The title is banal but the synopsis is very, very promising:
Examines the various conspiracy theories espoused on the Internet, in articles and in public forums that attempt to explain the 9/11 attacks. It includes theories that the World Trade Center was brought down by a controlled demolition; that a missile, not a commercial airliner, hit the Pentagon; and that members of the U.S. government orchestrated the attacks in hopes of creating a war in the Middle East. Each conspiracy argument is countered by a variety of experts in the fields of engineering, intelligence and the military. The program also delves into the anatomy of such conspiracies and how they grow on the Internet.
This is the least they could do, really, after poisoning the well in Australia last year.
If you’re watching, consider this an open thread for comments. Read this, too, before you tune in. It’ll make you feel all glowy inside.
Update (BP): THC’s two-hour show was basically the video version of Popular Mechanics’ superb debunking of all things related to the Troofers, and will on that basis alone be rejected by those obnoxious half-wits who produced Loose Change and all their various acolytes, parasites and fellow travelers. The bulk of Truthers are neither intelligent enough, honest enough nor brave to confront the reality that 9-11 brought to our shores: Jihadists bent on destroying our way of life in order to bring out a global caliphate are capable of and willing to kill thousands of our citizens while they work, play and fly off to vacations or visit family. These jihadists can only be appeased by our blood.
The fact is, Truthers are impotent in the face of 9-11 and the world it exposed. Truthers can’t deal with that day, and they can’t understand it on its own, so they have to rewrite it. This clip ought to become an anti-Truther nugget posted far and wide. It perfectly diagnoses their narcissistic mental illness.
Update: Captain Ed ID’s the silliest moment from the program. I agree, and will cut the clip tomorrow.
Update (BP): Yup, I laughed out loud at that one too. Anyone who says what Jones said about Galileo does not deserve to be taken seriously when he says anything else on any subject, including reciting the spelling of his own name. He’s a moron.

The most frightening thing about the 9/11 Truthers is what their assertions indicate about how education has degenerated in the past couple of generations. Nearly all of the reasons that the Twin Towers fell point to Einstein’s simple (yet complicated) conclusion that E=mc2.
We all know that a goodly portion of us forty-ish persons didn’t learn about the implications of that equation via formal primary and secondary education. (I know I didn’t.) So you can guarantee that all too many of our children and grandchildren aren’t learning about that particular Jooo “revelation.”

The entire 9/11 truth movement disgusts me, and I really don’t think its a laughing matter like some of the people in this thread seem to.
These people have twisted and distorted history to the detriment of American democracy and ultimate confidence in and success of the war on terror.
The lies have survived because people (myself included) just laughed at them after 9/11. Well, we need to move beyond laughing and move to shaming and ostracizing them. Now, more than ever, Ron Paul needs to be removed from the presidential debates, if not the Republican party.

Well I saw the whole thing and I’ll just mention two of the many many things which are so wrong with this conspiracy. One, “truthers” don’t ever tell us why we did this to ourselves, they just imply Bush is evil and building an evil empire (they don’t mention where this evil empire is either). Two they all have that wild eyed crazy don’t you see the giant spiders crawling on the wall look. They are the ones who are just plain evil and crazy.
I agree that no one and not a shred of the ton of evidence presented will change their beliefs. For some reason they want to/have to believe the U S led by Bush is evil. What utterly pathetic people

Honestly, I’d really like to know how E=mc^2 explains that, politics aside.

I watched the midnight (central time) run of this, and my only complaint is that they should’ve gone more in depth with some of the debunking. For instance, illustrate why cell phones could work instead of just saying that they could. I suppose it was for time purposes (this could easily have run 3-4 hours), but I just wanted an even bigger sledgehammer dropped on the conspiracy theorists.
Afterwards I went to the Loose Change forums to see what they were saying about this. Oh man. That site is riddled with crazy. Weapons-grade obtuse crazy slathered in denial sauce. I spent about an hour going thru those forums, and just…wow. There is nothing remotely resembling rational discourse, contrary voices are denigrated, shouted down then banned, and the circular (il)logic employed is just astounding.
The thread on Korey Rowe’s arrest for desertion from the Army (Marines?) is a clinic in tortured logic: He vowed to uphold the Constitution, the Iraq war is illegal (thus un-Constitutional), so he has “every right to desert” - even the duty to, because his continued service is tantamount to involuntary servitude, thereby violating the 13th amendment. Plus breaking a “military code” isn’t a violation of law, and even if it was, the Bush administration’s highjacking of the military transforms it into a criminal corporate enterprise, rendering any and all military laws invalid. Oh, and the government murders people who don’t pay their taxes. Perhaps they killed Leona Helmsley.
I need a shower.

