Video: Vick finds Jesus

Smart move here in speaking off the cuff instead of reading from a polished, ghost-written statement. It makes him sound more naive than evil and lends a sincerity to the apology that it wouldn’t have otherwise had, even though you know he’s blowing smoke about how “terrible” he thinks dogfighting is. A good impression to leave fans with before he disappears; Goodell will have a hard time hitting him with a lifetime ban after this.

How soon will he be out of jail, though? The judge, who’s apparently known for harsh sentences, is already warning him not to make any plans:

Hudson emphasized he is not bound by sentencing guidelines and can impose the maximum sentence of up to five years in prison.

“You’re taking your chances here. You’ll have to live with whatever decision I make,” Hudson…

“A first-time offender might well receive no jail time for this offense,” U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg said in a statement. “We thought, however, that the conduct in this conspiracy was heinous, cruel and inhumane” so three of the four defendants, including Vick, should receive harsher sentences.

As for his celebrity jailhouse conversion, we’ll see. The last one didn’t work out so well.

It is people like Vick who REALLY REALLY REALLY give “Finding Jesus” a bad name.

MB4 on August 27, 2007 at 12:47 PM

It always amazes me how people like Vick can only seem to find Jesus when their ass is in a huge sling.

Kowboy on August 27, 2007 at 12:49 PM

85% satisfying. I was concerned that he would fail to condemn dogfighting, but to his credit, he did. He did, however, fail to apologize to the dogs. Those murdered animals all had names. I would have been 100% satisfied if he had apologized to each of them by name.

RushBaby on August 27, 2007 at 12:51 PM

I wager if Mr. Vick gets 5 years, he’ll come out praising Allah.

Ted Kennedy is infinitely worse than Vick. Let Vick serve his time and leave him alone.

Stephon Marbury just announced he’ll be selling his dog muzzles for only $15.

If it’s any consolation for Vick, while he’s doing his stretch, it’s almost a sure thing some other overpaid athlete will come along and do something even more egregious to overshadow this.

Yikes! ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that based on his reading of Vick’s contract and the certified Ashley Leleigh (sp) arbitration case, the Falcon’s may only be able to go after $3- $6M, not the $22 – $29M that’s been reported.

He wasn’t sorry ’till he got caught. Bottom line.

He won’t get what he deserves, next time he talks in public he’ll be coached on how to turn on the tears…they apparently didn’t have enough time to teach him that yet.

They will.

“Video: Vick finds Jesus”

As soon as Vick said these words, I knew AP was already typin’ up a post. I don’t know about the rest of ya’ll, but I thought he did come across as sincerely contrite.

Weight of Glory on August 27, 2007 at 12:59 PM

LOL. Just like Paris Hilton. Apparently a little trip to the klink is all that our “finer citizenry” needs in order to “find Jesus.” Can YOU say “zero credibility”?

My collie says:

“Vick finds Jesus.”

Maybe. Maybe not.

But I’m pretty sure he found a 71 million dollar hole in his wallet.

locomotivebreath1901 on August 27, 2007 at 1:05 PM

About the whole, “sorry only after he’s caught” thing, the reality is, most people are only sorry after their caught. They know their action is wrong, but through periodical and incremental justifications that are made in one’s head, one can begin on a road to justify many bad things. At that point when one is caught, that all of your justifying melts away, and the people you have hurt stand before you. So it is not uncommon that people are contrite when caught. One thing that he said that signaled his contrition was his admission that he was not honest with the NFL and his team in their earlier conversations. He didn’t need to say that to simply apologize. But I think he did it because he wanted to wipe his slate clean.

If he had instructed his lawyers to NOT try to bargain down the charges as much as possible, then I just might believe that he really felt some remorse.

He did the opposite.

He is only “remorseful” about getting caught and apparently facing some punishment.

That’s it.

PRCalDude on August 27, 2007 at 1:19 PM

I’m not buying any of his lying crap. He said he was ashamed. No Vick. Shame was what you should have felt at your first dog fight. He participated in god knows how many. He then went on to kill. What did he feel after the first killing? Disgust? No. He killed again and again and again and again and, well, you get the picture. His ability to feel shame is not evident here at all. He says he found Jesus because of this. What he really found was that he’s in deep dog feces. He’s scared. He got caught. He’s looking for a way out and will in fact say anything to help himself. What a filthy effing liar.

