Heart-ache: Illegal aliens afraid to drive in case cops decide to actually enforce the law

posted at 1:51 pm on August 19, 2007 by Allahpundit

Millions of border-jumping criminals with contempt for American immigration law are suffering from anxiety. Why?

Because of you, that’s why.

A Brazilian man who agreed to be identified by his first name initial and last name, Santos, 27, knows well the risks he takes. He can be stopped by the police and sent to court, but what he fears the most is that any encounter with the law can lead to deportation.

And yet he drives.

“I feel like a soldier who has been sent to war and is forced to kill people,” said Santos, who drives with an expired Brazilian driver’s license. “I don’t have a choice.”…

If he sees them, Santos struggles to remain calm. Often he trembles and his hands begin to sweat. His wife scolds him for being nervous, he said, but he can’t help it. Once, a police cruiser followed his car for a few blocks and he thought the moment he has long feared had arrived. He saw himself being handcuffed and sent back to Brazil. As he slowed down, the patrol car passed by him.

“They said, ‘Men don’t cry,’ but that day I cried,” he said…

“When I drive, I feel like an outlaw,” he said in his native Portuguese. “Only when I get off the car, I feel relief.”

I don’t get it. Geraldo Rivera thinks it’s important to make immigration status a factor in setting bail for Class A felonies but not for minor offenses like driving without a license, yet Santos here sure sounds like a flight risk waiting to happen. I wonder why. Meanwhile, unmentioned in the piece, naturally: the body count generated by the judicial system’s “compassionate” refusal to inquire too deeply into immigration status when punishing traffic offenses.

Here’s some video taken by the reporter; it’s completely useless except for the last 20 seconds or so, which go a long way towards illustrating what the Seattle Times’s archbishop of reportage had in mind during his sermon the other day when he called for “sound, facts-based journalism.”

Update: It took a veto from Schwarzenegger in 2004 to stop California from “solving” this problem. The Bushes have also been trying to “solve” it for years now.

Didnt Caifornia have some sort of law allowing illegals to have DLs ? Or Am I confusing Motor voter with it ?

William Amos on August 19, 2007 at 2:01 PM

No they know how I feel when a cop follows me and I have a beer between my knees.

“Millions of border-jumping criminals with contempt for American immigration law are suffering from anxiety.”

John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Ted Kennedy advocate that one “solution” is to grant these people amnesty for their crime of breaking America’s laws. After all, amnesty (”path to USA citizenship for law-breakers” has NEVER been given in America. Let’s try this “social experiment of “amnesty” JUST ONCE, first, before doing anything constitutional, like enforcing our laws.

(sarcasm off)

They keep trying to pass a law, but it keeps getting defeated. However, driving without a license only means you get a ticket and you have to appear in court and pay a fine or do community service. No one is allowed to ask your immigration status. But, if they run you for warrants and you already have an immigration hold on you (very few people do), yeah, I guess they would have to arrest you on that.

As for the story (not that I believe a word of this boo-freaking-hoo drivel), let them be afraid. Let them realize that Americans won’t put up with this crap forever.

So it is legal for Illegals to read while they drive?

400lb Gorilla on August 19, 2007 at 2:21 PM

What a total load of BS! Evey illegal Brazilian in MA knows exactly what happens. You get a summons to appear in court to pay a fine and they tow your vehicle. You don’t get arrested. You then get somebody with a legal driver’s license to get your vehicle out of impound. That’s it! This is totally contrived BS!

For those of you who don’t know, MA is a huge magnet for illegal aliens mainly from Brazil. I think that’s because MA has always had a large Portuguese population, centered mainly in New Bedford and Fall River, which lessens the language barriers.

TheBigOldDog on August 19, 2007 at 2:26 PM

Maybe he should move to New Jersey. They’ll go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Heck, you can rape a five-year-old and they’ll let you out on bail with notifying INS.

JammieWearingFool on August 19, 2007 at 2:31 PM

All undocumented workers are like this young hardworking man, desperately trying to provide for wives and small children back home, who write heart-wrenching cards to their fathers. At the same time they want to assimilate and be Americans, only WE won’t let them. Shame…shame.

RW Wacko on August 19, 2007 at 2:34 PM

Unfortunately, some illegals get over this fear via some stiff belts of booze before driving.

