I read it. When does granting 100 percent amnesty become 20 percent of a Bill? Especially when the requirements for qualifying for amnesty qualifies everyone including gang members and 24 hour foot in the door border jumpers.

The 80 percent enforcement included detaining only non-Mexican border jumpers

I didn’t like the smell of Gonzo from the beginning but replacing him with Chertoff is…well…not surprising.
The Dept of Homeland Insecurity is a JOKE so maybe he should appoint someone like Lewis Black or say, Emo Phillips. Actually, I think Ted Nugent would be kick ass and then we could try some teriyaki venison or buffalo on the WH lawn. I’ve never had the opportunity to try either.

CNN says Clay Johnson III, Bush’s chief of staff when he was governor of Texas and a Bush pal from his high school days, is going to be kicked waaaay upstairs from his job in the Office of Management and Budget to succeed Chertoff at DHS. Think Progress calls him a “professional Bush loyalist” who’s unqualified for the job. Hard to disagree. Needless to say, this is par for the course for Bush when it comes to Homeland Security.

There is a certain Bush logic there.

Bush figures that since we are fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them here, he can put stooges into important jobs here and it will be no harm, no foul.

The CNN link you posted as confirmation that Chertoff will be the likely successor now says, “A Senate aide with close connections to the Department of Justice tells CNN’s Dana Bash Chertoff will not be the president’s choice to replace Gonzales.” I hope that aide is right. Appointing Chertoff to AG would dwarf all the seemingly undrawfable appalling missteps made by the administration.

Just stop. We’re tired of the same useless canards. The legislation was written by the same guy who gave us the 1965 immigration act and the 1986 amnesty: Ted Kennedy. I’m tired of rich, upper class whites who employ illegal aliens for convenience’ sake telling me what I need to believe about the issue. The government had zero intention of enforcing any of those laws, and the legislation was written in such a secretive fashion that no reasonable person could conclude that it was anything but completely dishonest.

As for the recess appointment vs. confirmation fight part–Bush only has to worry about a big confirmation fight if he picks someone conservative who has the potential to be effective in the job. Since Bush won’t do that, I’m sure he knows there won’t be any big fight in Congress.
