New Hot Air Headlines page with comments debuts

You asked for it, you got it. The problem we’ve had since the headlines feature debuted was stuff slipping off the front page into oblivion after a few hours, before many of our readers had a chance to see it. The new page solves that by collecting and archiving everything in one place. For ease of reference, here’s a partial snapshot:

hah3.png

As you can see, there’s now a word balloon icon next to each headline, both on the main headlines page and in the headlines box on the front page. Click it and it’ll take you to a page created for that particular item so you can comment on it. (For instance.) If there’s a number in place of the word balloon icon, that means people have already commented on the article. If you don’t care to comment, just ignore the word balloon and click the headline as usual and it’ll take you directly to the article. One reason why it might be worth clicking the word balloon instead of going directly to the article itself is because the new feature lets me pull out and blockquote the best parts of a story to call to your attention. See here, for example. Obviously we’ll use that feature more or less as time permits.

As for the red arrows next to the section header, click those and they’ll take you back through previous headlines for that section.

For the past couple of months I’ve been staggering new headlines by about 25 minutes or so to ensure that it would take awhile before each of them scrolled off the front page and disappeared. Now that we don’t have to worry about that, I’ll probably shoot them out there as soon as I get them, which means they’ll be scrolling pretty fast, especially in the morning. So unless you check the site very, very frequently, odds are you’re going to miss stuff on the front page. That’s where the master headlines page comes in.

Please leave questions, comments, or glitch reports below. We may tweak the section categories; for instance, there’s no obvious category right now for world politics, media bias, or even immigration. If you have any ideas for that, we’re all ears. Many thanks to our webmaster Ed for putting it together for us. Enjoy!

Cool!…..a place to spill my spleen. Thanks HA!

Limerick on August 23, 2007 at 10:42 AM

pretty cool.

shooter on August 23, 2007 at 10:43 AM

Great new update. That has been one frustrating thing where I’ll reference an item I found here and people will later check and not see it.

JammieWearingFool on August 23, 2007 at 10:45 AM

Love it…excellent new feature.

flipflop on August 23, 2007 at 10:47 AM

If you have any ideas for that, we’re all ears.

Would love some more original Vents. But this is a good addition.

thirteen28 on August 23, 2007 at 10:47 AM

How long before Drudge follows your lead?

Danny B on August 23, 2007 at 10:50 AM

Hmm…seems I have to login seperately to use Headlines. Is that an intentional thing?

Bad Candy on August 23, 2007 at 10:50 AM

Woo-Hoo! A paradise for one-liners.

infidel4life on August 23, 2007 at 10:50 AM

Top job, old sport.

Enrique on August 23, 2007 at 10:51 AM

My suggestion is that you guys make a forum that we may discuss topics in greater depth.

Krydor on August 23, 2007 at 10:51 AM

yeah baby! now that karl Rove has some free time, he fixed it!

Ropera on August 23, 2007 at 10:51 AM

Yes!!

StephC on August 23, 2007 at 10:52 AM

Allahpundit You rock dude……I was thinking of suggesting something like this but never got around to it, I guess this is why you are the uber-webmaster-sysop dude here and not me…

doriangrey on August 23, 2007 at 10:55 AM

Many thanks to our webmaster Ed for putting it together for us.

Indeed! Thanks Ed! Great new feature.

rslancer14 on August 23, 2007 at 10:59 AM

Good gob H.A. Staff!

Tony737 on August 23, 2007 at 11:00 AM

Ooops, good *JOB* … maybe I oughta try that *other* new feature, the comment preview!

Tony737 on August 23, 2007 at 11:01 AM

Yeah!

terryannonline on August 23, 2007 at 11:02 AM

Great new feature only complaint was having to log in again.

bj1126 on August 23, 2007 at 11:03 AM

Nice!

Tanya on August 23, 2007 at 11:04 AM

I’m sure the rest of you have had this experience, too.

They put up a headline, and you’re screaming for the chance to put up a comment! BEGGING Bryan or AP to start a thread.

I feel all tingly now. Oh, wait… electronics I repair is shorting out…

Mazztek on August 23, 2007 at 11:10 AM

I’m not complaining, honest. But HA has so very quietly become circa 90 percent Allah, 10 percent Bryan, and 0 percent Michelle. And what’s that smell… could it be the decaying corpse of Vent in the crawlspace?

I love the site, don’t misunderstand. And I can’t imagine how you managed to produce a year of Vents. But the changes seem all sneaky and TNR-like.

And where’s Bethany?

saint kansas on August 23, 2007 at 11:10 AM

What about a category for the right-wing conservative Christian wingnut and Atheist stuff? Man! The Spencer/Derbyshire thread has been a hoot.

BNCurtis on August 23, 2007 at 11:10 AM

First the Preview button and now this. Solid! Love it. Having followed HA from the beginning I gotta say you guys have made some smart decisions on implementing new features. Two thumbs up.

Thomas the Wraith on August 23, 2007 at 11:15 AM

How long before Drudge follows your lead?