Well, mjgreco, I reckon’ we are all pretty disgusted, but, if we let this get to us, we would all end up like the moonbats, always angry and unpleasant. You have to look at the humorous side, as well as just laugh at these people, especially on the ‘net.
I have met some of these Truthers. In person, I just walk away. They aren’t worth it.
William Teach on August 21, 2007 at 6:50 AM
There has been several people, including myself, who have raised the bar when “debating” with these truthers. While the majority of people will laugh at them, the minority of people are willing to take them head on and expose them for the BS they are. There is plenty of debunking sites, such as 911myths.com, the Screw Loose Change blog, and my Screw Loose Change video.
I’ve only seen small clips of this so far. The only thing that really annoyed me was the Pentagon video because it’s very inaccurate.
MarkyX on August 21, 2007 at 7:31 AM
I used to wonder why these people bothered me so much until I realized Troofers are to 9/11 as Intelligent Design is to Evolution. Watching Loose Change for me must be like a paleontologist visiting the Creation Museum. People point to the dinosaur wearing the saddle saying, “Look, its SCIENCE, now everyone MUST believe what I do.” Sorry, the Creation Museum isn’t science and neither is Loose Change. Both beliefs are based on faith.

All I remember is 3000 people dead countless injured, lives ruined and the people who are actually given airtime to spew their hate and vitrole at the victims in the name of politics and BDS

I wasn’t saying that I subscribe to Truth movement at all. I think that their cause is disgusting, and that in any other country in the world except America they would be silenced one way or another. What I’m saying is that it is good to learn what they say the “facts” are, that way if you encounter a truther at work, school, wherever, instead of just letting them spout fallacies that go unchecked and unrebutted you can respond to them, and even be one step ahead of them. My interest in the subject came about because in an Advanced Writing class there was a Truther that was always very vocal, so one day I had it and responded, and it became a two day debate which I won handily. (I think my best line was, “if President is so smart as to bring down the WTC with explosives and have no whistle blowers, why did he forget the WMDs in Iraq?”) I think a little knowledge into the Truthers world is a powerful took to destroy their (lack of) logic.

Probably the aspect of the 9/11 conspiracy theories that bothers me the most is the insidious nature of them. Instead of having the ability to accept that sometimes there are people in the world who hate us, these theorists really have to bend over backwards to explain that, no, people in the world don’t really hate us, it was George Bush or Dick Cheney or Karl Rove. There is a darker reasoning that just chills me to the bone. And really that is that the Jews did it. As much as I’ve made fun of that theory, it actually makes me rather sad. We’re not even a full century from the Holocaust and the shadowy Jews did it. Except now it’s covered in rhetoric that it was Mossad or the Israelis or the Zionists. If that’s the case, I guess that means I was involved (Zionist here). But in reality, it is borderline or complete anti-Semitism that drives this. Jews run the banks, Jews run the media, Jews are constantly involved in brutal and terrible events to make money - all theories straight out of the Protocols and Der Sturmer.
Perhaps the History Channel shouldn’t have given these kooks an audience. Perhaps we should just bury our collective heads in the sand about these theories. But acting like they aren’t around is much like the Holocaust Denial that still pervades this world and is getting worse. I really believe the only way to fight a “theory” is to hold it up to the light of day and let it wither under facts.
Of course, I still really think that these 9/11 conspiracy people just don’t have the maturity or logic to understand that Muslim terrorists really hate us. And want to kill us all to make their perfect caliphate world. It’s a scary scary thought. But that’s just the way it is.
mjk on August 21, 2007 at 9:00 AM
I wouldn’t accept the History Channel’s explanation or interpetation of events as gospel. Far to much of what is explained on the History channel is “European Speak” or “Liberal Speak”.
oldelpasoan on August 21, 2007 at 9:01 AM
The Creation Museum doesn’t weaken us in the face of a serious threat, and doesn’t trivialize the deaths of 3,000 who were murdered right in front of all of us. I’m sorry, but your analogy between the Truthers and the Creation Museum is close to idiotic.