Guardian on August 27, 2007 at 1:20 PM

Frankly, Michael Vick can take his “I found Jesus” schtick and …well…schtick it. ;-)

DakRoland on August 27, 2007 at 1:22 PM

BGary, Vick being black, I fully expect him to discover the “peace of islam” while in the slammer.

Given that the phrase he used is “turn my life over to God,” I wouldn’t doubt it.

And am I the only one who thought that whenever he refered to himself in the third person there was a little (TM) after it? As in, “I have to make Michael Vick(TM) a better person.”

crazy_legs on August 27, 2007 at 1:30 PM

“Dogfighting is a terrible lucrative, fickle thing. I am very sorry to everyone that I got caught.”

I imagine it’s as close to contrite as he can conjure up, but he apprently wasn’t having serious ethical qualms about dogfighting while he was financing an interstate dogfighting organization. So it’s very difficult to feel any sympathy for him.

Michael Vick to Appear, Take Caller Questions on ‘Tom Joyner Morning Show’ Tuesday

Mary-Jo Kopechne

JiangxiDad on August 27, 2007 at 1:19 PM

Yes I am well aware of Mary Jo Kopechne. His getting her killed in no way invalidates my point about Vick being more of a sadist than Kennedy. In fact it does not even address it.

MB4 on August 27, 2007 at 1:33 PM

If it’s anything like Joyner’s interview with Vick’s mother this morning, replete with Gospel music playing in the background, it will be, well, interesting.

Oh, and Vick’s mother said he found Jesus in March – that would have been before the investigation broke in April, eh?

Brat on August 27, 2007 at 1:37 PM

Uh, guys? As a dog owner I’m certainly not excusing what he did because it was heineous- however he plead guilty, will be punished and apologised. What more can be expected?

Maybe he means it, maybe he doesn’t. I don’t know… but neither do the rest of you.

So you don’t think there was a little sadistic streak evident in the amount of time it took him to report the accident? Or do you think he just took the long to come up with a good story to cover his drunken little self?

Kowboy on August 27, 2007 at 1:37 PM

Many a wretch have provided living testimony to the life changing, life affirming power of finding GOD.
Thus the hymnn ‘Amazing Grace’.

But the number of notables who immediately find God after also finding themselves in legal or personal hot water defies coincidence. When Vick said that, he forfeited his credibility on his entire statement of contrition.

If he hasn’t lost God in 3 years, i’ll apoligize for my cynicism.

MB4 on August 27, 2007 at 1:43 PM

And you may be right. But I think there’s still something morally and mentally wrong with someone who does what he or Vick did. In my mind it’s just about the same thing.

Kowboy on August 27, 2007 at 1:46 PM

Or do you think he just took the long to come up with a good story to cover his drunken little self?

Actually, that was more what happened than Teddy being a sadist. A sadist would’ve watched her drown and taken great delight in it. Teddy-boy simply staggered back to his bed and tried coming up with a story. Mary-Jo’s death was entirely motivated by Fatboy’s political self-preservation. That doesn’t excuse what he did, but that is the difference between Fatboy’s crime and Vick’s.

Vick, OTHO, presumably took great delight in watching those dogs fight. That, by definition, is a sadist.

As I Christian, I have difficulty in believing “jail house” conversions by celebrities. But they do occur on a regular basis and everyone should be given the benefit of the doubt. As expressed by the Paris Hilton reference (Please STOP), not everyone who makes such a statement does so honestly. At the time the statement was made they may have been how they felt. Judging by his expression of shame in his prior actions and statements, I truly believe his statement of faith came to him honestly. Because after all when it’s all is said and done, it will be the only thing remaining for him to hold on to. As opposed to Ms. Hilton, she was obviously making statements that were directed by her publicist. And her only lost was some time away from home. So don’t use her as your measuring stick for Born Again celebrities. There are many, it’s just they tend to disappear after making this declaration as Hollywood doesn’t take kindly to people who turn their backs on their deviant life styles.

And I submit to you:

Ted kennedy’s Secret MySpace entry:

Hi there fellow bloggers. My name is United States Senator Edward Moore Kennedy from the Great State of Massachusetts. You can call me Ted if you want. I was born on February 22, 1932, although people tell me that I look at least 20 years younger.

I graduated from Harvard in June 1956 in the top 10% of my class. I also passed my law bar on my very first try.