PatrickS on August 19, 2007 at 2:35 PM

Heh. Sad. They are making it harder on illegals.

Exit question (for any liberals among us): You all do realize that this type of reporting fans the anti-illegal alien flames right?

We are a forgiving nation, but the arrogant, unassimilated, bold fashion in which Hispanic culture has tried to force itself on America for the last 40 years culminating in 1 million illegals and their supportes to take to the streets of Los Angeles waving the flag oftheir respective home countries was the last straw. Any and all goodwill is gone.

Theworldisnotenough on August 19, 2007 at 2:37 PM

Oh, how sad. What he needs is a good stiff drink down at the local pub — maybe two or three — to take the edge off. Then he’ll feel more relaxed and much better when he hits the road.

Poor thing.

Drum on August 19, 2007 at 2:39 PM

However, driving without a license only means you get a ticket and you have to appear in court and pay a fine or do community service.

I believe that in California, if you are caught driving without a license or your license is suspended your car is supposed to be impounded and you get a ticket. The impound is a mandatory 30-day hold. The cost to retrieve you car after this period depends on the tow service and their storage fees. But it is often $700 and higher.

There was an attempt to exempt illegals from having their autos impounded. Activists suggested that somehow illegal drivers without licenses were more benevolent than citizens without licenses.

Personally, I think the 30-day impound is a racket which exists only to generate revenue. Also, the cop on the street is the one with the discretion. If you’re a jerk or loser, you can be sure to get your car towed. But I have friends on the job who have told me that they have allowed people to get picked up or have a friend come drive the car home.

I have also been told that many hit-and-runs are due to a driver who is illegal or has warrants.

The Race Card on August 19, 2007 at 2:40 PM

Nice he has a better car than I do. Also if he’s so worried about being pulled over, then why drive around with an obstruction dangling from your mirror?? I could afford a car like that, if I wasn’t paying $5,850. a year in health ins. I just paid his wife’s hospital bill’s for all them Anchor babies she had. More of them on the way I’m sure.

In Massachusetts, where this guy is living, the impound is only as long as it takes you to get a legal driver to show up and pay the fine. You can get the vehicle the same hour. Costs like $200. That’s it, and believe me, Santos knows it.

He only feels like an outlaw when he drives? He’s an outlaw 24/7, and it would be nice if he’d feel guilty and worried about it more than just when he’s in his car! Maybe guilty and worried enough to go back where he came from and apply to enter the U.S. legally this time?

One incident with a hit and run illegal alien Brazilian stands out for me. About 10 years ago this Brazilian killed an American in Waltham, Massachusetts with his automobile. He skipped. Couldn’t be found. Sure enough about 4 years later I see him again but now on the internet. He fled America but couldn’t resist returning and even had the balls to return to Massachusetts. He was picked up and I hope he still rots in prison

“When I drive, I feel like an outlaw,”

Sooo, driving without a license weighs heavily on his conscience but being here illegally and working illegally is A OK. That makes sense, right?

The only reason he feels anything is because he risks being deported. If only we could find a way to make him fear being deported when he works, then maybe he’d leave on his own.

You believe wrong. California’s mandatory impound law’s are regarding insurance and are usually only enforced if you piss the cop off, or he/she is having a bad day. Although a combination of no license and no insurance will usually get your vehicle impounded. Nor is there a mandatory 30 day impound unless alcohol is involved. It’s also not unusual for a overnight impound to cost $300.00 to $400.00, and a 30 day impound can easily run several thousand dollars here.

Yep, you usually have to be doing more than driving without a license or on a suspended license to get your vehicle impounded here. But boy are you going to pay out the ass if it does get impounded.

doriangrey on August 19, 2007 at 3:13 PM

Hey, y’know, my heart speeds up when I see a cop in my rearview mirror, too–particularly if I was speeding just before noticing him there. I shouldn’t have to be worried about being punished when I commit the crime of speeding! It’s cruel, and no-one should ever have to feel the nervousness and tension of wondering if they’re going to be punished for breaking the law. Therefore, we should eliminate speeding laws and focus more police resources on cleaning up after all the speed-related accidents that would result.

