Video: Hillary gets testy with reporter over health care

Rob Port’s got the data but it’s not the policy dispute that’s earning this buzz. It’s Hillary getting snotty with a reporter at the National Association of Black Journalists Presidential Forum after he challenged her on socialized medicine, culminating with this condescending remark that would have raised eyebrows had it come from any white politician who isn’t named “Clinton”: “[Y]ou come introduce yourself to my staff and we will try to give you some information if you’re interested in being educated instead of being rhetorical.” The reaction, per CNN reporter Roland Martin:

Pleasantries and politeness were off the table. It took the moderator nearly 30 seconds to calm down the crowd – the same length of time Sen. Hillary Clinton was supposed to take to answer the question…

It was an audacious move – the audience could have gone either way – but it paid off. The masses, largely, clamored around Clinton.

Largely, perhaps, but not entirely from what I can tell from the clip. Also, no patronizing fake accent for this event? How else is she supposed to prove her “authenticity”? Click the image to watch.

Hillary lies unconvincingly and babbles incoherently when pressured. She would profess to be a six legged frog if she thought it would get her a vote. Her proposal is socialized medicine and her final goal is communism.

When she tries to come off as strong she just comes off as bitchy. This will be her downfall.

Kahuna on August 10, 2007 at 9:37 AM

Mitt’s plan in Mass. is looking better and better to me all the time. Shrillary’s right, Americans do want the government to take care of all their health needs. Why not use the private sector to make the distribution of health care more efficient (This is a compromise which causes much aching in my libertarian heart.). By the way, I’m in the minority. As it is currently run, I would completely abolish the Medicare system.

LarryinVA on August 10, 2007 at 9:37 AM

Does she try to sound like a man, or is that her normal voice? It’s as grating and condescending as Gore’s.

But, it was a pretty good slap down, even though she’s wrong. I wish conservative politicians would have the guts to do that to the press. At least I can say that for her.

pullingmyhairout on August 10, 2007 at 9:39 AM

Medicare isn’t socialized medicine…..the government pays for it LMAO

sweeper on August 10, 2007 at 9:39 AM

LOL, I was just going to recommend this story. It should fire up some heat for Friday. She can’t take rational debate without calling it rhetoric. I don’t have health insurance right now, but I don’t think it’s fair to make others pay for it.

KCtheKat on August 10, 2007 at 9:39 AM

There’s a little bit of an attempted drawl now and then, to my ear.

But jeez, this woman is the epitome of uncharismatic, even at her best. When has a block of wood – in either party – ever won the presidency? I remain cautiously hopeful that America isn’t that stupid.

But she’s right about the “mixed system”. That’s why it’s so hard for the Right to gain ideological traction, when so much has been accepted as compromise.

Halley on August 10, 2007 at 9:41 AM

Wait, Wait…Is there any question that Medicare is socialized medicine/healthcare? No, none. It may be a necesary saftey net (I could agrue that all day), but no doubt its socialized healthcare.

And the gov’t doesn’t tell people where they can go for treatment?????? Are you serious? Happens every single minute of every day.

But then again, it just the field I work in, I’ll have to go to her staff for re-education.

sunny on August 10, 2007 at 9:44 AM

I have made several posting regarding this in the past couple of weeks (I hate it when posters write that).

The candidate who stands up to stupid questions, or arrogant reporters will win the hearts of the viewers.

Journalists have a lower rating than candidates, they are on the bottom of the pecking order. We are all tired of tiresome, lazy, unintellgent, arrogant, loaded questions.

Put them in their place, force them to ask “good” questions, and the people will know you are in control, not the journalists.

C’mon, how can you lead a nation and be pushed around by some left wing “looking for 15 sec. of fame” year-book journalist. We all want a candidate to look at the questionaire and say “That is a really stupid question, next”.

She did it right, and very seldom will it backfire. Damn her.

BTW, Newt is one of the few that will do similiar.

right2bright on August 10, 2007 at 9:45 AM

Medicare and Medicade do not tell you what hospital or Doctor you have to go to-put like campaign funding-these programs only pay you to go to their doctors that support the programs. Therefore, going to your country doctor, that is not a part of these programs will cost you. As the old saying goes “Money talks” and they are telling you what doctors to go to so Sen Clinton is found to be caught in another lie.

Also, go chat with my staff, I do not really have time to sit down and chat with you or have a dialog because you do not agree with me and my idea of effective communications is that it is one sided-my side-and if you do not agree with me talk to someone else.

MSGTAS on August 10, 2007 at 9:46 AM

We will see more of this tough-guy shtick from Hillary, because she thinks it makes her appear tough enough to be POTUS, but it is most unbecoming.

