Report: Sen. Larry Craig arrested in June on suspicion of “lewd conduct” in public restroom; Update: Big misunderstanding, says Craig; Update: Craig resigns from Romney campaign

posted at 5:31 pm on August 27, 2007 by Allahpundit

If you’re wondering which party he belongs to, let me put it this way: the media will be sure to specify it in its reporting on this story.

The page at Roll Call is down due to server overload but you can read the nuts and bolts at Political Wire. He was one of the senators named by the left’s McCornthyites during the Foley uproar as being in the closet. The details from Roll Call don’t explicitly corroborate that claim, but…

Special disastrous bonus factoid: He’s up for re-election next year!

Update: Free Republic has reprinted the Roll Call story. “At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, ‘What do you think about that?’ the report states.” I think he can probably start throwing away those cards now.

Commenter Scott McC quips, “He was livin’ in his own private Idaho.”

Update: You have to read the FR article to understand it, but here’s your quote of the day:

Craig stated “that he has a wide stance when going to the bathroom and that his foot may have touched mine,” the report states.

Update: One of our commenters reminds me that Craig voted yes on shamnesty cloture. Fare thee well, Larry.

Update: Uh huh:

Craig said in a statement issued by his office that he was not involved in any inappropriate conduct.

“At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions,” he said. “I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously.”

Update: Run away! Run away! Also:

Btw, rumors of Craig’s homosexuality didn’t just pop up last year. Then-Rep. Larry Craig went on network news in 1982 to deny rumors involving cocaine and sex with male pages.

Update: Hugh Hewitt wants Craig to resign immediately but David Vitter to stay on. Huh?

Update: Idaho Governor Butch Otter, who’d appoint Craig’s replacement, says he’s been blindsided by the news. Needless to say, the quicker they can get him out and someone else in, the better the chances of holding the seat.

Update: That was fast.

Nice, except the MSM would never use the word “good” in describing a conservative Republican. They prefer words like “embattled”, “firebrand” and “staunchly” when referring to conservatives.

During the Foley hysteria, his name came up specifically in the context of bathroom encounters with male prostitutes. At the time I wondered how the queers could possibly suggest that unless it was true.

And here we are. Apparently, he did a lot of this sort of sport. The defense at the time of the unfounded allegations was that he is a “happily married man, with four fine sons, and is a good Christian and solid conservative”.

I, myself, found him to be increasingly anti-conservative and liberal despite a really solid conservative record previously. Do you think he was trying to curry favor with the people he … uh … curried?

Ewwwwwww. Thanks to Larry Craig I’m now fairly well-versed in gay public bathroom pickup rituals (lucky me!):

“At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct.

But, what does this signify?

Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly.

Does that mean, “get away from me creep or I’ll squash you like a cockroach” or “Your stall or mine”?

Well, this doesn’t have to be as bad as it seems. There could still be a little flickering light at the end of the tunnel somewhere. Perhaps,, even though he is gay and does strange things in bathrooms,, if he still has some sort of loyalty to the party and some conservative principles,, he could just make the big switch to the Democrat party! Seriously! this would be very fun to watch! The whole thing would turn around, and at least break even. Larry ought to just hold a press conference,, fall on the sword,, that kind of thing,, state he can no longer remain in the closet and wants to come clean,, he admits to all his sexual flings in bathrooms,, immorality, whatever else may come out,, then just state he realizes the Democrat party is his true home and denounce the Republican party for being too conservative! Praise the Democrats for their open acceptance of other sexual deviants and law breakers like Senator A, Senator B. Congressman C and so on. Praise the Democrats! Praise the homosexual lobby! Praise the media for their fight for free and unrestrained sex anytime and any place! How might the media go about reporting that, I wonder. Just imagine the contortions!

What I don’t understand is how any of this is illegal! Reading the Roll Call piece republished at FR, it’s just two men communicating privately outside the view of others. He never engaged in any behavior nor did he offer any money.

This looks to be really bad police work and shouldn’t be let into court. If you are going to have stings you need to have much more substantial behavior than this (sharing a stall +). This wasn’t George Michael level of behavior or anything.

Idaho is a very conservative (read: Mormon) State. Things like the Lottery and liquor, although tolerated, are hidden – it’s weird.

To quote the article…

Karsnia entered the bathroom at noon that day and about 13 minutes after taking a seat in a stall, he stated he could see “an older white male with grey hair standing outside my stall.”

Theworldisnotenough on August 27, 2007 at 7:21 PM

BuyDanish: no I didn’t miss that. He plead guilty to try and bury this, and obviously he did want to fool around, but I still don’t see any underlying crime.

From the report of the sting, the cop dropped his police ID while they were in separate stalls and the “lewd conduct” was him swiping his hand under the divider and putting his foot into the officer’s stall. That’s communication to establish that the other guy would be interested, and the police officer indicated that he was, until he made the arrest.

