Hillary to VFW: We’re making military progress, so let’s pull out; Update: Dems fret that Petraeus may report progress; Update: Petraeus to testify on 9/11?

I can’t find the actual speech and the Times’s account says nothing about it, but the AP sounds pretty sure:

New military tactics in Iraq are working but the best way to honor soldiers is “by beginning to bring them home,” Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton told a veterans group Monday.

Clinton, seeking the Democratic nomination for president, praised the work that soldiers have done in Iraq but described the Iraqi government as “on vacation,” leaving American troops in the middle of a sectarian war.

Carl Levin and John Warner, just back from Iraq, say the same thing. Media coverage of the successes in Anbar has now reached the point where they can’t credibly claim there’s been no progress of any sort, so they’re emphasizing the political stalemate. The question is, as it’s been all along, whether military success is a necessary precondition to political reconciliation or whether the opposite is true. Read Grim’s response to the seven soldiers’ op-ed in the Times yesterday for more thoughts on that. If it’s true that one side needs to be thoroughly defeated to force them to compromise politically, then arguably the surge is making that less possible notwithstanding the progress in Anbar. Sunnis under siege from Al Qaeda might be more willing to make a deal with the Shiite government to provide security; Sunnis with their own militias and control of their own territory, by contrast, might be more willing to press their luck and hold out for better terms. On the other hand, from a standpoint of pure U.S. self-interest, having two sides armed and willing to pound AQ is the preferred outcome, whatever it may mean for their relations towards each other. I guess the optimal solution is figuring out the precise amount of Sunni empowerment such that they’re capable of keeping terrorists out but not so capable that they think they can retake the country.

Here’s Rush’s remix of Hillary’s new ad, by the way. Amusing, although I’m not sure what he means by troops in Iraq being invisible to her. She’s been there three times. Click the image and scroll down to watch.

Update: The left braces for a nightmare scenario: good news from Iraq. I like the euphemisms the AP finds here for Reid’s notorious Senate-seats defeat dividend.

[S]ome Democrats worry that credible reports of even slight improvements in the military situation in Iraq could hurt their party’s momentum, built largely on public disenchantment with President Bush and his handling of the war. The administration is writing the September update while consulting with Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. ambassador Ryan Crocker. Both men will testify before Congress…

Some Democratic lawmakers have drawn similar conclusions, putting new strains on party solidarity. Rep. Brian Baird, D-Wash., recently returned from Iraq and said he no longer supports a hard deadline for troop withdrawals.

Update: Such a bad idea, for all the reasons Geraghty lists plus the fact that most of the public agrees with the Democrats that Iraq isn’t part of the war on terror. Holding the hearing on that day will only play up the distinction. Just leave 9/11 alone; the facts are the facts the day before or the day after.

Slightly off topic, but I’ve heard the Hillary ad several times. And each time I hear her get to the part about the “single mom looking for affordable day care so she can get a job,” the same question comes to mind: Has a politician ever used the word affordable in a sentence when they didn’t really mean government price control? Just wonderin…

Spurlee on August 20, 2007 at 2:29 PM

affordable = socialism in her world.

Just like “Munich” (which I just saw and it was crap) and its main theme – any fighting done against terrorists only breds more terrorists so why even bother?

Word is she said that the withdrawal of troops would be in her second year of her presidency. The Shia and Sunni leaders are meeting seriously now and progress may come at any time. They are on vacation, but Malachi is still handling the negotiations. They are discussing “generations to come for their country.” Somebody has gotten somebody’s attention. September is going to be very critical.

Yeah, but didn’t she say her first act as empress, er, dictator, er, president, would be to pull out of Iraq? No doubt the MSM will give her a pass on that…

Amusing, although I’m not sure what he means by troops in Iraq being invisible to her

It’s a play on the ad where she said the troops are invisible to President Bush.

This lady speaks with forked tongue. If for some strange reason She is CIC she will not pull out. She is trying to appease both the VFW and the leftists with this line.

apostle53 on August 20, 2007 at 3:09 PM

Well its clear that the dems are all prepared to say that September’s Iraq report is

Just more Bush lies

Just got done talking to my VFW Post’s rep down there. ” To bad we’re gentlemen, we’d tell her what a moron she is!” His direct quote.
I do find her chutzpaz( forgive spelling)at being there quite humorous if the stakes weren’t so serious.

If the veterans wore these during a W speech, they HAD to have them on while she squawked:

I see no real inconsistency here…you just gotta believe that she won’t take her first act as President until her second year in office.

Or at least we can hope….

Just leave 9/11 alone; the facts are the facts the day before or the day after.

Plus it will interfere with Sean Hannity’s Freedom Concert!

New military tactics in Iraq are working but the best way to honor soldiers is “by beginning to bring them home,” Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton told a veterans group Monday.

This logic is just ridiculous to me. Compare, for example, if you heard someone say this…

“Our firefighters almost have the building contained, but the best way to honor them is to pull them out and let the city council work it out.”

“There’s a lot of crime on the streets, but we need to protect our police officers by keeping them out of harm’s way.”

It goes counter to their whole purpose for being there.

Invisible – the new bumper sticker campaign slogan and I suspect a campaign promise.

From where did the pre-emptive attack come on Patraeus’ report?

Think Progress, by a former employee of the Democrat National Committee Faiz Shakir.

These people cannot be allowed to gain the Presidency. I hope that people see that liberals are the real enemy within before it’s too late.

She exposed a huge fatal flaw right there, if she doesn’t know how or refuses to win, then America will not elect another loser.

On the other hand if she supports winning she also loses, her base.

This Presidential election will not be an unelected Ford versus an unimaginable loser named Carter run from inside a bubble.

Didn’t Congress set the date for the report?

“The best way of honoring their service is by beginning to bring them home,” Mrs. Clinton said, receiving respectful, yet tepid applause during an address to the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The best thing we can do to honor their service is not elect democrats!!!

Perhaps someone already covered this, but you know he’s parodying her ad where she says the troops are invisible to Bush, right? That’s all it’s about.

RightWinged on August 20, 2007 at 10:16 PM

I heard the funniest question on Hannity’s radio show today-someone called in and wanted Hillary to be asked:
“If you do win the Presidency, and Bill moves back into the White House with you, can you promise that the White House would be an “adultery-free zone?”

Doug on August 20, 2007 at 11:41 PM

The Left wants their retreat no matter what. If they can’t get it because of the military situation which is now improving they’ll get it because of the political situation in the Iraqi gov’t.

Shame on them… if they had any shame that is.

The liberal candidates are simply incoherent, not only on the war; the right doesn’t have anyone to crow about either.

Hillary running, and entering this early, with all the others, has had one grand effect – it has weaned me off TV almost 100%. She makes one yearn for Bill’s savvy and schliff.

Very scary indeed.

The original picture of Hitlerly Robbem Clinton looks like a pit bull ready to attack just as the photo of Vic above Hitlerly’s does.

Has anyone had a chat with a pit bull?

Remember history, friends. Even the most ineffectual, bumbling fools can get elected if they can “make” their opponent look much worse. 2006 mid term elections were won on the power of negative campaigning; 6 years of Dems calling George Bush evil and the WOT wrong had an effect.
For 2008 we’re going to see mud slinging like there’s no tomorrow and if the Dems win the White House it may SEEM like there’s no tomorrow.
But all is never lost.
We survived BClinton and JCarter-we will survive.
