Video: wicked Guitar Hero track

Somewhere around here I have footage of Daveed Gartenstein-Ross laying down some mean Guitar Hero play. I shot it at CPAC back in March. Daveed is very good. Scary good.

But I’m not sure that he’s Deliverance good.

lorien1973 on August 8, 2007 at 5:53 PM

Man, I suck at these types of games. DDR I’m even worse at (feet are too big for the footpads). I can play most other types of games though.

Bad Candy on August 8, 2007 at 5:56 PM

Thanks for posting the Deliverance scene. Gave me chills and at the same time to see that kid smile was so heartwarming! Great film making and a brilliant musical composition.

The other vid gave me a headache.

RushBaby on August 8, 2007 at 6:07 PM

But I’m not sure that he’s Deliverance good.

It’s not Deliverance without the freaky kid that gives me nightmares….Squeal like a Pig!

Mike D. on August 8, 2007 at 6:21 PM

Squeal like a pig? That’s nothing. Arafat used to Roar Like A Tiger.

RushBaby on August 8, 2007 at 6:23 PM

Needs more cow bell.

heh…that is pretty good…felt like I was canoeing in the Appalachians…

JetBoy on August 8, 2007 at 6:28 PM

What am I missing about this? Is this done with a game controller?

csdeven on August 8, 2007 at 6:40 PM

He’s got a purty mouth.

csdeven on August 8, 2007 at 6:40 PM

Yeah cs, most people shell out for a Guitar Hero guitar, which has buttons to represent strings.

Bad Candy on August 8, 2007 at 6:49 PM

Bad Candy – I agree about DDR – and I wear size 7s!!!

Califemme on August 8, 2007 at 6:58 PM

I can’t play that game to save my life but it’s fun to watch others who know what they’re doing.

Yakko77 on August 8, 2007 at 7:00 PM

What am I missing about this? Is this done with a game controller?

csdeven on August 8, 2007 at 6:40 PM

No, it has the guitar thing that you fret with your left and it has five keys that you hit instead of strings.
It is kinda cheesy but it comes with a bunch of rock songs.
If I didn’t suck at it i’d get one.

I’d rather shoot something from an airplane.

TheSitRep on August 8, 2007 at 7:01 PM

What am I missing about this? Is this done with a game controller?

csdeven

The “conroller” is actually a “guitar”….that you can customize and everything. Not a real guitar, but shaped like one…

JetBoy on August 8, 2007 at 7:02 PM

My kids have this and even my 14 year old daughter excels at it. It is fun to watch but no way could I do it.

Sweet holy Moses! I’ll stick with Dawn of War and Command & Conquer.

Bryan on August 8, 2007 at 7:23 PM

Man, its been ages since I’ve played C&C. I’ve yet to play Dawn of War, my PS2 is busted and I’m too pissed off at Sony(for a lot of reasons) to consider buying any Sony console at this point.

Bad Candy on August 8, 2007 at 7:31 PM

Anyone here a Katamari Damacy fan?

Bad Candy on August 8, 2007 at 7:34 PM

Pong anybody?

On-my-soap-box on August 8, 2007 at 7:39 PM

That was incredible!

My kids play Guitar Hero. I stink, big time.

However, I can do a pretty impressive finger song of Row, Row, Row Your Boat—but it’s nothing compared to this girl.

IrishEi on August 8, 2007 at 7:42 PM

Speaking of Deliverance, am I the only one who has noticed that most of what the left believes about the right can be boiled down to a movie?

Bad Candy on August 8, 2007 at 7:48 PM

Great, now let’s see him do Freebird.

Ha, seriously though. Is this the PS3 version? I’ve got the Xbox 360 one, and Deliverance mostly definitely isn’t on there.

Need to check that out, maybe it’s a downloadable song.

John from OPFOR on August 8, 2007 at 7:53 PM

Not doubting the talent, etc. But I’m wondering why one wouldn’t shell out a couple of hundred dollars for a used banjo (or guitar) to learn music in the meat world instead.

I understand the first-person shooter games, the racing games and all that. They allow someone to pretend to do something most people would never be able to do in reality.

OK, old guitar player (and obvious techno-magnon) here. I’ll slink off into my outdated world now.

SailorDave on August 8, 2007 at 8:23 PM

Some people do both Dave, some are good at one, but not the other.

