Video: Colbert interviews new leader of centrist Democrats

I saw it last night, meant to post this morning, then forgot until Ace reminded me. It seems flat and tedious but I dislike both of them intensely enough that I honestly can’t be fair about the humor value. Having someone obliquely wish death on your boss will do that to you.

I’ll bet Harold Ford and KP found it high-larious, though.

Ace notes that the “Screw Them” comment is long gone down the memory hole now, although in fairness to Colby it’s been gone for at least a year, purged before last year’s midterms. Howard Kurtz asked him about it last summer and the chairman spun thusly:

To me in a way it’s funny that they have not updated their talking points in two years. And so they want to keep resurrecting an old quote, there’s nothing I can do about it. What I can do is I can say the fact is the reason, the context for that quote was solidarity with my brothers and sisters in arms, Marines and soldiers. I wore combat boots. I served during the first Gulf war and people are making a choice between private armies and mercenaries. I make my choice. I stand behind our men and women in uniform and I’m not going to apologize for that. But they’re going to keep resurrecting that and that’s fine. That’s what they do. They smear, they attack, they don’t like the fact that people are getting engaged in politics, that people are getting involved. There are too many turf to protect so they’ll keep doing that and that’s fine. I can fight back.

Caveat to the chickenhawk meme: if you served, it’s okay to sneer at the death of private contractors.

Anyway, here you go. Nothing funnier than irony. Joke after joke, segment after segment, night after night.

Update: Good question. Charles sends this link, too, to the original “screw them” comment for anyone who’s never seen it.

It is this statement that makes my blood boil. He was in the Army during the time of the Gulf War but he was deployed nor did he even see the sands of Kuwait or Iraq. He was in Germany stationed with an ADA (Air Defense Artillery) unit. By phrasing it the way he does he slyly trying to give himself some sort of credibility while avoiding directly claiming to be a Gulf War vet.

LakeRuins on August 16, 2007 at 1:43 PM

but he was NOT deployed
/corrected unlike TNR

I can usually appreciate humor of people I disagree with… like Stewart. It’s dumb, cheap, and uninformed in many cases, but at least its still funny.

I thought this was painfully UN-funny.

DaveS on August 16, 2007 at 1:44 PM

he happily raised his hand to make a heil sign…

Congrats folks, the left now dominates the political wing of the internet.

Ask yourself, what is the right wing version of Kos?

Someone best get busy and soon.

swami on August 16, 2007 at 1:47 PM

It seemed scripted. Or am I the only one who thought that?

Esthier on August 16, 2007 at 1:48 PM

It’s an open forum

As long as no one disagrees with the Left-wing talking points. Actually, those who don’t even end up getting banned. Cindy Sheehan decides to run against Pelosi? Posting privileges revoked. Yeah, open forum. Sure.

KoS…an open forum? what a joke!

MarkB on August 16, 2007 at 2:00 PM

Duffuss says mercenary like it’s a bad thing.

The French Foreign Legion has seen great success, we should do the very same thing here.

Some people are born natural warriors and we should use that to our benefit instead of allowing a stigma to be attached to those brave enough to defend us with their lives.

Speakup on August 16, 2007 at 2:01 PM

Cute. Was this a commercial advertisement for KOS.
Gotta love their attempt at legitimizing a hate site.

swami on August 16, 2007 at 1:47 PM

Correction: To the electronic media only the left wing of the political spectrum exists on the internet. Do you seriously think that any conservative or right leaning blogger or web site is going to be promoted in the MSM?
That puts a smile on my face just trying to imagine the production meeting where somebody even brings up the idea.

LakeRuins on August 16, 2007 at 2:01 PM

I was once a morally corrupt member of the killitary too, so I can say whatever I want.

Only Kos has the moral authority to speak for ex-military, just as Cindy Sheehan is the only mother who’s ever lost a child.

saint kansas on August 16, 2007 at 2:04 PM

LakeRuins on August 16, 2007 at 2:01 PM

No, I meant grass roots style. MM, AP, BP could do it. HA is terrific, but it’s not like Kos. They are activists and check writers.

