Petraeus said when talking about a retreat in Iraq, to which Democrats replied in unison, “Do you think we give a sh**? It’s election season baby!”
RightWinged on August 14, 2007 at 10:33 PM
um, he was struck and almost killed by live ammunition in a training exercise in Kentucky? Am I missing something here? WTF?
AdrianG on August 14, 2007 at 10:36 PM
Adrian,
Yes that is correct. Upon promotion to lieutenant colonel, Petraeus moved from the office of the Chief of Staff to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he commanded the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)’s 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment from 1991-93. As battalion commander of the Iron Rakkasans, he suffered one of the more dramatic incidents in his career when, in 1991, he was accidentally shot in the chest during a live-fire exercise when a soldier tripped and his rifle discharged. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, where he was operated on by future Senator Bill Frist.

Great info!
I live in Nashville and my better half is a Vandy grad … but I’d never heard this. Figure the odds of Frist being the surgeon.
Hey, whatever happened to Frist running for the White House anyway?
Professor Blather on August 14, 2007 at 11:04 PM
Frist is backing fred I think
William Amos on August 14, 2007 at 11:08 PM
There was an excellent mini-bio on him in the NYT or WSJ a few months ago. He actually promoted the young soldier who shot him – the whole idea was he’s a man all about second chances, etc. I don’t have an account but I think this is the story:
THE REACH OF WAR: THE MILITARY; Biggest Task for U.S. General Is Training Iraqis to Fight Iraqis
TheBigOldDog on August 14, 2007 at 11:12 PM
Ya, that’s right, Frist was the surgeon. I forgot about that…
TheBigOldDog on August 14, 2007 at 11:14 PM
Okay, totally off-topic (well, it pertains to a real military hero at least), but you guys might dig this.
Ace has a story up that French git planning to break the free fall record and bust the sound barrier with nothing but a parachute … so I did a little checking into who set that record back in 1960.
And this dude has an amazing story. His life is a freaking Jerry Bruckheimer movie. He’d be played by Bruce Willis.
Seriously. It’s that cool. Check it out, Make sure you read the part AFTER the parachute jump, as in Vietnam:

I didn’t know guys like that even existed outside of Hollywood.
Professor Blather on August 14, 2007 at 11:28 PM
Okay still off topic and still on the same off-topic topic, this is from an interview with Joe Kittinger. This man had Malkins the size of watermelon:

Sorry. I’m done now. I just thought this was the coolest story I’d never heard. What a man of steel this guy was (still is).

Thanks for sharing

Just a test to see if my comments are posting.
Michael in MI on August 15, 2007 at 12:29 AM
Okay, I guess the hangup is the link I provided.
Michael in MI on August 15, 2007 at 12:29 AM
In case my comment got lost somehow, what I was trying to post was a link to Michael Yon’s account of the David Petraeus story. Just Google “Michael Yon Second Chances” and you will find it.

What if I don’t give a shit about Darfur? Let them slaughter each other, that’s not America’s business.
Lehuster on August 15, 2007 at 7:55 AM
Darfur does not bother me.
Unless they are physically invading our shores, none of them are worth the cost of a US Marine hang nail. These instances should be handled with MOABS, I’ve been paying almost 1/3 of my salary in taxes to build this crap that in theory was supposed to save our troops, only to find we don’t have the Malkins to use them.
Further, the biggest problem the 3rd world faces in trying to advance from 7th century savages to pre-industrial revolutionary times is…ITSELF.
Corruption, graft, century long tribal hatred, cultish religious fanaticism.
The miracle of the US constitutional republic cannot be duplicated carte-blanc accross every nation. A particular mindset must be first prevelant. The sad truth is that even though they desire the same material goods, rights, and privleges that we enjoy, most of the world is not capable of accepting this gift because they are not ready to give up their familiar uncivilized tribal ways.