Why prevent fires when it’s so much more exciting to put them out?

aero on August 19, 2007 at 3:15 PM

Cities like Maywood, and other sanctuary cities only impound non-hispanics’ cars. The mojados are let off scott free. Illegal Aliens don’t need to drive their kids to school or drive themselves to work, they need to be deported back to their country of origin and their kids are free to go with them.

JellyToast on August 19, 2007 at 3:22 PM

I can tell you they drive in Houston, Texas and typically, in order not to get stopped by the cops they will drive a 20 – 25 miles and hour under the speed limit. That is really nice when everybody else is driving 75 mph, you’ll come over an over pass and there will be an illegal driving frickin’ 45 mph and they cause a pile up. “Serenity NOW!”

TheSitRep on August 19, 2007 at 3:28 PM

Nope, they don’t realize it. They’ve been using the “crass manipulation of emotions to achieve liberal goals” template for so long, and getting away with it, that they don’t realize the method isn’t working anymore.

jaleach on August 19, 2007 at 3:33 PM

So if this guy doesn’t have a license I assume he doesn’t have insurance or if it’s on the car anything that happens probably isn’t going to be covered because he was driving illegaly. So if he injures someone, guess who pays? You got it, people who play by the rules.

Idaho is really starting to feel more and more like Mexico. All I’ve heard for most of this weekend is Spanish and it really beginning to piss me off.

I almost got nailed by a drunk illegal driver last year, which keeps me from riding my bicycle on our county back roads. I was stupid enough to ride on a Friday afternoon (not that it is the only time they drive drunk around here) and felt the skin of the car he was driving brush against my leg while he was traveling at about 65 mph (I was very, very lucky). The driver lost control of his vehicle after driving past me almost hit an on-coming car and ended up in the desert almost rolling his car. The sad part is I saw him driving in town a week later.

I have had to alter my life style because of these invaders (really irritates me) and I am all for rounding up every last illegal in the country (no matter what their country of origin) and shipping them back home. But first I want to use them as forced labor to build a fence, wall, or other barrier on both the Canadian and Mexican border. I have already signed up for Deport Them Now and would gladly go back on active duty to round them up.

I guess I am just a wee bit emotional on this subject.

Louisiana has a “driving while illegal” law, and they sometimes enforce it. But it didn’t keep the illegal drunk driver who hit my mother and daughter last year off the street. He ended up, I believe, with paying a fine and taking a half-day class. He no-showed for his first court date when my daughter (who was driving) was supposed to testify, and the DA’s office was extremely vague when I tried to follow up with them later. So these people may feel fear, but there’s not much reason for them to.

Laura on August 19, 2007 at 5:53 PM

Well, he shouldn’t “fear” that, because it will never happen. Is this journalism? Creating a story about some illegal who is scared to be pulled over and deported? How about reporting the fact that it NEVER happens, even when the motherf**kers are repeated criminals!!! No, pull the hearstrings over some guy who is scared on his way to work, of an imaginary boogie man.

RightWinged on August 19, 2007 at 6:25 PM

David J. Stoddard, 27 year veteran of the Border Patrol said -
“Illegal aliens generally do NOT want U.S. citizenship. Americans are very vain thinking that everybody in the world wants to be a U.S. citizen. Mexicans want to remain citizens of their home country while obtaining the benefits offered by the United States such as employment, medical care, in-state tuition, government subsidized housing and free
education for their offspring. Their main attraction is employment and their loyalty usually remains at home. They want benefits earned and subsidized by middle class Americans. What illegal aliens want are benefits of American residence without paying the price.

Mexico is NOT a friend of the United States. Since 1848 Mexicans have resented the United States. During World War I, Mexico allowed German spies to operate freely in Mexico to spy on the U.S.. During World War II, Mexico allowed the Axis powers to spy on the U.S. from Mexico. During the Cold War Mexico allowed spies hostile to the U.S. to operate
freely. The attack on the Twin Towers in 2001 was cheered and applauded all across Mexico. Today, Mexican school children are taught that the U.S. stole California, Arizona, new Mexico and Texas. If you don’t believe it, check out some Mexican textbooks written for their schoolchildren.”

Thanks for the info. When I had my own garage, we would often buy cars from various impound auctions. More than once, I outbid someone who was there bidding on their own car. Usually they were driving to and from work with a suspended license. But one guy told me in tears about how he was actually driving to the DMV, with a suspended license to pay his fines. Needless to say I heard a lot of sob stories.