Its always AMAZES me that there could be a game show the BLOODY OBVIOUS because some(many) people will never ever get it. (With apologies to Basil Fawlty)

trutherism is a “narcissistic mental illness”
that has got to be one of the best tags I’ve ever seen.
That absolutely nails it.
One Angry Christian on August 21, 2007 at 10:33 AM
Is that seriously an exhibit? Looks like some people are trying to give Truthers a run for their money!
jambus59 on August 21, 2007 at 10:54 AM
You want a THC conspiracy? Why was there a flacid re-run of “Human Weapon” on in last week’s “Dogfights” timeslot? The website claims now the show has been moved to Thursdays, but gives the impression that this week’s episode is the MiG-15. What happened to the SPAD show that should’ve been on last week? What are they hiding? I want answers!
Blacklake on August 21, 2007 at 11:12 AM
BohicaTwentyTwo,
I completely disagree. In fact, the more I learn about the subject, the more I’m convinced that supporters of Darwinian Evolution are closer to troothers while ID supporters follow the scientific method much more closely. Here is why:
All the “proofs” I’ve seen for Darwinian Evolution begin with a conclusion: There is no designer.
Troothers also begin with a conclusion: The government is lying. Muslim terrorists didn’t do it (at least not without help from the government).
Both of these belief systems violate the scientific method where reaching a conclusion is the last step.
EWTHeckman on August 21, 2007 at 11:34 AM
Let me get this straight. A massive governmental conspiracy involving hundreds if not thousands of people, the government can keep all those people silent but cannot shut up a piece of prepubescent masturbator like Dylan Avery and his gap toothed sidekick?

How the hell did Bush and Cheney survive flying those planes into the WTC towers
Super kevlar full body suits?
Those evil geniuses!
profitsbeard on August 21, 2007 at 1:03 PM
Heh. I believe this too: it’s a mental illness. Not much point in trying to argue with them then, huh? It’s like people who say that Christianity and Islam are both equally violent. Might as well scream at a wall.
PRCalDude on August 21, 2007 at 1:06 PM
Its all pseudoscience in the end. Attacking one theory in the absence of evidence of another.
That’s not a conclusion. At best, its an assumption although I cannot see how one can not assume something.
BohicaTwentyTwo on August 21, 2007 at 1:34 PM
One of my favorite quotes EVAH!! And it totally fits troothers…tho, I’m not sure how Adam would take that.
tickleddragon on August 21, 2007 at 2:35 PM
BohicaTwentyTwo,
Here’s part of the judge’s ruling from the Dover case on evolution:
One key error in this statement is equating “methodological naturalism” with the “scientific method”. “Methodological naturalism” is a philosophy of science which insists that the only possible explanation for a phenomenon is a natural explanation. The “scientific method” is the process of steps taken to determine why something works as it does, in other words: Make an Observation, Create a Hypothesis, Test the Hypothesis, Reach a Conclusion.
Richard Lewontin, professor of Genetics at Harvard University put it this way:
In other words, Intelligent Design is not an answer we will accept, no matter where the evidence leads us. That is far more than an assumption. It is a conclusion.
Do you remember when the hunt was on for the Beltway Sniper? We kept hearing that the police were looking for a white man in a white van. Imagine what would have happened if the two black muslims who were actually caught had been released because they weren’t white men. You probably would have screamed bloody murder because they would have ignored where the evidence to stick to a previously chosen position which was obviously wrong.
Maybe you should check up on Anthony Flew. He used to believe that Darwinism was true. In fact, he was one of the leading proponents of Darwinism much like Richard Dawkins is now. But he has enough intellectual honesty that he realized that Darwinism violates a number of natural laws and is not supported by the evidence. That doesn’t make him a Creationist either. He is still a hard core atheist.