The right has nothing of the sort, see Ruffini’s article on Hewitt for more insight.

swami on August 16, 2007 at 2:17 PM

He is the best advertisement for resurrecting dueling. I imagine he would be at the top of many lists. He should be familiar with the aspects of dueling as he “wore boots”. He probably kept some boot lieutenant’s crotch warm avoiding being drug out behind the barracks and getting beaten.

Two questions I would like to ask him;
Did you cry every day through boot camp?
and
Does soap wrapped in a towel really hurt and when it happened did it leave any marks on you?

Given his current choice of color he gives a whole new meaning to “what can brown do for you?”

jdkchem on August 16, 2007 at 2:30 PM

Swami, Check writers? They seem to write a lot of checks they can’t cash.

jdkchem on August 16, 2007 at 2:32 PM

Nope – wouldn’t want to quote anything actually from Khaos.

T J Green on August 16, 2007 at 2:47 PM

jdkchem on August 16, 2007 at 2:32 PM

I beleive they do write cashable checks to their candidates of choice. Sure, the rhetoric is over the top, but if they weren’t “ponying up” with finances, the Dem Prez field would have blown off their convention. It infuence and finances the candidates are after.

However, my prediction. Once the candidates of the left have maxed out the base contributions, they will drop them like a hot tater and rush back to the center.

That’s the time to have the popcorn ready.

swami on August 16, 2007 at 2:48 PM

The fact that people my age would rather take their facts about the world from a couple of non-sequiter, celebrity, comedian, true partisan hacks seriously makes me wonder if this country is repairable.

As for Moulitsas, he once again represents the epitome of the snide, clever liberal seether who sugar coats their hatred with claims of uselessness as to moderating their website, conveniently leaving out their posted diatribes of bile, and explaining away any truly horrible or wrong statements as “what others don’t agree with”. These people came out of higher learning institutes funded by billions of American taxpayer dollars, and return NOTHING to the society which bore them.

I am just not in a good goddamn mood.

MadisonConservative on August 16, 2007 at 2:54 PM

The Daily Sok in opposition?

I served in the Army. And I oppose the “contractor”/ Hessian / civilian “support” idea as one that weakens the military.

But to mock the death of any America trying to serve the country in any capacity -and risking their lives doing it (and who are then massacred and mutilated and desecrated by Islamofascist savages) is nothing but vile.

Kos is as slimy as something on the end of a plumber’s snake.

King Of Slime.

profitsbeard on August 16, 2007 at 2:59 PM

Just remember, a year ago at Yearly Kos, the candidate everyone was raving about isn’t even in the race anymore, but that wasn’t until after Mark Warner had started paying MMZ and Jerome Armstrong.

I wonder which candidate brought their checkbook to Yearly Kos 2007?

In Stalin’s Democracy, he never erased anyone from history. I don’t know why the media doesn’t ask MMZ why his comment cannot be found on his website. Democracy in action, brought to you by Brillo pads and Dawn dish soap.

gabriel sutherland on August 16, 2007 at 3:14 PM

I served during the gulf war, served my wife dinner one night.

He will always get a pass, because he won’t face any real journalist.

Hey, didn’t that blogger over at TNR serve in the Gulf war? You know the one where our sodiers dug up bodies of babies, made fun of disfigured women, wore a skull for a cap…you know, the same type of war that this idiot served in. A war between reality and fantasy…fantasy is winning with these guys.

right2bright on August 16, 2007 at 3:14 PM

I’ll bet a T-shirt of that last photo shot would sell pretty good.

Speakup on August 16, 2007 at 3:29 PM

Did you notice that you can’t link directly to the “Screw them” comment to show it alone? Kos created some sort of redirect for the comment’s date/time stamp link that dumps you back at the main page. He knows how wrong his comment was and knows that he can never delete it, so he does what he can to hide it (which isn’t much).

Malpaso on August 16, 2007 at 3:49 PM

Swami, I was attempting to refer to those checks they write with their mouths that they can’t pay. I don’t find what they do as activism of any sort. I see it more as a massive pity party.

jdkchem on August 16, 2007 at 3:58 PM

Colbert should stick to what he did best – act like a closet homosexual on Strangers With Candy. He did that – quite well.