T J Green on August 10, 2007 at 9:51 AM

She said that Medicare isn’t socialized medicine because it helps people and people like it. I wonder what her definition of “socialized medicine” might be…

Also, didn’t she once get put in charge of figuring out a health care plan and then get fired by her own husband?

morganfrost on August 10, 2007 at 9:51 AM

And why is NYC trying to ban the word “Bitch”? So that it can no longer be applied to their Junior Senator!

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on August 10, 2007 at 10:00 AM

What is with her and those stupid, bright colors with matching cheesey jewelry? I think it is a marketing ploy, but I am not sure who it is designed to attract. She comes across as a nasty woman with no sense of style.

To hear that response get that kind of reaction is disheartening.

As a Black man I hate to say it, but the vast majority of Blacks are very ignorant politically.

Also note to Republicans:

It was an audacious move – the audience could have gone either way – but it paid off. The masses, largely, clamored around Clinton.

You’ll never get the Black vote being too much of a chicken@#$% to engage Black people. Take a debate and square off in front of a Black crowd on education, welfare, Katrina. Embarras the Democrat ideologicallly on national television. We pride ourselves on common sense. When a Black crowd that is cheering for Democrat rhetoric, the response should be :

“You all are cheering for rhetoric that has been around for 40 years, and doesn’t work or live up ANY of the goals you seem to have. Is it going to take you another 40 years of rhetoric before you are ready to embrace solutions instead of slogans?

Let me tell you what does work…”

Spirit of 1776 on August 10, 2007 at 10:39 AM

Nah, I don’t think what she did was bad at all. Arrogant but confident too. I completely disagree with her and her ideas but she kicked this guys a$$ all over the stage there. The mistake the questioner made was to reply to her question to him (”do you believe Medicare is socialized medicine”?) with a soft answer. He gave a wishy washy affirmative answer which opened the door for her to go on her rant. If he had just answered her question with a “yes, it is most definitely an example of socialized medicine and its a disaster.” She would have had nothing to say to that.

Zetterson on August 10, 2007 at 10:42 AM

Theworldisnotenough on August 10, 2007 at 10:32 AM

You are absolutely correct. I wonder why in 40 yrs this has never truly been done.

Zetterson on August 10, 2007 at 10:45 AM

OK, I’m qualified here due to nearly 15 years finding affordable health care solutions for individuals, families, and groups:

1. Medicare IS socialized medicine. Medicare is straining the budget and will go broke in its current state sometime before 2050 depending on what figures you use. Some doctors will not accept medicare payments because they can’t stay in business with such low reimbursements. When baby boomers start raiding the medicare program, it will be dramatically more expensive.

2. WE GIVE AWAY FREE HEALTH CARE EVERY DAY to illegal aliens. They ALL know that they don’t NEED insurance because if they get sick or injured, they just go to the emergency room and don’t pay.

3. Hillary IS FOR socialized medicine – remember that Universal health care card that President Clinton held up during his first or second state of the union speech (that was Hillary’s baby of socialized medicine). She just loves being a victim of herself. But her record shows that she wants to tax businesses and people enough to pay for her social programs. It must be tough being a victim all the time.

4. Other countries on socialized medicine do have problems and are not nearly the size of our country. People need to take responsibility for their health and health care would not cost so much. There are fixable problems with our health care system. But there is no vested interested in DC dedicated to fixing them.

Drug companies, insurance companies, and Trial Lawyers take too much of the health care dollar. If you address these issues, the cost of health care would be cut in half in America immediately. If the country successfully address obesity it would be halved again.

Corky on August 10, 2007 at 11:01 AM

To me, she sounded like an @$$, but I suspect in a national debate, leaving race entirely out of the picture, this would have been very well received by the public.

Most of us, whose distate for Hillary ranges from moderate to severe, are completely misunderestimating the woman. I don’t yet see any way for anyone to stop her from going all the way.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on August 10, 2007 at 11:09 AM

Hillary’s loathing of blacks comes through again.

Labamigo on August 10, 2007 at 11:11 AM

benrand on August 10, 2007 at 11:13 AM

Theworldisnotenough, that is a great response. I hope conservative candidates read these posts! Although I’m guessing they would actually say “…is it going to take US another 40 years of rhetoric before WE are ready to embrace solutions instead of slogans?” lest they be accused of an “us” and “them” form of racism (though, there are different ways to appeal to each of us, whether we are black, white, male, female, parents, single, old, young. Or even legal / illegal, regretfully).

