Does every white trash girl in America have a tattoo that she can display along with the top of her thong every time she bends over?

I think…yes.

…the ridiculous tattoo fad.

One might wish. But watching a few minutes of Miami or LA Ink , the idea of “fad” seems a bit optimistic.

Enoch beat me to it, but yeah, isn’t the lower back pretty much a women’s thing? As in “my ass is -> this way, check it out!”

Of course, one should never get a boyfriend/girlfriend’s name…

I have 2. Both have meaning. Getting inked is a personal choice. I don’t, however, think getting a tat just to get one makes much sense. I know quite a few people who regret their decision because they didn’t put much thought into it.

Guilty on 1 account.

In 1968, me and 4 other fellow Marines took a ride into Oceanside CA right outside Camp Pendleton the night before we shipped out to Nam. Each of us paid $5 each for a red and black styized USMC or our left upper arm. (My last 5 bucks too).

It’s kind of faded now over the years…but then again so am I.

Well, it seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

Wasn’t there a SNL gag about tat removal cream? Removing that tat you got when you were 20, but now that you are 40 it looks a little different.

And I hate the preview button. We used to have an excuse for being sloppy.

I have no tat. Nor do I have the piercings to look like I lost a fight with a tackle box. I am so, like, out of it that I don’t even recall if or when I was IN it, and if I was in it, what precisely IT was. Life is good.

All my opinions of tattoos has been covered in an old PSA by Red vs. Blue. I can’t link the original, as it’s behind a registration wall.

Rather than posting my thoughts… here’s the link on youtube… (mild language warning)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bnrhe8m2te4

Now, he has two simple points.

1) Tattoos are permanent.
2) You are a g**d*mned idiot.

And he does elaborate on #2 to cover it in a clear concise fashion…

gekkobear on August 21, 2007 at 12:27 PM

Reminds me of a story I saw on some news channel once. The fad at the time was chinese character tats. They found a chinese guy that reads chinese characters to decipher some of the most popular character tats. My favorite was the big macho dudes reaction when he was told his tat said “gullible white boy”. Bwaaahaaa.

Guardian on August 21, 2007 at 12:31 PM

None, not even the chick tat. I could never bring myself to get 1, b/c I always pictured myself at 60 with something really stupid.

It is a personal choice, but enough with the fad part of it already! That also contributed to me abstaining…I couldn’t do what had become a fad. Hurt too much…fads, not tats.

EnochCain on August 21, 2007 at 11:42 AM

I think you misinterpreted where I was going with that. Since I don’t have any tattoos, I hate other peoples’ tattoos… including my wife’s. Whom, by the way, very much regrets it, so I’ve never had to tell her I’m not fond of it.

Editor on August 21, 2007 at 12:59 PM

I, too, am somewhat nonplussed at this tattoo fad.

On the other hand, I’m not exactly about to turn down any overtures from hot babes because they decided to paint road signs on their ass.

Unless it’s, like, a Swastika or a Mao head or horror movie character or something like that. Because, how creepy would that be?

Oh, and there was that one lady with the red hourglass tattooed above her bellybutton.

gekko – I loved that PSA – they should show that on TV every day! :)

I have a tattoo.

A simple cross, cracked, but still strong.

I had it done 2 days after my husbands homecoming from Afghanistan. A member of his squad wasn’t there at homecoming – he had returned much earlier – he was KIA on 11/01/04.

To you, a tattoo may scream loser or trailer trash. To me, it has great significance and always will.

I don’t regret it – and don’t particularly care what you think of it, or me for that matter.

Let’s limit our universal condemnation to lower back tattoos, shall we? I think we on the right need the support of every good old boy with Mom tattooed on a beef-fed bicep.

NeoConNews on August 21, 2007 at 1:42 PM

It’s a personal choice, of course. But as I told all of my kids, tattoos are not like fashion fads that you’ll laugh at in old pictures, like Earth shoes and wide ties, and wonder, “What was I thinking?” A tattoo is forever.