I am one of the most senior members of that grand and much loved and respected institution known as the U.S. Senate. All my colleagues respect me and very often come to me for my wise council and advise. I must admit though that when John and Lindsey ask me to turn around and pull my pants down so that they can kiss my ass it does get a little much, but it’s gratifying anyway!

In fact I am so powerful now that I am, in many ways the defacto President of the United States. How’s that for a boy who had to work his way through college?

I am handsome and tall with a muscular build. The ladies just can’t get enough of me. Sometimes I think it is almost a curse.

I sometimes like to chill out after a long day of serving the American people by having a double martini. Contrary to what some of my very few enemies say I never have more than one drink at a time. Well sometimes one for each hand, but that’s it, never two glasses in each hand, except on special occasions like the arrival of 7PM.

I am a lot of fun after work. I am an excellent driver and sometimes I like to go on long drives and see how many bridges I can cross without getting wet. It’s a lot of fun! All the women tell me that I am just too much!
I would like to think that I am open minded, honest, polite, and trustworthy. And I appreciate the same qualities in others.

Who I’d like to meet:
…other progressive bloggers. People who like to rock out. Cool people who live close to Washington D.C. so that we can get together, take all our clothes off, paint 666 on ourselves, and run around stark naked and have a whole lot of fun.

MB4 on August 27, 2007 at 1:49 PM

Michael,

True faith in Jesus Christ comes without qualifiers. You say you’ve found Jesus, asked Him for forgiveness and turned your life over to God, but then you immediately follow it up with this qualifier “I think that’s the right thing to do as of now.”

It’s either the right thing to do for all time, or it’s not.

I hope that was just a verbal gaffe and your newfound faith is deeply sincere. Time will tell. Prison will certainly put your faith to the test.

kjspeedial on August 27, 2007 at 1:52 PM

Just wait till I find Sick Vick’s “Secret MySpace Entry”!

MB4 on August 27, 2007 at 1:53 PM

So Vick has found Jesus? And I guess he will ‘ax’ him for foregiveness. After all he did ‘ax’ everybody else who might have been hurt by his actions for foregiveness. Did he attend the same English class as Al Sharpton?

Prediction – At the his next hearing his lawyer will claim that he was abused by his daddy as a young boy which is the cause for all of his troubles. He is a victim!

OBX Pete on August 27, 2007 at 1:54 PM

Three things are clear here:

First, Vick is an amoral and emotionless thug who is vicious. I really don’t care if he was/is remorseful because everybody is remorseful when they get caught. How bad was he feeling when he electrocuted those dogs for not having enough killer instinct. In this regard, Vick is nothing but a rabid pit bull and society should treat him just like they would that dog.

Second, jail time is appropriate for the level of involvement Vick had in this crime. I don’t think a lifetime ban from the NFL is appropriate considering that others have done far worse without such a penalty. That being said, it really disgusts me that ANYBODY would be out there defending Vick.

Third, Vick will play football again. So long as he shows talent, some team is going to pay him no matter what the thug did to those dogs. He may be a few years older by the time it occurs but thanks to the ACLU our nation’s prison system has gym facilities that rival state-of-the-art NFL training rooms.

YEppers. Very smart. He came across as humble and seeking forgiveness by not having the perfect script in front of him. Not sure if its genuine, but it “looks” better than a clevely worded statement.

lorien1973 on August 27, 2007 at 1:56 PM

Again this gets to what Rosie and Olberduche keep preaching. That celebrities (and sports stars are celebrities) get a special set of rules different than the most of us

people like Vick and O J and Imus and others all get special treatment in our land and Rosie and Olber think that is just great (because they veiw themselves as celebrities as well)

Again this is liberalism at its finest. Only the elites get special rules and they are the elites.

And they said we gave up royalty when we broke from the British.

rplat on August 27, 2007 at 1:58 PM

The thing that gets me is that he insist that he did not make any money or gamble on the fights, as if this made his deeds any less heinous. I think it would have been better if he had a monetary interest, because it just shows me he tortured and killed for pure enjoyment.

jman on August 27, 2007 at 1:59 PM

I don’t understand all the contraversy, Vick broke laws, Vick was caught. Whether he found god 5 yrs ago, yesterday or is bs’n us on his great find, has nothing to do with it. It’s time for him to pay…’punishment’…it’s over…move along now.

oldernslower on August 27, 2007 at 2:03 PM

To be honest the only person who knows if Vick truly found God or not is God, and he’s not telling us right now ya know? Vick says he’s turned his life over to Jesus and God – in my faith you prove such with actions and with deeds, lets see if he truly has. And if not then God will have his own say.