Gay sex isn’t illegal, and making a pass at someone shouldn’t be lewd conduct. I don’t think that people should be having sex in public bathrooms, but this didn’t get anywhere close to that. Just watch how this standard gets applied to heterosexuals by a militant PC prosecutor (unfortunately, I seem to be repeating myself). Nifong wasn’t the only one, and stings like the one that got Sen. Craig merely encourage the Nifongs of the world.

Crusing bathrooms is nasty as well as being devastatingly immoral when you are married like Sen. Craig. I just don’t think that flirting should be made illegal.

I understand your theory, except when we get to the point that the person in the other stall may not want to “flirt”, and at that point it is predatory behavior.

Idaho Sen. Larry Craig Denies Allegations of Same-Sex Affairs
http://www.newwest.net/index.php/city/article/idaho_sen_larry_craig_denies_allegations_of_same_sex_affairs/C108/L108/

By Jill Kuraitis, 10-17-06

Mike Rogers, who calls himself “the nation’s leading gay activist blogger” has just finished a nationally-broadcast interview on the Ed Schultz Radio Show in which he alleges that Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig has engaged in same-sex sexual activity.

Senator Craig’s office flatly rejected the claims. “The Senator says this story is absolutely ridiculous – almost laughable,” said press secretary Sid Smith. “It has no basis in fact.”

Rogers said he has talked to three men unknown to each other who all reported in detail their sexual encounters with Craig over the last four years. The men were of legal age, Rogers said. (Audio of Rogers on the Ed Schultz show is available here.)

Rogers says that digging into the private lives of politicians who support anti-gay legislation is legitimate. Because Craig supported and voted for the Defense of Marriage act, it is politically relevant to reveal these claims, Rogers said. In a letter to Craig, he wrote: “What these citizens are not being told is that some of the politicians who want their help are or have staff who are part of the so-called ‘homosexual lifestyle.’”

Rogers reported that he took “trips out west and met with folks in the Senator’s region and in the Pacific Northwest” as part of his research. Rogers said he and his advisors are solid on the sources, but they would remain anonymous. Rogers said he tried to contact the Senator, but never got a response from Craig or his staff.”

Until shamnesty, Bennett had a decent record on immigration. February, because I know you didn’t research it, was the month Mitt! announced Bennett as part of his team.

Larry Craig went on network news in 1982 to deny rumors involving cocaine and sex with male pages.

Don’t those things kinda go together? It’s like chips and salsa, or margaritas and salt. What is it about Washington that makes everybody a coke-snorting, page-molesting crook?

PRCalDude on August 27, 2007 at 7:54 PM

Perhaps Craig’s “retirement” and his vote for shamnesty against the overwhelming opposition to it in Idaho, are linked to the knowledge that this event was hanging over his head?

11 June 2007….Craig is arrested
28 June 2007….votes for shamnesty
08 Aug 2007…..pleads guilty to lewd conduct

What dirty little back room deals were made, if any? Craig wasn’t the greatest on immigration, but his support of this bill was beyond the pale.

csdeven on August 27, 2007 at 7:59 PM

Another thought, how many other limp wrist sissy-mary’s besides Craig and Graham voted in favor of this bill against the majority of their constituency?

Is it possible that a bunch of reps who have skeletons in the closet were threatened unless they voted a certain way?

csdeven on August 27, 2007 at 8:05 PM

It is absolutely insane to hold our people to a moral standard that the other side laughs at.

Everytime a Republican litters, the base clamors for a resignation, but let a Democrat be a thief or a serial killer and they will be re-elected.

It is absolutely insane to give the libs an edge like this.

Just set the limp wristed freak up with a date with Barney Frank and move on, but do not give up the seat.

And lastly, what is it about being elected to congress that turns these people (both parties) into such deviants.

JayHaw Phrenzie on August 27, 2007 at 8:09 PM

bradky,

Mike Rogers is the McCarthyite of homosexuals, outing gays who don’t want to be outed, and using it against them politically. As such it doesn’t surprise me that you refer to him and his garbage trolling to make a partisan point.

I thought that the Clinton Doctrine says that sexual activity is a private matter.

Possible, you bet. Probable, certainly.

MNDavenotPC on August 27, 2007 at 8:23 PM

Well, if we keep mainstreaming perversion… you’re going to have mainstream elected officials engaging in perversion… it’s just sad that it’s bled over to our side of the aisle. Please tell me again why I’m wrong to say we ought to purge our party of gays? Oh, because they’ve become part of the elite group that is beyond criticism, as mainstreaming has treated most people to at least one gay friend or family member. Christians, don’t hold your breath to be invited to the “can’t our condemn behavior” club any time in the near future.

