I’m with Esthier. Rejoicing after viewing the violent death of an enemy is exactly what the jihadists are known for.
PaisleyCow on August 22, 2007 at 3:38 PM

I hate to steal your "holier than thou" thunder there, Ghandi, but of course jihanddists are NOT known for rejoicing after viewing the violent death of an enemy.

What jihaddists are known for is rejoicing after the violent deaths of INNOCENT PEOPLE. Which is, of course, the exact opposite.

Otherwise though, you make a very good point: self-righteously pretending to solomnly mourn the "tragic" death of this mass murderer can help morally retarded people feel superior to all of us "evil Christians" who don't realize that "terrorists are people too."

I tend to hate videos that show someone dying, but I'm home on leave from Baghdad. Before I left we got a couple mortar rounds each day, rounds which had a better probability of hitting surrounding civilians than they did my fellow military.

The hard reality is that if videos like this discourage people from helping AQI, then they do some good. If we keep course in Iraq there will be a stable democracy and our children won't have to make the same choices.
regards,

Well, I guess You Tube does not run it anymore because it clearly demonstrates that the Jihadists version of You Tube is a home made mortar tube and You Tube does not need to be confused with facts.

I’m with Esthier. Rejoicing after viewing the violent death of an enemy is exactly what the jihadists are known for. While I’m certainly glad this person isn’t around to kill any other people, it doesn’t make me all warm and fuzzy to see a human body explode.

I think AllahPundit pegged some us the other day after posting this video the first time. Though many of us profess to be Christians, the overwhelming reaction to this didn’t seem to be very…Christian. AP’s comments certainly helped me remember that sometimes we need to take a step back and examine how we react to these things.

Bob Owens on August 22, 2007 at 4:41 PM

Proximity weapons airburst, and “proximity” is not measured in millimeters.

Watch the video carefully, it is an air burst. The detonation is approximately 2 to 3 meters from our friendly Jihadist. That is a descending not ascending burst pattern. The blast is coming down on him, not expanding around or ascending up from his position.

1). someone would fire an arcing, typically indirect fire 40mm round, instead of simply shooting him with the rifle the launcher is attached too, and;

(2). that counterbattery radar could fix the insurgnet’s position down to the foot,

I have no idea what you are attempting to suggest with item 1 and as far as item 2, well that is exactly what Excalibur rounds do.

issue coordinates to a 155 battery, fire, have the howizer round travel from it’s location, and impact, all within about 2-3 seconds.

You are assuming facts not in evidence nor even for that matter even suggested. Delivery time would only have a bearing if they were intentionally attempting to hit the 40mm round being fired by the Jihadi. Other than that delivery time is irrelevant to the discussion. Excalibur and SCORPION rounds are self guided proximity munitions and both are accurate to within about a meter.

Stick with occum.

I'll stick with basic physics if you don't mind. And as I said the basic physics here make it pretty clear that he was hit by an incoming round, not a premature detonation of his own round. As to exactly how this was accomplished I cannot say and my speculation regarding Excalibur and SCORPION munitions is just that speculation.

though you’ve shown that you DVR “Futureweapons” religiously.

That and my father-in-law works for ATK Space Systems...So needless to say we spend a bit of time discussing these types of munitions.

This has already been answered, but since I was asked, no I don't think this detonation could have been caused by a hot tube causing the shell to cook off. This seems to be faulty ammunition all the way.

The fact that he is very clearly holding the tube in bare hands suggests to me that the length of this video probably captures the entire attack, and that it was the second round that detonated in the tube.

dorian, you've got some very interesting theories, but the odds of any of your super-accurate wonderweapon scenarioes being accurate are between slim and none, though you've shown that you DVR "Futureweapons" religiously.

Proximity weapons airburst, and "proximity" is not measured in millimeters.

There is also the tiny logical flaws in your argument that:

(1). someone would fire an arcing, typically indirect fire 40mm round, instead of simply shooting him with the rifle the launcher is attached too, and;

(2). that counterbattery radar could fix the insurgnet's position down to the foot, issue coordinates to a 155 battery, fire, have the howizer round travel from it's location, and impact, all within about 2-3 seconds.

AP's comments certainly helped me remember that sometimes we need to take a step back and examine how we react to these things.

I’m with Esthier. Rejoicing after viewing the violent death of an enemy is exactly what the jihadists are known for. While I’m certainly glad this person isn’t around to kill any other people, it doesn’t make me all warm and fuzzy to see a human body explode.

Just like in the cartoons, except he's now helping Mohammad polish Satan's nob.

They must have purchased that mortar from China, and it was 15% cardboard with lead based paint.

you’ll notice that he’s mostly behind a large rock, piece of concrete, or rock pile. That’s what limited most of the effect to right around where the jihadi was located.

That wouldn't change the basic physics involved though. Newton's first and third laws still come into play.

I. Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

III. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The force of the blast as stated in Newtons second law

II. The relationship between an object's mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F = ma. Acceleration and force are vectors (as indicated by their symbols being displayed in slant bold font); in this law the direction of the force vector is the same as the direction of the acceleration vector.

Would be directed away from the greatest mass in it's closest proximity, that would be the ground. His first law comes into play at this point.

What you very clearly do not see is this happening in the video, furthermore Newtons third law would show itself

III. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

"if" the blast were being redirected by an equal or greater mass acting on the blast. In such a case what physics dictate happen would be a nearly spherical blast with a conical trail in the direction of greatest acceleration, which would be away from the Jihadist.

However since what you do see is a blast traveling towards the Jihadist instead of away from him it becomes quite clear that the only way this could happen is an invocation of Newtons first law.

In other words in order for the blast to be traveling towards the Jihadist an external force of substantially greater force had to be acting on the outgoing round fired by the Jihadist.

Considering the rate at which the Jihadist was firing his rounds it isn't even much of a coincidence that the incoming round arrived just as he was firing a round.

What I find interesting is that the incoming round was obviously an proximity round. Well that and that it looks as if it was the proximity to the outgoing round that triggered the proximity detonation.

Not only did the incoming round have a far greater velocity than the outgoing round it clearly was of a far greater kinetic dispersion as well. 155mm Excalibur round perhaps?