Which makes the comparison hold even less water than before (pun definitely not intended). You’re right, only Fatboy knows what he did because the only other witness is Mary-Jo. But given the grisly details about dogfighting and the fact that the co-defendants went into excruciating details of Vick’s level of involvement, I think we can safely say that Vick truly took enjoyment from watching two dogs tear the absolute you-know-what out of each other. The comparison doesn’t hold up.

If so, it’s the beginning of a new life for him! Of course, that new life starts in prison. There are a lot of good prison ministries to help him learn and grow if he is serious. I thought Michael came off as sincere and contrite. What he did was terrible, no doubt. He is going to pay his debt to society and will have a chance at a clean slate after ____ years in jail/probation. If he did accept Christ, his slate is already wiped clean! and if it’s true, there is rejoicing in Heaven, even if there isn’t much on this thread.

That is great, I love those satirical comments…you had me going there for awhile, I thought you were serious.

Great sarcasm. This is the best

MERRY CHRISTMAS JACKASS!

I don’t care if he found Jimmy Hoffa . . . the vile, vicious idiot needs to try to morph himself into a human being, but even if he’s successful he should never be allowed to insult the public by returning to professional football.

Try more like he lost $150 MILLION. Yeah, that’s right, One-Hundred-Fifty-Million-Dollars, and he blew it on a few thousand dollars worth of dog fighting and bankrolling illegal gambling.

How the hell can you possibly see Vick as the victim? He lost all that career money because VICK HIMSELF, along with professional sports and a sports equipment sponsor layed that loss on him, not society. Society is going to give him a jail sentence within sentencing parameters, as layed out by law, so unbunch your undies.

Pro Sports has to have some sort of code of ethics, and Nike reserves the right to hire and fire whomever the hell they want to for any reason they deem fit. Michael Vick’s a hood rat, and Michael Vick’s reaping just what Michael Vick has sown… no more, no less.

SilverStar830 on August 27, 2007 at 4:19 PM

I worked for Nike some years ago and they do have an “employment at will” policy. For “regular” employees they can give as little notice as they want. After I had left there I kept in touch with some of the people there and they told me about a number of people who were called into their manager’s office at 3 or 4pm on a Friday, were told that their employment had been terminated, and when they got back to their desk a security guard stood there while they packed the stuff in their desk and then escorted them out the door.

One time at a summer company picnic an employee’s wife and kids came along, his kids were wearing Reboks, and they fired him the next day.

And that’s the point. Vick’s relationship with God has absolutely nothing to do with his culpabilty for being a emotionless thug. If Vick has accepted Christ, his sins are forgiven but not forgotten by the US Justice Department. It isn’t a mitigating factor.

It is people like Vick who REALLY REALLY REALLY give “Finding Jesus” a bad name

Sorry, but I don’t see how anything this man said,, or how he said it, gave “Finding Jesus” a bad name! He took full responsibility and admitted it was wrong. Yes, he asked for forgiveness,, but he also seemed ready for whatever consequences follow, and said he will not point the finger at anyone else! He apologized to everyone! What more can you ask for??

Rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes

How about that they lock the sadist up and throw away the key!

It would also be kind of nice if no one defended him and treated HIM like HE was some kind of victim.

Additionally it would be kind of nice if no one acted like his critics were the sadists.

Don’t know if y’all listen to Neal Boortz or not, but this morning Neal heard about a local school where the students were lead in a “moment of silence” to pray for Vick to get a light sentence. From Neal’s Nuze:

AND NOW CAN WE ALL BOW OUR HEADS …..

The scene is McNair High School in DeKalb County, Georgia. That’s near Atlanta, for those of you from out of town. It’s time for the customary moment of silence for all of the students and staff. During the moment of silence here comes McNair principal striding up to the microphone. He then asks the students at McNair to …. (can’t make this stuff up, folks) … pray for Michael Vick.

Neal’s producer, Belinda, made several calls to get the Principal on the air. Finally the school got to the point they quit taking Belinda’s calls. I was LMAO along with Neal. Neal also noted the Vick comment “I’ve got lots of down time” and said “oh, yeah, he’s gonna have LOTS of downtime”… ROFL