I was in the service but never got a tattoo, possibly because I was traumatized by an episode of “Empire” back in the early ’60s, in which Ryan O’Neal is beaten up by hoodlums who threaten to put tattoos all over his face. He wakes up in an alley next to a tattoo parlor with his face all swollen and runs to a window in a panic, only to find that they just beat him up and didn’t tattoo him. I’ve never forgotten that.

rivlax on August 21, 2007 at 1:51 PM

Nobody “lit up” the tattoo “fad”. The placement and content were the joke, not tattoos in general.

If you don’t like tattoos, don’t get one. Just do us all a favor, and don’t act all superior about it. Nobody is impressed by your lack of ink.

thebriand on August 21, 2007 at 1:53 PM

I have 3. I get a new one about every 4 years. All are covered by a short sleved T-shirt. They are for my benefit, not anyone elses.

Worst tattoo evah belongs to a gal who works at a local restaurant. On the left side of her neck in 2″ cursive letters it reads “B!tch”.

Contratulations on your life choice of making $5.75 per hour!

natesnake on August 21, 2007 at 2:12 PM

Oh, I should also mention my hypocrisy. As much as I like my tattoos, I prefer the women I date not have them.

In my opinion, the female form is perfect without them.

I’m a hypocrit.

natesnake on August 21, 2007 at 2:16 PM

Anyone ever read “Et Tu, Babe” by Mark Leyner? His whole vision of visceral tattoos may be on the money.

thebrokenchair on August 21, 2007 at 2:17 PM

Good lord, some of you act like having a tattoo is treason or something. Tell you what, if you wanna look down on that 21 yr old that just got a frikkin dolphin wrapped around her belly button, go for it, cuz they’ll hate it in 10 years (or days). But for many folks tattoos are personal, symbolic choices that they revere about themselves and don’t do it to impress anyone. If I’m wearing shorts and a t shirt, you can’t see a single one of mine (not that there’s anything wrong with the exposed ones either). I didn’t get them to show them off.
How childish and superficial do you have to be to condemn people with tattoos? Disapprove for yourself if you like but if your respect drops immediately for folks with tatts, you are a simplistic child.

SouthernDem on August 21, 2007 at 2:21 PM

Jaibones on August 21, 2007 at 11:42 AM

I don’t know what qualifies as “white trash.” But come out to the beaches here in So Cal, or the burbs or the sticks and you’ll see a bunch of young, fun-loving girls with tats. You bet some are brainless wonders. But some are just young and unafraid. They probably think tattoo removal is going to get as good as breast augmentation – you can’t always tell.

I mentored a valedictorian with near perfect SATs who is a church going, good kid. He wants a tattoo in memoriam to his father. I worked with a woman who got matching tattoos with her sisters after their mom died of Cancer. Another friend and his wife had their ring fingers tattooed as wedding rings – they have a beautiful family and are very charitable, upstanding people.

***

My respect for someone drops immediately if they have a tattoo. It screams “Loser”.

lorien1973 on August 21, 2007 at 1:05 PM

Nothing screams “loser” more than screaming it yourself.

***
This discussion illustrates how the right is just like the left. Prejudging those with tats is no different than prejudging someone who wears a cross. No matter what value you ascribe to your personal adornments, somebody out there is ready to judge you and your life.

Some of you people complaining about others’ tats should post your photos, so we can determine how stupid we think you look.

I have no ink. But boatloads of my friends do – some of which are military, cops and guys that work 16 hour days. Some of the people I know with ink are idiots. But then again, so are some the Republicans I know.

Dems kinda have the market cornered on looking stupid. But Republicans take the cake for thinking they don’t.

Sure, some of you are joking, but it feels like I’m wading in the shallow end of the gene pool. What a bunch of crotchety, judgemental know-it-alls.