Also, isn’t it interesting that the Leftists excel at having their “funny boys” do their bidding for them? O’Donnell, Colbert, Stewart, Maher, et al., – of course, it’s all about their cartoon-watching constituents.

OhEssYouCowboys on August 16, 2007 at 4:02 PM

LakeRuins on August 16, 2007 at 1:43 PM

So, in the eyes of the Left, he is just like President Bush. He served, but was a coward, because he did not deploy to the war effort. (nevermind that their choice of deploying or not was not in their hands)

But why has no one ever brought this up? In the eyes of the Left, he is just as much a “coward” and “chickenhawk” as President Bush for not serving in the war effort that was going on when he was in the service.

Michael in MI on August 16, 2007 at 4:05 PM

For the record, here is the story and pictures regarding the contractors who were killed, mutilated and had their bodies dragged through the streets, burned and hung from bridges in Fallujah by the RoP: Two Days in Fallujah

Scroll down to see all the pictures and the happy smiling faces of the children while American contractors’ burning corpses are strung up from the bridges in the background.

This is the incident for which Markos said “screw them”.

Michael in MI on August 16, 2007 at 4:10 PM

By the way, any mass media outlet with integrity would present the pictures at that site to which I linked above and then present the comment that Markos made about them. And then tell each and every Democrat Presidential candidate that this is the kind of person with whom they are associating.

Every person in America should see those pictures and then see what Markos had to say about them and then see the pictures of the Democrats pandering to this man.

Despicable and disgusting, the whole lot of them.

Michael in MI on August 16, 2007 at 4:13 PM

One last thing… in my opinion, the Democrats pandering to the Kos Krowd is just as despicable were the Republicans to pander to the “god hates fags” Westboro Baptist Church. Kos and the WBC are of the same hateful, bigoted cloth. The only difference between the two is that Kos has all his hate swept under the rug by an ignorant and adoring mass media.

Michael in MI on August 16, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Michael in MI on August 16, 2007 at 4:13 PM

But, that’s the point – they neither care about their integrity, nor about this country. If it is does their bidding, they will act upon it.

They are the enemies of America.

OhEssYouCowboys on August 16, 2007 at 4:17 PM

Does Kos remind anyone else of a smarmy little weasel trying to get his 15 minutes of fame? He does to me, and I don’t see him as dangerous in the least, but whenever I start thinking that way, it’s a red flag to me that this guy could cause some real damage if he is taken lightly. His lunatic beliefs are clearly a part of his soul and his commitment to them is scary to watch. He needs to be given all the rope he needs to hang himself.

I’ve got one line about Markos’ military service:

“Don’t ask, don’t tell.”

Montana on August 16, 2007 at 4:39 PM

But, that’s the point – they neither care about their integrity, nor about this country. If it is does their bidding, they will act upon it.

They are the enemies of America.

OhEssYouCowboys on August 16, 2007 at 4:17 PM

Oh I know, trust me. But hopefully mass media sites such as HotAir or MM or PowerLine, etc will put my suggestions together and expose this little creep for the hateful dirtbag that he is AND expose the Democrats for their pandering to this hateful little creepy dirtbag.

In fact, how about one of those nifty online political ads or a Vent? All you have to do is take the pictures from the link I provided, then put up the quote to what Kos said about those contractors and then finish it off with showing each and every DEM Presidential candidate pandering at the YearlyKos Konvention.

And BINGO, make it go viral across the blogosphere and the little sh*t and his DEM puppets are exposed.

DaveS on August 16, 2007 at 1:44 PM

Seriously? To me it seems the Daily Show has had the same script for the last 3 or 4 years.

*play clip of Bush/Bush administration official/Republican politician doing, or saying, something stupid (or at least that the liberals find stupid*

*queue to Stewart on the set doing his already patented “what the hell did he just say” face (now with improved head tilt!)*

*audience whoops it up for thirteen and a half hours*

hilarious indeed.

Uh, oh. Gotta go. I’m scheduled for re-education.

