Leftist sets up fake KKK site to smear Fred? Update: Fake KKK site now redirects … to Silky’s campaign site (bumped)

posted at 5:12 pm on August 9, 2007 by Allahpundit

No confession yet but it looks that way. Nice work by Captain Ed. Follow the links he provides to the FEC receipts for “Henry Reynolds” and compare the addresses for yourself.

Ed seems to think it’s a genuine false flag operation (“underhanded”) meant to make people think Fred has some actual fans in the Klan. I think it’s more in line with WhiteHouse.org or when the Soros machine famously took advantage of Cheney misstating the name of FactCheck.org during his vice-presidential debate with Silky in 2004. There’s no deception, really, unless you’re a halfwit MSNBC producer; they’re simply trying to capitalize on the domain name confusion to goof on any supporters of their hate object who might stumble onto their site instead. The fact that the domain was obviously deliberately chosen to resemble the domain of the official campaign site is actually the biggest giveaway, and probably what raised Ed’s suspicion in the first place. If Reynolds or whoever had really wanted to plant a false flag, he’d have been better off calling it “KlansmenForFred.com” and feeding the link to Kos.

Exit question: You think he’ll call Ed back?

Update: I completely missed Ed’s update. Sweet enough to earn this post the rare, coveted bump.

Update: Classy guy — the redirect no longer goes to the Edwards campaign but to Goatse.

Not a chance. This guy had no idea someone like Capt Ed would find and write about this. AND track down his info to boot!
I think this guy is going to get very little “lawyering” done for the next few days. I am glad you linked to this. It isnt the first, it wont be the last, but standing up to the “progressives” smear tactics is crucial!

labwrs on August 9, 2007 at 12:47 PM

what if it isnt a ruse? and its real?

zane on August 9, 2007 at 12:48 PM

No, but he now has one credential for becoming a Diarist at TNR.

Dusty on August 9, 2007 at 12:49 PM

It says a lot more about how Democrats (or at least this Democrat) view average people than anything else.

If they didn’t think American voters were morons, they would have tried to craft something more convincing.

Asher on August 9, 2007 at 12:52 PM

Fake but accurate eh!

oilbertan on August 9, 2007 at 12:53 PM

And the guy who set it up is a lawyer. I wonder if he has gotten more from MoveOn then he has given and a $250 donation to Jean Pierre Kerry certainly doesn’t rank as a ringing endorsement.

LakeRuins on August 9, 2007 at 12:53 PM

I strongly agree with Asher. And how long before one of the lefty blogs grab and run with this?
The Dems truely think the average American is an idiot. This is further proof (as if we needed it!)

Like Beauchamp, he probably amazed himself at how clever he was to think up this idea, even though he didn’t have a clue what he was getting into.

Nosferightu on August 9, 2007 at 12:56 PM

These guys are famous for this domain name crap.
Look what they did to Joe Lieberman last year, they had no less than 4 fake Lieberman domains and sites set up and they did the same thing with “Path to 911″.

This no different from somebody opening a storefront a few blocks from a campaign headquarters and only changing one letter in the name on the sigh. It’s fraud and slander at minimum.

I still baffles me that the “netroots” and left get the support they do in this country.

[Bad Candy on August 9, 2007 at 12:57 PM]

I’m in the iffy department on that, too.

Dusty on August 9, 2007 at 1:05 PM

This is funny stuff, but c’mon, fred? has questionable behavior with campaign funds and lobbying. There is no need for this. It’s laziness. I took a few minutes and searched the FEC site and it looks like freddie boy was accepting donations right up until he decided not to run (21 days before the filing deadline) in 2002. The funny part is that fred? had always said he would not run for re-election. But when it came down to it, he waffled on that for almost a year all the while collecting contributions for his senate campaign. Is it possible that fred?, AS HE PROMISED, never intended on running, but kept collecting contributions so he could then funnel that cash to his son after he converted to a PAC?

I’m not an expert at reading this, but it does show all the contributions he received up until April 2002. It then shows where he created a PAC and began paying his son $4000 a month. Of course, there was little or nothing done to make money for the PAC and the lions share of it was funneled to his kid.

fred? says this is how things are done in Washington. hahaha Ok freddie boy, sounds like your fake image designed to present you as a good old boy was really a front for someone who is pretty savvy at working the Washington insider game.

And two more words…..Abramoff = lobbyist. fred? was an arm twisting lobbyist that always went for the bucks instead of conservative ideologies.

Yeah, who cares about this obvious fake website? freds? real persona is what will send him packing. Well, look on the bright side. He has a PAC and $3.4 million that he can funnel to his family after he pulls out of contention. (that is if he ever announces)

csdeven on August 9, 2007 at 1:06 PM

this began a while back. some industrious members of the nutroots found an old episode of a drama show in which fred! played a white supremacist character named “knox pooley”. it’s sort of been their little nickname for him since.

e.g.:
http://clowncentralstation.blogspot.com/2007/05/wise-words-from-knox-pooley.html

http://knoxpooley.blogspot.com/

one nutrooter laid out the “idea” thusly:

“It makes no difference whether HE believes it. The objective is to convince the VOTERS that he believes it. That’s how swiftboating works.”

fogw on August 9, 2007 at 1:22 PM

Ok, so looked a little into the domain. If you look at the source code, he’s just pulling the material from KKK.com. It’s the right domain, I just felt it needed a strike through.

Anyway, his meta tags for the page are:

Fred Thompson, Fred Tompson, Fred Thomson, racial purity, mud people, white christian america

The Law Offices of Henry F. Reynolds also has a website, but it’s hosted with Mecca Hosting – not GoDaddy as this one is. Not surprising, though, because Mecca only hosts business sites.

Jonas Parker on August 9, 2007 at 1:07 PM

I doubt that any criminal charges would be brought over something like this, but an attorney can get disbarred pretty quick over any incident involving deception. I know attorneys are dicks, but this is the sort of thing a Bar association will take VERY seriously if somebody makes a complaint.

Of course you’d need to have all your facts in order before you make any kid of complaint. (A Bar Association isn’t like the police; you can’t just tell them your suspicion and expect them to do their own investigation.) But if somebody can get hard proof, this really is worth following up on.

logis on August 9, 2007 at 1:30 PM

Let’s see tar Fred with a false association to the Klan but the dems go out of their way to pander to racist groups like La Raza.

So let me get this straight
white racist = evil
Brown racist = diversity and honor
GOP = Racist
DNC= Enlighten and diversity.
