Coulter didn’t do much to embarrass our side last night on H&C so the Nuge helpfully picked up the slack. Thanks, Ted!

Damn I do love Uncle Ted……He has such a wonderfully old fashioned politically incorrect way of speaking his mind…

doriangrey on August 24, 2007 at 3:10 PM

And yet, a similar bit from Michael Moore or someone on Air America and you guys would be ready to immolate yourselves from rage.

Allahpundit on August 24, 2007 at 3:11 PM

Allah, its part of his bipartisan outreach for his gubernatorial campaign.

Allahpundit on August 24, 2007 at 3:11 PM

Nah, it was pretty dumb, we shouldn’t be giving the lefties this kind of ammo, and Ted knows that.

Bad Candy on August 24, 2007 at 3:14 PM

There’s no hypocrisy in Ted’s comments. Unlike the party of racial equality calling Mike Steele an Uncle Tom. Unlike the party of GLBT tolerance calling everyone who disagrees with them teh ghey. Unlike the endless ‘chickenhawk’ ad hom from people who (supposedly) support the war in Afghanistan, but oddly enough don’t serve there.

TABoLK on August 24, 2007 at 3:16 PM

And yet, a similar bit from Michael Moore or someone on Air America and you guys would be ready to immolate yourselves from rage.

That’s because Moore would be assaulting those who hold to original and fundamental Constitutional rights, whereas Nugent is assaulting those who would and do deny those rights.

Big difference.

The difference between Michael Moore or someone on Air America and Ted is that Ted consistently is making his rude commentary while detracting from those assaulting America or the US Constitution and that Michael Moore or someone on Air America are usually insulting America or trying to destroy the US Constitution.

It is a rather profound difference.

doriangrey on August 24, 2007 at 3:21 PM

And yet, a similar bit from Michael Moore or someone on Air America and you guys would be ready to immolate yourselves from rage.

In view of the Nuge’s machine guns, what kind of prop would Michael Moore or someone on AA use, when ranting against the various GOP candidates?

I don’t know if I’d immolate myself with rage if I saw a similar bit from Moore. He’s so pitiful I’d probably just laugh at him.

As for Air America, does it still even exist?

Bigfoot on August 24, 2007 at 3:22 PM

Well Ted… that might have been a little over the top… but you had every right to say it. We do have free speech you know, and its not just for the left. And if they are offended then I ask… when are they NOT offended ? Its free speech, its not like he was calling anyone a Christofascist or Godbag or anything like that. Now THAT would be offensive, but they would have a right to say that too. Free speech is a good thing… so lets try to hang onto it and not let the left dictate what we can say. Ted can say what he wants, its his show.

Maxx on August 24, 2007 at 3:23 PM

well, he was just trying to be funny in my estimation. The crowd seemed to like it. I took it to be a ‘rock star’ moment where he was likening his ‘machine gun’ to another part of the male anatomy. He did say ’suck on’ the machine gun.

Another difference is that I’m sure the Nuge would consider his commentary ‘entertainment’, whereas Michael Moore insists his rantings are some sort of social disobedience and his ‘right’ to dissent. Moore wants to think he’s the start of a movement. ie, Moore thinks what he says is important to everyone. . . the Nuge knows he’s just an entertainer.

Watch it again, listen carefully to what he says and keep in mind that Ted Nugent is a ardent supporter of the second amendment to the US Constitution. What he is saying is very clear and up front, he is telling Hillary and Obama “You want to take my second amendment rights away, then suck my machine gun…Or, perhaps you are familiar with the other more commonly known version of this statement, “You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead fingers”.

doriangrey on August 24, 2007 at 3:27 PM

Ted has never been one to pull punches or whither in the face of political correctness. I may not always agree with how he presents his message but I will never question his patriotism.

Personally I just don’t care much for the guy, but maybe that’s just me.

“Nugent dodged the draft during the Vietnam War. In an interview for the Detroit Free Press (July 15, 1990), Nugent described how he avoided the draft: He claims that 30 days before his Draft Board Physical, he stopped all forms of personal hygiene. The last ten days he ingested nothing but junk food and Pepsi, and a week before his physical he stopped using the bathroom altogether, virtually living inside pants caked with excrement and stained by his urine.” HT: Debbie Schlussel

Right. This level of dis shows up at almost every Hollywood event. The stuff that riles the right is more like TANG memos and troop bashing.

Don’t remember much more than some “tsk tsk” over the assasin’s wanted “joke”.

