Ten million views and counting at YouTube, but not until yesterday when someone sent me the link had I heard of it. Same with the BBC, apparently — the clip’s three months old but they’re only getting around to it now. Make me feel better and tell me you haven’t seen this yet either so that I don’t feel as far behind the viral video curve as the farking Beeb.
Reminds me of the news team battle royal scene in “Anchorman.” Except, you know, with animals.
Update: Just arrived in my inbox:
Ace posted it months ago (maybe 6 weeks, really).
I wish I was dead.
Update: From the comments:
Not only did I see it when Ace posted it, but I saw it on ABC last night.
I hereby formally tender my resignation.

Gee, I saw this 3 months ago. LOL

Sorry Allah, but I saw it a while ago too. It’s a great video though. Well worth watching.
Kowboy on August 9, 2007 at 8:13 PM
If even one person hasn’t seen it yet then it’ll have been worth it.
Is there even one, though?
Allahpundit on August 9, 2007 at 8:15 PM
First for me AP… so you’re not the biggest loser.
MT on August 9, 2007 at 8:17 PM
yeah this was on my 3D Modeling forums like months ago…
Kaptain Amerika on August 9, 2007 at 8:18 PM
oh it’s good… but just shows how Grazers get themselves killed… why owuld they have walked right up on the Lions… why not go around?
Kaptain Amerika on August 9, 2007 at 8:19 PM
Awesome.
I’m only the second biggest.
Allahpundit on August 9, 2007 at 8:20 PM
This is my first time, but then, I don’t hand at YouTube. But, my grandkids hadn’t seen it before either. So, you’re O.K. Allah.
sharinlite on August 9, 2007 at 8:21 PM
Hey, Allahpundit, the revolving headlines at the top are highly valued, but we have no way of commenting on any of the excellent stories there unless we break in on a thread.
I’m not sure conceptually how it would work, but is there any way of integrating a comment feature under the headlines on mass — or even a Javascript chat room like LGF’s “Lizard Lounge”?
Christoph on August 9, 2007 at 8:22 PM
never seen it before
offroadaz on August 9, 2007 at 8:22 PM
Not only did I see it when Ace posted it, but I saw it on ABC last night. That’s right, Allah, your lagging behind an MSM network summer replacement crapfest. Go have a beer. And since I’m lame enough that I watched an MSM network summer replacement crapfest, I’ll go have one too. Skol!
Bad Penny on August 9, 2007 at 8:23 PM
Sure is. I expect it to launch within the week.
Allahpundit on August 9, 2007 at 8:23 PM
ugh. you’re.
Bad Penny on August 9, 2007 at 8:24 PM
I never seen it either.
Time for me to climb back into my hole.
F15Mech on August 9, 2007 at 8:25 PM
I’d seen it, but not until 48 hours ago on the premiere of ABC’s “iCaught”. It’s spectacular though (the video, not iCaught).
flip on August 9, 2007 at 8:25 PM
I first saw this at Born Again Redneck Yogi. He’s originally from S. Africa, and still has several family members there, one of whom happens to be the one with the pet hippo. I think someone he knows sent the video to him or at least linked him to it. So I might have had an unfair advantage in seeing it months ago. :-)
Kowboy on August 9, 2007 at 8:26 PM
I hadn’t seen it either; I guess that makes me the third biggest. (Hey, as second biggest, you have to try harder!)
rmgraha on August 9, 2007 at 8:29 PM
Yea, me. I hadn’t seen it until now but I heard about it a few weeks ago. Sorry.
repvoter on August 9, 2007 at 8:37 PM
That is so last year.
But good last year, good last year.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on August 9, 2007 at 8:40 PM
I’m guessing the calf died anyway. You’ve got to believe that between the lions and the crocodile, they put enough wounds into it that fatal infection would set in. So that’s the sad part, the poor calf probably died a more agaonizing death escaping than if he’d just perished there.
radjah shelduck on August 9, 2007 at 8:42 PM
It didn’t look to me that the buffalo were doing much “negotiating” with the lions. I just wish our species would show the same determination in getting back our taken…for example the South Koreans.
Obviously, the buffalo were not from France.
Blaise on August 9, 2007 at 8:46 PM
I’m not sure how not having seen something on the Internet makes you a loser, but that’s probably because I hadn’t seen it either. Is the video supposed to cut off after 5 minutes? It says 8:23, but it doesn’t go that long. Cuts off right when the big herd is surrounding the lions.
Jim Treacher on August 9, 2007 at 8:46 PM
I saw it on Althouse last May.
GPE on August 9, 2007 at 8:47 PM
AP, this is the first thing I’ve sent your way that I’ve seen show up in the thread, so you made my day.
BadgerHawk on August 9, 2007 at 8:47 PM
The one I saw lasted 8 minutes. Haven’t watched the one here.
Kowboy on August 9, 2007 at 8:48 PM
I remember reading somewhere that the most dangerous animal in Africa is the cape buffalo. (Excluding humans, that is)
Bigfoot on August 9, 2007 at 8:48 PM
I hadn’t seen it either. I guess I just suck.
p0s3r on August 9, 2007 at 8:49 PM
I only heard about it today and saw it for the first time today too. Don’t feel bad.
I have no friends though, so no one forwards me anything :(