Danny B on August 23, 2007 at 10:50 AM

That’s a definite NEVER. He controls the news bro. Intoxicating beyond belief. Post a headline, watch the reaction.

JiangxiDad on August 23, 2007 at 11:16 AM

Ed… your a Genius !! There is no other site in the blogisphere that can touch this. Excellent Work !

Maxx on August 23, 2007 at 11:16 AM

Bethany has moved on, got/getting hitched…

Bad Candy on August 23, 2007 at 11:17 AM

Hey AP, any chance you could add the posting features into the new area?

doriangrey on August 23, 2007 at 11:18 AM

Champagne tonight in celebration! Prosit!

RushBaby on August 23, 2007 at 11:20 AM

Nice job as usual. Keep up the good work and thank you.

Preview button, now this. It’s a great time to be alive.

TexasDan on August 23, 2007 at 11:37 AM

Woowho! Now I no longer am reduced to yelling at my monitor.

- The Cat

P.S. I think that’s the real reason I like blogs; because I can comment, and for the most part it’s not in vain.

MirCat on August 23, 2007 at 11:41 AM

THANK YOU!!!!!

bnelson44 on August 23, 2007 at 11:52 AM

Man, AP, this rocks.

Now, for a slight request (or beg, or plead, or whatever else you might call it).

Can you guys please please please bring back the full text RSS feed?

Please?

Big Bad John on August 23, 2007 at 11:53 AM

My addiction to this sight is now complete.

BowHuntingTexas on August 23, 2007 at 11:55 AM

Just when my captivation was beginning to wane, you go and do this. Have you no mercy. I could be spending hours and hours and hours here. How will I subsist on just news candy and snark. Thanks!…..really.

Thanks guys! Should be a blast. :)

wytammic on August 23, 2007 at 12:07 PM

Well Id rather see Michelle on Fox than here on vent. Means more people get to see her and get to know how great a reporter she is

hopefully allowing the comments can give allah and bryan ideas on what stories we want to debate here.

Makes sending in all those stories worth it

William Amos on August 23, 2007 at 12:11 PM

AH, Bryan, Michelle-

You guys beat the hell out of LGF, FPM and the rest for savvy and set-up.

Kudos!

profitsbeard on August 23, 2007 at 12:11 PM

Exceedingly awesome feature.

jdpaz on August 23, 2007 at 12:13 PM

Ummm, keep a couple of cold beers next to your computer at all times?

doriangrey on August 23, 2007 at 12:00 PM

Sounds like that works for some, however, as hard as I have tried, I just can’t acquire a taste for beer. The only time, I thoroughly enjoyed a beer, was on a canoe trip down the Current; a spring fed river in southern Missouri. It was hot squared as I saw a glint of something as we approached some fast water. I reached down and pulled up a can of Bud, from a previously dumped canoe. Opened it, drank it down and ahhh. Good stuff Maynord.

captivated_dem on August 23, 2007 at 12:18 PM

WOW!!!

pocomoco on August 23, 2007 at 12:21 PM

I like it. A lot. It’s a great idea.

Unless, I’m going blind or illiterate, I didn’t see the nifty buttons atop the comment window. You know, strong, emphasis, etc. Nor did I see a preview button. Can those be added to make this new addition off the charts awesome?

But I also confess, I miss the daily vents as well.

Keep up the good work.

looking4statesmen on August 23, 2007 at 12:23 PM

William Amos on August 23, 2007 at 12:11 PM

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on August 23, 2007 at 12:49 PM

Suh-weet.

BadgerHawk on August 23, 2007 at 12:52 PM

Now what we need, Allah, is a main page that includes the posts in their entirety. The fact that each post must be opened individually is the very worst feature of the site.

clark smith on August 23, 2007 at 12:53 PM

One deficiency with the new comment thing: once a “Headline” becomes a “Blog” or “Top Pick” item all the previous comments are left hanging in the “headline”. Could the early comments be transferred from the “headline”?

jdpaz on August 23, 2007 at 12:54 PM

The only thing I would add to the above comments is that I’m having a delightfully meta feeling commenting on the concept of comments.

Karl on August 23, 2007 at 12:57 PM

One reason why it might be worth clicking the word balloon instead of going directly to the article itself is because the new feature lets me pull out and blockquote the best parts of a story to call to your attention.

Another is being at a government computer where policy won’t let you click through to many of the sources of the headlines. The headlines section has been largely useless to me until now…thanks!

James on August 23, 2007 at 1:02 PM

One small request (yeah, I know it’d be more work): If the comments page had a fair-use block-quote of the money part from any evil site (e.g. NYT), I wouldn’t have to give the b*stards any clicky traffic.

quiggs on August 23, 2007 at 1:05 PM

I sent an email request to Drudge a year ago to do this. Props to the HA folks!

craig on August 23, 2007 at 1:09 PM

Here’s hoping that this feature and AP’s wit make this site eclipse Drudge!

pedestrian on August 23, 2007 at 1:12 PM

Thanks Hot Air. This really help us to feel like we’re helping to take part in the worlds best blog!

