Illegal alien hit-and-run kills 2 Maryland men Updated

He hit five construction workers along Rt 29 in Burtonsville, MD and then fled the scene. Two of the five have now died.

A second construction worker has died from his injuries after a van slammed into five construction workers on Route 29.

Montgomery County Police say 37-year-old James Cronin of Glen Burnie died Tuesday. On Monday, Cronin was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Police say the driver of the van, 31-year-old Manuel De Jesus Gonzalez-Geronimo, turned himself in at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Gonzalez-Geronimo, of Hyattsville, was charged with failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of a collision involving death, failure to immediately stop a vehicle at the scene of a collision involving bodily injury, and driving without a license.

He is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center. Police say Gonzalez-Geronimo could face additional charges.

Prosecutors say Gonzalez-Geronimo has also admitted to being in the country illegally for seven years. He is originally from Guatemala.

Another construction worker, 30-year-old Martin Ruffin of Baltimore, was killed and three other men injured when the van plowed through a construction site.

There may be more people involved in the crash who haven’t come forward yet.

After the crash, police say Gonzalez-Geronimo jumped out of the van and ran into a wooded area off of Route 29. Police believe there may have been other people in the van who also fled.

Video report on the incident here, and additional coverage here and here.

Update: Here’s a story with a familiar ending from Houston. This one ends with a family of three, wiped out. The youngest was a 2-year-old boy.

Down in comments, mjgreco wishes someone would track crimes committed in the US by illegal aliens. Well, they tried that in Texas until the press got wind of it, and spineless officials ran for cover.

The Texas Department of Public Safety tracked state troopers’ encounters with illegal immigrants for two years as part of a program to gauge the state’s immigration situation, a spokesman said.

Critics of the program said the agency may have gathered the information illegally by asking people about their immigration status. They also questioned whether the data was built on racial profiling.

After receiving questions about it from The Dallas Morning News, the agency said last week that the program was being stopped. The newspaper learned about the program through an open records request.

The “gathering of this data was designed to be a temporary snapshot of the situation. This has been accomplished and the numbers are inconclusive,” DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said in a written statement.

The study, which began in June 2005, had troopers document the number of stops that involved illegal immigrants; the number of them released with no action; the number of them released to immigration authorities; and the number jailed. Regional reports were submitted monthly to the Highway Patrol chief.

The usual race grievance mongers got in the game, which sealed the program’s fate.

How big would the uproar be if illegal aliens were routinely victimized by cops or border agents?

There would congressional hearings and boycotts put in place by Amnesty International.

Ignoring a threat is as bad as creating one. At some point, we are going to start using stronger words with regards to the apologists: sedition, treason, unamerican, traitor, etc.

I wish the FBI, DHS, or……SOMEONE would track the number of crimes commited by illegal immigrants in this country. I think everyone would be absolutely shocked at how high the number is is.

I, of course, believe that the majority of illegals want to be otherwise law abiding, but the simple fact is that the ability to easily enter and exit the US from Mexico makes the US an attractive target for people who WANT to live in the shadows. Another word for those people is “criminals”.

Also, keep in mind that Mexico is loathe to extradite Mexicans who have committed crimes in the US making criminal activity in the US by a Mexican national a high reward, low risk proposition if he uses Mexico as a sanctuary.

What is the MOST frustrating is that, to my knowledge, no one has directly asked the Dem or Republican presidential candidates what their plan is for criminal aliens. I’d expect a poll of the American public would be 90-10 in favor of checking the status of all arrestees and deporting anyone convicted of crimes.

So why aren’t these candidates pushing this issue?

You can’t track the number of crimes committed by illegals in this country – because too many jurisdictions won’t even let their officers ask.

What is the MOST frustrating is that, to my knowledge, no one has directly asked the Dem or Republican presidential candidates what their plan is for criminal aliens.

All the top-tier Dem and Republican candidates have shameful records on immigration.

Michelle was right on the Factor last night. Let’s have single-issue debates. Liberals can have their “ghey” debate. Grassroots conservatives should have an “immigration” debate.

And we can pick our own people (Michelle) to ask the questions.

Zach on August 14, 2007 at 8:01 PM

Geraldo just called to let me know “this isn’t an immigration issue”… He added that he is too stupid to recognize that the point is, if immigration laws were being enforced, there are countless innocent people who’d be alive today, and that while he can complain that the issues are “drunk driving” issues, etc., the FACT is that if these illegals weren’t here, these deaths wouldn’t have taken place.

