and lighten up. elvis had 2 intense creative periods that are reason enough for us to honor his memory. he’s human. so he died on the crapper. william holden hit his head on teh corner of a table when he fell down drunk. so it goes.

P.S. Elvis was actually quite humble and thought that his own voice paled in comparison to another one of my favorites – Roy Orbison (ugly as sin, but man could that guy sing!)

Never saw Presley live. Saw The Beatles live. Band I was in opened for Roy Orbison once when he and The Candymen were on tour in Canada. A nice man and one of my Hall of Fame rock singers.

Say what you may about the guy, his voice was absolutely incredible. Some of the notes he sang resonated throughout the auditorium and semmed to reach down into your very soul – one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had.

After hearing him, I came to the realization that I really couldn’t sing at all.

Nah, we still would have Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and I’d be doing just fine. Most music after 1960 sucks anyway.

I don’t have the perspective to say this, but I think that’s probably true. John the Baptist was incredible, living in the desert, eating bugs and dying by beheading at a little girl’s request, but he wasn’t God incarnate.

On this though, the article admits that something was going to happen in the 1950s no matter what. Is it really impossible that someone else would have done nearly the same thing?

Was there no one else who came about around the time of Elvis with a similar theme but who was simply eclipsed by Elvis?

I mean even Shakespeare had a competitor who some argue could have been better had he lived.

Never could stand Elvis. Won’t go near Memphis in August or January. Too many idgits there trying to get a glimpse of him. Only time I went to Graceland I was forced. Had to take relatives who were down for a visit. Wasn’t impressed. The peanut butter and banana sandwiches were good though.

I couldn’t agree more. Even fat and wasted, Elvis was far more coherent and talented than any of the new crop of entertainers out there. At the risk of sounding like my dad, have you heard some of the noise that passes for singing these days?

I made similar sounds when I got sick on bad oysters once. (Eddie Vetter, I’m looking in your direction.)

While I’ve never been a big Beatles fan, I’ve always thought George Harrison was way under appreciated.

Elvis simply ruled.

Yeah, I agree. I think their producer was brilliant – what’s his name, George Martin?
Of course, Ringo is way cool.
I’m sure they were all Elvis fans.