Anyway, it’s just sad that this happens again to someone with a freakin’ R next to his name. Sick sob. But, isn’t anyone who doesn’t recognize that it’s not just a coincidence that there are two different genders that have unique parts that are designed to fit together in such a way that it’s the ONLY way to naturally conceive a child, and that knocking on someone’s back door makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. Folks choose to ignore this, again because of the mainstreaming of gays and the whole “hands off” and comparison to black civil rights struggle, etc. But the fact is, “homosexuality” makes absolutely no sense at all, from any logical standpoint. Again, female and male reproductive parts aren’t just a coincidence folks. So if anyone knew this guy was gay, they knew he was disturbed, and should have shoved him out a long time ago…

I’m tempted to drop this party if this kid of sh** keeps happening. The only reason I don’t is because of what the alternative would do to the country as a whole. It’s a shame when we have to put up with this disgusting behavior from people who are supposed to believe the same things we do, simply because the commies in the modern Democratic Party are inches from taking over.

Oh so the messenger is at issue? The point is that this was out last October with statements by Craig denying it. Say Barney Frank and watch the right howl at the moon.

But as The Traveling Wilburys said in Tweeter and the Monkey Man

“Everything in Jersey is legal as long as you don’t get caught” – Is that really what you want the Republican Mantra to be?

Bradky on August 27, 2007 at 8:48 PM

As I stated, I hope Mitt picks better men to suround himself with.
This could have been a killer a few months from now, if by some miricle Mitt was in a heated campaign against the Dems.
The shame is this guy would have taken (no pun intented), what could have been, the front runner of the Republicans down with him. And he doesn’t care.
They ought to force this guy out right now.

All of the candidates better be on the lookout, and aware who is around them. Layoff the porno sites, the “gentlemens club”, the dog fights, the gay bars, playing footsies with men or women.
Just keep it in your knickers, for a year.

bradky,

I know quite a bit about Mike Rogers, since he was really “out” there during the Foley scandal. That is also when I came across Gay Patriot who abhor the tactics Rogers uses, and as I recall, refer to him as a member of the Gay Mafia, albeit in a different context than we are accustomed to.

Since the event we are discussing happened in JUNE, whatever dirt Mike Rogers revealed in October would be about Craig being gay, not about airport bathroom encounters.

Mike Rogers’ agenda is very simple:

Follow his version of the “gay agenda” or be outed as a homosexual. That means, anyone who opposes “gay marriage” for instance is to be destroyed.

I find that repugnant, but since you’re a lib, I’m sure you have all sorts of excuses for it. I bet you just love the Clintons too.

How do all the gays know this code, is their a handbook you get or something?

Bradky,

Gay witch hunts revealed at Gay Patriot.

Do you defend this McCarthyism?

I don’t understand the problem with specifying that the accused is Republican.

Clearly, the media’s standard is to identify the political party of anyone arrested, or suspected of a crime, if that affiliation is not Democrat.

Logic suggests, therefore, that ANY crime-related news story which does not specify the alleged perpetrator’s political party is meant to be interpreted as if the report specified that the accused is associated with the Democratic party.

ANY crime.

Idaho is a very conservative (read: Mormon) State. Things like the Lottery and liquor, although tolerated, are hidden – it’s weird.

TheBigOldDog on August 27, 2007 at 7:17 PM

Umm, what? Hiding liquor and the lottery? There are bars all over the place and giant billboards advertising the lottery just like any other place. Even Utah doesn’t hide the lottery and liquor…

As for the people, being close to Utah is going to increase the number of Mormons, but you still can’t jump without landing on a Californian.

The report specifically states that the police officer realised what Craig was doing and responded to his advances. You’ll also notice that I was concerned with how this was dealt with legally. It is stupid and deplorable behavior from a married Senator. I’m just not sure why they’re treating this as a criminal issue.

As to how I’d feel about him doing this to a 12 year old: consenting adults have exceptionally different rules than children. 12 year olds are also easy to distinguish from grown men in a restroom. He did make sure that it was aa grown man in the stall beside him. It’s scummy behavior that is far below what one should expect of a Senator (there are appropriate ways of conducting things, even adultery, and this wasn’t one of them). It just doesn’t seem to rise to actual illegality.

I don’t know about you but I am sick and tired of these closet queens and psychopaths dictating how I will live, what health care I will receive, who will be allowed into my country, what tax rate I shall pay, what I can do on my private property, etc. Who the hell are these people? Nobody knows them from Adam, but somehow we accept their collective ‘wisdom’ and willingly allow them to force their personal policy preferences on us as the law of the land.

This Republican Party has to come clean, out its misfits and weirdos, or we shall be forced to create a true Conservative Party. Some from the Republicans will be invited. But not all.

How can a party that professes family values and conservatism succeed if there are members out ‘fiddling about’, defying and undermining the values of its constituents? If you’re gay don’t hang onto a beard and pretend to be something you’re not. Be gay for crying out loud and let the voters decide! But no. You pretend your Saint Ronald of Reagan, saying the right things. But get you into a public restroom and it becomes a honeymoon suite. It’s a toilet not a love seat you moron.

Clean house. Now.

It’s a misdemeanor, so “criminal” is a stretch.

Craig is a politician, so the technical aspects of the infraction are really besides the point. He chose to “flirt”, as you put it, with a policeman in an airport bathroom, and that’s all that matters.

That is not statesman like behavior.