Okay, he didn’t really call… but that’s essentially what he says whenever pulling that “it’s not an immigration issue” crap. He is essentially asserting that if it hadn’t been an illegal who killed someone at that very moment, then it would have been an American citizen doing it.

RightWinged on August 14, 2007 at 8:06 PM

The Maryland legislature passed a resolution proclaiming Maryland “The most immigrant friendly state of the union” some years back. Montgomery County uses taxpayer money for day laborer sites. If you hate this story vote all the liberals in Maryland out of office.

ps. How on earth did two non-Hispanic-sounding-named people get construction jobs anyway? Someone obviously didn’t tell these American workers that they were doing jobs that they wouldn’t do.

The situation in the Houston area is beyond ridiculous. The Chronicle (NYT-Lite) did its best to avoid addressing the suspect’s immigration status as long as possible.

By the time they let that little factoid slip, the story had drifted silently from the front page. Same thing with the murders in Newark.

I guess our lazy US citizen/legal immigrant drunk drivers and murderers aren’t willing to work such long hours in this heat.

9,000 Americans killed anually by illegals. Open border congress should be sued for this, or at least fried in public like they do to Bush.
We lose 3 times more Americans in one year to illegals ON OUR SOIL, than we have in total from the war in Iraq.

From a Newt Gingrich newsletter:

At the funeral of one of the young victims, Newark Mayor Cory Booker pounded the coffin and shouted, “Enough is enough!”

The Aeriel-Harvey-Hightower Act to Protect Americans

The Aeriel-Harvey-Hightower Act should be very simple and straightforward:

1 The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security will jointly outsource the development of a virtually real-time identification system to check legal status of felons and have it up and running by Jan. 1, 2008. The system should be measured against the speed of automatic teller machines and should be run by private-sector companies who know how to build and maintain real-time identification systems and how to combat fraud.

2 Every person arrested for a felony will be checked against the federal data base, and unless there is positive proof they are American citizens or legal residents in America, they will be presumed to be here illegally and will be detained.

3 Any city, county or state that refuses to participate in checking every felony arrest will immediately lose all their federal aid.

4 No illegal alien criminal will be released back into the American population to prey upon Americans. After they finish time for their crime, they will be retained until deported. Retention and deportation will be the responsibility of the federal government, and every state and local authority that has criminals serving time who prove to be illegal aliens will turn them over to federal authorities when their local or state conviction is completed.

5 All current prisoners will be screened to identify who is in the United States illegally, and the illegal alien prisoners will be turned over to the federal government for deportation.

But honestly things are getting better. ICE has recently put teams in a lot of metro areas serving deportation warrants on criminal aliens and are actually putting detainers on illegals arrested by local police if and when the cops notify them of the arrest.

What needs to happen is your local councilman, mayor, and police chief needs to hear your opinions and the local cops need to be calling their local ICE office every time an illegal is put behind bars on any charge. These local politicians need to know that their political careers depend on their strong support for deporting criminal illegal aliens. From there we go to the State with the same message and then to the Federal level.

csdeven on August 14, 2007 at 7:43 PM

The MD “hit and run” accident resulting in 2 deaths is a very sad tragedy.

We weep with the families of those victims who have died.

Compounding the sadness of this tragedy is the fact that, quoting Michelle Malkin, “this could have been 100% preventable” if border security (and interior border enforcement) had been an Administration priority years ago. Interior border security (elimination of “sanctuary cities”, elimination of “anchor-baby citizenship”, and fining and jailing US employers who hire illegal aliens) would have prevented this tragedy as well.

This tragedy also illustrates the “Grand Canyon-size” Divide that exists between the non-reality called Washington D.C. power corridors and the reality of everyday Americans.

The fact of the matter is, it is everyday Americans, not Lindsey Graham, not Ted Kennedy, not Trent Lott, not John McCain, who see and experience the negative consequences of an entrenched corrupt, immoral, unconstitutional system that encourages the steady flow of illegal aliens across our open and porous borders.

It is everyday Americans who send their kids to over-crowded schools, while US Senators take their kids to private schools which they can afford. It is everyday Americans who see home values decline because non English-speaking neighbors are living with 2 or 3 families in over-crowded single family homes. Ted Kennedy and John McCain do not see this. Trent Lott, Graham-amnesty, Chuck Hagel of NE, see no problem with “comprehensive immigration reform” (translation: “amnesty”) even though everyone knows that there have been 7 amnesties passed since 1986. Which means: those who vote in favor of amnesty already know that past historical precedent almost guarantees that there will be another amnesty in 10 years. And another one in 15 years. They are voting for amnesty because everyone knows they are not identifying the root problem.

