Video: Newt calls for special session of Congress to address criminal illegal aliens

Not a hope in hell, but that’s not the point. The point, obviously, is to force the issue of criminal illegal aliens onto the table and make the GOP field commit themselves to doing something about it. Don’t expect the media to help in any way; if pressure’s to be applied here, it’ll have to come from the blogs and talk radio. From our lips to Rush’s, Hannity’s, and Ingraham’s ears.
Update: A good question from See-Dub: “Why didn’t Fred do this?”

Oh yeah, announced candidates have to follow different rules.

Umm maybe an answer here
Could Newt join Fred Thompson?
By Jonathan Martin, The Politico
Newt Gingrich’s long, slow striptease over whether he will seek the presidency in 2008 looks like it might come to an unexpected conclusion: a date with Fred Thompson.
Publicly, Gingrich has been sending signals making clear that a presidential candidacy for him is becoming less likely. Privately, he and some of his closest advisers have been meeting with — and, in at least one prominent case, going to work for — the lobbyist-actor and former Tennessee senator.
“I’ve always said it was unlikely I would run,” Gingrich said in an interview last Friday with the Associated Press. And, he added, if Thompson “runs and does well, then I think that makes it easier for me not to run.”
The same day that Gingrich made his comments, his former communications director, Rich Galen, disclosed that he had signed on as an adviser to Thompson’s campaign in waiting. In an interview, Galen termed the coincidence “an unfortunate confluence of events,” denying that there was any link.
But that was not the only evidence of a possible Thompson-Gingrich alliance in 2008. Gingrich and his wife, Calista, had dinner with Thompson and his wife, Jeri, at the former senator’s home in McLean, Va., on July 16, according to two Republican sources close to both men.

