Breaking: Principal of NYC Arabic-themed school resigns over “Intifada” t-shirts

posted at 12:02 pm on August 10, 2007 by Allahpundit

Just breaking on Fox News. Apparently Bloomberg himself announced it on his radio show. The unlikely hero in bringing public attention to this, aside from the New York Post and its relentless coverage? Randi Weingarten, president of the United Federation of Teachers, who lowered the boom on principal Debbie Almontaser for her pitiful literalist defense of the term “intifada”:

“I’m very concerned about it, and it’s not often that I write as blistering a letter as I wrote, but it’s not OK to explain away ‘intifada,’ ” she said. “Maybe this was just a real error in judgment for which she has now apologized, or maybe, ultimately, she should not be a principal.

“She now has a much higher standard that she has to prove, that this is not the way she’s going to run that school.”…

Almontaser defended the shirts, first reported Monday by The Post, by defining “intifada” as a “shaking off” of oppression rather than acknowledging its widespread association with the call to violence among some Palestinians against Israelis.

“I’m glad she apologized quickly, but this is the kind of thing that you immediately say, ‘No. People shouldn’t have T-shirts like that. That’s warmongering. That’s preaching,’ ” said Weingarten.

“That’s something that ought to be denounced, not be explained away.”

Which side of the dispute did Mayor Mike’s DOE come down on? As if you need to ask:

Department of Education spokesman David Cantor said Almontaser’s next-day apology should end the matter.

“She fully repudiated those statements,” he said. “We’re satisfied. We’re moving on.”

Evidently they didn’t because now she’s been, ahem, “shaken off.” Au revoir.

Update: Here’s the article at Fox News. Bare bones thus far.

Go figure. The first day this week I don’t do a post on this school, and she up and resigns.

JammieWearingFool on August 10, 2007 at 12:08 PM

Then there was the British principal who forced students to write there is no other god but allah as a handwriting exercise. What’s with pricipals?

Okay, so what jihadist have they brought in to replace her?

PBoilermaker on August 10, 2007 at 12:13 PM

Find a way to send your children to private school…seriously.

Asher on August 10, 2007 at 12:15 PM

Excellent news. This coupled with the low registration for the school so far, I say let’s just scrap the whole damn thing and deport every Muslim out of the US.

Sorry for that “deport every Muslim out of the US”, thingy. That was not meant to be publically expressed.

This was a disaster waiting to happen all along! What a STUPID idea and then to NOT even have her written teaching plans this close to opening? This was never a real “school”..it was a propoganda place using children. VILE>
To “Debbie”…dont let the door hit you in your hijab!

Well, there are three Imams on the school’s board of directors, so I’m sure they’ll come up with an equally suitable replacement for head jihadist principal.

Perhaps you should have just said that the “deport every Muslim out of the US” was just “shaking off” kind of thingy…

The school is built, approve vouchers for underprivileged kids, turn it into a charter school and be done with it.

LakeRuins on August 10, 2007 at 12:45 PM

I say knowing about this story saved so much trouble later on. We as Americans don’t have to be this tolerant. Try to bring your jihad here, we’ll return the favor.

Terrorism, like “Intifada” , is a bumper sticker or T-shirt.
I think this cartoon sez it best!

it is a republican plot….bush and cheney..just kidding!

robo on August 10, 2007 at 1:44 PM

I wouldn’t celebrate too hard.

This is typical for the “leftist academic collective,” one really nasty act gets repudiated and the rest of the nasty acts get through. A closer look at this “madrassa” as it carries on is more than in order.

Merovign on August 10, 2007 at 2:58 PM

Follow the money.

Kini on August 10, 2007 at 3:13 PM

You want an intifada, baby? We’ll show you an intifada!

Tantor on August 10, 2007 at 3:58 PM

Don’t let the door…. you know the rest.

After decades of relentless propaganda, a person who attacks awake for this statement is viewed as a hero. This is alleged to be “our” morality.

But before throwing stones at awake, we should pause to consider the assumptions that went into our First Amendment understanding about religion. Jefferson justified freedom of religion by stating it’s not skin off his back if his neighbor is a Mahometan, among other religions. The trouble is that Jefferson was wrong. Islam is a clear danger to the rest of us–even if we ignore the evil Islam does to muslim women, muslim gays and basically any muslim.

I hope those who attack awake deal honestly with the details of the situation & don’t just spew cheap rhetoric.

What ? CAIR is not rushing in to defend her ? That’s a big surprise.

Asher on August 10, 2007 at 12:15 PM

Yes… we all get to pay for the failed public schools whether we have any kids in the system or not. Next the government wants to take over healthcare… oh joy.
