Schieffer to McCain: The base hates you because you support the war, right?

Can someone in the news business really be this ill informed? Well, yeah, although in Arianna’s defense I think hers was less a case of genuine ignorance than a heavy-handed attempt to advance the anti-war agenda by spinning McCain’s poll numbers as proof that even Republicans had turned against the war. Greenwald, horrified at the prospect of Democratic electoral gains being rolled back by an erroneous meme favorable to the GOP, moved quickly to remind her that the base is very much on the wrong side of public opinion on this and voters shouldn’t forget it. Which brings us to the clip. What’s Schieffer’s excuse? Just trying to get St. John to say out loud that his disastrous immigration policies have been disastrous to his campaign? As much as I relish the thought of that, I’m … skeptical. Besides, McCain doesn’t really admit that here: he admits the issue’s hurt him but insists once again that he’s right, dead right, and you just relax and trust him, okay? Which ought to push his poll numbers a tiny bit lower.

That’s the first half of the clip. The second half is actually a defense of McCain, since Drudge decided to sandbag him this morning by linking to a video that didn’t fairly represent his comments about Hillary. Geraghty already called him on it. Compare the Drudge clip to the full exchange that follows.

Yeah- his poll numbers dropped because he was too Republican for the Republican nomination. Couldn’t have anything to do with immigration and all the other times he went out of the way to screw the base.

Schieffer is dumb, but no one is that dumb; all the front-runners are against a precipitous withdrawl. Schieffer’s just playing to his lefty fan base; if there’s any kind of motivation I can’t think of what it is unless I’m wrong and he’s a complete moron who can’t formulate strategy.

At least she admits she has a bias. The supposedly “objective” media? Um, nope.

amerpundit on August 20, 2007 at 5:27 PM

Heh! Thanks for the laugh Allah!

I guess today is a good day to be a republican concerned citizen.

Darnell Clayton on August 20, 2007 at 5:28 PM

Hmm lets see, how many illegals crossed the Southern Border today? 10,000? There’s my evidence that the Federal Government is not serious about enforceing the border. Now Senator McCain, where is your evidence that the government is serious about enforceing the border?

Senator McCain, you are lying to me again.

Zetterson on August 20, 2007 at 5:35 PM

“As President I’ll SAYI’ll secure the borders”

Freudian Slip? Hmm still not convinced. Go figure.

Average of the last four polls (The recent ones: Rasmussen, Gallup, Quinnipiac and American Res. Group) from RCP:

Giuliani 29%
Thompson 17%
Romney 15%
McCain 11%

she is a liberal Democrat. I’m a conservative Republican.

LOL! Really?

MB4 on August 20, 2007 at 5:47 PM

Depends on which poll you prefer; Rasmussen today has it at:

Rudy Giuliani at 29%
Fred Thompson at 22%
Mitt Romney 13%
John McCain 11%

I suspect Rasmussen’s poll leans more conservative since they focus on “likely primary voters”, while others like Gallup often poll Republicans and “Republican leaning independents”. In some states Independents can’t vote in the primary, and tend to be less likely to vote in the primary in those states they can.

I’d be surprised if Rudy’s numbers didn’t drop once his opponents hammer him on abortion, immigration and his personal life. It’s too soon to for any crystal ball reading though.

Which pollster will be most accurate? Who knows. In any case McCain is treading water, and the sharks are circling.

McCain has become his own worst enemy by teaming up with liberal extremist idiots like Feingold. I don’t understand Schieffer question at all. Unless Schieffer is that clueless and uninformed.

Kini on August 20, 2007 at 6:08 PM

Shieffer: Is it your stance on the war why your base thinks you completely suck?

McCain: No! It’s my immigration policy, STUPID!

/There fixed it!

dddave on August 20, 2007 at 6:10 PM

How about you just SUCK in general, McVain?

Your pandering got you distrusted…
Shamnesty got you booted from the race.

Deal with it you arrogant dhimmi-loving moron.

tickleddragon on August 20, 2007 at 6:38 PM

Believe me, I’m no supporter of John McCain. But I think his statement in this clip about immigration is correct. That the government has not convinced the American People it is serious about enforcing immigration law. And that eventually we’re going to have to face the problem of what to do with 20 million people who are here illegally.

Some of the illegals certainly must be deported, including criminals of all kinds (convicted criminals, absconders, identity thieves, fraudulent voters, gang members, etc). The fight will be over how diligent the effort will be to identify those people. The rest of the illegals will be allowed to stay after immigration is brought under control.

Has she ever talked to a Republican? This is like declaring the Earth is flat.

frankj on August 20, 2007 at 6:51 PM

Well lets see, McCain supports the war against the jihadists. Thats a +. Now the -, Supports shamnesty, there’s McCain Feingold, also, seems like he voted for gun control bills in past years, the Clinton years. NO, I think the – far outweighs the +.

Deal with it you arrogant dhimmi-loving moron.

tickleddragon on August 20, 2007 at 6:38 PM

Not fair. And completely inaccurate.

Christoph on August 20, 2007 at 7:05 PM

McCain is tone deaf. He actually started to drink his own Kool-Aid.

She was actually married to one.

Trust John the McInsane.? I’m glad he can sleep well at night. I’m sure he or his brood doesn’t have to worry about paying $5,850 a year in health ins. and we never have even used it in 6 years now..paying for all his freebee ANCHOR BABIES births is hurting the heck out of me and my family and soon I will just go without health ins. I like Mitt’s idea for the ins..And don’t let me forget about his nice illegals who ran me and my family out of our own home..A home I worked to restore for over 15 years of my life. All on record at the police dept. who after 3 years of it,finally told me it was best if I moved..once you lose their support you know its time to go..So I’m glad Johnny and his family sleep well at night..what more could we ask for.

McCain doesn’t support war against the Jihadist – remember, he’s against enemy combatants being tried in military courts, is against ‘torture’… In other words, he’s the closest thing al Qaeda could have in terms of representation in the US senate (Barbara Lee fills that role in the House).

His advocacy of the surge has nothing to do with confronting the Jihadists, since it prevents Muslim on Muslim warfare in Iraq, which would tend to weaken al Qaeda, not strengthen it.

Tell us how you really feel. It sounds like you’re holding back.

The Race Card on August 20, 2007 at 7:23 PM

Thanks infidelpride, I didn’t realize that, although I knew his position on torture, I stand corrected.

2theright on August 20, 2007 at 7:39 PM

McCain’s service was heroic, but his time since then has been spent negating that sacrifice.

His mixed stance on War against Islamofascism has nothing to do with his plummet in the polls:

It’s The Shamnesty, Stupid.

profitsbeard on August 20, 2007 at 7:57 PM

Stick a fork in him, he’s done

TheSitRep on August 20, 2007 at 9:32 PM

Must watch video from genius political analyst, McCain lovers (it’s gold throughout, but the McCain money shot is near the end): LiveLeak.

Christoph on August 20, 2007 at 9:38 PM

There are a lot of good comments already posted here.

What sunk him?

McCain/Feingold speech-crime legislation
Support for illegal immigration
Pro abortion
Too old
Too liberal

It’s too bad. At one point in his political career I think he could have done a decent job as CINC.

Mojave Mark on August 20, 2007 at 10:30 PM

McCain’s tenure as a U S Senator will come to an end in 2010. He’s like John Edwards. He will not be re-elected from his own state. How serious should he be considered on the national stage?

volsense on August 21, 2007 at 9:43 AM

That McCain is insane! What with his wanting to win the war and all! Everyone knows conservatives WANT OUT NOW! Also, where’s the nearest commune, I want to see what my right-wing brothers are up to?

Bah. Stupid.