She is a phony and I hope the press calls her on these lies. Currently, only 129 news articles on Google News address her “Nukes off the table” comment from 2006 (while 492 cover the Gay debate) but it’s out there to some degree, anyway. More of that right-wing conspiracy, no doubt … how convenient that she has something to blame for any negative comments about her lies!

bloggless on August 10, 2007 at 11:28 AM

Now THAT guy needs to be educated on the FACTS baby!

Hillary is not for socialized medicine, she is for universal health care. Universal health care is paid for by the government through rich taxpayers, but socialized medicine is paid for by the………no, wait a minute……..socialized medicine is vast right wing conspiracy and taxpayers (the rich) pay for universal health care THROUGH the government, but socialized is different since……. bottom line is this….basically he (whatever the brainwashed right wing commenter’s name is) just needs to talk to my staff and get educated…….

Best slapdown I have heard was when some female left wing journalist was asking Donald Rumsfeld some ridiculous loaded question about the war. Rummy looked at her, a little bemused, and said “that’s cute.” and then immediately went to another question.

The black voting population is programmed to mindlessly vote democratic and with very few exceptions, that mindless voting isn’t questioned. If common sense really was seen as a point of pride, why on earth do they need a Republican to point out that “40 years of rhetoric” hasn’t worked? Isn’t that common sense? Why aren’t black leaders getting out in front of black voters and questioning the Dem rhetoric and abysmal track record of black victimization? What have YOU done to help fellow blacks look past the Democratic lip service they have been receiving for decades?

While I doubt it will get a Republican any points to debate in front of a black-only audience, I think it couldn’t hurt and that is where you and I agree. Nowhere to go but up when a conservative is trying to get the black vote.

PBoilermaker on August 10, 2007 at 11:43 AM

My favorite part of the clip came at about 1:08 in when the camera lost track of her for a moment and the screen was all backdrop. If the cameraperson falls asleep covering your comments, what kind of sign is that?

Speaking of sleep… didn’t anybody tell the candidate that her collar looked like most people’s pajamas do when they first roll out of bed (one side half up, one side down)?

And you couldn’t pick up the patronizing put-on drawl?? I heard it from the first words of her response, “Oh, may-ann…(etc).”

Captain Scarlet on August 10, 2007 at 11:52 AM

PBoilermaker,

I don’t see how the black population is any less commeon-sensical than the white or Hispanic populations. If you think common sense is in any sort of decent supply, recall that nearly half the country voted for Kerry in 04. The people don’t pay attention to things, they don’t remember or keep track, that’s why the Left and the MSM gets away with all their BS. That is why politicans, aspiring politicians, and bloggers must educate them, again and again and again. Ignorance only serves the Left (which is why they oppose school choice so vehemently).

Someone should ask her what’s the definition of Socialized Medicare and her plan

BadgerHawk on August 10, 2007 at 12:51 PM

Health care and health insurance are not the same thing.

Hillary attempts to blend the two terms to mean the same thing, but WORDS MEAN THINGS.

Health care, or healthcare, is the prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well being through the services offered by the medical, nursing, and allied health professions.

Health insurance is a type of insurance whereby the insurer pays the medical costs of the insured if the insured becomes sick due to covered causes, or due to accidents.

Just because someone is not enrolled in a health insurance plan does not mean they are “without healthcare”. That’s exactly what Hillary said in this clip.

kooly on August 10, 2007 at 12:53 PM

Also, why does my paycheck say Medicare Taxes?
If the Government pays for it out of our taxes, how is that not a socialized benefit?

Kini on August 10, 2007 at 1:05 PM

It isn’t about doing it right…it is about the person doing it right and how they are treated. A republican would have been maligned in the press.

right2bright on August 10, 2007 at 9:45 AM

Only the stupid viewers. Most viewers can tell if the reporter is asking a valid question or not, and if the political hack is being honest in their answer.

The Seahag was lying through her pie-hole and anyone with experience with any of the entities she mentioned (military medical, VA, Medicare, Medicaid, the myriad state programs) knows it.

Whats the difference?

lsutiger on August 10, 2007 at 2:46 PM

Well, that was interesting. Aside from the content, her gestures continue to look stiff and rehearsed. She comes across as a mom/teacher giving a stern talk and setting the listener straight.

My continuing fashion commentary:

The best I can say is that at least her hair is better this time (not so flat, but it still doesn’t look fresh) and that red color is much better for her than the washed out pink we saw the other day. Other than that, this cut and style is a disaster. It looks sloppy and the open jacket style makes her look overweight (although at least she ditched those mannish lapel jackets–you can wear those occasionally, but not every time!). The narrow red belt cuts her off in the middle and is not slimming. As for the jewelry–ICK!–ditch all those bubble beads except maybe one strand and go for a little variety in color and style. Where are your earrings, girl? Still not ready for prime time.

