The Shi’ites believe in this specific “12th imam, the Mahdi”, based on a kid who “disappeared” a millennia or so ago.

Supposedly he’s been in hiding all this time, so he’ll a little long in the tooth.

It sounds crazy, but the Shi'ites (or is it the Sunni's?) are anxiously waiting for the Mahdi, much like Christians are waiting for Christ to return. I have a theory that the Mahdi is actually the anti-christ of the Bible. Some of their prophesies, as I understand them, would supposrt that view. For example, the Mahdi is supposed to bring world peace for seven years. The Bible talks about the anti-christ who will make a seven year peace deal with Israel, but will break it half way through. I heard an interview with Walid Shoebat and he was talking about some of the prophesies that some Muslims believe. Apparently, Ahmedinejhad believes that the 12th Imam will return when there is sufficient caos in the world. Their prophesies speak of "Troubles in the Skies," one reason why they are obsessed with blowing up airliners, etc. Interesting, if they weren't so deadly serious about it. I have no doubt that Iran will use the nukes they make to help usher in their Mahdi. Crazy stuff... If this is truely what is motivating them, all hope of reasoning and diplomacy is out the window. I know that is not a news flash.
