muslim Brotherhood in now.