On the right the reactions are less intense for much greater provocation. Coulterphobia and Nugepanic is for ninnies self deluded into thinking their support is what wins elections and without it conservatives are sunk.

Ted knows that.

saiga on August 24, 2007 at 3:36 PM

I’m aware that Nugent is an ardent supporter of the second amendment, but perhaps he can support it without saying this sort of thing.

The following is a rough transcript:

Hey Arnold suck on this one time, you putz.

I was in Chicago last week…I was in Chicago and I said hey Obama, you might want to suck on one of these, you punk. Obama – he’s a piece of s**t and I told him to suck on my machine gun. Let’s hear it for him.

And then I was in New York and I said, I said hey Hillary, you might want to ride one of these into the sunset, you worthless b***h.

Since I’m in California…how about Barbara Boxer, she might want to suck on my machine gun. Hey, Dianne Feinstein, ride one of these you worthless wh*re.

Any questions?

Freedom!

Again, this sounds more like an angry, profane rant than any coherent defense of our right to bear arms.

Not that I disagree with the intent of what he’s saying (I’m a NRA member) but it’s how he said it. It’ would’ve been better ahd he said simply, “From my cold dead hands” like Charlton Heston did in his famous speech or something along those lines and not so over-the-top (though that is Nugent’s style). AP is right, if this were any Lefty type screaming for conservatives to suck on a muchinegun then we’d be attacking it and rightfully so.

If more and more of “us” did this kind of thing more often, it would merely level the playing field. The amount of wild-eyed hatred – however cleverly disguised as “your daily news” courtesy of the MSM – spewed from the Left every single day makes Nugent sound like an amateur.

We’ve forgotten what it’s like to live in a world where the Left doesn’t get to set the tone and content of the dialogue. We’re so use to it, we feel we have to accomodate it. That’s why Coulter at her most egregious is the most refreshing.

Whats the point of assembling a large, loud mob if you’re not gonna whip ‘em up a little?

As far as I can tell. Ted is just giving that show to the people who paid to see that kinda thing. Since it comes from LL I assume it was not a televised appearance. What’s wrong with giving the people what they paid for?

As to the equivalance AP is trying to pull from this, an assumably private (non-televised) event rant is not the same as when those celebs of the Left who seek large public (you don’t have to pay to see) platforms do their own rants.

Yes, the foul language and disrespect show to our elected officials (they are, even if we didn’t vote for ‘em) is not the proper way to voice a dissenting view, but that brings me back to my original point. Ted was putting on a show. And it looks like the crowd ate it up. That’s it.

VolMagic on August 24, 2007 at 3:54 PM

I can’t hold draft dodging against just him unless I am willing to also hold it against everybody else too.

I would say that his case was just a mite extreme. In fact I have never even heard of anything else remotly like it.

It was a long time ago and I think he has redeemed himself since.

How has he redemed himself? By acting like a blabbering fool?

I would hate for my patriotism to be judged on what I was doing as a teen in the 60’s.

The support I’m seeing for Nugent in many of these comments is, quite frankly, disgusting. I’m a hard-core gun nut myself, and I used to see Nugent as the eccentric uncle in the gun nut family — the guy was kinda goofy, but I sort of liked his style.

Well, you know what? Forget that. The man has just taken a giant dump, in public and on video, to the public image everyone invested in the shooting sports has been trying to cultivate for years. The Bradys and the Joyce Foundation and their ilk go out of their way to smear gun owners as mentally incompetent, emotionally unstable, potentially dangerous. Nugent just handed them a great big bouquet. They’re going to play this video clip for years, and every single person who fights for second amendment rights is going to have to work harder to overcome the image of Ted Nugent telling Barak Obama to “suck on [his] machine gun.” You think that’s going to make it easier or harder for activists in liberal areas, who have the hardest row to hoe?

Thanks, Ted. Thanks a lot. You have just made every single gun nut in the United States look like a thug and a moron. And you’ve just made yourself look like Alex frigging Jones. This rant should not be applauded by the pro-gun community. This rant should be denounced, at top volume, far and wide. Ted Nugent does not deserve praise, or applause, or defending. And speaking of Ann Coulter, though she might not like Nuge’s style, she’s the first to understand that playing the game so as not to offend or alarm the libs is a no win strategy. Morever, she knows that tiptoeing around so as to not give them fuel to lambast us with is also a losing strategy. Since when did the left gain morals and a care for civilization? They’ve always been about tearing down. Libs will never think nice about conservatives and traditional natural rights as found in the second amendment.

