And FBI spokesman Richard Kolko told CNN, “We have not found a clear link to terrorism.”

Not having a clear link, is entirely different than “not terror related”… not to mention that “terrorism” is defined by different people differently. If some Islamists plot to blow up innocent people, but have no ties to anyone “officially” in Al Qaeda, some don’t consider it “terrorism”.

Again, I’m not saying anything even happened here, but I find that comparison of something falling out of the sky to this situation way off base.

The law enforcement source, who insisted on anonymity, said the materials included at least one bomb and a number of bomb-making elements, including chemicals capable of being used in the production of bombs, fuses and igniters — small gunpowder charges used to ignite some explosives.

The Charleston County bomb squad responded, and traffic was halted along the road for 10 hours until the materials were detonated, reporter Venton Blandin of CNN affiliate WCIV said. He described the sound of the detonation as “fairly small.”

Police identified the men as Yousef Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 24, neither of whom is a U.S. citizen. They were being held at the Berkeley County Detention Center in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

But federal officials cast doubt on the South Carolina authorities’ account Sunday night.

Federal law enforcement sources familiar with the case said no bomb was found — but the men arrested did not have ready explanations for materials found in the vehicle. That raised questions, which prompted local officials to contact the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force, the sources said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Berkeley County Sheriff were investigating.

An officer at the detention center said explosives and possible immigration charges will likely be filed Monday. A news conference is scheduled for Monday at 11:30 a.m.

Well…The first story I read on it stated only that there was something suspicious in the trunk. Then suddenly the blow it up and it is reported there was no immediate threat. I sometimes wonder if law enforcement just loves to run around blowing up things. I did just get time to read the update and it seems that they did have some explosives. But, it’s not terror related. Again, seems like the media and some of our government officials like to blow things out of proportion. We’ll see about this case though.

It’s probably nothing. Something similar happened near Denver awhile back. Some guy was jogging and an object about the size of a brick fell from the sky. The guy called the cops. When they showed up they called the number on the object. Turned out to most likely be a data collector from a weather balloon belonging to the national weather service. They blew it up anyway! Can we be anymore afraid these days?

As I explained earlier, a “wait and see” approach is the way to handle this, because we don’t have any details yet… But how can you seriously compare something the size of a brick dropping out of the sky, to two middle easterners being pulled over with explosive devices in their car? “Can we be anymore afraid these days?” you ask? Uh, I’m not sure what “being afraid” has to do with a bomb squad blowing up what they identify as an explosive device, found in a vehicle with middle easterners (while we’re in a war against Islamists!)? What action should have been taken?

I had a friend, Khaldoun, from Jordan in grad school who had some sort of international driver’s license that wasn’t valid in the US but he didn’t bother to get a local license. He was a bad driver who sped and parked illegally. He threw the parking tickets away, figuring he’d be back in Jordan before they caught up with him. When the cops stopped him, he showed them his international license and pretend he couldn’t understand English. Often, the cops just didn’t want to deal with it and sent him on his way. That’s the way the game is played in the Middle East where the cops are all crooks and people don’t have any respect for rule of law which is inflicted on them capriciously.

Now, I can speculate where a couple Arab kids enrolled in college here could be playing that game. Maybe school’s out and they’re driving around America to see the sights. Maybe on Sep 10, the cop would have let them go. After Sep 11, no cop wants to be the guy who let Mohammed Atta go on a traffic stop. So the kid’s stories ring false and the cop searches the car and there’s funny-looking stuff back there. The cops and feds are cocked and locked, eager to bust a terrorist, so they are all over the scene like ants on a sugar cube.

So far, on the facts presented, I give it a 5% chance that it’s anything related to terrorism.

My ex-wife is from Goose Creek. So, yes, there are terrorists there.

I went straight to my Senator on this one and Mr. Graham informed me that a fix in border security that he is working on would solve this problem in the future.

Just as a nuke on Mecca would unite the Muslim world, mass casualties here would unite this country. If Al Qaeda believes that the war in Iraq is settled (either way) we will be hit again and hit hard.