The Race Card on August 21, 2007 at 2:50 PM

jeffshultz on August 21, 2007 at 2:57 PM

It’s amazing how people jump to conclusions that everyone who has a tattoo is weak or trash or a loser.

I have a tattoo, on my lower back. It wasn’t something that I just jumped into because everyone else is doing it. I have always wanted one there, even BEFORE the fad. It took me 10 years to find something that I really liked, that was simple that I knew I could live with.

It is the outline of a dragon-fly, just black, not too big. I absolutely love it and if that makes me trashy or a loser, well, I guess I will wear your lable with pride.

Ronsfi, you might be joking. But I am actually ashamed that I referred to the usage without noting how derogatory I think it is.

I think this term is second only to “nigger” in its offensiveness. It’s classist and base. Try a little exercise. Substitute “white trash” with “white nigger.” See how offended people are then.

I think we should find less offensive language to refer to people. If one cannot describe you in terms other than your physical appearance, they probably don’t know you that well. That goes for sexual, racial and stature objectification.

I don’t think most people are as offended by its use as I am, but I am offended at the term “white trash.” I should have made that clear in my previous posting.

Despite my rant, I think we can all laugh together at any man who has a tattoo just above his butt.

Jeeze – some people are little sensetive about the tattoos they don’t care what anybody thinks of.

Editor on August 21, 2007 at 5:17 PM

IMHO- a Tat on a woman screams whore especially the tramp stamps.

Why do you think they call them “TRAMP” stamps

I know I will piss off all the inkers but that is the perception of most people like it or not.

There is the old story first perceptions and it is true.

It seems apparent at least to me, that folks with tattoos are trying to say something.

Some want just say they are cool
Some want to make the “I wont be ruled by convention statement”
Some want to show association with the under class
Some want to show association with the under world
Some do it for tribal custom.
Some do it because they think it looks sexy
Some do it on a dare
Some do it because they are drunk
Some do it because they think it makes them look like a bad ass.
Some do it because they are delusional dumb Asses.
Some do it because they are in the military.

Whatever their reasons for doing it, I reserve the right as a free man to prejudge them harshly.
I like to generalize so I just throw them all in the trash category.
I’m just redneck that way.

Any good white trash person worth his salt wouldn’t be offended by the term white trash. At least I am not.

The problem with racist slurs isn’t the problem of the bigot that uses it but the person that is offended.

When someone calls me a “INSERT SLUR HERE”, I just say “yeah what ever”

By limiting in any way, anyone’s right to use any word or phrase leads to tyranny of thought.

TheSitRep on August 21, 2007 at 5:32 PM

Holy crap. I think I’ve been called a “loser” by a gamer-nebbish sporting a “Lord of the Rings” handle. What is this world coming to?

MikeZero on August 21, 2007 at 7:38 PM

Tuesday fun indeed.

Come on, folks. Lighten up a little, huh?

I would absolutely love to see you try calling a woman with tatts a whore in public. I bet the best you can do is type it.

SouthernDem on August 21, 2007 at 8:20 PM

My children’s names on my upper left arm. No regrets ever.

Tattoos are for sailors, bikers, and hookers. That’s it.

packsoldier on August 22, 2007 at 12:37 AM

Wearing a tattoo is like wearing the same shirt everyday for the rest of your life. Even I’m not that conservative.

I think it’s more like having to wear that shirt in the corner of your closet that you never wear anymore.

“Welcome to Jamaica! Have a nice day.”

Ha! Classic!

My respect for someone drops immediately if they have a tattoo. It screams “Loser”.

lorien1973 on August 21, 2007 at 1:05 PM

My respect goes down for someone who can be so superficial.

JVelez on August 21, 2007 at 1:15 PM

That’s pretty much what he said, isn’t it? Literally speaking, tats are ALL superficial.

I don’t automatically presume that someone with ink is a loser. However, a great majority of them manage to prove it before too long. Unless you’re a computer programmer/biker who gets an Apple logo tat.

Proud to be 100% tattoo-free.