What do you know? This week my favorite blog just added a new feature: Best of the Ace of Spades archives.
Spirit of 1776 on August 9, 2007 at 8:51 PM
I saw it, but I also just returned from a trip to South Africa, and was fortunate enough to spend a week at Kruger, it was AWESOME! We did not see anything as cool at “Battle at Kruger”, but we did see two cheetahs take out an impala and then fight over it for about 1/2 an hour. We saw so many animals and birds, some I didn’t even know existed. We literally took about 1000 pictures. Anybody want to see any?
silenced majority on August 9, 2007 at 8:52 PM
Bullies.
astuddis on August 9, 2007 at 8:53 PM
AP, don’t you read Ace regularly? I saw it there and showed it to my wife and friends. Great game of tug-of-war. Everyone I showed thought the buf would be dead by the end. Not sure what happened to it in the long run, but maybe it survived its wounds.
Snidely Whiplash on August 9, 2007 at 8:53 PM
I’ve never seen this before! Awesome!

[Jim Treacher on August 9, 2007 at 8:46 PM]
Yeah, I saw the 8:23 one. But I haven’t seen this 5 minute one. This is awesome, AP.
Dusty on August 9, 2007 at 9:03 PM
No I didn’t, I do well to post comments. How do you do something like that. Please pardon my beginner-ness.
silenced majority on August 9, 2007 at 9:04 PM
I thought iCaught was a decent show. It provides updates on famous videos like this. Even recent stuff like the Merry Miller-Holly Hunter debacle.
Valiant on August 9, 2007 at 9:05 PM
I hadn’t seen it before either. Fascinating.
packsoldier on August 9, 2007 at 9:05 PM
I saw this way before Ace, and the link came from a gossip only blogger.
I am sorry, Allah. It’s not you, it’s me.

No worries. Well you can go to sites like flickr and create an account. (Their basic account is free). Then assuming your photos are digital, you can upload them to share with your friends, family, etc online.

Does MT have an iPhone?
(Disclaimer: I hadn’t seen it either.)

Go easy on yourself Allah. You can’t be first at everything. Where would the fun be in that?

Beef. It’s what’s for dinner. NOT!
Never saw the video until today. Thank you AP, it was awesome!

