Video: “Be Kind Rewind” trailer

The plot device is genius. It’s going to end up being one big extended popcult in-joke; if they’re smart they’ll keep the story and exposition short and sweet to allow more time for movie goofs. What makes it intriguing is the director — Michel Gondry, who was responsible for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and who’s known for preferring highbrow fare. Makes me think this may end up being more interesting than a standard, if inspired, gimmick comedy. I guess it all depends on whether it’s been conceived simply as a vehicle for Jack Black to ham it up or if he’s here in the service of a larger concept, like Sandler in “Punch Drunk Love.”
Exit question: Is Black trying to look like Mark David Chapman or did it just shake out that way?

It’s too bad Danny Glover put his taint on this production.
PBoilermaker on August 10, 2007 at 2:19 PM
I don’t know why, but I laughed.
peski on August 10, 2007 at 2:22 PM
At least that’s one way to save others from seeing some of the dumbest movies ever produced. If only I get those countless hours back…
df4jc on August 10, 2007 at 2:23 PM
The trailer actually made me believe the movie won’t suck.
But then I support Fred! on basically the same principle.
a4g on August 10, 2007 at 2:25 PM
it’s like chanell 101 the movie.
jummy on August 10, 2007 at 2:31 PM

WHEN WILL THE INHUMANITY EEENNNNNDDD!!!!!One
jummy on August 10, 2007 at 2:33 PM
That would be the other kind of taint.
PBoilermaker on August 10, 2007 at 2:36 PM
Well Black is trying to portray insanity, and Mark David Chapman had a clear shot at Yoko Ono and shot John instead.
TunaTalon on August 10, 2007 at 2:42 PM
Freaking hilarious. YouTube gone crazy.

“(is Jack Black) here in the service of a larger concept”
Yes, I believe he is.
If only they had Ernie Hudson instead of Mos Def.
When I was a kid the video films to have were The Terminator, Robocop, Predator, Kick Boxer (to a much lesser extent), Rambo, and anything else with masses of guns and violence and blood. Also, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, YOU KNOW WHY.
Apeking on August 10, 2007 at 2:57 PM
That made me laugh out loud… Does that mean I’m evil?
I laugh at BE MY YOKO ONO (Barenaked Ladies song) too…maybe not.
As to the movie… Glover sealed it for me. Won’t PAY to see it.
tickleddragon on August 10, 2007 at 3:02 PM
Wait a minute. Jack Black. Mos Def. Bouncing off eachother. I am SO there!
But I will hate myself in the morning
Militant Bibliophile on August 10, 2007 at 3:04 PM
It looks like a great idea for a 15 minute Adult Swim series that they’ve tried to stretch into a movie. If somebody makes an amateur, 20-minute version of it I might watch it.
RightOFLeft on August 10, 2007 at 3:06 PM
Is this a guy thing? It looks just plain unappealing–but then I don’t get out much.
Suzzsin on August 10, 2007 at 3:18 PM
Wasn’t this a skit on The Amanda Show?

AP likes this because of the “robot”…

That looks really funny. I’m not sure why.

Freeking beat me too it.

P.S. Either that or someone was watching stuff over at TheForce.net and realized that half if not more, were better than the Lucas reimaginings.
P.P.S. That’s right, I called Lucas’s prequels reimaginings because they had nothing to do with IV-VI. NOTHING!
P.P.P.S. IV-VI looks like an lil anime guy.

Forgot to link the Theater over there for that 0.005% who haven’t seen it. TF.N

surprisingly, Mos Def, has shown himself to be a real talent.
Opinionnation on August 10, 2007 at 4:25 PM
Highbrow fare?
MadisonConservative on August 10, 2007 at 4:34 PM
At the risk of sounding less than manly after Suzzsin’s comment — I don’t really see myself watching thing until it comes out on cable… and even then I can’t imagine watching it all at once.
Just doesn’t look Scottish to me.
krakatoa on August 10, 2007 at 5:12 PM
I think so. Maybe something about citizen
journalismnarration – “sometimes the best stories are the ones we make up.”This looks fantastic. I can’t wait to see it, and I generally don’t like Jack Black’s films.
nailinmyeye on August 10, 2007 at 5:46 PM
My first thought too.
Still….this looks better than 3/4 of the crap currently circulating in theatres.
Which is precisely the point, I guess.
BTW, I think Mos Def is becoming quite the good actor.
The Ugly American on August 10, 2007 at 6:44 PM
I know I’m gonna get chastised for this, but, I LOVE Jack Black. When I am in the mood to laugh my butt off, I just have to plug in Nacho Libre and that is all I need!
heatherrc77 on August 10, 2007 at 7:06 PM
Hmmm, I vote for: “a vehicle for Jack Black to ham it up”
Jones Zemkophill on August 10, 2007 at 8:24 PM
I even like the bad Jack Black movies so I’ll see this one. Unfortunately Danny ( save Gary Grimes) Glover is in it, so I ‘ll have to wait a whole day to stream it online..
Bummer!
TheSitRep on August 10, 2007 at 9:24 PM
You dumb ass ! it’s Gary Graham!
Oh, so it is.
TheSitRep on August 10, 2007 at 9:31 PM
Mon dieu! Mia Farrow and Jack Black and Danny Glover all in the same flick? Talk about new chits for playing “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon!”
Mia Farrow and/or Danny Glover w/Jack Black: “Be Kind Rewind”
Jack Black and Lisa Bonet: “High Fidelity”
Lisa Bonet and Mickey Rourke: “Angel Heart”
Mickey Rourke and Kevin Bacon: “Diner”
(And that’s the best I can do at 4:23MT on a Saturday morning…)
Captain Scarlet on August 11, 2007 at 6:25 AM
I was actually looking forward to seeing it until I seen that commie a$$hole Glover was in it.