I agree that the cops discretion will often determine how things play out. And I also agree that some tow yards will charge a few hundred bucks for your initial fees. But outside of the cost of hooking up your car for the initial tow, and higher rates on weekends, the rates are regulated by the state. Even though $750 is not that much to retrieve a car, many people can’t come up with that let alone $1500 for the 30 day hold.

Doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong here, because this whole situation just pisses me off. Driving is a privilege that should be prosecuted criminally for those who have broken into our country.

If you caught with an unlicensed firearm or conceal a weapon illegally you are going to jail, if not prison. And that applies to citizens whom are covered by our oft-ignored second amendment.

Would any of us dare to drive illegally in some other country? HELL NO, because we know that as an American we would get reamed for doing so.

When I heard something like this years ago, I had trouble really believing it. I was new to the area, and I was very unfamiliar with this very subject.

Recently I had a Mexican friend trying very hard to convince me that USA stole lands from his country. He told me, “American Southwest is not really American, but Mexican.” He then told me, “I can show you textbooks in my country that prove this!!”

RightWinged on August 19, 2007 at 6:25 PM

I have to agree here.

This is a perfect example of media bias. I actually pitched a story that would have investigated how illegals aliens live their lives – register a car, buy a home, rent movies, pay taxes, etc. My preliminary research suggested a broad range of document fraud, but also commercial, municipal and federal complicity. The story was approved but never got out of the background reporting stage.

But if I tried to present a day in the life of a legal citizen suffering the effects of illegal immigration, I could just hear the refrain, “So what? Where’s the news?”

A simple technique used by editors and journalists alike is to ask “So what?” Hard news stories that don’t answer this question are often no more than advocacy, advirtisements or profiles…not news.

Side Rant:
Whenever an anti-illegal perspective is introduced, you can be sure that the main subjects of the article will either have teeth missing or some other tip off that we should take them less seriously. (Like the ranchers on the border who must carry firearms on their own property because of drug and human smugglers. They wear cowboy hats and carry guns, so they’re easy to marginalize.)

Why don’t we ever get the stories of gun-toting, drug-dealing, wifebeating gangbangers who make up 35-40% of LA’s county jails but don’t even belong in this country?

We are in serious trouble if a Dem gets elected in 08.

The illegals stress level is totally self induced. If his main concern was working a job and supporting his family the best way he can he would avail himself of the massive public transportation system we have in Ca. This is just another lazy illegal who doesn’t like abiding by our laws because they are not to his liking, therefore they are racist, and we should shoulder the burden of them doing whatever they want.

I would feel sorry for him if I could find my sorry.

Boo-Freakin-Hoo,

I don’t believe a word of this crap. These butt-heads know that the cops are not going to do a thing to them. Hell, the DPS here in Texas told them the other day that they will no longer be checking or asking about immigration status. And the relase went out in SPANISH no less.

Paco, knows all to well that if he gets pulled over he will get cited for no insurance and no licence and will be let go

That’s it, and of course he will not show up to court.

Oh, and the preview button is cool, thanks HA

Local governments intent on doing something about illegal immigration can do better than weightless resolutions

Collier County, Florida can’t afford illegals anymore. It costs the county taxpayers $9 million/yr just to jail them!

In Waltham, MA the judges just dismiss the crim-aliens who are brought before them for driving without a license because there are too many of them and they clog up the judicial system.

The police no longer cite or arrest them because they understand that their efforts are a waste, and it also takes 2-4 man-hours to process each one and then appear before a judge who dismisses it while glaring impatiently at the offending officer.

Pavlovian surrender.

And when this guy “accidentally” slams into the back of my car and does $5,000 worth of damage. He’s gonna take care of it? Hah.

No he’s gonna whine about the fact that he wasn’t allowed a driver’s license and it’s all kinda like….. America’s fault.

He’s going to assume his being here is somehow OK and I get to pay the damages.

AND Geraldo is going to say I’m a racist and that I’M the real problem here.

The truth is, because of the wages he’d be capable of making IF HE WAS LEGALLY HERE, he’d probably still not have insurance. AND HE’d STILL BE BLAMING THE AMERICAN SYSTEM.

(sorry about the shouting. I was rear-ended by an illegal alien driver last year.)

Illegals, of course, tend to be the worst drivers.