If you actually believed that “so often quoted interview” than you are the buffoon. It was typical of Ted’s aggressive biting sarcastic wit to tell the interviewer exactly what the interviewer already believed rather than the truth.

The events depicted never happened, he was a student on a 1Y deferment attending Oxnard community college, nor did he use drugs, unless you want to count his near addiction to caffeine.

Yes I have met Ted and partied with him. His idea of a party is a BBQ with lots of pretty women lots of coke-cola and lots of things to shoot. No alcohol and no drugs. “Ted, much of your politics is right on, but as a public figure involved in politics your words can be used against all of us, not just you. Please have a little more restraint in the vocabulary you use. Sarcasm doesn’t work well in politics. This restraint will make it easier for all of us to make the changes our society desparately needs.”

Ted was appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association (1995-present)

Guardian on August 24, 2007 at 4:35 PM

I’d say Teddy just made those Liberals a little more sweaty.

KCtheKat on August 24, 2007 at 4:36 PM

So I am guessing that you believe apologizing for your rights will win the day? You believe that your rights will be won by reasonable discussion? Gotta hope your right because the alternative is ugly. But then again the world is an ugly place these days and the left has plans for making it a lot uglier.

PierreLegrand on August 24, 2007 at 4:32 PM

Ted making these types of comments only makes the fight harder. The winner of this fight will be who fought it smarter, and when we stoop to making comments like this (whether sarcastic or not) we only provide ammunition to the enemy.

Hey, Nuge. Quit pulling punches, when talking about the Left! :-)

ToddonCapeCod on August 24, 2007 at 4:37 PM

I agree with Drum. Tip toeing around in a constant state of panic and obsessing about alienating “moderates” and the merdia is a losing strategy.

I’m a gun owner and I don’t agree with Ted Nugent’s militancy. Still Ted Nugent has a right to publically his opinion no matter how stupid it is.

If somebody asks I’d simply say “Of course, I don’t agree with Ted Nugent’s comments, but I unequivocally support the constitutional right of citizens to keep and bear arms.”

Is that so hard?

Mike Honcho on August 24, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Left wing whacks cant complain, dont you remember the Margaret Cho stand up bit where she said Laura Bush douches with lysol etc etc.
They were howling in the audience. Its truly scary imagining a dem president. Im worried because an idiot, flip flopper who made a fool of himself thru out his campaign, John Kerry almost won, Hillary might pull it off if the Fred doesnt get it in gear.

malkinmania on August 24, 2007 at 4:41 PM

Freedom!

Actually it sounds like a typical day at Ace’s.

I’m appalled, but then, I’m appalled by just about everything.

Rightwingsparkle on August 24, 2007 at 4:41 PM

One can usually give leftards a big case of the vapors by quoting P. J. O’Rourke:

In case we have to shoot Democrats. It happened during the Civil War, and it could happen again. PJ O’Rourke, on why Conservatives oppose gun control.

If you want a polite conversation with dimorats you really do have to scare them a little first.

boris on August 24, 2007 at 4:46 PM

He deserves what Jim Zumbo got. And then some.

Well-Armed Lamb on August 24, 2007 at 4:07 PM

You make a good point Well-Armed Lamb. But for all of those who would use this video in an attempt to smear gun owners, I would simply ask them who exactly it was that Ted Nugent shot.

I guess you did not see Maxx’s admonishment to Ochlan on personnel attacks on other commenters, “Personal attacks are not appropriate here, save that for when you are posting at Kos.”

BTW, in spite of whatever you are positive about, 13E20 and 1193.

MB4 on August 24, 2007 at 4:48 PM

Having heard Eddie Vedder waste half a show doing a sermon about evil Republicans, I’d call this equal time.

Ted is accountable to the free market…and the free market of ideas. Freedom of Speech isn’t always pretty…ask the Dixie Chicks.

But I think most Americans are adult enough to make up their own minds. I really don’t give a fig what moonbat blogs have to say about anything. Or their friends in the MSM.

Mike Honcho on August 24, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Yeah, I don’t like his choice of words (but then, I always thought Wang Dang … for all of its serious rockage, was too crude … but that’s rock-n-roll) but why should any of us care what the left thinks? If Ted were up there shouting the Golden Rule, they’d call him a freak. Indeed, the left, like the Islamists, will get you to play their game (PC, ad nauseum) as their strategy to win, and then once victory is theirs, it’s off to the Gulag.