Even if so, Bill, why would Fred farm out an idea this good to someone on his team? He should be out in front on this, not Newt.
Allahpundit on August 11, 2007 at 1:40 PM
Think of the role Cheney plays for Bush on issues and maybe again you have an answer
William Amos on August 11, 2007 at 1:42 PM
Newt should be, Sec of State, Defense, and Homeland Security.
Is he the only one that can think?
Dersu on August 11, 2007 at 1:43 PM
Geraldo will demand a apology from Newt.
calgrammy on August 11, 2007 at 1:44 PM
Bush is already elected, and the reason Cheney plays that role for him is because he’s far more articulate than Bush is. Fred needs exposure and his communication skills are, allegedly, one of his stronger points. He’s a moron if he’s farming this out to Newt.
Plus, the Politico piece hardly proves they’re working together. Newt’s still potentially a candidate himself. How does him floating this now benefit Fred?
Allahpundit on August 11, 2007 at 1:45 PM
Aren’t all illegal aliens criminal illegal aliens? I mean after all, they broke the law when they jumped the border.
This “NEW PUSH” on illegal aliens doesn’t go far enough.
What about the day labor guys who get paid cash and don’t steal a SSN? They are putting nothing into the system. How about them. Shouldn’t we be rounding them up?
How about the sanctuary cities? Aren’t they breaking the law by not working with the federal government? Cut off federal funds to these cities until they fall in line.
This is nothing but a half arsed effort by a bunch of half arsed politicians.
BobK on August 11, 2007 at 1:46 PM
LOl Allah Im not disagreeing with you that Fred doesnt need to take a stand he does.
Im saying that on a contenious issue you flot ideas through other people. Fred lets Newt take the heat for a question without blowback on himself.
Newt is and always will be great at throwing flames. Hes the perfect pointman. The fact that Fred is associated with him will have an effect.
Fred will let Newt take the lead but then see where it goes. I think its a smart way to do things rather than getting yourself pigeon holed into a position that you cant change later
William Amos on August 11, 2007 at 1:49 PM
Why didn’t Fred! think of this?
Maybe because Fred! can’t think his way out of a wet paper sack?
Labamigo on August 11, 2007 at 1:49 PM
If this were a presidential debate how would Hilary respong without looking like the severely limited leftist dolt that she is?
peacenprosperity on August 11, 2007 at 1:50 PM
Whether or not Fred even thought of this, who knows, but if he had, Spencer Abraham may have talked him out of it. It’s probably easier to raise campaign money when riding on the open-borders bandwagon.
FloatingRock on August 11, 2007 at 1:51 PM
Thompson has lost his momentum and unless he is mindboggling effective once he declares he will fade into the pack. He ahs picked and chosen his spots up till now and his advantage is that he hasn’t been in the same game as the rest of the candidates. That will also be a disadvantage for him at the same time.
peacenprosperity on August 11, 2007 at 1:53 PM
Newt has the capability to destroy the wicked witch of the west (a.k.a.) Hillary and I hope he is inclined to do so.
rplat on August 11, 2007 at 1:54 PM
Look the reason Newt is unelectible is because he takes hard passionate stances on issues. That irks many and makes him seem like an ideologue.
Politics is about walking a fine line. You have to have stances on issues but not to a point where you make youself unelectible.
Paint yorself into a corner and its much harder to get out. Clinton for all his faults was a master at not allowing himself to get painted into a left corner (even if he took root there)
You have to fight perceptions as much as opponents in politics
William Amos on August 11, 2007 at 1:56 PM
A mandate to check databases for alien congruent offenses would be a popular no brainer.
If Congress would just connect the dots and also mandate expulsion rather than waste time giving every criminal alien the opportunity to file enough times that they get to stay and be a criminal anyway.
I think Fred! stepped in it when he hired Spencer Abraham.
Speakup on August 11, 2007 at 1:57 PM
People who think Fred is some kind of great GOP hope are going to end up disappointed, I think.
Purple Fury on August 11, 2007 at 1:57 PM
If they are here illegally, aren’t ALL of them criminals? I heard Ellis Hennican and somebody else on FOXNews discussing whether or not illegal aliens commit a larger or smaller percentage of crime than the citizenry – I had to laugh, because 100% of those who are here illegally have violated a law, therefore, 100% of illegal aliens are criminals.
reine.de.tout on August 11, 2007 at 2:00 PM
Yes, but the point is if you don’t have the manpower to deport everyone, at least focus first on the violent criminals among them.
Allahpundit on August 11, 2007 at 2:02 PM
I think you are right. Once he is on stage with the rest of them is averageness will show.
peacenprosperity on August 11, 2007 at 2:12 PM
We need to put troops along US/Mex border TODAY
Start building the wall in 100 places using the same slip form paving technology as road building then tilt them up. The fence could be completed in months.
This will immediately stop terrorists, illegal people and drugs from entry.
The federal government needs to provide employers with an online database to check out SSN#s.
Then hold employers liable for illegally hiring illegals.
Then all he government would have to do is one random raid per week.
Deny all education benefits to illegals.
Stop the anchor baby deal.
After it looks like we are getting this disaster under control, we can start a guest worker program.
Once you apply for guest worker status you would be forever ineligible for US citizenship.
TheSitRep on August 11, 2007 at 2:20 PM
*That is the key.
If only.
If only these three (3) would do a concerted, unrelenting focus along with the “loud folks” campaign of calling, faxing, and writing, then it would get done.
The irony here is if any one of the elected officials would experience such an “incident” closer to home from a criminal illegal, it would get done ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot think of any one single issue that is more urgent at this moment.
If I could scream loud enough in order to make something happen I would.
This effort has to be concerted.
After waking up from a dream in the middle of the night “beating the living crap out of the offenders” it’s damn serious.
I got emotionally sick yesterday and I’m still in a physical slumber from it all.
The biggest overriding “sin” of politicians in general is still “aristocratic” in nature.
They cannot related to us “common folk”.
That is WHY WE MUST KEEP THEM HONEST LIKE RUSH LIMBAUGH SAID YESTERDAY.
Well Rush, I have four (4) words for you:
GET IT DONE, DAMMIT!!!
Rush, you are pissing me off talking about!!!

I’ve mentioned this before: My understanding is that it is a civil, rather than criminal offense to reside in the US illegally.
mikeyboss on August 11, 2007 at 2:35 PM
Hear ! Hear ! Newt ! Enforce the laws on or in the books !
oldelpasoan on August 11, 2007 at 2:44 PM
Mikeyboss,
I do not have an answer as to whether it is a “civil” or “criminal” offense to reside in the USA illegally. I really do not know.
But I do have one issue I would like to respectfully bring up now.
If an illegal alien commits document theft, identity theft, Social Security Number theft, credit card theft, …
should that crime be ….
a.) forgiven, without any punishment to the perpetuator of the crime and …
b.) should the perpetuator of above crime be rewarded with the gift of USA citizenship?
Most illegal aliens, in order to make purchases, commit document fraud, identity theft, etc.
I personally think that it is wrong, if we are to be a nation founded on the rule of law, to reward law-breakers with the gift of US citizenship.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve seen a few posts on DU mentioning that Reid will be calling the Senate into session in August once or twice so that the President will be unable to make any recess appointments. If Reid does do so, then the President should give him a task to complete while he’s in town.

Dersu on August 11, 2007 at 3:12 PM
Illegal entry/residence may be under the civil codes but the assessed punishment is Federal jail time (the amount depending on the offense(s), deportation and the inability to apply for legal residence.
A civil offense is still a crime, with real punishment.

