TNR’s Jonathan Chait attacks the Standard’s William Kristol

posted at 9:45 am on August 22, 2007 by Bryan

Chait’s article is another example of TNR’s defense by offense, and it’s the work of a smear artist and a scoundrel. The usual liberal canards are there — right-wingers are thugs, they’re relying on Nazi (or “Weimer-era German right,” to be specific) imagery to sell a war, etc. And all because Bill Kristol pronounced the diaries of Scott Beauchamp what they are, fiction.

Chait does a liberal-rousing job of going through Kristol’s career and making the worst of what he finds. What you won’t find in Chait’s article is a thorough fact-checking of TNR’s own work. Where’s the stratified mass grave, Jonathan? Did your magazine really pose vague, misleading questions to the communications director from the company that manufactures Bradleys? Is there really a street in parched Baghdad with sewage flowing up to a man’s waist? And would troops really stop to change a tire there? Why haven’t we heard from Beauchamp, or more to the point, why haven’t you heard from him over at TNR? A fortnight after the magazine returned from vacation, and still no concrete answers to basic, factual questions.

It may be time to turn the lights out at the New Republic. There seem to be no grownups left over there.

Were there any grownups there to begin with?

While TNR’s exposure as a kiddy camp for budding leftists is disappointing, what has been worse is the relative silence about it over at National Review Online. Unless I’ve missed something, only JPod and maybe Goldberg have had much of anything to say about this, and even then, not so much. What gives? Gild loyalty?

Fred on August 22, 2007 at 9:57 AM

Dear TNR,

There is still shit in your sandbox. Just a reminder.

Sincerely,

Your Friends from the Weekly Standard

But, in the end, a fake thug is not much better than the real thing. Johnathon Chaitt

So, Johnathon, you’re saying “FAKE” is better than “REAL”. (but not by much!)

This explains a lot.

Post-modernism has no role in journalism, yet it is now the TNR methodology.

jediwebdude on August 22, 2007 at 10:04 AM

What a joke. Are they aware of how absurd they look or are they so insulated and enveloped in their own world it doesnt penetrate?

Dash on August 22, 2007 at 10:04 AM

The very presence of Jonathan Chait and Peter Beinart at TNR is condemnationo of the organization. What a couple of libtard douchebags.

Has either one ever written anything other than leftist screed?

Jaibones on August 22, 2007 at 10:06 AM

Jonathan Chait: “Waa-waa-waa Bill Kristol is really mean.”

To quote someone I have great respect for…Boo-freakin-hoo!

Michael Kinsley must want to retch when he is forced to read the tripe they publish these days at TNR.

Jaibones on August 22, 2007 at 10:25 AM

Although it is defense by offense, as I read the article, I think Chait really believes most of what he was saying from the we’re saving America from the mindless warmongers perspective. For example: “Whether or to what degree Beauchamp’s Diarist is true could not matter less to [Kristol].” Actually it matters a great deal to Kristol and everyone else on the right. That’s been pretty much what everyone on this side has been trying to determine. It’s TNR to whom the veracity doesn’t seem to matter as much, as the stories validate the agenda.

I did think the “Weimer-era German right” thing was pretty funny – how to call “Nazi!” without getting a flag thrown and a five-yard penalty for a Godwin’s Law violation.

their world is shaky, but still large. they still feel safe

I see it as progress. They’ve clearly progressed from denial that they passed off fiction as fact to anger over the fact that they got caught.

Next stage, acceptance. I predict that one will take a loooong time to get to, though.

Think they have already “accepted” that they did the right thing.
Dan Rather syndrome.

And yeah there’s progress. These fake lib stories no longer have the legs they once did.
ex. “JINGIS” KHAN KERRY. He ran with that one for 40 years.

Even with full court press, global warming story is cooling.

MSM are cornered rats. Watch for their TET. It will be bad, but then comes tipping point and capitulation. Best and brightest no longer waiting in line for “anchor” slots at networks, editors at newspapers.

JiangxiDad on August 22, 2007 at 10:45 AM

Classic Clintonian strategy. Attack the critics and hope people will forget the criticism. I predict this sort of thing is all the answer TNR will ever come up with, and they think that there is just enough liberal solidarity in the rest of the media that it will just move on. HotAir, Powerline, Malkin, and the rest won’t let this happen, thank the Lord.

WasatchMan on August 22, 2007 at 10:46 AM

Kristol is like Teflon. No worries.

congsan on August 22, 2007 at 10:57 AM

Just another worthless rag doing a dis-service to the United States. For some really sick reason, it seems to be in vouge.

I would’nt whiz on them if they were on fire.

Remember when we were told to never believe anything we read on the web?? It would appear today the roles are reversed.

The 21st Century US and Weimar Republic correlation is laughable on its face.
The liberals were stabbing the Military in the back then and they AREshooting the Military in the back now. Goverments come and go but mealy mouthed pissants are eternal.

ronsfi on August 22, 2007 at 11:28 AM

Weimar Era Right is historically inacurate and pretty funny. The early Nazi party collaborated with the communists against the Weimar. The right wing were royalists (and anti-Nazi and anti-communist). Hitler, who had ties with the military all along, decided that his party needed the support of the military and became anti-communist for that reason. It worked.

They particularly love their “fake” journalists and revel in their fake journalism – see Stephen Glass.

foxforce91 on August 22, 2007 at 12:36 PM

TNR published pieces by Kristol in the early to mid 80s if I’m not mistaken.

Bill survived the pie in the face. He’ll survive this smear.

I have contacted one of his “myspace friends” (when his page first was discovered) and he told me he challenged ButtChump and he admitted it was all BS. That is good enough for me. The rest is all just extra.

Screw TNR…

BadBrad on August 22, 2007 at 3:05 PM

TNR is a joke. You would think they would just admit they were wrong and move on. But no. They continue digging a hole for themselves.

SoulGlo on August 22, 2007 at 4:11 PM

OK, I can now write:
Stupid is a Chait does.

Otherwise, I see no need to spend any more time thinking about the rag formerly known as The New Republic.