Yakko77 on August 23, 2007 at 1:40 PM

Making a great site even better. Muchos gracias!

revolutionismyname on August 23, 2007 at 1:46 PM

Sharp. Nice addition.

Spirit of 1776 on August 23, 2007 at 2:20 PM

Great!

I noticed that my IE title bar doesn’t say “Hot Air” on the page for commenting on headlines. I’m sure you want it to say “Hot Air >> Headline Service ” etc. instead of starting with “Headline Service”.

MamaAJ on August 23, 2007 at 2:24 PM

Gimme back Michelle’s Vents, you can keep the headlines from less worthy sources.

doufree on August 23, 2007 at 2:32 PM

I sent an email request to Drudge a year ago to do this. Props to the HA folks!

I’m gonna email Drudge a request for a date with MKH and then start working out.

saint kansas on August 23, 2007 at 3:01 PM

Another great improvement to Hot Air.

Lawrence on August 23, 2007 at 3:06 PM

Preview Button in Blog Articles: :~)

No Preview Button in Headline Service: :~(

I’m assuming HTML tags still work for formatting comments in the Headlines section, right? The format buttons just make it easier.

common sensineer on August 23, 2007 at 3:57 PM

GLITCH:
When I go to comment on a newswire item, it says that I am NOT logged in.
But when I comment on a regular post, it says that I am logged in.
???

MattSkosh on August 23, 2007 at 3:59 PM

Neat. What happens if a headline gets a large number of comments? Will Allah sarcastically post about it (I hope)?

WasatchMan on August 23, 2007 at 4:14 PM

When I go to comment on a newswire item, it says that I am NOT logged in.
But when I comment on a regular post, it says that I am logged in.
???

I’ve had similar technical difficulties. I’ll click on one article and I’m “Logged in as Bigfoot”, but click on another and I’m “not logged in”.

I’m going to blame it on Al Gore. After all, he created the Internet :-)

Bigfoot on August 23, 2007 at 4:15 PM

I second that not logged in going from one article/post to another. I’m using Firefox 2.06 with Win XP SP4.

This is amazing technology, AP. I asked you for it before and said I had no idea conceptually how it would work.

Well, conceptually you made it awesome by giving each headline it’s own comment capability. I didn’t picture that somehow.

Bravo!

Christoph on August 23, 2007 at 4:48 PM

Having a blast with it, great job HA.

conservnut on August 23, 2007 at 4:53 PM

I hadn’t actually asked for it, but I did think of it quite often.

You guys are mind readers!

Exactly!

IrishEyes on August 23, 2007 at 5:36 PM

AP, this warrants a headline or even a standalone blog post.

From the newly redesigned “Captain’s Quarters”… all my conservative blogs are getting a functionality-lift today…

Did Clinton Lie (snicker, snicker: no way!) About Targeting Bin Laden?

Christoph on August 23, 2007 at 6:28 PM

Very cool! Thanks!

token on August 23, 2007 at 6:56 PM

Fantastic idea. The online version of my local paper allows for comments on any article. The advantage is the pseudo-reporters on my paper see the comments. The downside is they censor them.

While you’re taking requests how about a spell check tab?

RW Wacko on August 23, 2007 at 10:04 PM

Was I asleep at the proverbial wheel? Somewhere between August 15th and 20th, a Preview button appeared… as if by magic! I wonder what it does when I click on it:

Whoa - it WORKS!!!

RD on August 23, 2007 at 10:50 PM

i want to know who writes the headlines, the often make me laugh, whoever does it has a huge talent for headline writing!

zane on August 23, 2007 at 1:16 PM

I’m thinking that’s got to be Allah because of all the Heart-ache’s that show-up, his signature expression.

Maxx on August 23, 2007 at 11:28 PM

Absolutely amazing AP!

No more dreadful Drudge for me, evah!

Watch your traffic go up now!

Only request or idea, is for time/date article was posted to be noted on headline, that would be great.

I am sure I’ll have some more ideas later.

Er…. I thought of something….. emotional counseling for us Immigrationists after any Geraldo Riviera bull crap would be great….

Mcguyver on August 24, 2007 at 12:26 AM

This site just got that much better. I am so impressed with all the work it must take to maintain and keep going! I have to say though, I miss Vent with Michelle. I suppose she’s been busy, considering how often she’s been on Fox filling in for O’Reilly lately etc. Hot Air still rules though!

emmaline1138 on August 24, 2007 at 12:57 AM

Great job with the new Headline functionality, and the preview feature is appreciated as well.

Took the words right out of my mouth!

I often marvel how much better the “WE PICK” headline is than the original.

What I don’t get is…..how come this site isn’t as overrun as LGF? It’s much more entertaining and timely, imo.

To AP and the entire HotAir crew:

Thanks for the new features. Looking good with the Preview button and Headlines thread.

It’s no easy feat to run a joint like this or any responsible news/current events discussion site and keep it out of the weeds and muck these days. Job well done.

Salute.