Maybe ANOTHER illegal alien murderer in Newark?? Hard to believe. After all, Newark is a sanctuary city for innocent immigrant workers only. Right??
“An arrest warrant has been issued for a fourth suspect wanted in connection with last weekend’s execution-style killings that left three Newark college students dead and a fourth seriously injured, authorities said this morning.
Rodolfo Godinez, 24, also known as Rodolfo Gomez, a Nicaraguan (illegal??) national whose last known addresses were in the Ivy Hill section of Newark is being sought by authorities. Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy called Godinez “a principal player” and said he would be charged with three counts of murder, felony murder and weapons charges.”

So, what’s the deal with DeportThemNow.com?
Tru2my2 on August 11, 2007 at 4:12 PM
Acknowledging first the caveat that immigration is pretty strictly a federal function, I’m still not happy about this move of Newt’s, if only because of the tendency of the central government to overreach into state functions.
As such, I would prefer to see us haranguing our state representatives on subjects such as involvement of police in vetting the citizenship status of those arrested and convicted; notifying the feds of those here illegally to be picked up for status violations; and cracking down on municipalities playing the sanctuary city routine.
I don’t mind targeting one’s Federal Reps on this, but we shouldn’t let our State (and local) reps duck the fire, either. They have more a direct responsibility for police protection than the Federal government and that is what is failing here wrt illegal aliens committing crimes while living among us.
One of the nice things about taking the local and state, or the bottom up, approach is that those reps are better held to account and their activities are a little more transparent. Another nice thing about it is that it would dilute and weaken the powers that pushed the shamnesty.
Bottom line is that each state shouldn’t be able say “this is a federal responsibility” and slough off protecting their residents because Congress can’t create a majority to take any specific action.
Dusty on August 11, 2007 at 4:33 PM
The amnesty shills haven’t given up on open borders but they have acknowledged that illegal alien murderers, rapists, pedophiles etc. are a major embarrassment to their cause.
They’re banking that this will give them enough support to push through amnesty for those whose only crime is to enter the country legally.
Buzzy on August 11, 2007 at 4:36 PM
That move certainly doesn’t line up with the theory of using Newt as an attack dog. Politico may be displaying some juicy insider “savvy” in asserting there’s some kind of convergence between Newt and Fred, but does the general public think Fred when they hear Newt speak?
It looks more to me that Newt is goosing the GOP — including Fred — to step up to the plate on at least the criminal illegal issue, and not operating as some kind of clandestine mouthpiece for Fred.

DITTO!! When and where can we sign up???
More mushy talk from Newark’s prosecutor in the recent
killingsgang executions:Prosecutor Dow downplayed any racial motive.
“We are pursuing this as a horrendous robbery that went terribly wrong,” she said. “The mayor has made clear that given the great diversity of this city and the large influx of all nationalities, we, as a people, need to come together and not make race an issue. Here, it certainly is not.”
No mention of ILLEGAL ALIEN GANGBANGERS, though.
Nothing to see here. Move on. Don’t rock our city’s sanctuary policy boat.
DEPORT THEM NOW!!! Please.
fred5678 on August 11, 2007 at 5:17 PM
You make the exact point that many of us point to as why fred? is the most unqualified candidate or non-candidate on either side. fred? isn’t interested in leading. He wants to poll his way to the nomination`by floating ideas. He has no specific ideas that haven’t already been voiced by other conservatives.
He has sat out this long because he is waiting to see what voters are looking for and then he will adopt those ideas.
He is trying to fake his way to a base of support just like he did in Tennessee. We need a leader. Someone who is willing to get out on a limb with his vision for America and then let us decide if we want to follow him. Both Rudy and Mitt! are explaining what they want to do and leaving it up to us to follow their lead.
What fred? is doing and robot could do. We just imput the polling data and fred? will do what the majority wants.

Here in Nashville TN the Davidson County Sheriff Office runs a program called 287g. Under this program each person booked into the Davidson County jail is screened using federal data bases to verify the arrestee’s residency status. The program went into effect April 16th 2007 with the following results:
Program statistics from April 16 to July 31, 2007 (provided by Davidson County Sheriff’s Office):
Total arrestees received in Davidson County jail: 13,331
Arrestees who are foreign-born: 1316 (9.9%)*
Arrestees processed for removal: 994
*Total foreign-born population in Davidson County is 10.1%
Out of the 1316 arrested during this period 994 were processed for removal, i.e., here illegally. So 75% of those foreign born arrested were in the country illegal.
Not all arrested were for violet crimes. Some were for driving without a license. A victimless crime one could argue until you’re involved in a accident with one only to learn he/she doesn’t have insurance.
This is America and most are welcome, just do it legally.

Newt Gingrich is the last great hope for conservatives and Americans in this decade. You can subscribe to the liberal lies [over 300 unsubstanciated charges filed against Gingrich by liberal politicians in the 90's] and scurry away in disgust OR you can listen to the man who may be the only true leader in political discourse today.