Bad Candy on August 8, 2007 at 8:27 PM

Topical.

fusionaddict on August 8, 2007 at 8:40 PM

So being good at this is something to be really proud of? Does that mean I should stop nagging my 18 year old to get off the couch and get a job?? Cus he can get through Freebird without a mistake. Is there a job market for that?

Bad Penny on August 8, 2007 at 8:40 PM

Dave, I think playing Guitar Hero actually encouraged my son to spend more time playing his real guitar. Plus it introduced him to lots of songs from the golden age of guitar, the 70s.

Bad Penny on August 8, 2007 at 8:42 PM

I LOVE Guitar Hero and playing a little tipsy actually makes me better. But if I were more the most wasted girl in town I couldn’t do that, that was incredible!!

hollygolightly on August 8, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Does that mean I should stop nagging my 18 year old to get off the couch and get a job?? Cus he can get through Freebird without a mistake. Is there a job market for that?

Bad Penny on August 8, 2007 at 8:40 PM

Yeah, if he can inject some life back into the sissyfied so-called “rock” we’ve had to endure ever since those whiny Seattle losers first mumbled into a mic while staring at their shoes. Now, THERE’S a market.

ScottMcC on August 8, 2007 at 9:15 PM

Call of Duty:United Offensive is my gig.

I second the motion that if your fingers are that good, you ought to be playing an actual instrument.

TexasDan on August 8, 2007 at 9:18 PM

Thus, I stick to Counter-Strike.

SouthernDem on August 8, 2007 at 9:19 PM

Why not just play a real guitar?

csdeven on August 8, 2007 at 9:48 PM

Pong anybody?

On-my-soap-box on August 8, 2007 at 7:39 PM

ROFLMAO…best line on this post…you’re showing your age, and mine too!

I remember my first Atari system, it was so advanced for its time, but now it looks so stone age!

I’d rather shoot something from an airplane.

TheSitRep on August 8, 2007 at 7:01 PM

I used to be addicted to Fighter Ace, I joined a squandron and all that, great fun, but man next thing you know 12 hours have gone by!

Liberty or Death on August 8, 2007 at 11:09 PM

A much appreciated GEEKFEST thread. That was pretty incredible, but then I’d HEARD of this game, but have never seen it. All my gamer-geekiness abandoned me with the split from my ex-boyfriend (BIG geek.)

That finger dancing thing linked above…wow – just, wow. All I learned in college (extracurricularly) was how to flick bottle caps with EVIL precision. But then…we had no game consoles, and PCs were still not in every dormroom yet. (87-88)

tickleddragon on August 8, 2007 at 11:35 PM

That was banjolicious.

Mojave Mark on August 8, 2007 at 11:51 PM

Best track EVER!!!. And if you don’t think so then you suck, plain and simple.

- The Cat

P.S. IrishEi on August 8, 2007 at 7:42 PM Like kewl dude.

MirCat on August 8, 2007 at 11:57 PM

I was gonna say almost as hard as Freebird. I’ve changed my mind.

Nonfactor on August 9, 2007 at 12:59 AM

Guitar Hero?

I’ll take mine rare.

Or perhaps well done.

Freelancer on August 9, 2007 at 1:22 AM

I first played the banjo in 1984. The biggest problem with playing the banjo is that people automatically deduct 100 points from your IQ.

As an avid Guitar Hero player, the advice I would give for this song is to not slap or flick the strum switch. Instead, watch Deliverance, and notice the fingerpicking. Imitate the fingerpicking rhythm and you will hit every note.

PS: if someone knows how to add songs to Guitar Hero, please direct me there. I want to play it with some serious Dick Dale guitar thrashing.

Sensei Ern on August 9, 2007 at 8:27 AM

If the kids who spend hours mastering Guitar Hero would spend hours mastering a real guitar, this would be a better world.

I’ve spent 20+ years mastering the guitar and I still have a long, long way to go.

Being good at Guitar Hero doesn’t make you a real guitar player any more than being good at Madden makes you Peyton Manning.

otcconan on August 9, 2007 at 11:31 AM

Amen otcconan!! I’d rather see a kid be a poor guitar player than be excellent at Guitar Hero. Losers. I guess we have to keep the talentless occupied somehow. Of course, since it’s easier to become a wanna-be guitar player via video game than it is to work hard and learn to play, most kids will never know if they have talent or not. Too bad. Actually being good at something worthwhile is a pretty positive reinforcement for a kid.