This never would have happened if AP had an iPhone…

Sorry Allah, I too viewed this clip many weeks ago. Also, on the same day, one of cheetah taking a whizz on some environmental half wits while perched on a sunroof…
Zorro on August 9, 2007 at 9:49 PM
Zorro, that was a classic. I love that video.
Stormy70 on August 9, 2007 at 10:04 PM
Haha! Allah, I actually forgot to tip you with this the other day.
Here’s my history with the vid… I’ve known about it for a while, but I didn’t actually sit and watch it until Fox & Friends started talking about it a couple of days ago. We were actually at a family thing in June when one of my cousins saw my laptop, and being at his sisters and knowing she has wireless he pulled it up and was like “dude, you’ve got to see this AND WATCH ALL THE WAY THROUGH!”… But there were too many family members around talking and preparing food, etc. that I eventually gave up and figured I’d catch it later… And again, forgot all about it until Fox & Friends brought it up the other day.
All that said, one of the coolest videos ever! You’re so sad for the baby for a few minutes, and then out of no where that whole crew rolls up and you can almost hear them say “what’s up now b*tches!?” (My apologies on the B-word to NYC councilwoman Darlene Mealy)

It’s old (as has been well established). I almost had laughter causing incontinence however due to the oh-so-sad series of updates. Freakin. Funny.

Dear Michelle “The Boss” Malkin,
Better snatch me up while Rusty is on vacation.
How can you go wrong when my portfolio contains this?

First for me too, guess I was a Kruger virgin. Anyone got a smoke?
infidel4life on August 9, 2007 at 10:55 PM
I haven’t seen this yet. I seem to be out of the loop. Guess this was not PETA approved. Is it true PETA folks brought a truck full of turnips and started feeding the lions? Turnips, not Buffalo!
StuLongIsland on August 9, 2007 at 11:01 PM
Ok Spirit of 1776, I hope this link works, it is my first time to post a link. The pictures are all out of order, but I hope you enjoy.

Read the stickies. . . no wait.
1. Type the words that you want to be the link, like all in blue and stuff.
2. Highlight those words.
3. Click ‘link’.
4. Paste the link into the box that pops up.
5. Click ok.

Your welcome Spirit of 1776. I am going back to South Africa in October starting our trip in Capetown then onto Victoria Falls, then back to Kruger. I am sure I will have another 1000 or more photos to share when I get home in November.

Heh.
It’s pretty amazing that something could be viewed 10 million times and remain semi-anonymous. Easy for me, though. It could have been 100 million. I’m clueless on this stuff.

Saw it a few weeks ago during the thirty minutes a week I’m allowed online. :o)
oakpack on August 10, 2007 at 1:00 AM
I saw a pretty amazing video a few months ago and it goes like this, a gazelle gets attacked by a croc and a hippo comes in the water and forces the croc to let go of, takes the gazelle to land and sadly stands by next to it whiel it passes away.
Dave from IE on August 10, 2007 at 1:30 AM
Silenced Majority, nice pics from your trip. How many cameras did you use? Nikon 8800 and Olympus, anything else?
Snidely Whiplash on August 10, 2007 at 1:53 AM
On the bright side AP, there’s a potential future for you producing the new Gieco series about “better ways to spend 15 minutes on the Internet”
Wind Rider on August 10, 2007 at 6:11 AM
That was the 1st for me and thanks.
That was one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
I think this internets thing might, just might catch on.
What would have been cool is if the buffalo had surrounded the lions and pushed them so near the water that the crocks could have got’em.

TheSitRep on August 10, 2007 at 7:30 AM
My camera was the Olympus, the other camera belong to Rotary friends on the trip with us, so I am not sure what types of cameras they were using. All had pretty powerful zooms, not that you needed the zoom that much, most of the time the animals hung right by the road with the exception of the hippos. It appeared they were pretty used to people in cars. However, about a week before we got there some guy, at a neighboring reserve got out of his car to get a better picture and was eating by a pack of lions. Needless to say, we stayed in our vehicles.
silenced majority on August 10, 2007 at 8:08 AM
Agreed Allah, I saw it some time back. It was sent to me via email and I viewed it through Windows Media Player. It is the best natural wildlife video I have ever seen.

albuddy on August 10, 2007 at 5:43 PM
That crocodile splashing the lions with its tail as it tried to steal their hapless prey proves Darwinian evolution.
It probably took them millions of years to figure out that big cats hate water.
But crocs did it.
(Cape buffalo must be mighty tasty.)