Of course she’s for state controlled medicine the debacle of a health care system that she tried to put on us when her “husband” was Pres. was exactly that and now she wants us to believe she’s not advocating bank busting health care?..Please, spare me.

“Her proposal is socialized medicine and her final goal is communism.”

rplat said it more concisely than anyone. This is the goal. The Republicans better get with it. All of us need to wake up. This women does not wan the America most of us do. She sees a totally different one. The Constitution doesn’t not mean the same thing to her as it does to most Americans. I can’t believe average Americans think she is just a female Bill.

The liberals I talk to (not left wing nuts) just think she will make things more fair. She will give them more government handouts. She will make their big bad company stay in business and give them more money. This is how they think. And yes, she will let them go to the doctor for free when they don’t feel good. That is why they will vote for her.

This woman is out to harm us. It is time for Republicans to be blunt. This video is the real Hillary. I can’t wait for someone to use it in the campaign. What a mean, nasty and evil person.

I posted this, yesterday, and the moderators chose to delete it – so, at the risk of being censored, again, I’ll say it, again:

This Pig is a Communist.

“We’re going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.”

“We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society.”

- Hillary Clinton.

To the moderators:

Hillary Clinton is a Communist Pig, and her election as President will be the beginning of the destruction of this country. Your censorship of the truth does not alter the truth – it is merely an Orwellian form of thought-control, and something that the Communist Pig would readily embrace.

Locrian on August 10, 2007 at 6:31 PM

I hate to state the obvious, but we already have socialized medicine in America, it is called medicaid/medicare. This covers the truly poor…BTW, most of the people that are uninsured do so by choice (they make over 70,000 dollars a year). Also, as someone who works at a teaching hospital in America, I will say, at least 60% of who we treat don’t have insurance, and they get the same care as those who have insurance, only without the bill…that’s a fact, and these hospitals exist all over the country. Also there are multiple free clinics in every major U.S. city. ER’s are not allowed to turn away people regardless of if they have health insurance, and the people without it don’t pay, the hospital eats the cost. Anyway, all I will say is that though what we have is not perfect, we don’t live in the 3rd world health care the socialist democrats would have you believe. Also, those socialist heath care programs that do exist aren’t doing too well…in England at age 65 you get cut off ( on dialysis? well, if you can’t afford it and you just had a 65th birthday, you have 2 weeks to live). It is scary people, we need to wake up.

Trtle2001 on August 10, 2007 at 7:13 PM

Still, she showed her true colors of which she flat does not care about the American people, only how she looks at the moment.

Hillary Clinton: “You are an evil conservative, and you are stupid!”

Why are people complaining? We should be HAPPY to hear Hillary give answers like this one.

Hillary said she has a lot more explaining to do on this topic. That’s great too; I say she should be given every opportunity. Whether she deigns to grant a formal audience or not, we need to ask this same question over and over and over again between now and next November.

By not using us and we you avoid, from what is going to be a hostile crowd, the knee jerk reaction. The first Republican to do this is not going to be part of the “us.” That will come with timebut certainly not the first time my scenario takes place.

Theworldisnotenough on August 10, 2007 at 9:46 PM

The black voting population is programmed to mindlessly vote democratic and with very few exceptions, that mindless voting isn’t questioned. If common sense really was seen as a point of pride, why on earth do they need a Republican to point out that “40 years of rhetoric” hasn’t worked?

PBoilermaker on August 10, 2007 at 11:43 AM

Black people do not mindlessly, that in my opinion acribes a character to Black voting that does not exist. The Democrats know we vote Democrat culturally because they play to cultural biases. Cultural biases aren’t questioned by the culture, ever. So yes they do need the question to be asked. That breaks the silence and challenges the culture. Take “hip hop” as an example. Once it was questioned, mocked and imitasted outside of the culture that created it is when the Black cultural norms were challenged.

Why aren’t black leaders getting out in front of black voters and questioning the Dem rhetoric and abysmal track record of black victimization?

That’s a question for MSM executive producers. Email Michelle and ask her to feature this guy on O’Reily. The “leaders” are whoever gets the airtime, and that’s not conservative Blacks. LaShawn Barber could change the culture if she were given an oppurtunity.

What have YOU done to help fellow blacks look past the Democratic lip service they have been receiving for decades?

Down here in S. Mexifornia you can get ‘healthcare’ at the community clinic. (I know all about this because i went to these clinics before my husband got health care thru his job.) It might take all day sitting in the waiting room with illegal aliens who have who knows what, but it’s cheap because the taxpayers foot the bill.