I didn’t see it, but if, as mentioned, it’s basically a commercial for the site, then won’t more people go there and figure out how reprehensible they are?

urbancenturion on August 16, 2007 at 9:04 PM

Now that the dailykos and Colbert, and by extension, the leftistphere, take the position that the content on open forums is not the responsibility, moral or otherwise, of the blog owners, perhaps the administration should allow us more leverage to bash and hate the lefties a bit more without worrying about any image blowback on MM. This video clip is carte blanche to join the fray.

The way I see it, this is a war of annihiliation, and playing with respect is not the way to go when the enemy is comprised of legions of malcontents. I say, let the foot soldiers get down in the gutters and trade blows.

jihadwatcher on August 16, 2007 at 9:06 PM

When he sashays out to the desk, he looks SOOO gay! And I don’t mean Colbert.

MsUnderestimated on August 16, 2007 at 10:27 PM

One thing that disturbs me about people that watch Colbert/Stewart? The fact that some of them actually then think they’ve watched the news. Now I’ve got no problem laughing at something if it’s done well. This wasn’t. I don’t find Stewart funny anymore, or Colbert. Because it’s just same old, same old as you said AP. But that’s passing as the news for some. That’s pretty sad.

PowWow on August 16, 2007 at 11:37 PM

Well in reality the beauty of what we’re doing at Daily Kos and other blogs like it is we’re getting regular Americans a voice in their politics to go on and talk about the things that they’re passionate about. Now at Daily Kos we don’t allow truly hateful speech…

Nor do they allow facts. Nor do they allow dissent to their pre-programmed talking points. Nor do they allow any post that isn’t filled with BDS.

Of course the entire segment was scripted. It wasn’t an interview, it was a Kos Kommercial.

Nonfactor on August 16, 2007 at 5:52 PM

As long as Kos claims that his site is “an open forum”, yet edits or deletes any comments with which he disagrees, then he is behaving as a Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Mao, or Pol Pot of his medium, attempting to force others to accept only those thoughts he approves, or making them disappear. Of course it is only in a virtual sense, and no violence is done, but the attempt to control the thoughts of others is not a powerless event, nor should it come without consequences.

RightWinged on August 17, 2007 at 4:28 AM

So eh… What’s up with the whole Kos media blitz of late? Apparently the Powers That Be have decided he’s ready for primetime, even though anyone with a brain can see he’s not. Hate speech? What hate speech??

DailyKos is an open forum to hate domestic political opponents (aka Republicans and all Democrats who wander off the plantation) while ignoring and minimizing foreign threats.

We should all just be glad that these people are too wussy to start their “enemies” like Hitler did, because these people really do hate their political enemies.

Seixon on August 17, 2007 at 5:01 AM

Someone named Colbert doth protesteth too much.

The Left’s creeping sympathy for fascists (Islamo brand), which dovetails with the growing – if yet laregely unspoken – awareness that they in fact have quite a lot in common with some of the goals and tactics of national socialism, is something I’ve been keeping an eye on for years. Nice to see it hitting the surface. There’s a lot more about this that can bubble up.

Stewart and Colbert provide both sides of an issue in a manner that allows supporters and opponents to laugh at themselves, and see others and themselves as others do.

I do not worry much about those on the left because they are self imploding. They abort themselves in record numbers, support a gay agenda that does not involve procreation, their disdain for Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) ironically violates one of their idols ‘Hitler’ goals.

Their goal is to convince those who are on the fence that they are entitled to a piece of the pie. To get their piece pie without any expenditure of effort on their part is to simply go to ‘My Favorite Black Muslim Bakery” and get their piece of the pie.

1) Michael in MI:

You’ve made an error, or bought into NPR propaganda:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Phelps#Democratic_Party

Despite both supporting and opposing Democratic candidates, Fred Phelps is a Democrat, not a Republican.

Lefties like to throw that one onto Republicans because, well, leftists are kind of prejudiced that way.

2) Ah, the sweet, sweet irony of Nonfactor declaring someone else irrelevant. Especially when it comes to a discussion about banning blog commenters and deleting comments!

I mean, how distilled can projection get, anyway?