It is everyday Americans who witness the tragedies of illegal immigration, not the average US Senator.

I have no desire to make broad, sweeping, unfair, or hurt-ful generalizations against all illegal aliens of whatever age or whatever background.

But the fact is, they broke the law by coming here illegally. And then many (not all-but many) show further disrespect by violating more laws.

And to think that the majority of the Democrat Party, along with Chuck Hagel (NE), Graham-Amnesty, John Kyl of AZ, John McCain, Trent Lott (MS), Richard Lugar (IN), and others wanted these people to receive the gift of US citizenship as a reward for breaking our laws really bothers me.

Some may say, “but violent deaths caused by illegal aliens are a small number overall.” My response is:

what about the financial devastation caused by victims (READ: US Citizens) of document theft, Social Security number theft, identity theft, or credit card theft. The majority of illegal aliens commit some form of identity theft or document fraud. What about millions of US citizens who spend years and years trying to repair their bad credit just because an illegal alien decided to steal their identity? Granted, no one dies by these examples of document theft. But I am arguing that there still are painful, negative consequences that flow out of illegal immigration affecting everyday Americans. And yet US Senators do not see this. US Senators are not negatively affected or seem even remotely concerned about document theft.

This MD tragedy only painfully illustrates the Grand Canyon Divide that separates the un-reality of Washington DC from the reality of everyday Americans.

And we need to be very quick to remind US Senators that we have not forgotten their unconstitutional actions of rewarding those who flagrantly disregard the “rule of law”.

I recently read a book by the British historian Andrew Roberts called “A History Of The English-Speaking Peoples Since 1900″. In it he pointed out that the phrase “Second World War” was coined by a writer in the mid-thirties, and the intellectuals of the day scolded him for it. Might I suggest the title “Second Mexican-American War” for what will happen in the near future?

There are two notable exceptions, as you will notice if you have at least one working eye. One is Vanessa Lanza Etourneau, the lovely French femme fatale who has been on my personal Most Wanted list for quite some time now, and secondly, a German newcomer who, at 5′9″ and 120 lbs, MIGHT, just might — with better lighting — might even rival Ma Belle Fille, La Criminelle, Mmme. My mother and daughter were hit by an illegal alien drunk driver last August. He never made it to court in January. Quelle suprise! I was furious, but this perked me up a great deal:

It was Monday morning, and Juan Herrera was doing what he always did on Monday mornings: driving to work. But on Oct. 2, at 8:25 a.m., New Orleans police officer David Finneman spied what he believed to be an expired license tag on Herrera’s 1990 Buick Century. He put on his cruiser’s blue lights and pulled Herrera over near the corner of Palmyra Street and North Carrollton Avenue. In the end, Finneman arrested Herrera not just for an expired license tag but also for driving a motor vehicle without valid immigration documents, a violation of state law.

They ought to be doing this everywhere. Lawyers are screaming about “Driving While Latino” but I’d rather see a DWL than another DWI – we still haven’t finished paying for my daughter’s surgery, and my mother’s car hasn’t run right since the accident.

Finally, someone who has seen the light!!!

George Bush is a visionary man who is looking out for us all.

He knows that our economy would fall apart if we did not have hard working Amigos from the south to pick our sacred lettuce, doing the job that lazy Americans would not even do for $50 an hour.

He also knows, what apparently few do, that lettuce is a wonder plant.

Someday soon a cure for cancer will be found from an extract from lettuce.

Someday soon highly fermented lettuce will power all our cars.

Someday soon lettuce reactor plants will provide all of our
electricity.

A derivative from lettuce may even hold the cure for old age!!!

And the thing is folks that only hard working Amigos from the south know how to pick lettuce in just the right and loving way to keep it from losing all of these magical properties.

Have you hugged a head of lettuce today?

Have you sent President Bush a nice card letting him know just how much you appreciate him?

Think about it.

Seems like Americans are surprised this is going on so frequently.

There are several websites out there documenting the deaths and injuries incurred by Americans from illegals on a daily basis. All you have to do is google / yahoo it.

But don’t worry. There’s always a reality show of some sort to watch on tv.
